Black metal band Mayhem is headlining the Skyway Theatre in Minneapolis on April 2nd. The date is part of their The Sanguine Sodomy of North America Spring tour.

Mayhem’s debut album De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas, an album on Rolling Stone’s “The 100 Greatest Metal Albums of All Time”, is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year.

I am told that Watain was on the bill, but the venue’s website or the show’s poster does not list Watain. Instead Midnight (not to be confused with the band The Midnight) to open.

Acclaimed Scottish rock band We Were Promised Jetpacks will be on tour in support of their Enjoy the View (Big Scary Monsters). The tour will stop in at the Turf Club in St Paul on April 3rd, 2022.

We last caught the band in Feb 2020 and said, “After a set change, We Were Promised Jetpacks began their eighty-minute headlining set… with an apology?! “We haven’t been to Kansas City since March 20, 2012, that’s our bad… it was all the bass player’s fault!” singer/guitarist Adam Thompson started, making of light of things, but also promising the best show possible, to make things worth the long wait.”

After eight years away, the fans brought anything but their quiet little voices--

One our favorite Scottish bands, We Were Promised Jetpacks descended on a crowded recordBar in downtown Kansas City, for their first area show since 2012, and fans both longtime and newfound, made sure to give them an enthusiastic welcome back.

The venue (since we forgot to give some background about it when we saw Midge Ure there recently) began in a midtown strip mall fifteen years ago, only to have landlords force them to find a new location at the end of 2015. Re-located within sight of the Sprint Center, its current downtown location holds 399, including a smallish side balcony, with good acoustics (closer to the bar means hearing more chatter), friendly vibe and staff, and resembles a smaller version of Minneapolis’ Fine Line Music Cafe.

Opening the evening was the curiously named Slaughter Beach, Dog, a Jake Ewald side project that sprung from the ashes of Philadelphia’s Modern Baseball, who are currently on an indefinite hiatus. After going it alone for two records, last August’s third full-length album Safe and Also No Fear (Lame-O Records/Big Scary Monsters) goes even farther into acoustic indie-folk and is the most different from his former band’s sound, though Ewald has now formed a band around himself, including MB bassist Ian Farmer and Superheaven drummer Zack Robbins.

Named after a small Delaware town Ewald passed when driving to his parent’s house, his low-key Dylan-esque music features lyrics that revel in the minutia of everyday life and celebrates the small victories of just getting through a common day, often told like a short story and reminiscent of some John K. (Weakerthans) Samson songwriting. “We’re having a good day” Ewald casually professed after the new, ‘Anything’- maybe musically an odd choice as opener for the sonically charged headliners, but SBG nevertheless won the crowd over as the forty-minute set progressed.

Lyrics were especially impactful on ‘Politics of Grooming’, which found Ewald admitting, “You wished that you would turn around and do what you're supposed to, but it's easier to blink and stare and stay”, and went back to 2017’s Birdie album to end the evening with ‘Phoenix’.

Along with Thompson, childhood friends Sean Smith-bass and Darren Lackie- drums find themselves in their mid-thirties with seventeen years as a band together under their belt, and now recharged again with latest album, The More I Sleep The Less I Dream (Big Scary Monsters Records) created after the longest break of their career.

The other news is that the band has begun this new decade minus founding guitarist Michael Palmer, who departed last July, though the great news of fans of this whisper to a scream, wall of fuzz and volume sound, is that Frightened Rabbit guitarist Andy Monaghan has very ably joined on for the current tour.

Kicking things off with 2010’s ‘Human Error’, Thompson, in plain black t-shirt, immediately connected with the audience, stepping to the edge of the stage on both right and left sides to smile as he frantically strummed his guitar, flanked by Monaghan who mostly stayed in his corner and bassist Smith, sporting a Weakened Friends t-shirt to support their European opening band mates.

A dizzying Monaghan riff set ‘Repeating Patterns’ spinning and Thompson’s howling vocal range was on display for an emotionally wretched ‘Someone Else’s Problem’ with heads bobbing and some crowd pogo-ing during ‘Moving Clocks Run Slow’.

The slower ‘Not Wanted’ began with an echoed Monaghan strum but still managed to meticulously build up its sound profile and 2009’s ‘Keeping Warm’ was stretched out to over ten minutes, finding Thompson singing loudly with the mic down at mid-chest, compelling the crowd to clap along, and even getting drummer Lackie briefly on vocals, to the audience’s delight.

