THE KILLERS

One of the most influential bands in the past decade has got to be The Killers. We’ve seen hundred of shows and so many of the contemporary bands covered the Killers…. Which is funny because the Killers wears their influences on their sleeves and are known for playing “killer” cover songs themselves. Recently, due to Morrissey’s last-minute cancellation at the KROQ Christmas show, the Killers covered an excellent version of ‘This Charming Man’. But it shouldn’t surprise anyone, as their singer Brandon Flowers is a massive Moz fan.

Anyway, The Killers’ fifth album Wonderful Wonderful (their first in five years) came out September 22nd on Island Records. The album’s lead single, ‘The Man’, has already topped the Triple A radio chart, as well as countless radio charts around the globe.

What is exciting is that this is the Killers’ first real tour since 2013 (we caught Brandon Flowers in September 2015 and he played plenty of Killers’ songs, but it’s not the same thing).

Show up early to check out special guest Australia’s Alex Cameron. Alex Cameron and his six-piece band will be playing music from their album Forced Witness (Secretly Canadian).

The 2018 Destroyer U.S. tour starts tomorrow. Destroyer (aka Dan Bejar) will be performing songs from his 12th album ken, which came out last October 20th on Merge Records.

In regards to the Suede-inspired name, Bejar explains: “Sometime last year, I discovered that the original name for "The Wild Ones" (one of the great English-language ballads of the last 100 years or so) was "Ken." I had an epiphany, I was physically struck by this information. In an attempt to hold on to this feeling, I decided to lift the original title of that song and use it for my own purposes. It's unclear to me what that purpose is, or what the connection is. I was not thinking about Suede when making this record. I was thinking about the last few years of the Thatcher era. Those were the years when music first really came at me like a sickness, I had it bad. Maybe "The Wild Ones" speaks to that feeling, probably why Suede made no sense in America. I think "ken" also means "to know."”

Show up early to check out Brooklyn’s Mega Bog (aka Erin Birgy), touring in support of Happy Together (Nicey Music). We caught the singer last year with Cate Le Bon and noted, “ Birgy was experiencing some discomforting toothache (asking if there was a doctor in the house to pull out one of her tooth...), but if she was in pain, she didn’t show it on stage. Normally (especially on recorded albums), Mega Bog is more ‘saxy’-sounding, but unfortunately they didn’t have a live saxophonist on in the band. Musically, they sounded a little like Kate Bush with organic chimes and flutes.”

Political punk rock veterans Anti-Flag (not to be confused with Black Flag or White Flag) will be headlining the Amsterdam Bar & Hall in St Paul on Thursday.

These all-ages punk rock shows usually starts early and features a ton of bands… they include Stray From The Path, The White Noise, and Sharptooth.

Anti-Flag’s American Fall is out now on Spinefarm Records and their mission on this tour:

After a two-year absent, Passion Pit returns to a new 2018 North American tour. We caught them a few years ago and wrote, “Singer Michael Angelakos’ trademark falsetto voice echo’d through the boomy stadium; he rarely standing still, bouncing end-to-end on a stage bathed in minimal blue lighting most of the evening. The dichotomy of Passion Pit’s songs is their sometimes dark themes presented in an energetic manner, fused with synth riffs and an undeniable urge to dance to them, and that was certainly the case for the most of the student body this night. Opening with ‘Make Light’ and seguing into ‘The Reeling’, that point was immediately proved.”

The California-based duo slenderbodies will open.

Do you remember the first time you saw Arcade Fire perform “Wake Up” live and at the beginning when the crowd all join together to do the “Aaaah-aaaaah” section, how the hair stood up on the back of your neck and you felt like you were part of something bigger than yourself? Maybe you even got a little tear in your eye or a chill down your spine? And you thought, “THIS is why I love music”? Okay, well, maybe that’s just me… but I had that feeling again last Thursday night while watching an 11-member band from Portland, Oregon called Typhoon. Trust me on this one, if you’re jaded with what you’re listening to, they will make you fall in love with music all over again.

