Laurie Lindeen, the guitarist and singer of the girl trio Zuzu’s Petals and Paul Westerberg’s ex-wife, has died on July 1, 2024. The news was shared by bassist Coleen Elwood and drummer Linda Pitmon.

Zuzu’s Petals debut in 1993 with their debut album When No One's Looking on cassette and CD, via Twin/Tone Records. The band took their name from the film It's A Wonderful Life.

Coleen Elwood writes:

It is with a broken heart, and the permission of her family, I share the horrible news of the death of Laurie Lindeen, due to a brain aneurysm 7/1. My dear friend of 45 years, ZZP petal sister, musical collaborator & funny AF old school pal. I am shocked & devastated & at a loss for words to describe what she meant to me, her family & MPLS music community. She was one of the smartest & funniest…who could convince me to do, just about anything; “sure I’ll take my college degree, move to Minneapolis & start a band with you, before I can play the bass”. There will be more pictures & stories to share…and so many more tears to cry. So for today, hug your pals, kiss your loved ones, listen to X/ zeppelin/ Joni or Roxy music…and turn it up past 11. Tommy Stinson (from The Replacements and Soul Asylum) brought his new project called Cowboys in the Campfire show to the Fine Line Music Café in Minneapolis on Saturday night. This was the first night of the tour.

Opening the show was Tommy Stinson’s daughter, Ruby Stinson, who started her set with “Come Clean”.

Ruby is joined on stage by Mariah, who provided all the backing music, in this stripped-down performance.

In honor of Cowboys in the Campfire’s country sound, Ruby decided to cover two Dixie Chicks (aka The Chicks) songs, starting with “I Can Love You Better” and later in their set, “Tonight the Heartache’s on Me.”

Another cover on their set was Prince’s “Little Red Corvette”... but done in Lizzo’s style, so the song has a slower-paced arrangement.

The New York singer played a lot of unreleased songs, such as “Heaven”, “It’s Over” and “Mine”. The latter is still a pending title, as it’s been recorded and produced for a record, coming out next year.

They ended their set with “That’s How I Like It” (it could be a different title, but that is the main chorus lyrics). The song will be a new single, coming out in about two months from now (they're still working on the music video).

Ruby will be back in New York and will be opening for Har Mar Superstar at the Bowery on July 15.

Next up was Colin Campbell from The Shackletons. We previously saw the band at Basilica Block Party in 2018 and said, “The Shackletons could have been named The Campbells as there are three siblings (Colin-voc/gtr; Cameron-bass; Evan- drums) that compose this stomping blues rock band. Breaking out locally last year with the locally-centric song ‘Minnesota Girls’, their 2nd EP dutifully titled Second Attempt, shows further promise of things to come.”

Campbell was solo, and decided to try out some new songs he’s written. “You guys don't mind if I play some new songs, do you? We can pretend they're Golden Oldies, you guys wouldn't know.”

He ended his set with a few classic Shackletons songs, their debut single “Minnesota Girls” and “Exactly What It Looks Like”.

Cowboys in the Campfire is the latest project from Tommy Stinson and Chip Roberts. As the name suggests, this duo is a little on the Country & Western side of music, somewhat of a departure from Stinson’s previous music styles.

Like all previous Stinson shows I’ve attended, you really never know what you’re going to get, and that’s half the fun. Last night’s show proved no different, as his music partner in Cowboys in the Campfire, Chip Roberts, could not get a flight to Minneapolis on time. Stinson had nothing nice to say about Delta airlines.

The show started off with Stinson solo, but he would be joined by Karla Rose on violin and backup vocals, and Chops LaConte would later join on the upright bass. According to Stinson, Chops is officially the third band member in Cowboys in the Campfire (so expect to see a trio if you see this band live).

If you look at Stinson’s post-The Replacements, he's tried his hands at punk music in Bash & Pop, alternative rock in Perfect, and hard rock in Guns & Roses... Stinson is always trying something new.

“I’m not one to be pigeonholed -- but I'm not putting a lot of thought into it that I DON’T want to be pigeonholed,” Stinson laughs, “For me it’s always been that the songs pretty much tell you what they're going to do. I can sit there and work a song into the ground, forcing my will on it, or you can listen to the song and go, ‘What does this want?’ and do that. I’ve always done it that way. Ultimately, it’s more about, ‘Let’s try and get the best 10 and take what we’ve got and make them the best they can be.’”

