French Breton musician Yann Tiersen is currently in America touring in support of his latest album ∞ (Infinity), which came out last month on Mute Records.
On paper, it seemed a bit of an odd coupling to pair the French-born Tiersen with Echo Park, Los Angeles up and coming band, NO. But when Tiersen himself asked them to open his tour, they answered the call with a well-crafted 45 min. set of their own brand of cinematic widescreen rock. In promotion of their first full-length, El Prado (Arts & Crafts), the band got the crowd (most of whom were unfamiliar with them) on their side immediately, with opener, ‘Another Life’ and Bradley Carter’s attention-getting baritone vocals.
The band was more reserved in terms of performance than when we saw them last fall at the 7th St. Entry, perhaps in deference to the headlining act, but the songs were no less powerful; the anthemic ‘There’s a Glow’, the driving ‘The Long Haul’ and impactful one-two punch of singles, ‘Leave the Door Wide Open’ and ‘Stay With Me’.
After their tour with Tiersen, the band is looking towards playing Asia, Australia, and Carter’s native New Zealand, as well as a West Coast library tour that involves spoken-word lyric reading as well as music. Per the long line at the merch booth after their set, a lot of people were now saying “yes” to NO.
Although Yann Tiersen’s most popular work is the soundtrack to the Academy Award-nominated film Amélie, we sometime forget that Tiersen was already an established musician prior to the film. It was his recorded albums that director Jean-Pierre Jeunet heard and immediately commissioned Tiersen to compose music for his film.
On this latest ∞ tour, Tiersen produced a sort of soundtrack to a never-ending journey. In addition to the music, Tiersen had his own lamps to produce warmer colors on stage.
The journey started off with ‘Meteorites,’ featuring a full reading vocals by Arab Strap’s Aidan Moffat. Once the full song was played back did the band launched into ‘Slippery Stones,’ and proceeded to play various tracks from ∞.
In similar fashion, particularly the Icelandic track ‘Ar Maen Bihan,’ the band played live music over Amiina’s pre-recorded vocals. While this sounded fine on stage, hearing live vocals would probably sounded much better.
Filling out the rest of the set were tracks from his previous album Dust Lane (‘Palestine,’ ‘Dark Stuff,’ ‘Chapter Nineteen,’ and
‘Till The End’), which tells me that he's still very proud of his recent works.
Surprisingly very few tracks (‘La Dispute’ and ‘Sur Le Fil’) were taken from his famous Amelie album, but to be fair, the songs probably didn’t fit with the atmosphere of this latest ∞ show.
The thing you should note about Yann Tiersen is that he’s a very talented musician. He can play almost any instrument (toy piano, violin, melodica, carillon, keyboard, bells, guitars, etc.), take for instance his ability to seamlessly make the Cedar's house piano sound incredible with ‘La Longue Route.’
Note: Although ‘Le Quartier’ is listed on the setlist as part of a double encore, the band did not re-appear to play the song.
