Did you hear? The Walkmen have reformed, and on their first national tour in over a decade. They’ve sold out many of their dates, so they’re decided to extend their tour to the Fall: “Ok so, we are doing more shows in the fall. We truly can’t get enough. Our spring tour was such a thrill and so much better than we could have ever imagined, so we’re stretching our fall tour out a bit more. This fall we’re doing our first west coast headline shows in 10 years and also some fun ones in the midwest, including a new date in Dallas, Texas. And then back east for new shows in Boston and NJ… Thanks to everyone who’s come out so far and we’re looking forward to seeing more of you in the fall!”

We saw the Walkmen’s singer, Hamilton Leithauser in Jun 2014 and said, “With NYC-indie rock band The Walkmen on “extreme hiatus”, the members have gone to pursue various solo projects, including singer Hamilton Leithauser, who played a somewhat subdued but still impactful 40 min. set, showcasing his solo debut, Black Hours (on Ribbon Music). ”

We saw Sun Room earlier in 24 Mar 2023, and wrote, “Opening the show was California’s Sun Room. The four-piece features Luke Asgian (lead vocals & guitar), Ashton Minnich (guitar), Max Pinamonti (bass), and Gibby Anderson (drums). From what we’ve heard, it’s no-nonsense rock ‘n roll. Our favorite Japanese superhero band Peelander-Z is back in town to celebrate their 25th Anniversary of the band. They’re calling it “P-Party! Z-Party!”.

If you’ve never seen a Peelander-Z show, do yourself a favor and check them out. They are one of the most interesting looking and creative bands you’ll ever see. And when you’re at the show, I can guarantee you that you’ll be singing (and possibly playing pots or drums) with the band.

The last time we saw them in May 2015, the venue, for whatever reasons, cut their instruments off after only 25 minutes, so we never really fully experience Peelander-Z: “What the heck happened to the Peelander-Z's Official Wizard World Minneapolis After Party show at the Pourhouse last night??!!!??? After just 25 minutes, the venue cut off the band's instruments!! Everyone in the audience and the band looked incredibly puzzled by the shutdown. The fans were screaming "One more song! One more song!" and Pink replied, "If only we could, but they won't let us play!"”

France’s Oracle Sisters will be headlining the Turf Club in St Paul at the new date of September 22, 2023 (from May 13, 2023). The group was chosen as top 100 artists of 2019 by the NME.

Oracle Sisters, is painter and musician Lewis Lazar, with his friend Christopher Willatt and Finnish songwriter and drummer Julia Johansen. The trio’s music is a little mix of folk, rock, jazz and blues.

Sydney, Australia’s Vallis Alps (David Ansari and Parissa Tosif) is touring in support of their debut album Cleave.

Talking about the record, Vallis Alps said, “This album was made over continents, through a broken (then repaired) friendship, a pandemic, us growing and morphing as individuals and as a band. We have poured every emotion and conversation into this album - a dream of ours to always make. A thread connecting the songs on the album is the idea of being equally patient with the joy as well as the sorrow in life. Although the original scheduled was delayed about 30 minutes, because of the weather... once the music started, they did an amazing job … Low Low’s Christmas show is taking place at First Avenue on Saturday. All proceeds will benefit Second Harvest Heartland. Low adds, “Despite the commerce involved, we hope you will consider .... Divide and Dissolve Divide and Dissolve, the Melbourne, Australia duo of T//R and S//N (Takiaya Reed –guitar/sax; Sylvie Nehill- drums) who asked for quiet as they began, then Reed went into a verbal diatribe decrying worldwide white ....

One of the best music festival around, Rock the Garden returned after a two year absent due to the pandemic.

The festival is broken up on two stages, the main stage and the Garden Stage… which, this year was curated by Low’s Alan Sparhawk.

It made sense that Sparhawk asked Divide and Dissolve to play RTG this year… having supported Low on their tour earlier this year. The Australia duo of T//R and S//N (Takiaya Reed –guitar/sax; Sylvie Nehill- drums) drove 18 hours to play Minneapolis. As we wrote in 2018, the duo often talk between their songs about abusive police power, worldwide white supremacy, seeking to empower black and indigenous people. They reminded us that the land we are on belongs to the Dakota people and that we should give it back.

Next up as Dâm-Funk (stylized as DāM-FunK), American producer from Pasadena, California. He is mostly by himself with his laptop, playing some funky tunes and live-mixing.