Stinson and Roberts were friends for many years, and whenever they got together, they would randomly play some shows. They started co-writing songs together, and accidentally became Cowboys in the Campfire when they had at least 10 good songs.

Half of Wronger’s songs were recorded in 2017, with Christine Smith, producing , X’s John Doe on bass and backup vocals. The rest of the album was recorded in Stinson's studio with Twin/Tone Records co-founder Peter Jesperon and his son Autry helping with the sequencing and overall encouragement.

Unfortunately, due to the lack of Chip Roberts, Stinson had to change the set a little and played a few of his solo works, including “Meant to Be”, “Not a Moment Too Soon”, “Destroy Me”, and “Hey Man.”

He did a Bash & Pop song, “Can't Be Bothered”, and later a Cowboy song, “Schemes”, played near the middle of their set.

Even though it was only one half of Cowboys in the Campfire, you can tell that Stinson is incredibly proud of the record and their songs. The duo (trio for live performances), will continue the rest of the Summer tour... pending Delta Airlines delays, of course.

According to Stinson, he just grabbed a few of his buddies and they're out on tour and writing and recording new music (including his new 7" for "Breathing Room", which they played mid-set). While some fans were expecting Stinson to play some Replacements' classics, Stinson avoided playing any of those songs. That's fine, I don't think fans expected it as much.”

Pittsburgh quartet Feeble Little Horse (stylized as feeble little horse) is touring in support of their album, Girl with Fish, out June 9th via Saddle Creek.

They shared their single “Pocket” and Lydia Slocum explains, “for me ‘Pocket’ was a song about being single and not knowing what to do with myself. I got in the habit of showing someone affection and I liked it but then that ended and I just had all these kisses and hugs burning a hole in my pocket! I felt locked out often and like I was just stuck haunted by my old love and it felt like a dead man that wouldn't leave me alone because the thoughts of it were so intrusive and repetitive.”

Twin City music scene veterans Run Westy Run just had their sold-out album release concert for Beyond Reason (Cardinal Drive Records), on Friday night, at the Turf Club in St Paul.

This is their first studio album since 1990’s Green Cat Island, so it’s a big deal to finally get some new RWR songs. The band has a big local fanbase, a few of them were outside the venue begging attendees if they had extra tickets.

To be perfectly honest, I was rather excited to see The Mood Swings. The band, featuring Ashley Ackerson and Sallie Watson, had not released anything new since 2009’s Recessionista. While the band would play on and off gigs, it seemed like they are fairly inactive since 2009.

During the Mood Swings’ hiatus, Ashley would spend more time in her side project BNLX, with her husband, Ed Ackerson (of Polara) - that’s why you saw BNLX albums (the album with their dog on the cover) at the Mood Swing’s merchandise table.

We caught BNLX’s very first concert at Sauce in Oct 2010, which we described, “Despite being just two persons (Ed and Ashley), BNLX had a lot of gear to setup. We're talking a few giant VOX amps and "crazy disco" lights, a Dyno-Fog 2 smoke machine, and a computer that served as backing music and drums. Surprisingly for their "first ever" gig, they seem to have it altogether. They played all their songs from their EP #1, plus a few new one. I don't remember most of them, but one of those songs was "Just Got Paid", which sounds promising.”

Sadly, when Ed passed away in Oct 2019, and I felt that pretty much ended BNLX as a band.

In July 2021, the Mood Swings announced that they are back, their first gig, post-hiatus was for a birthday concert in celebration of the late Ed Ackerson. We haven’t seen the Mood Sings since May 2008, so it’s really cool to see them playing new songs on Friday’s show. One of the new Mood Swings’ song was called “Rocket”, which was played in the middle of their set. Ashley said that the new song will be available in July 2023, as part of a series of 7 inch singles. I’m sure we’ll hear more about it closer to the date.

Before their set finale, “Generation Y”, Ashley introduced the band, with Mark Wade (from The Melismatics) on bass and Mike Reiter on drums.

By the time Run Westy Run took the stage, the Turf Club’s dancefloor was packed.

