Southern California’s music festival Desert Daze is celebrating their tenth anniversary this September 30 to October 2, 2022, in Lake Perris, California. Festival weekend passes, parking and camping passes is available to purchase now. For the first time this year, Desert Daze has also partnered with FUSE to help concertgoers put together hotel packages in a variety of budgets.

We’ve been covering the festival since 2017, describing the festival as “And just like that, it was over just as quickly as it had begun. I left feeling elated and exhausted, and as I made my way back to the day parking lot, I smiled in satisfaction knowing that the soles of my boots were caked with the magical moon dust of the desert.”

The lineup is available now, and already everybody is talking about how this is headliner Iggy Pop’s only U.S. show this year. We saw Pop at Desert Daze 2017 and wrote, “Iggy Pop, 60’s The Stooges frontman and who some would call the Godfather of Punk, came out in all his shirtless glory and opened up with (I mean of course) I Wanna Be Your Dog, spitting bottled water and flipping off the crowd and cameras. He was bold and delightful in his punk charm, right into Gimme Danger and The Passenger, then more Stooges’ classics like 1969. It’s sincerely hard to believe this man is in his 70’s. He had more energy than most of the bands combined, and I felt happy that I got to see him in that setting before…I mean who even knows anymore what can happen to these legends. Somewhere somebody must have kicked Iggy around some…and he’s kicking back.”

Australian psychedelic group Tame Impala is doing some selective U.S. Summer Music Festival (having just played Coachella)… and they are headlining a couple of Surly Brewing Festival (at the Surly Brewing Co. Festival Field). Both shows have sold out.

We last saw the group at Desert Daze 2018, they only played a few songs: “Tame Impala started their set off strong with the groovy tune Nangs off of 2015’s al-bum Currents. Let it Happen was next, and from the pit I heard the eruption of “Whoa” and “Wow’s” from the crowd, and at first it seemed like it was maybe in response to the trippy background effects behind lead singer Kevin Parker. I quickly realized it was the sky illuminating with lightning bolts above us. Sure enough, halfway through Sundown Syndrome (ironic much), a producer came out and announced that they had to stop. Kevin kind of shrugged and said “I guess we gotta stop.” and they all ran off the stage.”

The palm trees were a blowin’ and the wind was dusty and warm on Friday as music lovers loaded into the Lake Perris campgrounds for Desert Daze’s seventh psychedelic wonderland of American music festivals. Founder Phil Pirrone (Leader of band JJUUJJUU) has gone above and beyond to make this entity, in whatever category you want to put it under, entirely separate from your standard music festival. Year after year, he manages to succeed and surpass expectations, galvanizing us with the joy and euphoria that this celestial event brings. It’s more than just a weekend. It’s an experience of a lifetime.

Set up this year in Lake Perris, California, on the grounds of beautiful beaches with breathtaking mountain backdrops, it was less of a desert mirage than in its past Joshua Tree days…which seemed to suit festival goers just fine. There was a rather stark contrast of ear-piercing rock music amidst this stunning scenery, but in a way, it just made sense that people were swimming on unicorn floaties while listening to the tunes of Cut Worms or Julia Holter. The installations scattered around-from teepees with hanging seashells formed into jellyfish to a space-ship treehouse on stilts-gave everyone something to marvel at in between sets or even all day, if one felt so inclined.

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 12

Certainly a favorite on Friday was Yonatan Gat and the Eastern Medicine Singers. Gat has a rather interesting story as a musician. After being banned from playing in his homeland of Israel (refusing to partake in mandatory experiences like the Israeli army), he relocated to New York and started producing music. He began recording and performing as a bandleader, and in 2014 released the Iberian Passage EP, a debut that maintained his signature raw energy while switching the focus away from the shock-performance style of Monotonix to a more improvised, shamanic musical exploration. This is what we got a taste of here, as Gat graced us with the brilliance of tracks from his latest album, Universalists.

