Has it really been ten years? Where did those days just disappear? Lucius is out celebrating their anniversary of Wildewoman, stopping by Thursday, January 25th. They’ve also been asked to headline annual The Current Anniversary Celebration.

Of course, we were one of the first people to see Lucius at their first appearance in Minneapolis on 24 Oct 2013 when they were touring for Wildewoman: “Turnout to the Lucius show was terrific, for a Thursday night. It tells me that the next time the New York band come back around, that they're going to play a bigger venue, especially if they continue with their catchy 60s girl-group songs. Led by the two girl singers, Jess Wolfe & Holly Laessig, who dressed alike, look alike, and sings alike. They made it clear that they were extremely grateful to be in Minneapolis for the first time (although one of their guitarists said he has family here and would visit every Summer when he was younger). As you can see from their setlist, the band played every song known to them. So if you've been listening to their EP and album Wildewoman, you will have a fantastic time.”

This co-headlining Mary Chapin Carpenter and Shawn Colvin was originally sold out on October 13… but for whatever reasons, the show is now rescheduled for January 26, 2024, at the Pantages Theatre.

Mary Chapin Carpenter and Shawn Colvin are longtime friends and have already toured extensively earlier in October. These make-up dates are one-off, but the two will reunite once again for the Pantages show.

Carpenter needs no introduction. She has sold over 16 million records, has won five Grammy Awards (with 18 nominations), two CMA awards, two ACM awards, and one of the few female members of the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame.

Shawn Colvin has her first Grammy awards for her debut album Steady On, in 1989, and has since established herself as a mainstay of the contemporary folk music scene ever since. Shawn was recently recognized for her career accomplishments when she was honored with the 2016 Lifetime Achievement Trailblazer Award by the Americana Music Association.

Hip-hop enthusiasts have reason to celebrate as the dynamic rap duo Snotty Nose Rez Kids (Yung Trybez and Young D) launches their major label debut with the release of “I Got Paid Today” (featuring beats by Boogey The Beat) … and to celebrate, they’re expanding their Hot Planet Tour and will be stopping by the Fine Line Music Café in Minneapolis on January 26, 2024.

“We really wanted to capture that feeling when you just get paid and you're thinkin’ 'bout all the ways you're gonna spend that money, but also that low feeling when you're broke again and gotta wait around till that next payment comes in. We brought in our homies, Tia Wood and Lex Leosis, for vocals on the track and they really brought a new energy to the song,” said Yung Trybez.

Red Van Records singer-songwriter Levi Hummon announces his headlining Another Shot Tour… stopping by the 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis on January 26, 2024.

“I can’t wait to get back on the road. I have built a really special team over the last year and lots of new fans across socials,” said Hummon. “I’m so excited to play some of the new music we’ve been working on and the brand new version of 'Paying For It.'”

Hummon is referring to a new a studio version of “Paying For It” with Walker Hayes, his debut song for Red Van Records. Originally recorded and released in 2021, Hummon has been playing the song since that time while on the road, and it has become a fan favorite and viral hit.

It’s Yellow Ostrich’s 3rd Annual Winter Shindig residency at the Icehouse, starting on January 10th, 2024.

We saw Yellow Ostrich at Pianos, in New York, in Feb 2014 and wrote, “I listened to Yellow Ostrich’s music the day before the show and knew immediately that I wanted to see them live. They have a lo-fi indie rock sound with vocals from Alex Schaaf (also member of The Chairs) whose voice is a mixture of fun.’s Nate Ruess and Ben Folds. Other band members include talented musicians: Jared Van Fleet (guitar/keyboard), Zach Rose (bass), and Michael Tapper (drums).”

The band writes:

Yellow Ostrich's Winter Shindig is back for a third year in January 2024, taking place over four consecutive Wednesdays. Each week will feature different setlists and surprises, along with different supporting bands each night (hand-picked by YO).

Yellow Ostrich is a long-running project led by Minneapolis-based songwriter Alex Schaaf, who started the band in Brooklyn in 2010 before moving it to the Midwest. The band released Soft in 2022 on Barsuk Records, the first new music in seven years to be released by Schaaf under the Yellow Ostrich moniker, since he paused the project to explore new musical identities on a handful of excellent self-released albums. This was followed by Make it Make Sense (EP) in January of 2023. The latest full-length, Soft, takes its name from the lyric that stands as a thesis for the entire album, a beautiful and haunting rumination on the pitfalls and pressures of traditional masculinity and on Schaaf's drive toward vulnerability and tenderness as core tenets of his being.

Bathtub Cig is the intimate depression pop project of Hilary James. Born in a Minneapolis bedroom the spring of 2017, it is an honest attempt at coping with her long struggle with mental health. She is joined by Dave Power on drums, Skyler Nowinski on bass, and Hannah Heble on synth, flute and harmony. Their 2018 debut EP “Old Light” draws comparisons to a synth-pop version of Frankie Cosmo with raw lyrics.