“This is a song we wrote when we were kids… I find this song boring… but every time you can play a place like this and see everyone singing along, it makes me feel brilliant!” Thompson admitted before one of the band’s earliest and biggest hits, ‘Quiet Little Voices’ which turned the small club into a Scottish drinking hall for six minutes as everyone chanted and cheered along.

‘Hanging In’ found Thompson vocally imploring, “Don’t Push me, don’t rush me” from the latest record and the encore-less set ended with the album-ender from their 2010 album, ‘Pear Tree’ which had Thompson singing its last verses without the aid of any microphone, completely unnecessary as his voice is still powerful enough to fill the room without additional electricity or aided volume.

“If you’d be my pear, then I’ll be your tree” Thompson sang on their closing number, and after eight years away from Kansas City and wondering if anyone would even bother to show up (the room was filled) We Were Promised Jetpacks (re)discovered that the musical kindred of their intoxicating Scottish sound, does exist and still blooms in the heartland of a country an ocean apart.

Mid-February and the midwest finds itself in the dog days of winter. While Minnesota remains in the deep permafrost, the Kansas City area (still exhaling from the Chiefs Super Bowl win and subsequent massive parade) is in a weather pattern that is anything but predictable-- 72 and sunny on Super Sunday, then single-digit overnight lows soon after, then back to close to 60- wash, rinse, repeat.

There’s still plenty of reasons to go indoors and check out some live music as evidenced by the list of who’s coming to Kansas City / Lawrence, Kansas in the next couple weeks, plus it’s a Leap Year, so there’s one extra day to enjoy the month!

Scottish rockers We Were Promised Jetpacks are currently enjoying a tenth anniversary tour of their debut record These Four Walls (FatCat Records), stopping by the Turf Club on Sunday, July 14.

Opening up the show was Glasgow’s Catholic Action (guitarist/main singer Chris McCrory, drummer Ryan Clark, bassist Jamie Dubber, and lead guitarist Andrew Macpherson). Although the band’s played SXSW in Austin, Texas, in 2018, and some shows in the US (with Veers in Hollywood and with Womps in Austin in 2017)… this was the band’s first full U.S. touring schedule - thanks to their friends WWPJ.

Make no mistake, despite being somewhat new to the country, singer/band leader Chris McCrory did not give off inexperience vibes. The group was very comfortable on stage, concentrating on their two guitarists and bassist, all standing front and center and moving in unison. You can tell they’ve been doing this rock ‘n roll thing for a while now.

They mentioned they’re debuting a live song at the Turf Club, a song that sounded like they called “Crawling Backward”. Near the end of their brief 30-min set, lead guitarist Andrew Macpherson took over singing duties for “I'm No Artist”… which lead up to their set closer “L.U.V.”

As for We Were Promised Jetpacks, the group formed in Edinburgh in2003, featuring singer/guitarist Adam Thompson, original guitarist Michael Palmer, bassist Sean Smith, and drummer Darren Lackie, and won their school’s “Battle of the Bands” competition. The majority of the band moved to Glasgow, and they played local gigs. It was a long road, but eventually Frightened Rabbits asked WWPJ to be their support for their tour of The Midnight Organ Fight… and through recommendation from the esteemed band, WWPJ found themselves signing to FatCat Records in 2008.

We caught WWPJ at SXSW 2009 in March 2009, and heard them playing some songs from their then soon to be released debut album These Four Walls. The record came out June 15, 2009.

We’ve seen the band on and off throughout the years (Feb 2014 and Sep 2018), and have concluded that the Scottish band (like most foreign bands) don’t come over to America all that often.

So, for their 10th Anniversary tour of These Four Walls, the band was happy to come back to the US to play their debut album live complete, from start to finish. Unlike other album anniversary tours we’ve seen, those tour can be overly complicated because of the band’s choice in musical instruments or sound production that makes it impossible to reproduce as a full concert. Thankfully, These Four Walls had very little overdubs and mixes, and sounds the same when played live.