DāM-FunK is currently signed with Stones Throw Records.

After an introduction for “Blow” by Diane Miller from The Current’s Local Show, Duluth’s Low (Alan Sparhawk and Mimi Parker) took the stage… with new bassist Liz Draper. Former bassist, Zak Sally was also spotted in the audience.

Low at First Ave (05/18/2001)

Low has been around for a long time, well before I first saw them in May 2001: “…Low came on stage with a chair. Singer Alan Sparhawk sat down and played some acoustic numbers, which inspired about twenty or so people in front to also sit down in the center. The whole thing had, if you'll excuse the pun, low energy.”

Luckily, they weren’t as slowcore as I remembered, they were actually a little upbeat at this year’s RTG performance.

In fact, their latest album Hey What, which came out last year on Sub Pop, was produced by BJ Burton (who previously did wonders for Bon Iver, Charli XCX and Lizzo). Hey What was nominated for Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical category at the 64th Annual Grammy Awards.

It’s been many years since we last saw or heard from Tune-Yards. We last saw her in Mar 2018 and said, “The stage was set with dramatic lighting framing the back end of the stage and a curved center frame with gauzed curtains that would accentuate the shadows of tUnE-yArDs as the three-piece took to the stage for their seventy-seven minute headlining set beginning with ‘Home’. “I always feel on holy ground” Garbus posted on social media just prior to playing the historic venue.”

Tune-Yards’ latest album Sketchy came out in 2021, via 4AD.

Australian duo Mess Esque (Mick Turner and Helen Franzmann), are on tour in support of their self-titled debut album (via Drag City). The tour will stop by Minneapolis at 7th Street on June 9th.

If the name Mick Turner is familiar, he’s previously from Dirty Three, who we saw in Sep 2012 and said he was stoic: “Flamboyant and energetic [Warren Ellis], along with somber-faced Jim White on drums and stoic Mick Turner on guitar, gave the crowd the sonic feast, songs that stretched and swelled with emotion and with every kick of Ellis’ pointed shoe. Ellis indeed provided humor and dramatics to the show; dressed in what one audience member concluded was an LSD-inspired shirt (Ellis insists the tie-dyed purple and turquoise shirt, buttoned down Tom Jones-style, was the result of throwing up Kool-Aid), the violinist drilled the bow into his instrument, causing stringy bits to rub off and into his considerable salt-and-pepper beard.”

Twenty-one year old artist, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and producer Jordana is touring in support of her new album Face The Wall. She’ll tour with Wallows in May, then with New York’s Harry Teardrop (no relations to local Frankie Teardrop), and eventually with Remi Wolf.

Face The Wall will be out on May 20th via Grand Jury. The title, as Jordana explains it, “The album title has a few meanings to me. Mostly, it's about not giving up. The wall can be anything in your way. The album is a sort of reminder to myself that I have to face those things, and I can't take the easy route and turn around.”

New Minneapolis psychedelic rock outfit White Line Darko (Kenneth Zierman, Nolan Juusola, Nolan Leahy, Ben Ouellete, and Matthew Nickolay) will be holding their double single release show for “Turning Out!” this June 10 at the Driftwood Char Bar in Minneapolis.

The third release was engineered and produced by Matt Patrick, who owns and operates Library Studios.

Zippo Man listed to open.

White Line Darko - a Minneapolis-based psychedelic rock band - will be releasing their upcoming double single, "Turning Out!," on June 10, 2022. The project contains two new singles, "Penthouse" and "The Times," and will be performed alongside a slew of other tunes at Driftwood Char Bar.

Saturday, June 11, is the big Rock the Garden show. We’ve previously written about the 2022 line, see details below… but here’s something new: we’ve previously seen Australian duo Divide and Dissolve in Feb 2018, as opener for local favorite Polica:

Outside of an angry punk band or two, no band in recent memory has started so polarizing before ever playing a note, than Divide and Dissolve, the Melbourne, Australia duo of T//R and S//N (Takiaya Reed –guitar/sax; Sylvie Nehill- drums) who asked for quiet as they began, then Reed went into a verbal diatribe decrying worldwide white supremacy, seeking to empower black and indigenous people, and reminding the mostly white audience, that this was not their land.

Similar statements were given before each song played, with the expected crowd response ranging from a smattering of applause to cat calls and insults- but inciting seems to be part of their purpose, so in that regard, it worked. Musically, they play a heavy, low tempo, skeletal doom rock blend meant to incite as much as their statements, with latest self-release being last week’s Abomination.