First the backstory, if you’re not familiar with it: Typhoon songwriter Kyle Morton spent his adolescence in and out of hospitals as he suffered through a devastating battle with Lyme Disease, contracted when he was 12 years old. He ended up needing an emergency kidney transplant when he was 16. Although he’s no longer at death’s door, the prolonged illness scarred him both physically (in addition to damaging his organs, his growth was stunted), and psychologically. He found that songwriting is the best therapy for processing his trauma – and luckily for us, it turns out he’s a brilliant songwriter. His deeply personal songs about mortality and struggle are somehow incredibly uplifting, and his band have the rare ability to take these fragile little songs and turn them into full-blown, all horns blaring anthems.

During Typhoon’s show at Metro in Chicago, they strode onstage to great applause before hushing the crowd with the opening track off their latest album White Lighter (album of the year, people!), “Artificial Light”. The skill of the band is amply demonstrated on this track, which goes from off-kilter opening verses, through a rocking, shouting horn-laden middle section, before it changes tempo and becomes a gentle love song. Then Kyle stands before us and sings the final lines: “The light goes off / hope it comes back on / I’ll be here in my familiar haunts / with a broken jar / and a stolen song / wait for the light / to come back… “ And the entire band sings the word “on” in unison (more like “oooooooooooooooooon”) and the whole room is lifted. It’s that Arcade Fire feeling! And just the first of many – in fact, in the middle of the next song, “Common Sentiments,” the crowd joins in and we all sing along with the “Aaaaaahhhhhhhh” before the horn flourish.

With 11 members there is plenty going on in every song. Two drummers, two violinists (who also provide the female vocals), two trumpet players. But at all times there’s no doubt that Kyle Morton is the one in charge. He confidently banters with the crowd, smiling even as he sings some of the most tragic songs of recent times. In “The Lake” he recalls contracting his illness and how it led to estrangement from his sister; in “Morton’s Fork” he sings of the fear of death; in “CPR / Claws Part 2” he sings of the weariness of living with illness: “I wanna live but I don’t wanna live.”

But despite the heaviness of the subject matter, the mood is sky high throughout the show. As with Belle and Sebastian and The Decemberists, the girls in the band – violinist/vocalists Shannon Steele and Jen Hufnagel – are much beloved and when they take their vocal turn in “Young Fathers” the crowd whoops and hollers enthusiastically. At the end of “Summer House” – a song in which Morton is singing about trying to hold onto life to see another summer – a man in the crowd shouts, “F*** Yeah!!!” to much laughter and obvious delight from the band.

The emotional apex of the show came eight songs in when Morton insisted we all join him with a sing-along during “Dreams of Cannibalism”. “Unhand me, I am not a criminal,” we all sang, in another Arcade Fire moment. “And If I am I paid the man, just let me go / Soon enough you will be dancing at my funeral”. And we carried that final note and continued to rise and rise until our voices all flew off into the cold Chicago sky and we collapsed in breathless laughter. Laughing, smiling, to a line like that. That’s the Typhoon experience in a nutshell. Seriously, if you haven’t checked them out yet, please do! In a just world, they soon won’t be playing any venues as small as the Metro.

Lady Lamb the Beekeeper

Opening for Typhoon were the new-wave sounding Wild Ones and, to my delight, the also-quite-amazing Lady Lamb the Beekeeper (the musical alias of Aly Spaltro). Looking a bit like the Olsen twins’ hip indie cousin, Spaltro lit up the stage during her too-short eight song opening set. I would provide a setlist but she played quite a few songs I didn’t recognize, including two brand new songs. I was delighted that she also included excellent versions of “Bird Balloons,” “Aubergine,” and “You Are the Apple” off her debut album Ripely Pine. When she was getting ready to end the set due to the time pressures of a curfew at the venue, she was convinced by her bandmates that there was enough time for a lovely solo banjo rendition of “Regarding Ascending the Stairs”.

As I listened to her powerful, emotive voice I thought to myself how it’s ironic that so many people waste their time with talent shows like American Idol when there are real, vibrant talents like Aly’s out here in the world, waiting for the masses to take notice. I can only hope that Lady Lamb the Beekeeper and Typhoon both become household names in the near future.

Typhoon ripped through One Eyed Jacks in the New Orleans French Quarter last Saturday (3/15/14) and unloaded a sonic storm on local eardrums. The eleven piece band from Portland, known for beautiful arrangements and radical shifts in pace and structure, produced a veritable deluge of sound. With the release of their second LP, White Lighter (Roll Call Records), Typhoon has been a band on the rise.

