Nashville pop savant Tristen is returning to the 7th Street Entry this Sunday, May 5th, in support of her latest 7” called Dream Within a Dream - available May 10 via Louisville's This Man Records.

We last saw her open for Robyn Hitchcock and wrote, “Hitchcock reached back several times to older Soft Boys songs as well as those done with The Venus 3, even working in a David Bowie-penned Mott the Hoople cover with opener, Tristen, as part of the three-song encore.”

Opening up the show will be Kenny G superfan Meg Kirsch.

We caught the band in April 2013 and said, “Singer Elias Bender Rønnenfelt looked very emotional - yet with a blank uncaring stare that reminded me of Ian Curtis. Their music wouldn't really fit neatly in a punk genre; they seem to have a little self-loathing to their lyrics and sound.”

Legendary UK singer-songwriter Robyn Hitchcock returns to the road with his latest band, His L.A. Squires for a short tour which includes a two-night stand in St. Paul, at the Turf Club. 

Hitchcock is still in support of his eponymously titled album (on Yep Roc Records) from last year and the fans, both young and old, were glad to see the singing troubadour and band (which includes Supernatural actor Mark Sheppard on drums, who first played with Hitchcock when he was seventeen) play favorites from all of his eras. 

Hitchcock reached back several times to older Soft Boys songs as well as those done with The Venus 3, even working in a David Bowie-penned Mott the Hoople cover with opener, Tristen, as part of the three-song encore. 

Nowhere to be found was ‘Balloon Man’ though, one of Hitchcock’s biggest solo hits, but a tune he’s reportedly not fond of playing. 

Robyn Hitchcock and His L.A. Squires continue in St. Paul tonight with a sold-out second night how before traveling eastward then back to the UK.

It’s been a long time, but Nashville singer-songwriter Langhorne Slim (aka Sean Scolnick) will be back in town at the Cedar Cultural Center on Tuesday, April 24th. The singer has a hit on his hands with Lost At Last Vol. 1 (his sixth full-length album) and featuring the song “Life Is Confusing” (reach over 3.5 million Spotify streams).

Although Langhorne Slim played in 2015, the last time we saw him was in 2008 was happy to report his dedicated fanbase: “He seems to have a very dedicated bunch of college-type fans, who can sing to all his song (and they loudly demonstrated this too).”

Nineteen Thirteen, a duo featuring cellist Janet Schiff and percussionist Victor DeLorenzo (of Violent Femmes), to open.

Seattle’s Fleet Foxes sold out their double booking at the Palace Theatre in St Paul.

At the height of the popularity, we jokingly called them an unknown indie folk band when we reviewed their Helplessness Blues album: “You may have heard of this little indie folk band from Seattle. They crashed the scene in 2008 with the release of their eponymous debut album, and some three years later returned with the Grammy-nominated Helplessness Blues. For a band whose discography contains only two LPs and a handful of EPs, Fleet Foxes quickly became synonymous with ‘[insert agreeable adjective] harmonies.’ In fact, when someone describes a song’s aesthetic as “like Fleet Foxes,” everyone in the room gets it, no further explanation needed. This is also a fairly common tool for music critics who’ve, unfortunately, exhausted their glossary of “folk terms” (i.e. ‘pastoral,’ ‘bucolic,’ ‘organic,’ etc.). It’s easier to write “So-and-so’s latest release contains the silken harmonies of Fleet Foxes” rather than “So-and-so’s latest release contains a million gentle trills from the city songbird that’s happily found his bucolic field of dreams.” Listening to Helplessness Blues, it’s obvious the band is still content with wandering through metaphorical fields (not too many literal fields in Seattle proper). This begs the question: did Fleet Foxes pull a Fleet Foxes? Well, of course.”

After J Tillman left the band in 2012 (and ultimately reinvented himself as Father John Misty), Fleet Foxes took a long break (we actually thought they broke up), and eventually returned with Crack-Up (Nonesuch Records), released earlier this Summer.