As with previous events, there are two stages, food trucks, beer tents, and great music.

This year, they are bringing co-headliners Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats and Sleater-Kinney… both excellent bands.

I don’t want to brag, but we were first to report Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats at the band’s first appearance at Bluebird Theater in Denver (Apr 2013): “Nathaniel Rateliff, debuted his new musical endeavor last Thursday at the Bluebird Theater accompanied by soul outfit, The Night Sweats.” The band went on to sign to Stax Records for their self-titled debut album in 2015.

Incidentally, if you ever see a Nathaniel Rateliff’s solo show (which we did in in April 2014), his music and performance is very different than a Night Sweats show. And trivia, but Rateliff previously appeared at Rock the Garden in 2016.

As for Sleater-Kinney, I’ve been seeing the band live since 2000 … with the last one in Feb 2015 after they re-united for a tour. That show was somewhat bitter-sweat, as it would be the last time we would see them with original drummer Janet Weiss (who we just saw in Quasi in Apr 2022).

Gates open at 1pm, music starts at 2:30pm.

Brazil’s Kassin+2 is an interesting project. +2 previously attached themselves to Moreno Veloso (son of the great Caetano) and Domenico Lancellotti… and with Alexandre Kassin (under the billing Kassin+2) was their final project. Basically, what we got on the night of December 11, 2008, was a supergroup of Moreno, Domenico, and Kassin, in one very unique show. Possibly that this tour was not attempted since 2008, so it was a real honor to witness these three played live in this Walker Art Center show.

Kassin+2 is the latest (and final) project from the +2 group. Consisting of three primary song writers, Moreno Veloso, Domenico Lancellotti, and Alexandre Kassin. Moreno and Domenico have already released their records (respectively as Moreno+2 and Domenico+2), and each album- based on what I've heard live, since I don't actually have their records for review - should be very different based on each of the writer's influences.

The Walker Arts Center, in association with the non-profit Cedar Cultural Center (I believe I heard this was their second effort in the partnership) have put together this poshy event (I mean, what concerts have you been to lately that actually comes with a program leaflet?). The program guide has biographies for both the opening band, Quilombolas and Kassin+2.

Quilombolas' sound is mostly Spanish songs. Their two percussions (a hand and drum kit), gives it an afro funk sound, which suited Kassin's sound perfectly. From what I've heard, they only have one or two songs in English, one of which was something like "Driving to Mexico".

Kassin and company came on stage about nine and their set consists of Kassin material for about six songs before rotating to Demenico's set, then Moreno. They circled around with Kassin+2, with his bookend song.

When they're not speaking in broken English, they are talking to us in Portugese like all their songs.

Setlist

As you can see from the set list, it's quite a few songs, but I will tell you that they dropped a few songs off their list (for instance there was only two songs played after "Ya Ya Ya" which started the encore).

To me, at least, these three musicians are like night and day. Kassin's style seems to be a combination of loungey samba music. Kassin then took the bass (these guys are all multi-instrumentalists), and Domenico took over.

Of the three, Domenico's set is possibly the best of the three because he's most about dancey-sound and noises and beeps coming from his machine (not organic). Moreno's set is really traditional folky-sound.

Although each songwriter sounds different, they sort of compliment each other to a unique blend of Brazilian music.

Kassin +2's Futurismo is out now on Talking Head David Byrne's record label, Luaka Bop. I honestly don't know the future of the +2 project, since this is the final chapter in the trilogy, I suggest you see them live before they break up or something. It's only too bad that they're wrapping up their tour with only two more dates in the US. Good luck on catching them.

Once again, Rock the Garden (organized by the Walker Art Center, 89.3 The Current, and Minnesota Public Radio) proved to be one of the best music festivals in the Twin Cities. Held at the Walker Art Sculpture Garden, the 21 year old festival have brought some of the biggest and best and most diverse musical acts to the area.

This year they surprised us with a couple of new amenities, including the American Sign Language interpreters in the front of the stage to make lyrics accessible to those that needed it, and free Wi-Fi access and power-charging stations from Atomic Data. I hope these services will be offered again in future Rock the Garden shows, because we heavily relied on the Wi-Fi and charging stations! It’s these little things that makes RTG so enjoyable.

