He has released a few solo albums that are amazing. There is this awesome .… Wand Again, Los Angeles' Wand is not to be confused with Canadian band Wand (who was forced to change their name) or Denmark's The Wands or Japan's Wands. They also suffer from same-name/similar-sounding ....

Man, the last time I saw Ty Segall, we were on a boat and Redd Kross’ Steve Mcdonald was on bass! There was maybe about 100 people on the small boat, and it was pretty rad. You can read all about it here: NXNE 2011 (Saturday).

Segall’s eight studio album Emotional Mugger came out this year via Drag City Records, and, of course, is on tour to promote the new album. Apparently his new live band will be called The Muggers, featuring: bassist Mikal Cronin, guitarist Kyle Thomas, guitarist Emmett Kelly, and keys Cory Hanson (Wand) and drummer Evan Burrows. Segall will play the part of “Sloppo”, a grown man wearing a baby mask.

Los Angeles’ Feels (not to be confused with Portland’s Feels, synth-trio The Feels, or New York’s The Feels, or Poland’s Feel, or London’s The Feeling) is also on the bill ... which, incidentally, they were in the news recently for an awful reason. A Feels fan got stabbed to death during a Feels-headlined show at the Underground DTSA (on Thursday, March 3rd).

The band, of course is devastated by the news and wrote:

We watched as the fight broke out, crashing onto the stage knocking mics over while the second band played, saw fists flying and more and more people dog piling on to try to break it up but still had no idea... then there was blood on the floor, cops and paramedics, the whole show was shut down of course, but still when we left we were under the impression that he was stabbed in the shoulder and was going to be fine.

Waking up this morning and finding out that he died in the hospital... There are no words. We are sending all of our love to the spirit of Nathan, his friends and family. We seriously hope that the murderer is captured and prosecuted to the fullest.

Local queer punk core Royal Brat to open the show (the band features Clara Salyer, from Babes in Toyland, Prissy Clerks and Whatever Forever). The new-ish band promised to showcase some new songs for this show.

Chicago’s Tortoise has been making music since 1990, and some critics have said that the band is behind the development of the post-rock movement (others have argued that Tortoise is only influenced by progressive rock that preceded them). Still, it’s hard to ignore that in their 26 years, that the band definitely has made an impact on experimental, post-rock, and progressive music. Since many of their shows are part improvisation, familiar songs may sound completely different than whatever they previously recorded.

Tortoise’s seven studio album The Catastrophist is out now on Thrill Jockey.

Opening up for Tortoise will be Chicago’s Mind Over Mirrors (aka Jaime Fennelly) and local Dosh.

Oneohtrix Point Never (a.k.a Daniel Lopatin) will be continuing his tour, following the release of Garden of Delete on November 2015 via Warp Records.... and the tour starts this Wednesday at the Triple Rock Social Club in Minneapolis. We saw him in 2013, and wrote that he was “ambient minimalist.”

The Triple Rock Social Club show is one of the great Red Bull Sound Select shows, which we have previously attended in the past. They are basically awarding you for RSVP (with will cost $3). For lazy people it will cost you $12 at the door. So it’s highly recommended that you RSVP now. Bonus: You get a Red Bull with purchase, so that $3 is basically you buying a Red Bull. Highly recommended if you were on the fence about going.

The problem with the name “Joseph” is that it is too common. For example, there is a British DJ billing himself simply as Joseph, etc. The American (Portland, Oregon) Joseph band is actually three sisters: Natalie, Allison, and Meegan. They’re named after their grandfather.

We previously caught the sisters in 2014, and wrote, “They harmonize as only very close family members can achieve.... I got the impression that the sisters were very fun to be around.”

Call it a good sign of Summer.

The formerly reclusive R&B crooner, Maxwell is back on the road, with his first tour in four years.  He was last seen on the road in 2009, touring for BLACKsummers’night (Columbia Records), the first in what was promised to be a trilogy of albums; the remaining two are yet to be released, though hopefully this is a good sign of more to come.

The Summer Solstice Tour is set for 37 cities through mid-August, with a weekend stop in downtown Minneapolis at the State Theatre.  Fingers are crossed that the smooth songster will be previewing new material from his next release, as well as expect the classics that have had women swooning for the last fifteen years.

Tegan and Sara are back with their "Let's Make Things Physical Tour."

The last time we saw the Quin sisters at First Avenue last year, they played practically every song from their latest album Heartthrobs. I'm assuming with this current tour, that the duo will likely dip in to their older catalog for some fan favorite songs.

Speaking of non-physical, digital copies of their Heartthrob Magazine are available now as a free download via iTunes.

Opening up the show will be Vancouver's The Courtneys, touring in support of their debut self-titled LP and Brooklyn's My Midnight Heart (singer and songwriter Angélica Allen).

The program was designed to expand the world of classical music through unique presentation formats. … How appropriate it was that Saturday night’s concert at the McGuire Theater in the Walker Art Center was co-presented with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra’s Liquid Music Series, as “liquid music” was one of the most apt definitions of the soundscapes emanating from electronic artists, Tim Hecker and Oneohtrix Point Never. The SPCO’s Liquid Music Series, now in its second season, has a mission statement to “expand the world of classical music through innovative new projects, boundary-defying artists, and unique presentation formats”, and that’s exactly what it did during the two artists’ 45 min. each, separate performances. For the early show, Hecker went on first followed by Oneohtrix Point Never and for the late show (that we attended) the order was reversed, which turned out to be very suitable, given the late show time. Oneohtrix Point Never (aka Daniel Lopatin) is a Brooklyn-based ambient minimalist who was joined on stage by visual artist Nate Boyce, supplementing the audio with his CGI animation works, originally shown in the Museum of Modern Art in 2011. The images were of forms, shapes and text; both everyday and unknown, rotating, melting, and morphing into others, while Lopatin manipulated “found sounds” and staccato samples concocted into a merged palette that was both simultaneously cold and pristine, and warm and familiar. Boyce, in dark clothing, planted on the left of the stage, with the dimmed light of his laptop screen the only thing making his profile evident as he kept one eye on the big screen. Lopatin was surrounded by machinery on the right also in near darkness, with only a single light near his controls and small random red bulbs glowing from his equipment. Promoting his latest, R Plus Seven (on Warp Records), Lopatin’s style was the more accessible of the two; chilled and at times symphonic and chamber-like, similar to Autechre, or some of Daft Punk’s soundtrack for Tron: Legacy. Following a short break, Tim Hecker’s show was prefaced by a hazy rolling fog introduced into the entire room, courtesy of the smoke machines on stage. Hecker’s set left all the visuals to one’s imagination as he played center stage in complete darkness—so much so, I wondered how he could even see the knobs on his own equipment. Based in Montreal, Hecker leaned heavily on his latest, Virgins (on Kranky) with layered, immersive static sounds of foreboding that sounded more metropolitan in nature (i.e. the bustle of hurried lives in the city), echoing and slowly building into a church sounding apocalyptic denouement. Both seemed purposely vague as to the exact interpretations of their works, but that is also part of what successful art accomplishes—the ability to seed a thought or an idea with visuals, sounds, or another medium, to prompt a response or an emotion as a result. the most quiet and respectful crowd I’ve been a part of… maybe ever The crowd for the late show, mostly younger art/music indie-types and older Walker regulars, was the most quiet and respectful crowd I’ve been a part of… maybe ever – in complete silence for both acts and reverent of the work being presented to them (oh, where were you for the recent Mazzy Star and James Blake shows?!). This was not only most appreciated by everyone, but left no errant distractions and put the focus solely on the performances, which is how more shows should be.