After Yonatan’s solo set the trio of fringed moccasin men hit their drums and belted out their chants into the crowd, while everyone circled around them in amazement. Then Yonatan ran down to join them, wailing on his Guild guitar as they collaborated in what one could only call an indigenous ritual that was meant to make the heavens downpour with rain, it was so spiritual (this concept will make more sense later). The Eastern Medicine Singers are an Algonquin language, Eastern-Styled drum group dedicated to preserving the Eastern Woodlands music. Adding Yonatan’s insane guitar skills creates a sound so powerful that it transcends you into another time, another life, another dimension in a way that no drug or substance can.

This is another thing that give Desert Daze such a rare quality in the lineage of music festivals…you don’t have people that party too hard and are obviously too drunk or stoned to be in public. It’s just not like that. Sure, people are there and there are drugs and gods are golden. But people actually do dig the music and I think, overall…are pretty much only there for it. To correlate with this theme, it may indeed be 2018, but here at Desert Daze it is essentially like walking onto the set of the film Almost Famous. Bell-bottoms, rose-colored glasses and sideburns are running amuck and thankfully, Penny Lane is right there beside him, Sherpa coat and Robert Plant hair intact. But it’s not contrived, heavens no…it all seems to be conducive and genuine to each person swaying their hips and closing their eyes to the music. An idyllic sight to behold, indeed.

Australian band Pond, founded by Tame Impala’s touring members Nick Allbrook and Jay Watson started their set with 30,000 Megatons off their 2017 album The Weather. This track makes me think of David Bowie’s Space Oddity, and Nick Allbrook himself is an alien and bizarre and alive. Fascinating to watch and never skipping a beat, this band is a riot and dazzled the crowd right into basically the entirety of The Weather, and also debuted the song “Burned Out Star”. This one was a true crowd-pleaser and nice little warm-up to the anticipated Tame Impala set.

Ah, Warpaint. These girls just get better and better as the years go by. I don’t know whether they’ve turned into witches or slightly older versions of the characters of the movie Now and Then. Whichever one, all of them have more charisma, talent and style than most of us mere mortals roaming the planet. Emily Kokal’s haunting vocals soared with Jenny Lee’s harmonies and badass bass skills on The Stall, as their opening to the set. It’s crazy to think that their self-titled album came out 5 years ago, and their first full length album Exquisite Corpse almost a decade ago…but these girls certainly stay busy in and out of the studio. They rocked Keep it Healthy, Love is to Die and Krimson (my personal favorite), before ending with their hit track Elephants. “I need a little room to sway”, indeed. And don’t ever let us go.

As the sound guy was assuring us that this was just a break, the gods opened up a black hole in the sky and dumped buckets and buckets of rain onto us. Torrential downpour ensued (insert indigenous rain dance ah-ha moment here) and everyone started running to their cars to “wait it out.” This did not happen, and eventually there was an attempted evacuation of the camp…everyone was told to go home or (if camping) to get a hotel room. People, suffice to say, were pissed!

With Desert Daze 2018 coming up this weekend (October 12th-14th, 2018) at Lake Perris, California, we thought we’d spotlight some of these bands we’ve already seen.

Also, the Music Festival announced that Friday’s ticket and Camping are nearly sold out, so if you’re on the fence about attending this weekend, it’s time to pull the trigger.

Jarvis Cocker (Friday): Frontsman of Britpopster band Pulp will be at Desert Daze on Friday. If you’ve ever listened to a Pulp album, you know that Cocker’s lyrics are often like reading a mini novel. He’s a genius. Since going solo, Cocker has really expanded from just a singer in a band to something more interesting, like film actor, film maker, and writer.

Slowdive (Saturday): After years and years of inactivity, the re-formed/re-united English band did small tour in 2014 (which was one of our greatest highlight). Now, with a 2017 self-titled album, the shoegazing band will like stick around. If you’ve never seen the band, you’ll be glad to know that they were recently added to the Desert Daze lineup for co-headlining on Saturday night.

My Bloody Valentine (Sunday): Deservingly headlining Sunday evening. Let’s face it, when you talk about shoegazing music, the band that everyone is influenced by is probably My Bloody Valentine. Like Slowdive, MBV was on a long hiatus, until Kevin Shields got the band back together.