Coming directly from SXSW, where the band played three highly praised shows, Typhoon showed no signs of being road weary. Frontman/Singer/Lead Guitarist/Maestro Kyle Morton stood confident before his orchestra and delivered a Category 5 performance for the ages. Seeing all those musicians on stage, perfectly in harmony, each exactly where he or she should be, was truly a sight and sound to behold. They soared through the gorgeous song 'Artificial Light', Morton achingly spelling out his frustration with the mysteries of the universe. They jammed out 'Dreams of Cannibal', a foot stomping, often group sung ode to relative innocence. They carefully stepped through 'Possible Death', a lyrically short yet deep examination of ambition and the preposterous lack of control we have in a universe filled with billion year old stars. ' On The Lake', Morton went through the story of his contracting Lyme disease as a child and nearing dying in brilliant form, the heavy reverb and bass filling the room and our bodies with an analogy of the pain he must have felt. Each epic song rose and fell like hurricane swells, pounding then quiet, furious then furtive, each audience member entranced, drenched.

I keep trying to describe my new favorite band, Typhoon, to friends.

My first description: “They’re one of those bands who can make 11 members sound like a single guy with an acoustic guitar. You know, like Belle and Sebastian.”

My second try: “They’re like Arcade Fire without the overbearing pretentiousness or French accents.”

I guess maybe trying to describe them by using other bands as points of reference is my first mistake. Typhoon, an 11-member collective from Portland, Oregon, are a life force unto themselves. Kyle Morton’s lyrics contain the intensity that one would expect from someone who spent his teen years at death’s door after contracting Lyme Disease at the age of 12. “Each time I awake, I’m still alive / Outlived my expiration date, imagine my surprise.” To Kyle, even looking up the stars is a bleak affair: “Every star is a possible death... It burned out five hundred million years before I saw it.” The world is filled with dark forces trying to steal his loved ones away: “It turns out that we are shit out of luck / There are things in the woods that will prey on the things that we love.” Every second brings you closer to your demise: “Count down the time that you have left, in a jar, try to catch, try to capture it.”

Ultimately, though, this bleak lyrical content isn’t sad or depressing; it’s actually life-affirming in the most genuine way. For someone to come so close to death and survive, there comes an appreciation of life and of loved ones that is that much more intense than the average person. This upbeat intensity is embellished by the beautiful soundtrack as multiple drums, guitars, keyboards, string and horn instruments, and backing vocals interweave into a majestic whole on their second album, White Lighter.

Having watched several amazing live performances on You Tube, I can’t express how excited I am to see them live. Seriously, one of the best bands in our world. You really should check them out!

Although Kurt Vile is no longer in The War On Drugs, the Philadelphia is proving that they can survive without Vile with a string of sold-out shows. The shoegazey band is currently out on tour in support of their latest release, Lost In The Dream (out March 18th on Secretly Canadian). Who's ready to see an 11 piece band Typhoon from the beautiful state of Oregon? It's almost as if an entire orchestra combined with your basic indie rock band. They have a little bit of a Frightened Rabbit sound to them for those of you who need a larger to band to compare, try Arcade Fire. Lead singer Kyle Morton has a very distinct voice that should have everyone wanting to catch a performance.

Typhoon's fourth release White Lighter is one of 2013's top releases, and is truly a complete album. This orchestra size act adds so many layers into their songs with a great blend of all the instrumentation.

If you're looking for one song to enjoy listen to "Young Fathers".

Last month, Pixies released a brand new music video overnight to accompany the song "Greens and Blues" from the band's EP-2, which came out January 3rd. You can watch the video on youtube.com.

The "Greens and Blues" video was written and directed by Josh Frank, who also wrote the book Fool The World, the Oral History of the Band Called Pixies. Frank explained why he chose that song to work on: "I chose ‘Greens and Blues’ specifically because it touched me and spoke to me, from the moment I first heard it. It had that power and emotion I remember from when I heard Bossanova for the first time in high school, that immediate connection, that very personal moment with a band you love where the song feels like it is speaking just to you. ‘Greens and Blues’ also feels important, iconic, and timeless like all great Pixies songs."