Based on hearing their fans singing back songs and waiting in anticipation of their favorite track, the album seems to have somewhat of a cult following from their devoted fanbase. For fans who already had the CD or digital version of These Four Walls, they were still very happy to re-buy the record as a re-issued a clear vinyl with bonus tracks (live, unrelease, demos, acoustic, etc) from FatCat Records.

WWPJ continues their tour for These Four Walls. If you love the 10 year old album, it’s time to hear the record again completely live on this special tour.

Scottish rock band We Were Promised Jetpacks will be touring in support of the 10th Anniversary of their debut record These Four Walls.

10 years is about right, we first saw the band at SXSW 2009, when they were practically unknown musicians - opening up for Primal Scream and Camera Obscura.

At the time, the average age of the band was 21, and I remember how excited they were to be in America for the first time.

With this upcoming tour, the band promised they’ll be playing most of the debut album live (with only minimal overdubs).

If you never saw them in 2009, this upcoming show is not to be missed.

We live in an age of electric cars, robot dogs, and artificially intelligent computer assistants... but where are the jet packs?!

While the actual jet packs for common folks are still years away, Scotland’s own We Were Promised Jetpacks have returned with a new album and tour, making a recent stop in St. Paul at the Turf Club.

The evening was opened up with a chill electro-pop set by Jenn Champion, a singer-songwriter originally from Arizona who was formally a member of Carissa’s Wierd and went previously under the names of Jenn Ghetto and (the un-Googleable) “S”.

With two other musicians (who rotated playing various instruments), the Champion trio played mostly songs from her new album, Single Rider (Hardly Art Records), a collection of honest lyrics against technically solid beats and rhythms, that easily won over the audience. There is often an underlying sadness to the heavily tattooed Champion’s songs, but tempered against an irresistible beat, most couldn’t help but to swing and dance any blues away.

After over three years away, the Scottish quartet cleverly named We Were Promised Jetpacks has reset themselves with a self-released album out last month called The More I Sleep The Less I Dream (Big Scary Monsters Records) and a re-dedication to shredding faces with their incendiary live shows.

Now in their more mature thirties, the band (Adam Thompson -vocals/guitar; Michael Palmer-guitar; Sean Smith-bass, Darren Lackie- drums) begins their second decade together much like they left their first- with songs that feature somewhat dreary lyrics that reflect their Scottish environment, sung impeccably by the howling Thompson, against a building sonic wall of guitar fuzz, reverb, and echo (seen similarly in fellow bands like The Twilight Sad and Frightened Rabbit).

Taking a well-deserved short break after their last touring cycle, the quartet’s new songs show a return to the basics that first put them on the map, whilst still sounding as urgent and contemporary as their other work. Their eighty-minute set opened with the opening track of the new record, ‘Impossible’ before going straight ahead next into 2011’s ‘Human Error’ then returning to the new and ‘Someone Else’s Problem’, with Thompson vocally pleading “I told you not to listen” (though we all were).

The band is not one to waste time or even talk much between songs (maybe because the Scottish accent makes our American ears strain to understand everything) but more so, to set their sonic mood and play the set as almost one long musical movement. Thompson and band encouraged us to all ‘Keep Warm’ during this chilled autumn night before the menacing title track of the new album was played, a song that starts slowly and droning before building upon itself, as things progress.

“Thank you very much- you guys are very nice!” Thompson said, speaking briefly after over a half-hour into the set, before quickly resuming with a blazing version of 2009’s ‘Ships With Holes Will Sink’. 2011’s ‘Sore Thumb’ was sung partially off-mic, with Thompson’s carrying voice more than enough to fill the room without the need of amplification as guitarist Palmer ferociously stroking up the riffs.

2009’s ‘It’’s Thunder and It’s Lightning’ was as powerfully emotive as ever, with Thompson’s aching voice repeating “your body was black and blue” as drummer Lackie pounded the skins and the volume rose.

The slow burning ‘Hanging In’ and set-ending sharp and swirling jabs of ‘Repeating Patterns’ found 2009’s howling ‘Short Bursts’ between those two new songs, with Thompson singing, “Your silence is bearable... but only in short bursts”. Not believing in the traditional encore walk off/walk back-on process, it was truly to be their last song of the evening, but met with the loudest applause and crowd cheering.

While we may still not be flying around just yet in actual jet packs, the sonic swell of Scotland’s We Were Promised Jetpacks is a welcome return to record bins and live stages and enough to propel one virtually and musically against their formidable g-force.