There’s still a million other bands coming to Desert Daze, so there’s a little something for everyone.

Ah, the mornings are beginning to be met by a cool autumn breeze...so this must mean desert festival season is under way! Desert Daze has been a myriad of magical atmospheric wonder along with the most entertaining of artists, and this year is no exception. With Tame Impala headlining, it could in fact be the best one yet.

I could enumerate on how this festival is, in my opinion, the Mecca of all festivals, but it is really something to be seen by the own eye to truly comprehend. Along with bizarre instillations and an entire village complete with meditation tent and tea ceremonies, this isn’t just a music festival…it’s an Extraterrestrial Festival.

The California-based festival run by Jjuujju’s guitarist Phil Pirrone has an impressive lineup this year featuring Tame Impala, My Bloody Valentine, King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard (also a returning band), Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker, Shellac, Ty Segall & White Fence, Warpaint, Earth (performing The Bees Made Honey In The Lion’s Skull), Malcom Mooney of CAN, Steve Albini, Connan Mockasin, Pond, and Julia Holter, Earthless. There are always surprise guests and DJ’s along with plenty of mind-enhancing activities to attend in between shows.

English dream-pop band Slowdive has recently been added to the festival, which will by far be one of the most sought-out performances of the weekend.

Tame Impala’s bassist Cameron Avery is currently on a solo tour to promote his debut record Ripe Dreams, Pipe Dreams (Anti- Records)... stopping by the 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis on Tuesday, March 28th.

Opening the show was Los Angeles’ one-man-band Omar Velasco. Velasco cut his teeth touring with A Fine Frenzy (who we saw a few years ago when she was touring with Velasco in her full backing band), before deciding to venture forth with his debut record Golden Child.

Songs on Velasco’s set were mostly from Golden Child, including various Spanish songs, and the title track, which required Cameron Avery to show up on stage to help sing the song. Clearly the highlight of the show.

Perth-based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Cameron Avery (sometime known and credited as Cam Avery) came on stage shortly. With the recently released Ripe Dreams, Pipe Dreams out now, the band proceeded to play (almost) every song off the record. The only exception is ‘An Ever Jarring Moment’, which was not played.

Avery and company seemed relieved to be finally standing and playing songs for us, especially after spending over 26 hours driving from Seattle to Minneapolis.

A small surprise was ‘Hey Judy’ thrown on the set. This is The Growl’s song, which is Avery’s former band. According to Avery, his current band now (Clinton Oliver, Marc Earley, Samuel Kuzich, and James Ireland) is exactly the same band as The Growl.

Avery’s songs aren’t always the most upbeat, even the singer confessing that his songs are somewhat “not the cheeriest songs”. One of the sadder songs on his set called ‘Disposable’ is about how he felt his love was disposable when he was saying goodbye to a girlfriend and she just shrugged and said, “she’s got a boyfriend anyway.”

With only one album, Avery concluded that he’s ran out of songs to play after the finale song ‘C'est Toi’. With encouragements, the crowd begging, Avery stayed on stage while the band left, and played out to a song he’s working on called ‘She Meant Everything To Me’.

He said that this was the live debut of the song, that he’s never played it in front of anyone before. Judging by the semi-unfinished ending, it was a work in progress. Still, it was a rather special to hear the new song.

Australia's Tame Impala recently started playing their epic track, "Let It Happen", taken from their forthcoming third studio album Currents.

The band will be back in Minneapolis next Wednesday; we last saw the band in 2013, which Oscar wrote, "their live show, this time around they changed up their songs a bit. I enjoyed the change, making it sound fresh but at the same time, I wish I could just hear both albums played from start to finish. Kevin and the gang looked like they were in a trance as they pummeled their respective instruments. I enjoyed that a good mix of Innerspeaker and Lonerism..."