For those who didn’t know, RWR formed in mid-80s, and pretty soon joined the massive growing Minneapolis music explosion of the 80s and 90s: The Replacements, Husker Du, Soul Asylum, The Jayhawks, and many others. RWR never quite hit the mainstream, but for those into the local Minnesota music scene, they had their fans and supporters.

The three brothers, Kirk, Kyle, and Kraig Johnson - along with Terry Fisher and Bob Joslyn, signed to SST Records and released their self-titled debut album and the follow-up Hardly Not Even, both in 1988. At the height of their popularity, with the release of Green Cat Island, the band joined Soul Asylum on their 1990 national tour.

Run Westy Run quietly called it quits around 1995, although they never officially announced that they broke up. Then, after about twenty years, the band announced they were back with a holiday show at First Avenue in 2013. Kyle Johnson died in 2014, so perhaps the band-get-together was in honor Kyle. Anyway, since then, the holiday shows have become an annual event for the Westies.

Seeing the band on stage, for their Beyond Reason album show, especially the swagger and smile on singer Kirk Johnson, you can tell that the band loves playing live. They look like they are having a fantastic time. They act like they were rock gods, and the screaming fans treated them like they were rock gods…

As expected, the band played mostly new songs from Beyond Reason, including their lead singles, “Milkyway’s Mainframe” and “Christy Casino”. Many of these songs were written decades ago, but now collected and re-worked for the new album. Based on hearing them talk about these RWR songs, they have much more… so perhaps we’ll see another album in the not so far distant future.

Their three-song encore included some of fan favorite’s songs, including the final song, “Cockroach Park”.

While the band never became as famous as Soul Asylum or The Replacements… The band never gave up. In a recent interview with the Star Tribune, guitarist Kraig Johnson, explained, “Even though we never really had our big break back then or whatever, I still had a hell of a time. And that’s why I'm doing this now: It’s so fun.”

Bobby Weir (of the Grateful Dead) will head out on tour starting in Feb 2023. Their tour, billed as Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros (Weir, Don Was, Jay Lane and Jeff Chimenti), features The Wolfpack, a string and brass quintet.

Twin City music scene veterans Run Westy Run will be having an album release party for Beyond Reason, on March 3, 2023. The album is being released on the band’s new Cardinal Drive imprint and will be available on CD and digital. A vinyl release is pending.

This is really exciting news, since it’s been 33 years since their last album Green Cat Island (from 1990)! We’ve previously written how the band got their name from a children book by Gudrun Alcock, about a rebellious pre-teen runaway named Westy. They first came to fame in the 90s, along with other breakthrough acts like Soul Asylum, The Replacements, and Hüsker Dü.

For many years, the brothers (Kirk, Kyle, and Kraig Johnson) would play an annual holiday show in the Twin City area. Kyle Johnson died in 2014, so currently the Run Westy Run lineup will feature Kirk Johnson (vocals), Kraig Johnson (guitar), Terry Fisher (guitar), Paul McFarland (bass) and Peter Anderson (drums).

We’re excited to hear the new Beyond Reason songs.

The Mood Swings will open the show. Female-fronted band featuring guitarists/singers Ashley Ackerson and Sallie Watson, playing fuzzpop/punk-ish songs. Ashley is married to Ed Ackerson (from Polara), who passed away in Oct 2019.

We saw the band in May 2008 and wrote, “Thoroughly exploiting my weakness for co-ed punk were the Mood Swings. The Mood Swings are what I would call no-scream girl-punk. Sometimes I forget that female-vocalized punk can still have an edge and an energy without being angry or harsh (Though in all honesty: the good stuff is often both). This narrow-mindedness is no doubt due to stubborn attachment to my Bikini Kill, Babes in Toyland and Muffs collections. But anyway The Mood Swings were lovely. Pop-punk powerhouse Mod Sun is touring in support of his album God Save The Teen (Big Noise).

I actually had no idea his fiancée is singer-songwriter Avril Lavigne (I thought she was married to the guy from Nickelback). Apparently the two lovebirds had a massive hit with their 2021 single “Flames” (>106 million streams), and he’s dedicated a song called “Avril’s Song,” to his “soulmate” and donning a vulnerable collaboration with her on “Shelter.”

