I don’t need to tell you that it’s all been downhill since Microsoft bought Skype. Unfortunately, I’ve been using Skype for a long, long time with annual subscription, so I couldn’t just leave.
I’ve been putting off on upgrade to the new version of Skype because I don’t like the new interface (and the fact that my old Call Graph software did not work), but over the weekend, Microsoft forced me to upgrade. None of its previous version will work, unless you upgrade to its latest version 7.38. Unfortunately, the skype.com website download does not work. I did find a workaround and alternate link: Skype Silent Installer.
The Silent Installer was great, there’s no interface, it just install and update in the background, but still, the new Skype desktop sucks (it’s too big with no options to make it smaller). The only redeeming quality is that the desktop version doesn’t suck as much as the iOS and Android version. Most Skype users rated the app 1 star. I agree, the design is just ugly and awful.
Anyway, since Call Graph doesn’t work with the new Skype, I’ve been forced to seek another alternative. I’m currently using the free version of MP3 Skype Recorder at mp3skyperecorder.com. It’s free, but there is a popup advertisement after you make a recording. It’s not that annoying, I can live the with ads. The upgrade price isn’t that bad, it’s about $12 USD.
I’ve already tested the MP3 Skype Recorder software with the recent Jon Stewart (from Sleeper) interview, works like a charm.
I also recently purchased a Yeti Blue Microphone, it was on sale, but even at the sale of $100, it’s not a cheap microphone.
For the price, you get some of the nice options, like the four recording styles: Stereo (left and right), Cardioid (front facing recording), Omni (all directions), and Bi-directional (for two people sharing the microphone on opposite ends). You also get the ability to mute the mic, “noise grain”, and headphone volume controls.