We’ll break the recap between the two stages:

GARDEN STAGE

Chicago Tribune called The Beths, one of the “best up-and-coming bands”, so we were really eager to catch this young New Zealand trio (Elizabeth Stokes, Jonathan Pearce and Benjamin Sinclair) on tour. This is also partly because they are one of those few bands that we haven’t covered and was excited to see their first time in the area.

According to guitarist/vocalist Jonathan Pearce, the band have been on a co-headlining tour with Bad Bad Hats since February 2019, so they were pretty happy to share the stage once again with the local band.

The band basically played their debut Future Me Hates Me, available now from Carpark Records.

Nashville’s Adia Victoria was next on the Garden Stage. We caught Victoria when she was touring for her debut record in June 2016 and noted, “Adia Victoria must love to play live, you can just tell by her exaggerated movements and singing songs from Beyond The Bloodhounds. Victoria seemed really happy to play the 7th Street Entry (which is the smaller room for the historic First Avenue), as she is a big Prince fan.”

What a difference a few years make, as her new record Silences (Canvasback Records) is strongly supported by The Current (according to the introduction by Mark Wheat) and Victoria was recently won the 2019 Songwriters Hall of Fame Holly Prize.

Victoria thanked Aaron Dessner (from The National) by name and mentioned that he produced her Silences album.

Minneapolis’ Bad Bad Hats (Kerry Alexander, Chris Hoge, Connor Davison) closed out the Garden Stage. This was the group’s first time playing at Rock the Garden, and they were both excited and seemingly nervous…. Especially, when Alexander was trying to explain/dedicate their new song “Wide Right” to the sports team Buffalo Bills.

The last time we saw BBH, in September 2015, we suggested: “There was a strong turnout and buzz for local favorites Bad Bad Hats, who recently appeared on Stereogum and local station The Current.”

Bad Bad Hat’s latest release is Wide Right EP, available now on Afternoon Records.

MAIN STAGE

Rhymesayers’ Dem Atlas, stylized as deM atlaS, officially started the Rock the Garden 2019 show. He’s joined on stage by drummer L.A. and DJ Keezy.

The singer launched into many of his hits, including “Tomorrow Party”, “Never Belonged”, and set closer “Gratitude”… but we have to say the highlight of his set was bringing on Lady Midnight to help him sing “Music Man”. Lady Midnight would outro the song to Lauryn Hill’s “Doo-Wop (That Thing)”. Dem Atlas then declared Lady Midnight as “the best artist in the Twin Cities!”

Dem Atlas’ latest album Bad Actress is out now on Rhymesayers Records.

Personally speaking, Minneapolis/Austin’s Heart Bones was really our favorite of all the RTG 2019 bands. This band is fun and silly, and it’s what we love about this new project from Har Mar Superstar and Sabrina Ellis.

A little history about the group, the two met on tour in 2016 and would often invade each other’s shows. For example, at Sweet Spirit’s show in April 2017, Har Mar showed up to sing a cover of Pulp’s “Common People”. Watching them on stage, you can tell the two shared this wonderful chemistry.

Heart Bones formed around November 2018 as a cover-lover group, performing the Dirty Dancing soundtrack… but based on what we’ve heard at RTG, it seems like the pop/synth group wants to play more original songs.

They have recorded a debut album (or perhaps putting on the finishing touches), so all the songs we heard were new to us. However, when Ellis noticed someone singing along to their songs, Har Mar jokingly concluded that, “the album’s been leaked!”

We have a guessing title setlist, but the song titles would like be different or changed when their debut comes out. The only song for certain we can tell you they played is a cover of Eric Carmen’s “Hungry Eyes”.

Heart Bones is heading out on tour starting July 3rd with Good F*** (they should change their name to Good Food, since we can’t print their name without censoring).

If you asked me, all the older fans were very eager to have Los Angeles’ X back in town. As we previously mentioned, the band’s name is impossible to search for in the Google-age. Still, the first wave punk band, featuring original members of vocalist Exene Cervenka, vocalist/bassist John Doe, guitarist Billy Zoom and drummer D. J. Bonebrake, proudly played through their decade plus of music.

Like many bands, they did take a long hiatus, but reformed in the early 2000’s. We caught the group in Aug 2015, July 2017 (Exene and John Doe only), and Sep 2017 and mentioned, “In typical X-fashion, the band’s set changes from night to night, so if there were truly hardcore fans following them night after night, it was a treat to see what songs made it on their set. A couple of covers were played, Jerry Lee Lewis’ ‘Breathless’ and The Doors’ ‘Soul Kitchen’. ‘Soul Kitchen’ was a special song that appeared on their debut album Los Angeles, and it closed out their set.”