Mod Sun shares, “I dove deep into the power of love on this album, my song ‘Shelter’ features my fiancée Avril Lavigne, and is all about finding protection from the world in the person you are with. My song ‘SOS’ featuring Royal & The Serpent is all about the magic of love at first sight and being completely helpless to the power it has on you. I'm proud, I'm grateful, I'm at my best as an artist right now and that's what this album is to me.”

The Gaslight Anthem are on their reunion tour, stopping by The Midland Theatre in Kansas City, Missouri, and the Fillmore in Minneapolis, Minnesota. W♥M recaps the two concerts.

Scranton, PA alt rockers Tigers Jaw have been opening on this leg, with a forty-five-minute set, with cuts drawn from their six full-length albums, the most recent being last year’s I Won’t Care How You’ll Remember Me (on Hopeless Records) with a new EP, Old Clothes, due out October 28^th, with the title track serving as the lead single.  

The group benefits from having co-lead singers in guitarist Ben Walsh (who sang most of the set’s first-half songs) and keyboardist Brianna Collins who stepped away from her stack to sing most of the later set songs, notably on 2017’s “June” and last year’s “Commit” with Collins singing, “An eclipse only shines from a distance, you can't make sense of a world you're not in.”

Fans had been left wondering, and checking social media all day, as New Jersey’s The Gaslight Anthem were scheduled to play The Midland in Kansas City as part of their reunion tour, their first since a 2015 hiatus (and not counting some brief 2018 dates), but singer-songwriter Brian Fallon had lost his voice at their Salt Lake City show, forcing a cancellation in Denver, and three subsequent days of rest for this, their potential first show back.  

The good news was that Fallon’s voice (though still raspy on the edges) had returned, and helped propel their ninety-minute set, with the band leader as verbose and talkative as always, despite the setback.  The set would start gently, with an almost whispered first verse of 2014’s “Get Hurt”, but quickly ramp up from there.  

“Last time you were pissed at me, now it’s Denver!” Fallon emoted after a couple songs in, saying he felt he got maybe too much rest mostly sleeping for the last three days, so seemed to be making up for it, by engaging audience members in conversation and espousing whatever was on his mind.

Other Fallon-speak topics covered included The Walking Dead/ Norman Reedus hair, Aaron Judge / NY Yankees, The Strokes, the NFL, Brooklyn/Jay-Z, The National, KC BBQ, Freebird, diabetes, and many others.  

“Get Hurt” was even dedicated to Fallon’s time in Colorado, referring to his bed rest and the show cancellation.  2008’s “High Lonesome” cribs a Counting Crows lyric and it was with 2007’s “Wooderson”, that Fallon called an audible and the band began to start veering from the printed setlist.  “The Patient Ferris Wheel” was played via a fan request, and another fan had made an elaborate, lighted sign to request the song, “Halloween” which Fallon noticed right before the band was to play it anyway.

The encore-less set would end with the one-two punch of 2012’s “45” whose “see you on the flipside” lyrics Fallon dedicated to openers Tigers Jaw, who are on the last dates of this leg, and an extended version of the band’s biggest radio hit “The ‘59 Sound” with Fallon asking in verse, “Did you hear your favorite song, one last time?”  From the crowd’s loud reaction all night, it’s safe to say they did.

Gaslight Anthem at The Fillmore, Minneapolis, MN (09/24/2022)

By the start of the third song the lead singer of The Gaslight Anthem, Brian Fallon, had a perplexed look as he gazed down to the set list at his feet.  Fallon has a nimble, fluid-thinking mind and he thought out loud why he would have picked the third song as the third song.  He blamed it on his throat which was at 30% and felt like it was dragged to hell by the devil, himself.  He then went onto an extemporaneous jag that touched on not smoking pot, watching the Walking Dead in his hotel room, props to the crowd and venue, shout-outs to The Replacements and the underrated Soul Asylum and how it is agreed upon that everyone in the venue hates Tom Brady.  At least that’s what I caught.  Oh yeah, also no refunds for the rasp in his voice.