2021 Ep “bed” is both a dream-like and hazy musing on quarantine as well as a heartbreaking attempt to cope with grief. In a departure from James’ first full band EP “Old Light”, this new release is a stripped down solo voyage. Hilary is joined by Addie Strei (Adelyn Rose) on clarinet, flute, and bass to create beautiful textures to balance out the loneliness of the electric guitar. Their 2022 debut full length “Night Blindness” has been described as a clever and dark Gen Z Ode, putting our hardest thoughts into music.

Megasound is a rock band brought to you by the minds behind Bad Bad Hats (Kerry Alexander and Chris Hoge) and Party Nails (Elana Carroll).

We’ve seen a few of these artists, for example She’s Green from 27 Sep 2023, “Local shoegazing band she’s green, featuring Zofia on vocals, Teddy on bass, Liam on guitars, Raines on guitars, and Kevin on drums, opened the show. Although, according to Zofia, the group is from the area, but it was their first time playing the Turf Club. We’ve previously mentioned their Minneapolis shows, such as in August 2023 or January 2022 … but never mentioned they’ve played St Paul. The group is still relatively new, so they’re introducing some new songs, such as “Clobber”. At least that’s the title they currently agreed on. Their debut EP, Wisteria came out in June 2023.”

Brody checked out Chicago’s Brigitte Calls Me Baby at Surly Brewing Co. in Minneapolis, as part of the special Summer of Sound set for The Current: Happy Hour. The free event was hosted by Jill Riley, who provided the soundtrack, and Brigitte Calls Me Baby provided the live set.

The Current described Brigitte Calls Me Baby as a unique grade of pop, while Brody compared them to The Smiths (Morrissey).

The female-led discodelic soul band Say She She is named after Nile Rodgers’s “C’est chi-chi!: It’s Chic!”

Say She She features Piya Malik (former backing singer for Chicano Batman), Nya Gazelle Brown (former 79.5), and Sabrina Cunningham.

The trio is fairly new, having released their debut 45 Forget Me Not b/w Blow My Mind in June 2022 via Colemine/Karma Chief Records.

Psychedelic soul singer Abby Jeanne will open the show. Her two new singles, “Sage & Cigarettes” and “Know Better” are out now via Eraserhood Sound.

The second Sparkyard Sound Series, presented by 89.3 The Current and Sue McLean, will be taking place Friday, July 28th. The first of the series featured Grace Potter in June 13, which we described as, “… the Sparkyard Sound Series at Bauhaus Brew Labs presented by 89.3 The Current. We last saw Lucius in May 2019 and wrote, “The mutual love affair between the Twin Cities and Lucius continues – the LA by-way-of Brooklyn foursome (led by Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig, with Dan Molad and Peter Lalish) has played the area very regularly in the last several years-- from venues as small as radio studio and record store appearances, to as large as arenas, as part of Roger Waters’ band on his last world tour.”

This should be a great show.

It could not have been a better night for the beginning of the Sparkyard Sound Series at Bauhaus Brew Labs presented by 89.3 The Current. Sue McClean & Associates always put on a great show and last night was no exception as Grace Potter rolled into town under clear skies, low humidity and a setting summer sun.

Local Minneapolis band Kiss the Tiger opened the evening. On their website the band describes their music as: “… good old fashioned rock and roll… a clean burning fire.” And since 2016 they have been a local favorite.

Kiss the Tiger is fronted by dynamic lead singer Meghan Kreidler and she is backed by a solid crew with Michael Anderson on rhythm guitar, Bridger Fruth on lead guitar, Paul DeLong on bass and Jay DeHut on drums.

“Tuesday night! Rock and roll!” Shouted Kreidler as she engaged the crowd to sing along with “Motel Room” and “I Got Love.” Then there was “Out of Mind” an Arabesque, cinematic song that sent the band into an extended guitar solo by Fruth. They also played “Hold on Love”, a song that is in the Current’s Chart Show Hall of Fame for holding the #1 spot for nine straight weeks.

Grace Potter then came on stage with a bundle of burning sage and didn’t waste any time by charging the crowd with “Medicine.”

“I’m falling apart,” Potter said between songs as she worked on her clothing ensemble. “My clothing doesn’t want to stay on.”

She then segued about being from Vermont and having affinity for Minnesotans and their ability to shed clothes as soon as the winter weather reaches 40 degrees Fahrenheit.

Although she played songs from her previous albums as a solo artist and with the Nocturnals, Potter is on the road promoting her latest album Mother Road, which is out August 18^th. The album was born out of a time during the pandemic when she was living in Vermont, married with one child and recovering from a miscarriage during a brutal winter. To recover/escape Potter took an opportunity to pick up one of the family cars in Los Angeles and turn it into an extended road trip on Route 66.

The road is home for most musicians and Potter was in her element as she played from extended cannon like “Stuck in the Middle” a cover that was the theme song to the TV show “Grace and Frankie.” Then there was “You and Tequila”, a hit she sang with Kenny Chesney. And feeling adventurous, she even pulled out “Someone to Love”, a song she did for the Disney movie Tangled.

A crowd favorite was “The Lion and the Beast”, which had the band on full tilt and Potter channeling her inner Janis Joplin with a voice that seems to come all the way from her toes.