We caught Jenny O in October 2016 and said, “Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter Jenny O opened the evening with a demure set of songs from 2013’s Automechanic (Holy Trinity Records) and the upcoming self-produced Work EP, due out this coming Friday. The seated audience was charmed by her natural coyness and by the songwriting of ‘Lazy Jane’, ‘Get Lost’, and the new ‘Cheer Up Free Your Mind’.”

In W♥M article Minneapolis/St. Paul - Gone Country (?!?!) we examined country music is more popular than pop music. Here are some evidence, Garth Brooks sold out his 11+ show residency at the Target Center and the semi-recent Eric Church show was the second highest beverage-per-person sales for that venue. It is unbelievable how popular Country Music is in Minneapolis... so not surprising when you hear that the "Best New Country Badass" Sturgill Simpson sold out his show in Minneapolis.

Sturgill Simpson's latest Metamodern Sounds in Country Music came out earlier this May 2014 on High Top Mountain, Loose Music.

NME described Omar Souleyman as "Syrian-folk techno banger", and you can check out this music fusion this December 5th at the Cedar Cultural Center. Think of it as Middle East meets Western electronic dance music, and you get the idea behind his latest album Wenu Wenu (Ribbon Music).

This is a rare opportunity to see Souleyman at such a small, intimate setting. Looking over some of his gigography, he traditionally does not do club shows, instead focusing on (large) music festivals like Glastonbury, ATP, Way Out West, NXNE, Bonnaroo, Pitchfork, and the upcoming Sydney Festival (which we mentioned in W♥M224).

Minneapolis' Vacation Dad and Brooklyn's DJ Don Cuco are set to open.

Local pop/folk singer Mason Jennings has a two-night residency at First Avenue this December 5 and 6th. The thing about him is that he has a very distinctive voice... and he will definitely be playing some tracks off his 2011 album Minnesota and current 2013 Always Been.

Nashville by-way-of Chicago, Tristen will open both First Avenue shows. We previous caught her live show last year and noted that her show was mostly taken from her then-upcoming album Caves.

It was a Nashville night at the 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis yesterday with The Features and opener Tristen. The two acts is part of this exciting new wave of younger musicians (such as Caitlin Rose and Those Darlins) playing alt-country-rock with a DIY attitude from the "Music City".

Opening up the show was Tristen Gaspadarek, otherwise known simply as Tristen. I believe this was her second appearance in Minneapolis, according to her banter on stage. She's originally from Chicago, but currently "Nashville is where we hang our hats."

Most of her set is from her upcoming CAVES album, which is coming out October 15th. The album is said to be a departure from her previous Charlatans At The Garden Gate. Songs from the new album included "Easy Out ", "Catalyst " , "Gold Star ", " Island Dream", and "No One's Gonna Know ". Rounding out the rest of the show was her latest work, a collaboration song with her guitarist, Buddy, for "Anti-Baby" and her set finale "Bourgeois Bouquet".

The Features came on stage around ten and played a nearly hour long set consisting of songs from their new fourth self-titled album, "The New Romantic ", "Fox on the Run", "With Every Beat ", "Won't Be Long", etc.

The thing to note this Nashville quartet is that they maintained a high level of energy throughout their performance. Most bands can only sustain that level for so long before "taking it down a notch", but The Features were consistently energetic.

For the encore, the band played one of their first song they wrote called "Thursday". The song was actually meant to be included on their debut 1998 album called Spongebath, but it was never released. The oddity eventually found itself as an A-Side off a 10" vinyl. The song was a nice way to end the evening, even if it was only Wednesday.

The Features will continue their mid-west tour through mid October in New York. Although I did not see official CMJ listing, I'm almost certain that the band may end up doing some CMJ showcase (since the event is taking place October 15-19 this year). Yes, we are covering CMJ 2013, so if they turn up, I'll let you know.