Tame Impala showed up to First Avenue on one of their stops of their sold-out North American tour. If you recall, Jess said, “[. . .] I have a feeling they will forever receive a warm welcome from any American city they chose to hypnotize from here on out. “ Sure enough, these guys are well received by critics and fans alike. Playing all sold-out shows in the US in a matter of a couple of years. They are definitely very hyped, but they deserve it; Kevin Parker has a gift for groove. His lyrics are to the point of ambiguity at times but within the music’s context, they strike a chord deep within me and I can really relate. And that’s what really matters to me. Not how quirky or intelligent your lyrics are (Which is a plus if they are.), but how much they speak. Lyrics aside, the way he crafts a melody also resonates. It’s like he knows exactly what you’ll want to hear next.

I fell in love with Tame Impala's music when a friend of mine from Australia sent me a link to a youtube video with a few thousand hits. The song was ,“Solitude is bliss,” and I enjoyed it so much I bought Innerspeaker right away. And as soon as the opening of “It Is Not Meant to Be” hit my ears I was in another world . Now I do think he sounds like Lennon and that his music draws from his rock idols: Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Led Zepplin, and The Flaming Lips, etc. But I wouldn’t say he’s making revivalist psych. It has a modern twist; you can definitely tell that all of the songs have been tinkered with in the studio. In my humble opinion that’s the beauty of the songs. They sound magnificent on headphones and turned up to 11 on a system.

As for their live show, this time around they changed up their songs a bit. I enjoyed the change, making it sound fresh but at the same time, I wish I could just hear both albums played from start to finish. Kevin and the gang looked like they were in a trance as they pummeled their respective instruments. I enjoyed that a good mix of Innerspeaker and Lonerism were applied. They started with “Desire Be Desire Go” which I thought was a good intro to “Solitude is Bliss.” When they got to “It Is Not Meant to Be,” I lost myself completely. It reminded me of the first time I heard the record “Dopesmoker” by Sleep. Groovy, repetitive, but soothing. His set; dreamy and groovy sent me into a parallel universe where the whole freaking planet was rumbling with bass and reverb. The show really became alive when “Elephant” was played, and people were cheering loudly. I'm sure that bass line for “Elephant” was really be felt throughout the entire venue. The song itself was as loud and catchy live as I had hoped it would be. My favorite line of the song was “He pulled the mirrors off his Cadillac, ‘Cause he doesn’t like it looking like he looks back.” I just think the imagery of that song is humorous. The set thundered on, with other great singles such as “ Feels Like We Only Go Backwards,” “Alter Ego” and "Half Full Glass of Wine." The latter of which was an epic closer for their formal set. Although I will admit their encore had washed over me at that point. I believe it was “Nothing That Has Happened So Far.” Kevin put on a great show; he sounded like he was singing from atop of a mountain and his tunes truly captured the feeling and sound of dreamy space psych.

Tame Impala is touring the U.S. again in support of their album, Lonerism. Kevin and crew have definitely crafted a piece of art. Loud, incredibly groovy and hypnotizing; this record is a sure indicator that if you go see them live, you will have a good time. Their growth is evident through their album’s use of ambient sounds, samples, drum machines, synths, collaborative songwriting amongst members, and the use of Dave Fridmann’s talents. Last time they were in Minneapolis, they played at the 7th St. Entry; Mainly to a small crowd of devoted fans. I believe that this time it may be different. I expect a bigger and more diverse crowd this year since they’re playing First Avenue’s mainroom; especially because they got a lot of attention from the critics for Innerspeaker. They also ended at the top of the lists for Lonerism, receiving an 88/100 from Metacritic and at least 4 stars from most of the big critics out there. (Spin, Pitchfork, NME, etc.) There’s been a lot of talk on sites such as reddit.com about Tame Impala and I’ve heard a lot of their songs played in retail stores.

At weheartmusic we are big fans of Tame Impala. Fellow writer Jess saw them at the Fonda in L.A.. As Jess said, “I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, these guys, on the record and live, sound like you’re sitting amongst a Beatles-like Revolver studio session. Kevin’s vocals are as if he’s singing from a mountaintop, and the heavy guitars and organs make you feel like you can climb that mountain alongside him. Jay Watson shakes his impressive hair around as he keeps up the infectious rhythm on drums, and Dominic Simper is more than impressive on bass.. . . . I have a feeling they will forever receive a warm welcome from any American city they chose to hypnotize from here on out. "
