Manchester’s The 1975 is returning to Minneapolis at the Armory this December 14, 2022.

We saw the band in May 2017 and said, “For at least this night, Prince got it wrong— On a rainy, windswept night in St. Paul, a crowd 5,000 strong at a sold-out Roy Wilkins Auditorium didn’t party like it was 1999… they partied like it was The 1975.”

Country singer Nikki Lane is touring in support of her fourth album Denim & Diamonds. The record came out in September via New West Records. The 10-song project was produced and mixed by Joshua Homme at his Pink Duck Studios in Burbank, CA and is Lane’s first album in five years.   

Lane will stop by the Fine Line Music Cafe in Minneapolis on December 17, 2022.

With the holiday season in full swing, this is likely the last busy live music week of the season (in terms of national touring bands), so find a show while you can. The weather is cooperating so far too, with temps swinging up from the 60s down to the 20s, but more constant cold and snow & ice will be more of a thing soon.

Here’s what’s happening in the Kansas City metro December 5th-11th.

(Several artists are still requiring precautions for entry, so check with the venue and/or assume vaccination proof, might still be required)

MONDAY DEC 5

The Piano Guys, The Midland. $44.50-$84.50

The instrumental group (Jon Schmidt, Steven Sharp Nelson, Paul Anderson and Al van der Beek) has been touring extensively, in support of their latest studio album '10', released in Nov. 2020 as a celebration of their 10-year anniversary. The newest album follows up 2018's 'Limitless' which reached #1 on Billboard's New Age chart. Their debut self-titled album was released back in 2012 and was certified Gold by the RIAA and the group performs a mix of classical crossover, orchestral pop and cello rock.

TUESDAY DEC 6

Kansas City Jazz Orchestra, “The Family” featuring Lonnie and Chloe McFadden, Kauffman Center. $33.50-$68.50

Swing into the holiday spirit with the Kansas City Jazz Orchestra and KC's beloved father-daughter duo, Chloe and Lonnie McFadden! The McFaddens are considered local jazz royalty and sharing their story are Lonnie and Chloe, inviting us all to an illustrative "holiday dinner" where everyone is welcome.

Wet Leg, The Truman, $25-$44

Finally, KC gets their chance to recline on the Chaise Lounge! Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers each wear a small gold necklace made by Hester: one that says Wet, and one that says Leg. The duo only released their debut single, “Chaise Lounge”, in June 2021, but its dry wit and thumping indie-disco beat turned it into a runaway hit.

We caught them relatively early, in March in Minneapolis and since then, have supported acts from CHVRCHES to Idles, sold out their entire 2022 tour with only two songs out (“Wet Dream” followed in September) and now, with latest single “Too Late Now,” an album on the horizon and having been ranked #2 in the BBC Sound of 2022 list, their future only looks brighter.

WEDNESDAY DEC 7

Amon Amarth with Carcass, Obituary, Cattle Decapitation, Uptown. $39.50-$97.25

This headbanging Fall 2022 North American tour in is support of their newest album The Great Heathen Army, which was released in August and the lineup for the Great Heathen Army Tour is stacked, with fellow death metallers Carcass, Obituary, and Cattle Decapitation filling out the bill.

Lemonheads, Bass Drum Of Death, On Being An Angel, Madrid Theater, $30

Thirty years later, It’s still a shame about Ray.

Evan Dando and company return to play the fabled album in its entirety, along with numerous other hits. Live, the show moves seamlessly from opening as a trio, to Dando alone with an extended acoustic set, to the full band performing the album, and even Dando solo on drums. We caught Lemonheads last, pre-pandemic in Minneapolis in 2019 but also saw them back in 2011 when they also played the fabled album in full.

Bass Drum of Death is a garage punk band from Oxford, Mississippi currently signed to Fat Possum Records and Austin TX band On Being an Angel who plays “rackety mid-fi melodies with a beautifully sad and understated vocal”.

Kansas City Ballet Presents The Nutcracker December 7-24, Kauffman Center, $64.50-$258.50

An annual holiday tradition! The classic, Victorian-era story by E.T.A. Hoffman features Clara, the Nutcracker Prince, Dr. Drosselmeier and the Sugar Plum Fairy and is a magical theatrical experience wrapped with memorable costumes, grand sets, and captivating choreography. Thru Xmas Eve.

THURSDAY DEC 8

The 1975, Cable Dahmer Arena- Independence, $160-$450

We knew them when… We’ve seen the still-buzzing Manchester UK band live pretty regularly since their initial US appearance at SXSW 2013 and can safely say they’re still growing bigger, even a decade since they made that memorable initial first impression.

