One of my favorite electroclash band Ladytron is releasing a Christmas song called “All Over By Xmas” on Friday, December 1st, 2023, on Cooking Vinyl.

I’ve gotten a chance to listen to it, at first it kind of has that T.Rex’s “Christmas Bop” vibe, but leaning a little more electronic.

You know me, I do love Ladytron, but not sure if I like this song. It’s a little repetitive with its “all over by Christmas” lyric that starts every line of the song.

Example of lyrics:

Yes it will be all over, all over by Christmas you told me.
All over, all over, it won't be our last Christmas.
All over by Christmas, this December is where we shall meet.
All over by Christmas, over our town, all over our street.

P.S. Ladytron toured the USA in November 2023 (their first since 2020 and without Reuben Wu), but unfortunately the limited dates did not extend to Minneapolis. Their next date is at Manchester on 26 January 2024. Hope to see them soon.

Acclaimed LA-based singer-songwriter Katelyn Tarver is on her “Compliments Only” tour… according to Tarver, her first “real” tour (as headliner). We mentioned that she previously toured with other groups, such as Johnnyswim in 2021.

Rosie Darling was originally listed as support act, but unfortunately was not feeling well on this Saturday night. At the eleventh hour, Julia Eubanks of Creeping Charlie stepped in to open the show.

Creeping Charlie (30 Dec 2022)

We last saw Creeping Charlie in Dec 2022 and wrote, “Creeping Charlie takes its inspiration from bands like Mazzy Star and Built to Spill but you could hear Veruca Salt and other female alternative rock bands of the 90’s in the guitar driven and heavy bass playing underneath Julia’s airy lyrics unless she was screaming into the microphone with songs like “Gtfo”. Like the plant Creeping Charlie has a lot of energy and curiosity and desire to expand their musical sound. They can be seen again on January 20th, 2023 at the main room of First Ave in a show billed: Best new bands of 2022. Definitely worth a visit!”

While they were loud and screaming with a full band, Julia, by herself, seemed almost shy… especially asking the audience to help her sing out “It Doesn’t Hurt Like That Anymore”.

When re-tuning her guitar for the “loud” song “Paperdoll”, Julia, trying to come up with some banter, mentioned how she saw Leith Ross in June 2023 and admired how they dealt with vamping for time. According to Julia, Ross would solicit questions written on paper in a box, and would answer those questions while tuning their guitars. “They’re so smart, I’m not!,” she concluded.

Katelyn Tarver is on her first headlining “Compliments Only” tour. She had a lot of fun digging through her EP and old songs, and her forthcoming sophomore 2024 album, to put together her setlist. Even though it’s her first major tour, she seemed like an old pro at this. And even if things aren’t exactly going according to plan, Tarver is having fun.

In the middle of her set, she decided to do a mini-solo set (meaning her drummer and guitarist would take a nice 20-min break backstage). Starting with her quiet piano-driven song “Sh** Happens”, followed by “Love Alone”, and a cover of Paramore’s “The Only Exception”, and ending with “Love Me Again”.

Look for Tarver to support Jack Gray on the UK tour in November.

English art rock and post-rock band Black Country, New Road (or shortened BCNR) are currently touring the USA… stopping by First Avenue on September 11th. The venue was an upgrade, having sold out the Fine Line originally.

We previously wrote about the band in July 2021 when they were touring the UK in support of their debut album For the First Time (the record was nominated for the Mercury Prize).

The large band features Tyler Hyde (vocals, bass), Lewis Evans (vocals, flute, saxophone), Georgia Ellery (violin, backing vocals), May Kershaw (vocals, keys), Charlie Wayne (drums, backing vocals), and Luke Mark (guitars).

Daneshevskaya (pronounced Dawn-eh-shev-sky-uh) will open the show.

UK’s Yard Act is on their debut headlining US tour, and the first stop is at the Fine Line Music Café in Minneapolis, this September 13.

This is one of the hottest UK band at the moment, with praises for their album The Overload by The Guardian, the Sunday Times, NME, Uncut, and many others.

