Last night at the Icehouse, in Minneapolis, John Douglas, of the Trashcan Sinatras continued his acoustic tour.

He released an acoustic solo self-titled CD last year, which included new and old songs… and just as the tour was beginning he released a four-track CD EP Still or Sparkling? and reissued the solo CD on vinyl.

Opening for John was New Jersey’s Lily Vakili from Vakili Band; she is a singer-songwriter who sang of love, places and family.

John’s set was a Trashcan Sinatras fan’s dream. He played a sampling of the best songs he brought to the band; “Weightlifting”, “Leave Me Alone”, “Oranges and Apples” (Syd Barrett tribute) and new songs “Maid O' The Loch” and “My Favorite Dress”. Each came with a story about the meaning or creative spark that led to the song’s creation. John also included Prefab Sprout’s “We Let The Stars Go” and Tom Wait’s “Johnsburg, Illinois”.

I’ve been a fan going back to 1990, when a tape trading friend from Scotland sent me a tape that included a radio session which included a cover of The Beatles’ “Tomorrow Never Knows”. In this show, John, I believe, has a new confidence in his voice that really shines.

John is in Chicago tonight at the Gman Tavern.

Beloved Scottish band The Trashcan Sinatras (aka Trash Can Sinatras) will be touring in the US as a 3-piece acoustic band (Frank Reader, Paul Livingston and John Douglas). The group celebrated their 30th anniversary, having formed in Irvine, Scotland in 1987.

There are no opening bands listed, but that shouldn’t be a problem for the TCS, as they have over six albums and hundreds of songs to choose from. We’ve seen the band before, and noted that they tend to change their setlist night, after night.

Beloved Scottish band Trashcan Sinatras just headlined the Amsterdam Bar & Hall in St Paul on Saturday, May 28th, in support of their crowd-funded new record Wild Pendulum.

Sophie Auster

New York’s Sophie Auster opened up the show. Although the singer/songwriter recorded her first album when she was 16 years old, using her father’s (Paul Auster) French poems and Sophie’s original lyrics... she actually may be known for being an actress in several films (such as Grand Street) and television shows (such as Mozart in the Jungle).

Auster’s 30-min set featured mostly songs from her 2015 album Dogs and Men, including ‘AKA’, ‘Bad Manners’, and ‘Little Bird’ (for which she won the grand prize in the 2016 John Lennon Songwriting Contest).

Trashcan Sinatras

Fans of Trashcan Sinatras have been patiently waiting for the band to return to the touring stage since their last Minneapolis appearance in 2011 (and prior to that, at the now-defunct 400 Bar in 2005)... so it is not often that the Scottish band (currently with singer/acoustic Francis Reader, rhythm guitarist John Douglas, guitarist Paul Livingston, keys Stevie Mulhearn, bassist Frank DiVanna, and drummer Stephen Douglas) make their way to the States. I’m told that John Douglas, who was diagnose with autoimmune disease in 2013, has been undergoing treatments and surgeries, so that may complicate matters when it comes to the harsh touring life.

Anyway, when they do make it to our corner of the world, it is always a great celebration and fun get-together with the bands and their fans.

TCS’ current tour is for their album Wild Pendulum, which came out as a result of a successful PledgeMusic campaign. The band started their Wild Pendulum tour in Boston, then NYC Pop Fest, and eventually to St Paul’s Amsterdam Bar and Hall on Saturday night. Originally the band wanted to book the Cedar Cultural Center (where they previously played in 2011), but the nonprofit venue was booked that night.

Of course, the fans are in the 30-40 age range, many of them have seen TCS numerous times. Everyone at the show wanted to be there, all respectful and quiet and ready to enjoy the show. Some even sacrificing going out of town for the long Memorial Day Weekend, just to be there for TCS.

Walking on stage exactly at 9pm, TCS’ singer Francis Reader nervously asked, “You guys ready?” (to the audience), and the audience overwhelmingly responded “YES!” Thus started their 80-min set with ‘Best Days on Earth’.

Setlist

A lot of old favorites, such as ‘How Can I Apply...?’ and ‘Hayfever’ (which Reader promised, “the hits are coming!”) were played throughout their set, while newer songs from Wild Pendulum were hardly heard... including the intro song, ‘Let Me Inside (Or Let Me Out)’, ‘I See The Moon’ and ‘What's Inside the Box?’. The latter song featured opener Sophie Auster to “sing the girl parts”.

For ‘I’ve Seen Everything’, which was another fan favorite (you can tell that they knew when to do the sequence of claps), Reader dedicted the song to “all the teachers in the room”.