The band recently released “Happiness,” the harmonic new single from newest album, Being Funny In A Foreign Language, which came out in October. The new album is the band’s fifth release and first since 2020’s Notes on a Conditional Form and after having to cancel a planned 2021 tour, the band has embarked on their At Their Very Best North America tour

FRIDAY DEC 9

Switchfoot, Uptown Theater, $25-$75

The Grammy Award-winning rock band has a brand-new holiday record, this is our Christmas album, infusing their signature West Coast sound to a number of holiday classics and five, new original Christmas songs.

“Christmas is an emotional treasure chest for a songwriter to pull from,” lead Singer Jon Foreman says. “It’s a season stretched tight with contradictions: celebrating the free gifts of love and grace with an outburst of materialist capitalist consumption. An emotional roller coaster of family and friends, hopes and scars- bringing out the worst and the best in all of us.”

We caught them live back in 2015 and with a Christian slant to many of their songs, a holiday tour celebrating the reason for the season, seems on point.

Aaron Lewis, Ameristar, $73-$95

It’s been a while… since Aaron and band Staind have hit stages, but he’s ably filled his time with a country-tinged solo career – on this Acoustic Tour, "Frayed at Both Ends," expect plenty of solo songs with a few band songs peppered in, all stripped down.

“Jurassic World,” Dec. 9-11, T-Mobile Center. $17-$115

The movie mythos comes to life in an arena-sized presentation!

Similar to the Marvel Live! Show we caught in 2017, and also produced by Feld Entertainment, your trip to Isla Nublar takes a terrifying, unexpected turn when Indominus rex escapes and causes chaos! Watch as a team of scientists unravels a corrupt plan and saves Jeanie, a Troodon dinosaur, from a terrible fate. Along the way, experience some of the most iconic dinosaurs including Blue the Raptor, Stegosaurus, Triceratops and the mighty Tyrannosaurus Rex!

Fan favorite Bumpy, from the DreamWorks Animation Television action-adventure series Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous, is also featured- named for her asymmetrical head bumps, Bumpy is friendly and food motivated. With her accelerated growth rate, the herbivore grows from baby to adult during the show.

SATURDAY DEC 10

Trampled by Turtles w Sumbuck, Uptown Theater, $35-$55

The celebrated Minnesota sextet is out in support of their new album, Alpenglow which released in October (on Thirty Tigers). Their first new album in four years – produced by Jeff Tweedy of Wilco – consists of 11 new songs that feature the Duluth MN-based group’s signature blend of rock, folk, punk, country, and progressive bluegrass.

The combination of lead singer and songwriter Dave Simonett’s lyrics, the band’s signature layered strings and robust harmonies, and Tweedy’s perspective has resulted in a thoughtfully composed record that finds Trampled reaching new heights.

Named after the optical phenomenon that washes mountains on the horizon in a pinkish red glow at dusk and dawn, change is a recurring theme in Alpenglow’s songs – whether it’s a change of pace, change of perspective, or change of heart, Simonett is nostalgic for the way things used to be but also optimistic about the future.

Simonett (guitar), Erik Berry (mandolin), Ryan Young (fiddle), Dave Carroll (banjo), Tim Saxhaug (bass), and Eamonn McLain (cello) operate as a rock band that employs string instrumentation with folk and punk influences and being mostly MN-based, we’ve certainly become a fan along the way, both of the band and their curated Festival Palomino that ran for several years. WHM just caught the tour live last month and have seen them often over the last decade plus.

Travis Tritt, Ameristar, $75-$95

Despite having to cancel shows last month touring with co-headliner Chris Janson, the longtime Country star is back on the road solo. Tritt has amassed more than 30 million in career album sales, two GRAMMY® Awards, four CMA Awards, a Billboard Music Award, is a member of the world-famous Grand Ole Opry, and much more.

Among his eleven studio albums and numerous charted singles are five number ones and 20 Top 10 hits, including “Help Me Hold On,” “Anymore,” “Can I Trust You with My Heart,” “Foolish Pride,” “Best of Intentions,” “I’m Gonna Be Somebody,” “Modern Day Bonnie and Clyde,” “Here’s A Quarter,” “It’s A Great Day To Be Alive.”

SUNDAY DEC 11

Leo Kottke, Madrid Theater, $52-$69

Acoustic guitarist Leo Kottke was born in Athens, GA, but has known Minnesota as his longtime home, and it’s a regular tradition that he tours the Midwest in November and December.

