South Carolina’s Valley Maker stopped by the 7th Street Entry on Friday, August 27, to play some songs from his latest album, When the Days Leaves (Frenchkiss Records).

Opening up the show was Chicago-based musician Tenci, on their last appearance with Valley Maker. The band, led by Jess Shoman, features saxophone player, guitarist Curt Oren, drummer Joseph Farago (of Joey Nebulous), Isabel Reidy (of Izzy True), were both sad and grateful for being part of the tour. Sometime when we see bands near the end of their tour, you get the impression that thay’re exhausted… but not with Tenci. The band seemed like they would be forever happy if they just kept traveling town to town talking about “snakes”.

If you’re wondering about why Shoman chosed the Tenci name for her music project, it’s a tribute to her grandmother's name Hortencia, shorted to Tenci as a nick name.

Most of their songs, such as “Joy”, on their set were taken from their album My Heart Is An Open Field, which came out in 2020 on Keeled Scales. To fill out their set, Shoman said she was working in some new, unrecorded songs on their set.

Tenci ended their 45-min set with a song called “Two Cups” (at least that’s what I heard).

Starting with “Instrument”, Valley Maker (aka Austin Crane), expressed his happiness to be back on stage. Crane is joined by backup singer Amy Godwin, who sang and harmonized many of the songs appearing on When the Days Leaves (including “Mockingbird”)… so it would make sense to have her on tour.

Crane stated the obvious, “I’m going to play some new songs and some old songs. That’s why you guys came out, right? I don’t know any other songs.”

Being back at the 7th Street Entry reminded Crane of the last time he was in town, playing the same venue, in Dec 2018. At that time, he was in the process of moving from Seattle to South Carolina, so that show held a lot of memory for Crane.

Valley Maker will continues his tour to Chicago (tonight), to support his new album When the Days Leaves.

The lovely ladies of Deap Vally released their American Cockroach EP last month.

Deap Vally explain that the EP is, “a collection of songs we’ve been working on for a while that run the gamut from deeply personal, to outright satire and everything in between. These are songs for the underdog, the outlaw, the defeated, for days when you feel like no one understands you or you can’t do anything right.”

The EP came out at a time when the duo (Lindsey Troy and Julie Edwards) was forced to leave the touring world, no thanks to the pandemic. We think they’re best experienced at a live show.

The last time we saw them, it was at Desert Daze in Oct 2017: “Female 80’s inspired rock duo Deap Vally, with Lindsey Troy and Julie Edwards, played in the Wright Tent and man can these girls wail. These two ladies met in a crochet class in Silverlake, CA. Their riff-heavy album of ’16 Femejism is as sexy as a Joan Jett album with the rock glitter of the Black Keys mixed with the White Stripes, and the band has played alongside artists like The Vaccines, Muse and Marilyn Manson. Gonna Make My Own Money was the highlight and Lindsey was doing backbends with her guitar towards the crowd. Bad For My Body was also a heavy hit of grunge and distortion from this duo.”

Since 2019, Valley Maker (aka Austin Crane) left Seattle to return to South Carolina. Then with the COVID-19 pandemic, it left Crane with time to write more songs and, as a result, his recent album When the Days Leaves arrived on Frenchkiss Records in January 2021.

Suicide Squeeze Records will be re-issuing Death Valley Girls’ album Glow In The Dark, on August 27, 2021. The album was previously out of print since 2016… so here’s your chance to own the album this August. We caught the band in Oct 2019 and wrote, “They brought along bad-ass stoner rockers Death Valley Girls and that mysterious Mojave-desert-cool that follows that quartet wherever it goes busted through an initially icy reception. Bonnie Bloomgarden and company bring the heavy Black Sabbath-y riffs and chugging Cramps vibe, but also a serious dose of charm. Bloomgarden was delightful and hilarious, telling the audience that we made “the right decision” by spending our Friday night with them and then applauding our decision. I wish everyone was as supportive!”

Punk/rock band The Muffs is back on tour! The 90s band is still led by singer and guitarist Kim Shattuck with bassist Ronnie Barnett and Redd Kross’ Roy McDonald (the brother of Steve McDonald, who we randomly saw in NXNE 2011).

The trio was on hiatus for a long time, but in 2014 they came back with a new studio album Whoop Dee Doo (which we wrote about in May 2014).

Opening up this show will be The Magnolias, Teenage Moods and Travoramo Fa Fa Fa.

New York’s Martin Courtney (of Real Estate) will be in town in support of his critically acclaimed solo album Many Moons (Domino Records). The shows will feature his full band - Jarvis Taveniere of Woods, Matt Kallman of Real Estate, Doug Keith and Aaron Neveu.

Many Moons is available on CD, standard and limited edition LP. The limited edition LP (of 500) contains an alternate cover with an embossed jacket, featuring an artist logo designed by Robert Beatty and coke-bottle clear colored vinyl.

New York’s EZTV (not to be confused with the pirates EZTV or ETTV), to open.

Seattle's Valley Maker (singer-songwriter Austin Crane) is stopping by the Icehouse in Minneapolis, in support of his LP When I Was A Child (Brick Lane Records).

Spin called his record, “subtle, twanging strings and serene background noises convey a sense of a haunting warmness...”

Locals Ancient Mariner and Savannah Smith also on the bill. The two was previously on the same bill for Communion Minneapolis.

As usual with these Icehouse shows, the event starts really late (after business hours). First band is usually on at 10pm.