Returning to the Rock the Garden stage for the second time was Courtney Barnett, looking good and ready to rock. As previously written, we’ve been covering Barnett before she came to the USA, praising her debut two Eps in 2013. We saw her in Chicago in February 2014 (sold out), Varsity Theater in June 2014 (Sold Out), Rock the Garden in June 2015, Desert Daze in October 2017, Courtney Barnett & Kurt Vile in October 2017 (Sold Out), and Surly Brewing Festival in July 2018.

So yes, we love her and her wonderful little stories made into songs. In contrast to X’s older audience, Barnett’s fanbase are a little younger and they had an absolute blast singing along to most (if not all) of Barnett’s songs.

With an hour set, Barnett decided to “chuck in an extra song” on her set. She gave us the option between “History Eraser” or “Nobody Really Cares If You Don't Go to the Party”. She opted to play the latter song.

I’m not sure how the ASL interpreters did, as they were provided with lyric sheets … and “Nobody Really Cares…” was probably not provided to them.

Walker Art Center’s Senior Curator, Philip Bither, mentioned how they’ve always wanted The National to close out Rock the Garden, so it’s a dream come true to have the beloved Cincinnati band finally appear to make it possible.

Though their audience has swelled locally, the last time the group actually played in the metro was six years ago, in August 2013, though they had also appeared several times at the co-curated Eaux Claires Festival in nearby Wisconsin.

The band features singer/band leader Matt Berninger, guitarist/keys Aaron Dessner, guitarist/keys Bryce Dessner, bassist Scott Devendorf and drummer Bryan Devendorf and their latest, I Am Easy to Find (4AD Records), is a little different than their previous albums, as it features numerous guest female vocalists, including Lisa Hannigan, Sharon Van Etten, Mina Tindle, Gail Ann Dorsey, Kate Stables, etc.

Berninger addressed the vocals, saying it was necessary, “Yes, there are a lot of women singing on this, but it wasn't because, ‘Oh, let's have more women's voices… It was more, ‘Let's have more of a fabric of people’s identities.’ It would have been better to have had other male singers, but my ego wouldn't let that happen.”

For their seventy-seven minute headlining performance, the band added brass in the form of longtime trombonist Ben Lanz and trumpeter Kyle Resnick, and vocalists Zoe Randell (from Aussie band Luluc) and Mina Tindle (Bryce Dessner’s wife) , dedicating their entire set to middle-distance runner Gabe Grunewald, who recently passed away from a rare form of cancer, “I only met her once, but she changed me forever”, Berninger said.

Opening the lead two tracks from the new album, the band is justifiably proud of the new work with vocalist Berninger commenting before the new ‘Hey Rosey’, “it’s about me- my wife wrote it… it’s pretty scathing”, he half-joked. The straight-ahead rock of 2013’s ‘Don’t Swallow the Cap’ got an early rise out of the crowd and 2010’s ‘Bloodbuzz Ohio’ is about as political as the band will go, “I still owe money, to the money to the money I owe, the floors are falling out from everybody I know” about the gap between rich and poor and trying to eek a simple living in middle America.

The childlike questions of female vocalists Randell and Tindle, counterbalanced by Berninger’s phrases of self-doubt made for even more lyrical tension live on the new ‘Where is Her Head’ and the one-two musical punch of ‘The System Only Dreams in Total Darkness’ and ‘Graceless’ was an impactful mid-set highlight with Berninger repeating on the latter, “there’s a science in walking through windows”. There’s a science in walking through a crowd trailing a wired microphone as well, as Berninger jumped into the audience a few different times as the long cord whipped behind him, making him not so easy to find.

‘Rylan’ from the new record, has been a track that band has played live for almost the last decade, and seemed appropriate after a bright and humid day with Berninger imploring ‘You should try and get some sun” which all 11,000 in the crowd already did plenty of, with the song paused near the end after Berninger noticed someone overcome in the crowd by the continuing heat.

Berninger made his way through the crowd to the back soundboard during a crushing ‘Mr November’ then sensing time was short, yelled an audible to his bandmates on stage to end things with ‘Terrible Love’ from 2010’s High Violet, making his way slowly back through the crowd back to the stage.