Chicago’s Stuck to open. The band is fronted by former Yeesh and Clearance member Greg Obis. Stuck recently released their new LP Freak Frequency via Born Yesterday.

Britpop fans, I’m happy to see that Kula Shaker will be headlining the Amsterdam Bar & Hall on September 14, 2023. Fans who grew up in the 90s will remember their Indian-influenced “Govinda” and cover song Billy Joe Royal’s “Hush” (made famous by Deep Purple).

Kula Shaker’s debut album K landed #1 in the UK charts, so they were a big deal back in 1996.

We saw Bully in Jan 2018 and said, “Bully is a female-fronted indie rock band who, when playing live, comes off more as a punk band. I was wondering why this show was so packed (it had to have been damn near sold out if it didn't sell out!) but then I found out that Alicia Bognanno, the front-woman, is actually from Rosemount, MN even though the band claims to be from Nashville. This band only has one full length out (Feels Like which was released just last year) but I noticed their name popping up on everyone's "best of 2015" lists. Last night proved why these guys are on fire right now.”

Louisville Kentucky based trio Wombo to open, fresh off a support tour of the UK, which included Moth Club, Great Escape Festival, and Dot to Dot festivals, etc. The group recently released their EP Slab in June 2023 via Fire Talk Records.

British trance producer and DJ Gareth Emery’s Laserface: Halloween show just took place last Saturday, October 26th, at the Armory in Minneapolis. This is the last Laserface show for the year.

When we first saw a show at the re-opened Armory in Feb 2018 (as part of the Super Bowl celebration), we were rather impressed by its impressive 8,400 capacity venue… which is perfect place to host the special Laserface show.

Opening up the event was SIMshows contest winner Dylan Bernhardt, who produced a special 30-min playlist exclusively for Laserface. You can listen to his winning set via Soundcloud, and hear how he medleys in songs like “If You Were” (Danny Howard ft. Eli & Fur) with “Marisa” (Yotto).

Next up was local DJ group Euphoric Nation. This was the trance project from Don Ortega, but over time, he enlisted Justin Zanish, to help produce some memorable electronic mixes, such as “Edge of Tomorrow” and set closer “Sonic”. Check out their full setlist at Soundcloud.

Occasionally, Loch Stimpson, from Dimibo, would pop in and out to setup or help them out with their set. He would take over spinning right on the 10 O’Clock hour and kept the music pumping nonstop for the next hour.

Normally, Seattle’s Dimibo is a DJ duo, featuring Filip Pankovcin and Loch Stimpson, but as you can see in these photos, only Loch can be seen center stage. Either Filip was doing stuff behind the scenes, or he was just absent from this Halloween show.

There was a brief pause as they set up the stage for Austin-based Tritonal. The last time we heard about this Astrawerks group was when they were celebrating their 10-year anniversary of Tritonal’s Enhanced Music imprint in 2018 (read all about it here). The duo (Chad Cisneros and David Reed) had massive Spotify hits (over 200 million streams), across top tracks like “Hung Up” and “Until You Were Gone” (with The Chainsmokers).

Not happy with just playing their hits, the two insists on playing new collaborations, such as “Never Be the Same”, featuring Rosie Darling. They also played quite a few new 2019 tunes, taken from their third studio album U & Me (Enhanced Music).

Closing out the show at exactly midnight was Gareth Emery, the mastermind behind Laserface: Halloween. What made this show great is the amazing lasers light show from show designer Anthony Garcia, via Nice Lasers.

We’ve seen a few laser shows, and we’ve heard the equipment and setup can cost up to a million dollars, so it’s quite rare to see these laser shows used at a concert or DJ show.

While the set may be slightly different, I do recognize many of these songs, including Dirty Vegas’ “Days Goes By”, on his Ibiza 2019 set (on YouTube). So, if you were interested in hearing what the show sounded like, the two-hour mix can be found online and features some original and some re-mixes of older songs.

Emery recently released his third “Laserface” single, called “Laserface 03 (Leaving You)”, which follows “Laserface 01 (Aperture)” and “Laserface 02 (Thoughts In Pieces)”.