Kottke's 1971 major-label debut, “Mudlark,” positioned him in the singer/songwriter vein, despite his wishes to remain an instrumental performer and his collaboration with Phish bassist Mike Gordon, “Clone,” caught audiences' attention back in 2002. Kottke and Gordon followed with 2005’s Sixty-Six Steps (produced by Prince producer David Z) and they collaborated again with 2020’s Noon.

Kottke has been awarded two Grammy nominations; a Doctorate in Music Performance by the Peck School of Music at the U of Wisconsin, Milwaukee; and a Certificate of Significant Achievement in Not Playing the Trombone from U of Texas at Brownsville with Texas Southmost College.

Germany’s Giant Rooks is touring in support of their successful debut album Rookery. The record was a massive hit in their country, hitting #3 in the album charts, and had over 200 million streams… thanks to their breakout cover of Suzanne Vega’s “Tom’s Diner” with AnnenMayKantereit. The single notably crashed the Spotify Top 200 in 30 markets and cracked the Billboard Hot 100 at #83 and the ARIA Top 50 at #18.

The band (singer Frederik Rabe, guitarist Finn Schwieters, bassist Luca Göttner, keyboarder Jonathan Wischniowski, and drummer Finn Thomas) recently released their single, “Morning Blue.”

We haven’t written about Glasgow’s Snow Patrol in over ten years, so we’re very excited to see that they’ve returned to the Minneapolis area… stopping by First Avenue on May 8th. Of course, being absent for so long, that the show is naturally sold out.

Expect them to play songs from their latest album Wildness (their first album in seven years!), but also some fan-favorites, such as “Run”.

That’s not all, they’re bringing We Are Scientists and Ryan McMullan on this tour. What a great lineup.

For at least this night, Prince got it wrong—

On a rainy, windswept night in St. Paul, a crowd 5,000 strong at a sold-out Roy Wilkins Auditorium didn’t party like it was 1999… they partied like it was The 1975.

The three-band-bill began with a brief set from London’s Colouring, who has a new digital single, ‘Heathen’, due on an upcoming EP (Interscope Records) as follow up to last year’s Symmetry.  Like the headliners, Glass Animals and The XX, the band led by frontman Jack Kenworthy blends lush synths with traditional instruments and has a romantic streak in terms of lyrics.  Unfortunately, due to a torrential rain/hail mix outside (akin to their song ‘The Wave’) and only one single-file, slow moving line as entrance to the venue, we could only hear their set from the outside, waiting patiently to get in. 

Next up was Manchester, UK band Pale Waves, hailing from the same hometown as The 1975, and signed to their imprint, Dirty Hit, with the band’s Matt Healy and George Daniels recruited to contribute production on their single, ‘There’s a Honey’. 

Their mix of electro-pop with jangly guitar is a similar fit as the night’s headliner and they like to also play in minimal lighting, with singer Heather Baron-Gracie looking a bit Robert Smith and sounding a bit Delores O’Riordan.

“You’re very welcoming” Gracie blushed halfway through their twenty-five minute set, happy to see fans clap a long to a band they’ve likely never heard of, prior. “I don’t know what’s going on over here” Gracie mused, looking at stage right and the throng pogo-ing with raised hands, “it’s like a dance party”, as the band finished with ‘There’s a Honey’. 

Call it a victory lap for The 1975, returning to sold-out Roy Wilkins Auditorium still in support of their second full-length I Like It When You Sleep, for You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware of It (Dirty Hit/Interscope Records), which still has the longest album name since Fiona Apple’s last one, and has ever grown in popularity, thanks to its irresistible singles and still-expanding (mostly female) fan base.

Like previously seen, a droning hum (like a sound effect from ‘Lost’) grew louder and louder to then slowed to a halt as cheers went up and lights went dark, as the band took to the stage to ‘The 1975’ intro leading into the jangly intro of ‘Love Me’.  Singer Matty Healy moved as lithe as ever, in platform shoes and a t-shirt that read ”Stop Glorifying Rats” (which can be politically interpreted a number of ways).

Visuals are always important with the band, with importance on color and lighting, and the stage was set with four vertical dividing pillars and three lit rectangular box shapes hovering above them. Most of the time, the lighting was dimmed low, with pastel blues, beige, and pinks awash over the band, sometimes television static, light-formed geometric shapes, dramatic strobing, and a cityscape. 

We’ve loved and followed the band’s local trek over the last four years, smilingly watching them graduate to bigger and bigger venues, from the Varsity Theater, to First Avenue, to the Mall of America, Myth, and now another sell-out at Roy Wilkins, with arenas likely in their future, for their next local stop on a world tour.