Interestingly enough, Reader mentioned that they originally wrote ‘I See The Moon’ for Britain’s Got Talent Susan Boyle, but apparently her people ultimately rejected the song... so TCS decided to keep the song and recorded it on their new Wild Pendulum album.

Australian singer/songwriter and actress Missy Higgins will be playing the Fine Line Music Café on Saturday, May 28th. Higgins took a break from the industry since 2014’s album Oz to devote time to her family, giving birth to her song Samuel Lee in January 2015.

As she has previously mentioned, she loved playing live:

I like being home, having my routines, looking after my garden and playing with my dog, but I also love playing. I love being able to do both ...

It would seem that she’s officially back to music this year. Her latest single, ‘Oh Canada’ came out February 2016 via Eleven/Universal Music Australia.

Before we get started, I'd like to point out that I've been going to the Cedar Cultural Center for shows for a long time, well, at least when it was re-opened for music. It was mainly a World Music venue, and even when you look at the name, there was a sense of class and direction. It's good that the Cedar started booking more indie bands, which I'm started to see more and more play at the venue. Almost every artists I've talked to mentioned how amazing the place is, mostly because they are not used to playing in such a nice (and clean) room. If you think about it, most traditional music venues are basically dive bars converted to have a stage for bands.

In contrast to the Dodos' audience a few nights ago, this was a much older crowd. The Twilight Hours were the support act, a full band, but it seems mostly two main guys, John Munson and Matt Wilson*. When not playing songs about telephones ("Telephones") and, er, more telephones ("Call Me"), the two guys does amateur standup (Matt Wilson plays the straightman). Highlight of the night seems to be during "Sound Waves", Munson, the one "with the 'stache", started doing an interpretive dance and saying how we should feel the waves.

Sure, we got huge cheers for "Weightlifting" and "Hayfever", but I thought the new songs sounded better live.

The highlight of the night was when lead singer Francis Reader brought out the iPad, leading John Douglas to joke about checking his emails. It's interesting, it's the first time I've seen a band utilizing the iPad as a music instrument, usually I see laptops used to play back loops and sounds that can't be produced by traditional instruments - but never playing the actual notes from a device. Speaking of different, there was a point when they asked for a trombone player to come on stage. That seemed really random (they basically sent out an email earlier asking for help).

Not on the setlist were the three songs for the encore, they were "How Can I Apply", "Howling" and "The Therapist".

* Trivia: Matt Wilson is Dan Wilson's brother. If you don't know who Dan Wilson is, he's the singer/songwriter of "Closing Time", a major hit for the band Semisonic, in the late 90s. Wilson also penned, in my opinion, the best song that Carrie Rodriguez ever sang.

This Scottish band's been around for ages, but they sort of disappeared from the US radar post-1996 or so. If you were a hardcore TCS fan, you probably shell out the import tax of getting their Japan or UK release of A Happy Pocket.

The Trash Can Sinatras celebrated their 20^th anniversary last year with the release of their new studio album, In the Music (their first album Cake was released in 1990). Still quite pleased with it, the band is finally back in the US for the whole of March for touring.

From what I've gathered, the band's really brought itself to what all the kids are doing with the twitter and the email and the usb sticks and stuff. They're even taking requests, so get on it already, if you are going to see them. Since I'm a cover lover, I wouldn't mind hearing "I Know It's Over" (their Smiths cover from Smiths is Dead), "Lady is a Tramp" or "To Sir With Love". I'm certain, they are going to do "Hayfever", their US hit.

Also, it looks like this is going to be a pretty intimate acoustic show. Dates below:

We've talked about Hungry Kids of Hungary before (hint: I like their name).

Well it seems the kids have been busy, doing well on Triple J, #24 on the ARIA Charts, and playing at the Big Day Out.

I don't know if the band has ever been to the US, but I have this information below that they are indeed going to be touring North America, even stopping by SXSW on their way to California.

If you listen to our podcast, you know we love the Wombats.

The difficult sophomore album from the Wombats is done. It's called This Modern Glitch and it's being released on April 26^th via Bright Antenna/ILG/Warners records.

With that, they are coming back to the US, but so far, these are the only confirmed dates I've received:

If I get new tour info, I'll be sure to let you know. In the meantime, their new single is called "Anti-D" and you can view the video at youtube.com. The video is pretty weird, nuns and balloons are involved. Their last single, "Tokyo (Vampires and Wolves)" is doing phenomenally well in the UK and Australia.

I don't have the new album, but I did look over their track listing and one of their song is called "Last Night I Dreamt...", which sort of made me wonder if this is a cover of The Smiths' "Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved". It's probably not a cover. No hope, no harm, just another false alarm.