Scotland's We Were Promised Jetpacks just recently stopped by the Varsity Theater in Minneapolis on Thursday night, in support of their latest Unravelling (Fat Cat Records).

Adam Thompson

The four piece indie rock band (singer/guitarist Adam Thompson, guitarist Michael Palmer, bassist Sean Smith, and drummer Darren Lackie) has a following of diehard fans. The crowd that gathered around me was singing to every single word, knowing every phrase.

We Were Promised Jetpacks have been around since 2003 but didn't release their debut album until 2009. Since then, they have released three albums with Unravelling being the most recent (released October 6th of last year)... but only three songs from the new album was played ("A Part of It", "Safety in Numbers", and "Peaks and Troughs", with the rest of the set making up from their other two albums. Even with three albums and international success, these guys have stayed true to the music and proved that last week.

There were no flashy outfits, no spectacular light show, there was nothing to distract you from the talent of the band and honestly, that was more than enough to keep your mind occupied.

The Scottish band made the music look effortless as they seamlessly switched from song to song. Unless you were really paying attention, it was hard to notice the actually complexity of the arrangement. There was a lot of back and forth between bass and guitar embellishments that, again, if you weren't watching, you would have missed.

Setlist

The crowd was silent as We Were Promised Jet Packs plugged through their set. All eyes were on the band and, other than a few outliers who were bouncing up and down, people just enjoyed the music coming off of the stage.

The sole encore song (not written on their setlist) was an old and classic WWPJ song, "It's Thunder and It's Lightning", taken from their debut These Four Walls (Fat Cat Records).

Seoul

Opening the night was Seoul, a band from Montreal, Canada. This trio just recently released their debut album I Become A Shade back in June of this year and played many selections off of it. Their sound was much more dream pop than the driving rock sound of WWPJ but the bands worked really well together. The Varsity Theater show was Seoul's sixth night on tour with WWPJ and will be joining them for the rest of the North American tour.

Although the music of the night was calm and soothing, there was still more than enough energy radiating from the stage. Between both Seoul, the opener, and WWPJ, the crowd was more than happy to spend the chilly Thursday night in Dinky Town.

The Scots are taking over The Varsity Theater on Thursday, November 12th. We Were Promised Jetpacks, from Edinburgh Scotland, have a sound and live show that you will definitely not want to miss.

This indie rock band started back in 2003 at a high school battle of the bands and has not stopped since. Their newest release Unravelling was released in October of last year on Fat Cat Records. The album was recorded at Chem19 Studios with Paul Savage who has worked with bands such as Franz Ferdinand and Mogwai. They have gotten high praise from Rolling Stone and Spin for a reason.

You may recall that they previewed five or those Unravelling songs (as well as a brand new band member Stuart McGachan) on their live show at the Triple Rock Social Club in February 2014.

The Montreal-based (read: not from Korea) Seoul to open. The trio (Julian Flavin, Dexter Garcia and Nigel Ward) is on tour in support of I Become A Shade (Grand Jury). The album is separated into three distinct suites, equal parts gauzy dream-pop, reverberant R&B, and speculative ambient.

Fans of 90s Arizona rockers The Refreshments will be elated to know that Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers will be making a stop to the Turf Club on November 14th. Clyne, of course, was the lead singer of the Refreshments and when the group called it a day in 1998, he formed the Peacemakers with Refreshments drummer Paul “P.H.” Naffah. The current line-up also features guitarist Jim Dalton (of The Railbenders) and bassist Nick Scropos (of Gloritone.)

The Peacemakers have been steadily releasing records since 1999’s Honky Tonk Union as well as hosting a semi-annual concert in Rocky Point, Mexico called “Circus Mexicus” (an event that’s a veritable who’s-who of Southwestern rock and roll with past guests including like Cracker’s David Lowery and Johnny Hickman to the Supersuckers’ Eddie Spaghetti.) Last year the band released their seventh studio album The Independent, a title that nods to the quartet’s commitment to their DIY philosophy (it was produced by Naffah, recorded at his studio and released on the band’s own label, Emma Java Records.) It’s a record teeming with rollicking country-rock jams that will sound like sunshine to our chilled, Daylight-Savings-weakened ears and spirits.