Like many bands playing bigger venues, its core foursome (Healy, Adam Hann on guitar, keys; Daniel on drums; and Ross MacDonald on bass, keys) expands by a couple live players, including saxophonist John Waugh. But, the impressive thing was watching them return to their roots, playing the majority of the second half of the set, just as the original four-piece.

Healy kept conversation to a minimum, “this is like a greatest hits set, this evening” Healy mused before ‘The City’, sticking mostly to album cuts and not inserting B-sides live as we’ve seen before, or their recent version of a Sade cover, done to benefit the War Child charity.

Backdrop colors turned rainbow for ‘Loving Someone’, guitarist Hann (the band’s secret musical weapon) and sax player Waugh shone on ‘She’s American’, and the crowd hushed for the ballad ‘She Lays Down’ then shrieked with joy as radio hit ‘Somebody Else’ followed.

Once again, Healy stopped to talk to the crowd before ‘Me’, saying “Let’s not live retrospectively… let’s just be people in a room, no phones, for one song”.  ‘Me’ was followed (logically) by ‘You’ and the one-two of ‘Girls’ and ‘Sex’ would wrap the main set amid a barrage of strobe lights and screams from the audience. 

The three-song encore started downtempo with the soulful, gospel-tinged ‘If I Believe You’ with nice sax work by Waugh and Healy asking in its lyrics, “If I'm lost then how can I find myself?”.   Ramping up with ‘Chocolate’, the loudest screaming and singing from the crowd, was reserved for the band’s final song, ‘The Sound’. 

Like all shows in this aging venue, the sound was boomy, the air heavy and humid, and chairs small and uncomfortable, but no one seemed to mind as The 1975 rose above all of that for ninety-minutes with The Sound- those memorable songs that have caught, and stayed in the ear of a devoted and exponentially growing fan base, which was definitely in the mood on this evening, to celebrate it.

The 1975 is back in America to promote their #1 US and UK sophomore album I like it when you sleep, for you are so beautiful yet so unaware of it (Dirty Hit / Interscope Records).

We’ve been covering the UK quartet since their US debut in October 2013 and recently covered their First Avenue show in 2015 and we can tell you that they’ve consistently sold out their Minneapolis appearance.

This year, the band upgraded their venue to St Paul’s Roy Wilkins Auditorium, which is not our favorite venue, but at least it may be big enough to accommodate all their fans.

Show up early to check out all the buzz for Colouring. The London band is touring on the strength of their debut EP Symmetry and their new single ‘The Wave’. The track is taken from their upcoming EP, due from Interscope Records in mid-2017.

The Los Angeles-based pop/hip-hop singer is back on tour now for her second album Every Where Is Some Where.

Austin’s Missio to open. The band previously opened for K.Flay on her Crush Me Tour. The duo’s breakout single ‘Middle Fingers’, which was quickly picked up on SiriusXM’s Alt Nation (where it hit the #1 spot on the influential “Alt-18 Countdown”). The song will likely be available on their debut record Loner (available May 19th).

The 1975 is a sell out—

No, not referring to the integrity of the fast-rising UK band; rather, the fact that once again (and as with every local appearance), the band had sold out their show at First Avenue’s Mainroom months in advance, making it one of the hottest tickets of the year.

Swim Deep

The evening began with a short set from Birmingham, UK foursome Swim Deep, who had their second full-length, Mothers (Chess Club/RCA), release this October.   A deep bassline and jangling guitars started their exact thirty-minutes with ‘King City’ and its lyrics “With the sun on my back it's a nice day” to begin on an optimistic note.

The set gradually gravitated into more of a space-rock/acid house feel with ‘Forever Spacemen’ and the dreamy ‘She Changes the Weather’ that had vocalist Austin "Ozzy" Williams moving in and out of a falsetto range.  Set closing ‘To My Brother’ echoed ‘90s bands The Farm, Primal Scream, and Happy Mondays with its thumping backbone and hedging guitar as singer Williams screamed to invite everyone on to their own groovy train.

With stage lights trained on the audience, an automated hum that permeated through the crowd noise since the set change, grew louder and louder to then slowed to a halt as cheers went up and lights went dark.  The stage began taking shape as members strode out and The 1975 began their ninety-minute set to the rhythmic guitar and electronic blip sounds of the funky new ‘Love Me’.

