Originally booked earlier on May 12, 2022, the Spacey Jane show at the Fine Line Music Cafe, in Minneapolis, finally took place on October 19. The Australian band admittedly said they were really excited to finally get to play for us on Wednesday night.
Opening the show was Joe P (Joe Parella). If you’re not familiar with the New Jersey singer, since the 8th grade, he’s fronted a band called Deal Casino, named after the Deal Casino Bathing Pavilion after the band waited for hours at the location for the Bamboozle Music Festival in 2013.
The band broke up in 2020, and it’s clear that Joe P had no ill-will or embarrassment about his time in Deal Casino, because he still proudly performs those Deal Casino songs, such as “Baby Teeth” and “Color TV”, on his set.
Joe P seemed really shy and self-loathing as first, as he mentioned how he didn’t expect anyone to know who he was… but after hearing some disputing cheers and feedback, he smiled and still continued to introduce his songs and little stories that inspired them.
He ended his 45-min set with his solo signature song, “Off My Mind”. The song, as of this writing, has nearly 20 million streams on Spotify.
Space Jane, featuring vocalist and guitarist Caleb Harper, bassist Peppa Lane, guitarist Ashton Hardman-Le Cornu and drummer and manager Kieran Lama, is from Fremantle, Australia (also the home of one of our favorite Australian band San Cisco).
The band first came to fame for their debut album Sunlight in June 2020. The album is certified Gold, after it debut at #2 on the ARIA album chart and was voted Album of the Year on Triple J’s Listener’s Poll and J Award (Australian Broadcasting Corporation).
Since the record came out during the pandemic, the band actually could not tour to promote the record. Fast-forward to 2022, and after the band released their sophomore album Here Comes Everybody, the band is finally on tour to promote both records.
As you can see from the setlist, the band mostly stuck to the debut album, throwing in a few songs from their second album.
Of course, they saved their biggest hit singles for the encore, starting with “Lots of Nothing” (which landed #3 on Triple J’s hottest 100), and “Booster Seat” (which landed #2 on Triple J’s hottest 100, with Glass Animals being in the #1 spot). The last song was a megahit for the band, with over 50 million streams on Spotify alone.