Tigers Jaw opened up the evening with two lead vocals: Ben Walsh also playing the rhythm guitar and Brianna Collins playing the keyboard.  Based in Scranton, Pennsylvania, the band is fronting the first half of the tour and it was nice to see co-lead vocals, especially Collins airy voice and keyboard accents lofting above the guitar-driven chords of the rest of the band

Tigers Jaw played “Old Clothes” a new EP to be released October 28^th, then followed with “Plane vs Tank vs Submarine” from their debut album from 2008 which gathered big applause from the sold out crowd that showed up early.  “Hum” had a nice distortion transition into “I Won’t Care How You Remember Me.” They finished strong with “Commit”, “Guardian” and “Anniversary” with lyrics which seem fitting for the ailing lead singer of the next band:

I'm doing alright, I'll give it a try anyway

Kansas City Setlist “Minneapolis” Setlist

Fallon finally figured it out by the seventh song.  The little “huh” that bugged him when he looked at the set list earlier was actually the set list from the previous show in Kansas City.  Fallon then grabbed his smart phone and consulted with members of the band.  He wanted to let the audience know that even though blame would not be assigned, nobody currently on the stage made the mistake and whoever did was buying everyone dinner the next night. 

And while Fallon and the band launched into “The Queen of Lower Chelsea” a stagehand scurried about with the updated list. 

After “Miles Davis and the Cool” and a brief, subtle cover of Mother Love Bone’s “Chloe Dancer”, it was full, wide-open rock starting with “Stay Vicious” and “American Slang” and ending with the triumphant couplet of “45” and “The 59 Sound”. 

Fallon told the crowd they were going right up to the curfew, and they weren’t going to waste any time with an encore.  He wasn’t a fan of encores.  He said that only a few bands should practice them.  He mentioned Metallica and The Beastie Boys. 

For a man with 30% of a voice he sure provided a lot of opinions, the kind of sage rock wisdom that told a fan who shouted for Paul Westerberg’s “Dyslexic Heart”: “No”.

With The Get Up Kids playing the Turf Club in St Paul this coming October 03, 2021, let’s take a look back at the band 10 years ago, at the defunct Triple Rock Social Club in Minneapolis on July 10, 2011. They were just as popular now as they were a decade ago.

The Get Up Kids haven't been around for a few years, but they are NOT forgotten, as evident by the nice turnout for the band on a hot Sunday evening at the Triple Rock Social Club. And you know what that means: three bands for triple the rock.

Major Crimes

I thought the first band, Major Crimes, sounded great. They were tight, was especially impressed with the drums. As it turns out, this trio went under the name Brian Bonz and the Major Crimes (Bonz is the drummer), but what's interesting is that Bonz is not doing the vocals on stage. Instead, singing duties were left to the guitarist and bassist.

The Globes

The Globes were up next. I thought their debut Barsuk album, Future Self, was well produced, and I was glad to see they carry their spacey progressive rock sound live. As expected, they did a lot of songs from their album, complete with strange neck playing of the guitars, cowbells, and weird loops and guitar pedals.

For those who aren't familiar with The Get Up Kids, they were maybe unfairly grouped together with the emo scene of the 90s. This scene includes such hot acts like Dashboard Confessional, Thursday, Jimmy Eat World, and Saves the Day. While the band hated this tag, I believe it also help boost their rise in popularity.

What I liked about their setlist, is that they get it right: they'll sandwich new songs between old favorites, like "Woodson", etc. You can always tell which one were the old songs as everyone is singing along.

Jim Suptic told this story about how they were at Summerfest and they had started a massive "USA" chant. Hilariously the "USA" chants was repeated throughout the show.

When the last song, "Walking on a Wire", was done, the crowd went into the usual "USA" chant for the traditional encore. The true irony is that they opened up their encore with a cover of UK's Blur song "Girls and Boys". This is quite an interesting cover choice for the band, and as much as I enjoyed the cover, the song was lost on its younger audience who has probably never heard of the song and/or could care less.

The other three encore songs included two Get Up Kids favorites "Don't Hate Me" and "Ten Minutes", and between those two songs was another cover: The Replacements' "Beer For Breakfast". The 'Mats was clearly a song choice chosen for the Minneapolis show. Outro song was Lou Reed's "Perfect Day". I don't know if the outro song was a request by the band, but it seems quite fitting for this show.

The Get Up Kids' fifth studio album, There Are Rules, was released in January. Go see them on tour to welcome them back.

90s alternative rock The Lemonheads headlined First Avenue’s mainroom on Saturday, May 11th, in support of his all-covers album Varshons 2.