The buzzing Manchester, UK foursome has been out on a short (and very sold out) tour of the U.S., previewing tracks from its second full-length, breathily titled I Like It When You Sleep, for You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware of It (Dirty Hit/Interscope Records) which is due out Feb. 26.

Matty Healy

“Welcome to the show, Minneapolis!” singer Matty Healy shouted above the screaming, mostly younger (and female) crowd.  Watching Healy, you can’t help but be reminded of the late Michael Hutchence, with his writhing moves, floppy hair, and propensity to drink red wine and smoke on stage. And the band’s addition of saxophonist John Waugh only adds to the INXS comparisons, though it is more in spirit, than about pure imitation.

Healy and the rest of the band (Adam Hann – guitar, keyboards; George Daniel – drums; Ross MacDonald – bass guitar, keyboards) have been together in some form since 2002, so any “overnight success” is a result of a dozen previous years, honing their craft and band identity.

The group infectiously blends youth-centric themes (sometimes fun, sometimes melancholy) lyrically with indie, electro, funk and pop song structures to create something that has clearly taken hold, especially locally, in the musical zeitgeist.

Their visual presentation is as vital to the overall experience as well, with a large screen backdrop and two large tower structures on either side of drummer Daniel that also lit and continued the visuals of the back screen.  Keeping with their previous visual signature, most of the older songs had the stage in forms of black and white, sometimes as static, sometimes as blocked, lit patterns, while the new material changed the lighting to more pastel hues of blues, pinks, and beige.

The crowd swayed to Healy’s invitation of “do you wanna dance” on ‘You’, sang along to ‘Menswear’, and listened intently while dancing to the new ‘Change of Heart’ and ‘She’s American’.  For ‘Me’, Healy implored that everyone put away their cell phones, to live in moment and experience the now, instead of viewing life through a screen.

The 1975

The set hit overdrive again for the poppy ‘The Sound’, the mid-tempo ‘Robbers’ (about a toxic relationship), and the closing, poppy ‘Girls’.   An odd chant of “We want Sex” (requesting the song presumably) brought the band back for a three-song encore, starting with the contemplative ‘Medicine’, featuring Healy and drummer Daniel, from the Drive movie re-score, and with an “Los Angeles at dusk” projected backdrop.

Setlist

“You got any energy left?”, Healy implored as the beginning riffs of ‘Chocolate’ started to screaming affirmation and the audience got their wish with the closing ‘Sex’, with everyone pogo-ing in place on the floor.

From the show’s early sell out, to the stage production, and the crowd’s intense reaction to every song, it was clear right away that the band has outgrown its club confines and is destined for bigger things (something we predicted when we first saw them too).

And they get to prove just that, as a proper spring tour has already been announced, with the band returning locally to Roy Wilkins Auditorium in May, a venue more than three times the size of First Avenue’s mainroom.  Our prediction- a sell out again for one of our favorites, so grab tickets while you still can for The 1975.

One of the most successful recent alt-rock act The 1975 is returning to Minneapolis next Thursday, December 10th. Of course, as with all their previous Minneapolis appearances, the show is sold out. If you missed out on tickets... not to worry, they've already announced 2016 dates (at the Roy Wilkins Auditorium in May 2016). Get the tickets now, as it is very likely the St Paul venue will sell out quickly.

The Mixed Blood Majority's Insane World album release show is taking place this Friday, December 11th. Mixed Blood Majority is Crescent Moon (of Kill The Vultures) and Joe Horton (of No Bird Sing) and producer Lazerbeak (of Doomtree). I got a sneak peak of the album on their Bandcamp and have to say, these guys will be bringing the house down on Friday night. The new album is exactly what is to be expected from such legendary musicians and then some. The collective recently just wrapped up a tour with Doomtree.

Co-founder of Doomtree, P.O.S. (aka Stefon Alexander) and Grrrl Prty also on the bill. I have seen both acts numerous times and it's always an amazing time full of good times and great music.

Manchester's The 1975 will be returning to Minnesota for a third time at the Myth Nightclub next Saturday, November 8th. We've been lucky enough to have caught The 1975 every time they play in Minneapolis.

If you haven't bought their self-titled album, now may be the best time as a Deluxe Edition of their self-titled contain a bonus disc with all the EPs: Facedown, Sex, Music for Cars and IV.

The popular band have consistently sold out their shows, so expect a big turnout at the Myth.

From the ashes of The Honorary Title, singer Jarrod Gorbel with former Rilo Kiley lead guitarist Blake Sennett, formed Night Terrors of 1927. We previously saw Night Terrors of 1927 at 7th Street Entry in earlier this year.