“It takes an ocean not to break” the crowd sang in unison with Berninger as The National capped a warm and humid but musically satisfying day at the Walker Art Center – consider the garden properly rocked again for another year.

Thurston Moore: Moore at 60 Read More Thurston Moore Former Sonic Youth songwriter Thurston Moore, and his band billed as The Thurston Moore Group, headlined the sold-out Turf Club show in St Paul last Wednesday...

There is a special two-night celebration called Thurston Moore: Moore at 60 at the McGuire Theater on November 9 and 10, as presented by the Walker Art Center.

Thurston Moore, the co-founder of cult rock band Sonic Youth, will be playing some noise, art rock, free jazz, drone, with the help of Nels Cline, Anne Waldman, Daniel Carter, Ambrose Bye, Devin Waldman, Brian Gibson, crys cole, Steve Shelley, and James Sedwards.

For those attending on Friday (Nov 9), Dameun Strange and Danez Smith will open. For Saturday (Nov 10), Sun Yung Shin will perform. Tickets for the show will be $30 ($24 for Walker Members).

Also worth mentioning is that Glass Modern Records has released Thurston Moore's Klangfarbenmelodie.. And The Colorist Strikes Primitiv on white vinyl release on November 2nd. The album was originally released in 1995 on CD only in New Zealand, and for the first time the music will be put on 180-gram heavyweight vinyl.

Skyline Mini Golf at the Walker Art Center

Read More Walker Art Center This year’s event was sold out to Walker Art Center and Minnesota Public Radio members, before tickets were made available to the general public. Between the two stages at Rock the Garden …

Originally, at least according to the press release, the Walker Artist-Designed Mini Golf was supposed to end on September 2nd. However, the Art Center extended the Mini Golf to September 30th. We took advantage of this extension, and had a pretty good time playing the 10-hole course on Friday.

Currently, the Walker moved the mini golf to the Walker terraces (they re-named it as Skyline Mini Golf), so you’ll have to take the elevator (or the stairs) to level seven. Most of the unique course aren’t challenging (they aren’t meant to be), except hole #3, which had a huge uphill start. Most people hit the ball off the course (since there aren’t any nets to catch the ball).

There were several different color golf balls, to help large group of players keep track of their balls. Putts were also color-coordinated for various sizes.

We saw large groups of college friends and families with a couple of kids, and they were all having a blast.

Depending on skill levels, the whole thing won’t take more than an hour to complete. The free parking by the Loring Park area allows for two hours. If you are worry about getting a parking ticket, the Walker does have a parking ramp for $5 for the day. Overall, it was pretty fun.

When they bring Mini Golf back in 2019, we’ll be sure to bring more friends from out of town (since we always take them to the Walker Art Center’s Sculpture Garden as a main attraction).

You still have a little time left, but the Walker Artist-Designed Mini Golf will end on September 30th, 2018. Tickets are $10 for an adult ($8 Walker members, U.S. Bank cardmembers, and ages 7–18). Kids under 6 play for free.

The annual Rock the Garden (presented by The Walker Art Center and local public radio station 89.3 The Current) returned to the Walker Art Center last Saturday, July 22, 2017, after a temporary relocation to Boom Island in 2016.

This year’s event was sold out to Walker Art Center and Minnesota Public Radio members, before tickets were made available to the general public.

Between the two stages at Rock the Garden, the majority of guests parked at the main stage. The smaller stage, dubbed the “Garden Stage”, was located near the Cherry & Spoon, and was meant for the local bands.

Dwynell Roland

There was already a big crowd gathered around the Garden Stage, thanks to DJ Travis Gorman, playing songs to the crowd. Gorman recently won City Pages’ “Best Hip-Hop Producer” in 2017.

Dwynell Roland, looking really pleased at the crowd, freestyle some raps from his fourth record Popular Nobody. Although the record got some major buzz from The Current, the rapper is ever humble on his Rock the Garden appearance, stating, “You’re probably asking yourself, who is this kid?”

Roland also proudly displayed his custom T-Shirt with a Brian Oake tweet that read “Listening to @DwynellRoland on @TheCurrent. Damn. There's no denying talent.”

The highlight of his show was when he invited local favorite Rhymesayers, Doomtree’s P.O.S on stage to help sing ‘Been Here’ and Devon Reason with Finding Novyon to sing ‘Ride The Wave’.