In typical rock star schedule, Tommy Stinson was fashionably late to open the show. Not a surprise, and to be honest, it’s to be expected. If you don’t know who Stinson is, he’s probably best known for being the bass player for The Replacements (and later joined Guns & Roses in the late 90s and Soul Asylum in the mid ‘00!) … so he’s a bit of a legend in most music circle.

Stinson also known for creating Bash & Pop shortly after the ‘Mats broke up in 1991, and based on songs on his setlist, that band’s music is still reflective of Stinson’s love for those songs. In fact, after breaking up the band in 1994, Stinson resurrected the band in 2015, with a proper tour (we caught Bash & Pop in Sep 2015).

With most, if not all, of Stinson’s previous appearance, he never had a written setlist, he explained that the reason why he doesn’t have a setlist anymore is because he’s wearing glasses now and simply cannot read the setlist. As a result, he just plays random songs. Sure, he does have some idea (for example, he always end with Bash & Pop’s “Friday Night (Is Killing Me)”), but he tends to just play songs off the cuff. Sometime it’s amazing, hearing rarely heard songs, but sometime it’s a bit of an annoyance as Stinson is taking up to three minutes to tune his guitar (this could’ve been planned better).

Since this was Stinson’s somewhat “home show”, there were definitely some huge Replacements fans in the audience… Some of them screaming out various ‘Mats songs when Stinson announced that it would be “All request Saturday!”. He did take some request, playing “Zero To Stupid” and “Nothing”.

Near the end of his set, Stinson took off his coat and was a little confused about the guitar plug. After hearing some fans give him a hard time, Stinson jokingly fired back, “I’m f****ing 52, and I don’t give a sh**!” He pretty much summed it up, but I don’t honestly think he would give a f**** when he was in his 20s either.

Since Stinson was late, it pushed The Lemonheads start time about 15 later than advertised.

As you know, I first came to being The Lemonheads fan around the time they were promoting It's a Shame About Ray with its title track as single in 1992. They were featured on MTV’s 120 Minutes, but frontsman Evan Dando seemed more popular in the UK (I hate to say it, but for a time, it just felt like the Lemonheads were ignoring the USA).

We finally got to see Evan Dando in Feb 2010 and described it as, “Conversely, watching Evan Dando perform in 2010 hardly differed from watching him with the Lemonheads in 1992. I came to this conclusion when I literally felt bummed out. Few things prompt soul pain like a forty-two-year-old “slacker sex kitten” whose unassuming stage presence suggests a lifetime of discomfort. Dando arrived late to the venue, cruised through his set on autopilot, barely spoke a coherent word to his fans, and exited amidst a POOF of rose-colored fog.”

We saw Dando again at NXNE 2011 in Canada, and this time he was with his old friend Juliana Hatfield. It wasn’t a full Lemonheads setlist, but there was enough there that left us satisfied, “I was also happy with their setlist, I was worried that they would be doing new songs, but they did a bunch of old Lemonheads song (including "Into Your Arms", "Bit Part" and "Drug Buddy") and two Juliana numbers ("Choose Drugs" and "Dear Anonymous"). None of the three big hits were played, but I suspect that has more to do with the two of them playing acoustics vs a full band.”

My suspicion was right, as The Lemonheads, with a full band, came to Minneapolis in October 2011 and basically played the entire It’s a Shame About Ray album.

With this new 2019 tour, it’s in support of The Lemonheads’ Varshons 2, which is an all-covers album (the follow-up to the original all-cover album ten years prior called Varshons). So as expected, a bunch over cover songs were played, but oddly songs that would make sense for Minneapolis, such as The Jayhawks’ “Settled Down Like Rain” or Paul Westerberg’s “Things”, were not played.

Maybe they’ve gotten all the 90s songs out of their system with their 2011 tour, but very few old songs were played. They did do their signature hit single, “It’s a Shame About Ray” and “Rudderless” a few songs after, but it’s mostly songs I didn’t recognized or non-Lemonheads songs.

The other thing I wanted to mention is that Evan Dando was extremely laid back, like all his previous appearances, he rarely spoke between songs and barely moved. It’s not the most exciting show to see, but if you’re a Lemonheads fan, you probably used to this or it didn’t really matter.