Next year, The Refreshments’ breakthrough 1996 album Fizzy Fuzzy Big & Buzzy turns 20 years old, so perhaps Clyne and his Peacemakers will throw in some cuts from that album (“Down Together,” please!)

Nashville's Birdcloud to open. The cowgirl duo (Jasmin Kaset and Makenzie Green) is described by the Chicago Times as "shaking up the country cutie aesthetic and, more importantly, elevating women's roles in the highly patriarchal cowboy community."

One of the greatest named bands in Scottish rock is back on the road again.

Edinburgh’s We Were Promised Jetpacks is currently bringing their headlong, sonic wall of alt-rock back to the States, in promotion of their latest release, a live album entitled E Rey-Live in Philadelphia (FatCat Records), as well as is debuting new, untitled songs from their upcoming studio album.

Honeyblood

Opening the show was another Scottish act, Glasgow's Honeyblood, consisting of guitarist/singer Stina Tweeddale and drummer Shona McVicar. The pair rarely spoke between songs, unless it was to thank the audience for showing up early and of course, to state the obvious, "It's really cold here."

With guitar/drum duos, you may think of the White Stripes, but Honeyblood's indie/garage sound is more along the lines of Throwing Muses, Breeders, and PJ Harvey.

As seen on their setlist, the two-piece played almost all of the potential songs from their upcoming debut self-titled album (due this Spring from Fatcat Records). First single, ‘Bud’ (and its B-Side ‘Kissing on You’) and dark preview song "Choker" were standout tracks of their set.

We Were Promised Jetpacks (Adam Thompson -vocals/guitar; Michael Palmer-guitar; Sean Smith-bass, Stuart McGachan- keys/guitar; Darren Lackie- drums) then followed with a crushing, passionate 75 min. set of guitar-driven alt-rock. Beginning bravely with a new song from a studio album not due out until Sept/Oct, the bassline chugged like a tank as Thompson spit fire into the mic, with the sound nicely embellished by brand-new member McGachan on keys, on only his 5th outing.

“We’re gonna try really hard to make sure this is our best show…ever!” Thompson promised before the band charged into ‘Human Error’, his projecting voice impressive, especially since he seems to push it to its absolute limit, with every live performance.

‘Quiet Little Voices’ shook with its chorus, “Quiet little voices, monsters, and words of wisdom”, anthemic chanting, and wall-building crescendo, a fuzz technique similar to other Scottish acts like Biffy Clyro, Twilight Sad, and Glasvegas.

Another new song followed and it became apparent that the band has developed into a more refined, expansive, and fuller sound than their earlier, but no less impactful, material, with McGachan’s keys no doubt helping this. There is a great live energy to WWPJ (Thompson’s vocal strength is something to behold in person) that is well captured on the live album, but the honest emotion being at their live show, has no substitute.

Jetpacks Setlist

‘Roll Up Your Sleeves’ did just that, as the band jumped head-first through this clap-a-long with little abandon, before the track slowed, with its “stay calm, keep warm” bridge, with Thompson emoting a foot+ away from the mic, yet still sounded loud.

‘Ships with Holes will Sink’ was done more urgently than its studio version, and the new songs, despite a slight sound shift, all fit in seamlessly alongside the tracks from their first two albums.

The band is also more prone to building longer instrumentals in concert, such as in their last untitled song that served as an encore, but it also allowed the members to stretch further and move sonically about, unhindered by the structure of a ‘normal’ 3-4 minute song.

All in all, an impressive performance, showing the lightning that some of which they were able to bottle on the recent live album, from a band that should be seen and heard live, if possible.

And, with the debut of a handful of new songs, We Were Promised Jetpacks ably whet the collective appetite for their new studio album (due this fall), to fully see how they have chosen to move forward.

John and Vu recorded a quick-cast for W♥M Radio... these are just initial thoughts on the band and the show, and, by no means, are organized or scripted.

Yes, we have setlists, we have photos from the We Were Promised Jetpacks and Honeyblood show at the Triple Rock Social Club in Minneapolis, last night, February 28th... but you'll just have to wait for the review to see them.

In the meantime, some news on the opening band, Honeyblood, I wanted to share. The duo had a car breakdown in North Dakota, while driving from Seattle to Minneapolis. They were just extremely happy to have made it to the show on time.