Bruise Violet

From rap to punk, Bruise Violet dressed up for the occasional, complete with snakes on their microphone stands. This was a special show for the trio (guitarist Emily, drummer Danielle, and bassist Bella), as it was Danielle’s 21st birthday. She happily wore a sash that read “Birthday Bi****: 21 and hot, buy her a shot”.

Starting with ‘Talk S*** Get Hit’, followed by ‘I Cried for 45 Minutes Because of Passive Aggressive Guinea Pigs’, you can just tell that the young band was inspired by riot grrrl bands like Bikini Kill and Babes in Toyland (which is actually where they got their band name from).

Danielle mentioned that their ‘A**** Song’ was written when she was 17, before playing something a little more recent, like ‘Teacher’ from their new EP Trophy Wife (2017) and ‘Wasted’ from Survival of the Prettiest (2015).

Dead Man Winter

From hip hop to punk, and now bluegrass, Americana band Dead Man Winter. As mentioned time and time again, bluegrass is massive in Minnesota, and this band drew in the largest crowd... possibly thanks to the fact that the majority of the band members (inger/guitarist Dave Simonett, bassist Tim Saxhaug, and fiddler Ryan Young) are from the super popular Trampled by Turtles band.

We’ve already previously mentioned that the band headlined First Avenue in February 2017 to promote their record Furnace. Listening to the band on stage, the folky band’s songs deals with very personal topics, such as divorce / breakup and how life is a struggle and unexpected acts of god (‘This House Is On Fire’, which was play early in their set).

Main Stage             

Margaret Glaspy

New York, by the way of California, Margaret Glaspy, with new bassist Daniel and drummer Tim Kuhl, started Rock the Garden 2017 off to a proper start.

The majority of her set is taken from her solo debut album Emotions and Math (ATO Records), but you can tell that the former The Fundies singer was hard at work writing new songs. She played two of them near the end of her set, the latter of the two had some of the best lyrics, “I’m not your father, I’m not your mother. I’m not your sister trying to waste your time. I’m not the tax man.”

We liked what we heard and looking forward to hearing more from Glaspy’s forthcoming sophomore album.

Car Seat Headrest

Seattle, Washington’s Car Seat Headrest was a big favorite from the younger audience of Rock the Garden. The quartet (singer/guitarist Will Toledo, guitarist Ethan Ives, drummer Andrew Katz, and bassist Seth Dalby), jokingly said that, “Our drummer quit before the show... so we’re going to try something different.”

We’re not exactly sure what they meant by their drummer quitting, as far as we know, it’s still the same drummer Andrew Katz (who is also in the band Skinny Teeth). Still, it felt like it was a much shorter set, our notes only show six songs on their set.

Despite the lack of songs (even though they have recorded 13 albums), the fans loved them. Every time you look at the crowd, you can see them mouthing and singing along to Will Toledo’s heartfelt, emotional, depressing songs. Their best song ‘Drunk Drivers/Killer Whales’ had everybody in front singing. We now know why the popular band sold out their previous Minneapolis show last year.

Note: Will Toledo changed his shirt from soundcheck to taking the stage in a black turtleneck. It was uncomfortably hot at the show, that Bruise Violet’s Emily had to mentioned it on their Garden Stage appearance. Emily said that she asked Toledo, “Aren’t you hot under that sweater?”... to which he blankly stared at her, then looked down and didn’t respond.

Benjamin Booker

Since the last time we saw Benjamin Booker at Festival Palomino 2015, he’s released his sophomore album Witness (ATO Records).

Apparently, Booker reconnected with an old school friend Kelly, at the show. He tried to embarrass her, and later say that in 9th grade, she had a cool Modest Mouse T-Shirt, right before playing ‘Witness’.

Booker’s unique raspy vocals, combined with raw, soul-rock, was fun to hear and dance to, even though there is an underlying reference to police brutality in the new album title track.

The Revolution

The festival collectively caught its second wind by early evening as the most anticipated performance of The Revolution hit the stage for a celebratory hour-long set.  As Prince’s best known band, there were rumblings of its reformation before the Purple One passed, but that event was the catalyst to regroup and get back on the road once again, some thirty years after the band initially dissolved.

“Ohhh yeah…make some noise!” bassist Brownmark said, to get the party started with ‘Computer Blue’ from the classic Purple Rain soundtrack (WB Records, just re-released in expanded format) as the classic lineup of the group, guitarist Wendy Melvoin, keyboardists Lisa Coleman and Matt Fink (still in surgical scrubs) and drummer Bobby Z took to the stage.