“We have a hard out,” Potter said to the crowd. Being an outdoor show, there could be no music after 10pm. She mentioned that: “Apparently trains are not louder than rock and roll,” pondering who would even live next to an industrial park with train tracks nearby.”

She may have had a hard out, but Potter was determined to sing louder than any oncoming train to the very end.

Milwaukee-based singer-songwriter Trapper Schoepp stopped by the 7th Street Entry, in Minneapolis, on Friday night, to play songs from his forthcoming album Siren Songs (available April 21 via Grand Phony and Rootsy).

Opening the show was Laura Hugo. The local singer/songwriter was originally from the Navajo Nation in Arizona. She was quite frank with her personal life… like how she tried to commit suicide.

She also mentioned how she was so grateful to make it on The Current (local radio station) showcase for emerging artists earlier this year. She noted that they edit out a lot of things, but was surprised to hear they kept in her shoutout to her guitar tuner. The six-song set was recorded live at the Sacred Heart Music Center in Duluth, Minnesota.

Hugo covered Gillian Welch’s “Look At Miss Ohio” early in the set, and closed her set with her 2017 debut hit single, “Not Even A Little Bit”.

Next up was Becky Kapell, with Paul. They’re operating as one half of her normally full band Becky Kapell and The Fat 6, a real swampy, honky-tonk local band.

Kapell has a long history, saying how she lived in St Paul for a while… then moved to Portland, got married, and returned back to St Paul, where she is residing now. “I was 42 when I started playing guitar… I’m older than that now,” she concluded.

Highlight of her set was the title track from Idle Down, with its high-octane intro lyrics, “Rev it up, let it rip, turn up the radio.”

Wisconsin’s Trapper Schoepp and his full band, came on stage and just quickly launched into their set - 20 minutes earlier than advertised! The band was just eager to play, rather than wait for their announced time.

The Trapper Schoepp Band was started when Trapper and his brother Tanner Schoepp were in high school. They recorded and released A Change in the Weather in 2007. Some band changes, which created Trapper Schoepp & the Shades… and that’s how we first heard of the group, in November 2013: “Milwaukee’s young, but accomplished Trapper Schoepp and the Shades, would turn the Fine Line completely on its head. Now, dear readers, I have been seriously blessed with some truly excellent opening acts these last few shows: I saw Sons of Hippies pummel, Strange Names seduce and had the pleasure of seeing Sean Wheeler and Zander Schloss charm the pants off the good folks awaiting Mark Lanegan in Chicago. Trapper Schoepp and his outfit of rock and roll wild ones were no exception. In fact, they are probably my favorite live acts this year. Bands like this serve as a gentle reminder as to why I go to shows so early: to get a good spot (near the stage, of course) and, hopefully, to make a new discovery. I admit, when the band hit the stage, I was immediately taken with the Schoepp brothers’ (Tanner plays bass) luxurious locks. I made the Harry Styles association (sorry fellas) but it was trivial, short lived detail; Trapper plunged his guitar pick deep into those silver strings and the Shades’ free-wheeling, raucous performance began. Their sound has an instantly likeable Tom Petty jangle, with lots of swaggering blues-rock à la Faces or modern bar band predecessors Marah and a heavy dose of crunchy 70’s power pop.”

Since then, we’ve been keeping a close eye on Trapper, seeing him with Austin Lucas in Dec 2013, with Lydia Loveless in July 2015, with Big Star in Sep 2015, American Scarecrows in Oct 2015, and finally with Ha Ha Tonka in May 2017.

So we have a little history with the band and have always loved their rock/roots sound. With this 2023 tour (after a few years being absent from touring due to the pandemic), it would seem that the band decided to play mostly new songs from Siren Songs. Which technically wasn’t available publicly … but it was available to anyone attending at the 7th Street Entry.

They started their set with a new one, “Cliffs of Dover”, followed by “Queen of the Mist”, a song about the crazy Annie Edson Taylor who was the first person to survive a trip over Niagara Falls in a barrel. The funny thing is that she volunteered a cat to go in her barrel. The cat survived, here’s a photo of the cat and Annie posing for a photo with her Queen of the Mist barrel.

The most important song on the set was “On, Wisconsin”, a song that Bob Dylan started in 1961, but never finished. The lyric manuscript appeared in an auction, and Trapper Schoepp said to himself, “I needed to finish what was started.”

Schoepp wrote the melodies and filled in some missing lyrics, and sent it to Bob Dylan … and to Schoepp’s shock, Dylan approved it. That’s how “On, Wisconsin” was written, and it appeared on their previous album Primetime Illusion.

The real reason why Dylan is so important, is because Dylan inspired Schoepp to become a musician. While recovering from an injury, he heard Dylan’s “Hurricane” in the movie of the same name, as mentioned in Republican Eagle newspaper. It would’ve been absolutely terrible if Dylan hated the song.

Trapper Schoepp’s Siren Songs will be available to the public on April 21, on Grand Phony for the US market and Rootsy for the UK market.

Celebrating local radio station The Current’s 18th Anniversary, they’ve double booked Semisonic and Chastity Brown at First Avenue on January 27 and 28.

As soon as the dates were announced, both shows have sold out… although Semisonic said that a limited number of tickets for Friday’s show was released to the public.