The band plays remarkably tight as ever, the product of both Prince’s intense rehearsals back in the day, and their consistent touring since their first shows back, at First Avenue last September.  “This song is more appropriate than ever” Melvoin remarked before an abbreviated ‘America’, with she and Brown sharing lead vocals, though Justin Vernon would make a surprise appearance to help out with ‘Erotic City’.

Stokely Williams (of Mint Condition) then came to lead the party for  the rest of the set, beginning with the workout of ‘Let’s Work’, with no one in the crowd able to stay still. “These songs belong to you guys now, we’re just the band” Melvoin said, before the closing ‘Purple Rain’ which had everyone clapping and singing along, as well as many looking and pointing to the sky, in remembrance.

Bon Iver

With the sun tucking beyond the horizon, Bon Iver emerged for their headlining seventy-minute set, beginning with all but the last track of new album, 22, A Million (Jagjaguar Records). Justin Vernon was dressed casually in Orioles baseball cap and charity t-shirt and backed by full band including a cheekily named five-piece horn section, and local native Mike Lewis on bass/sax.

The capacity crowd of 11,000 hushed for the quieter parts and cheered at the louder crescendos, with Vernon noting, “we were here a while ago” referring to their initial appearance at the 2008 installment and being the first to be invited back, “…it seems like a long time ago now”.

‘29 #Strafford APTS’ was “a song about an apartment that never really existed…or did it?!” Vernon mused, the former folk artist now morphed into an experimental, electronic-tinged backwoods Radiohead of sorts.

“That song was called ‘Minnesota, WI’” Vernon said after the 2011 song, “a lot of people in the world don’t know where these places are… I kind of like that”. A roar went up for the magnificent ‘Holocene’ then Vernon went back to 2007’s ‘Creature Fear’ and ‘Skinny Love’ armed with an acoustic guitar seated in low light near the front of the stage, to end the main set.  “We’ve only got two minutes” he said, darting back out quickly to grateful fans, managing to squeeze in the encore of 2011’s ‘Beth/Rest’ as the city’s curfew time approached.

Cult-like gothy electro duo Crystal Castles is back in Minneapolis, this time touring in support of their new 2016 album Amnesty (I) (Casablanca Records). The last time they were in town, it was November 2012 at First Avenue. The Toronto-based duo (Ethan Kath and Edith Frances) is known for their energetic, often chaotic live shows.

UPDATE: The Guidance (AKA Stefan Pruett) will be opening the show. He is a friend of the band and was personally invited to come tour with Crystal Castles on this 2016 tour.

The Guidance's music is self-described as "Future Grunge" (electronic synth sounds, driving beats, and dance elements representing the aesthetic and energy of '90s grunge - all sequenced digitally instead of live instrumentation).

As with previous Crystal Castles shows, perhaps The Guidance will also help with the rhythm section for their show...

Speaking of Walker... Join Colin Stetson for his special “Reimagination of Henryk Gorecki’s Iconic Symphony No.3” show at the Walker Art Center, as part of the unique Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra’s Liquid Music series.

Stetson (along with Sarah Neufeld) recently appeared at the Turf Club in August 2016.

Virtuosic composer/saxophonist Colin Stetson reimagines Henryk Górecki's iconic Symphony No. 3 (best known from the 1992 Nonesuch Symphony of Sorrowful Songs recording), a heartbreaking modern masterpiece with an unexpected and expansive sonic palate. Stetson draws on a uniquely constructed all-star ensemble that employs electric guitars, synthesizers, drums, and woodwinds to create transformative extensions to the emotional core of the piece. Stetson's 12-member ensemble features some of the most in-demand musicians in the country: Colin Stetson (alto/bass saxophones, contrabass clarinet), Shahzad Ismaily (synth, guitar), Megan Stetson (mezzo-soprano voice), Matt Bauder (tenor/baritone saxophones, clarinet), Dan Bennett (tenor/baritone saxophones, clarinet), Sarah Neufeld (violin), Rebecca Foon (cello), Gyda Valtysdottir (cello), Ryan Ferreira (guitar), Grey MacMurray (guitar), Justin Walter (electronic valve instrument, keyboards), and Greg Fox (drums). The ensemble performs in the William and Nadine McGuire Theater on Friday, September 30, 8 pm. The performance is copresented by The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra's Liquid Music Series.
