We saw Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats in Sep 2015 and wrote, “Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats were the headliners of the night. They are out on tour promoting their newest release The Night Creeper which was released earlier this month on Rise Above Records. Uncle Acid's sound is unlike anything I've ever heard before. They are a rock/metal/stoner rock band from the UK which a huge following considering they have only been releasing music for about five years at this point. Not only did they tour as opening support for Black Sabbath on sixteen dates of their reunion tour in Europe, last year when they toured in the U.S. they sold out 13 of the 15 shows.”

Joy Oladokun is headlining First Avenue on January 16, 2025, in support of the new album Observations From a Crowded Room (Amigo Records/Verve Forecast/Republic Records).

Joy Oladokun has partnered with PLUS1 so that $1 from every ticket sold will go to The Ally Coalition’s work to support homeless and at-risk LGBTQ youth.

We saw Joy Oladokun in Aug 2024 and wrote, “The evening began with the pleasant surprise of a support set from Nashville via Arizona folk/pop/roots singer-songwriter Joy Oladokun, still in support of full-length, Living Proof (out via Verve/Forecast/Republic). (If we read the poster closer, we’d have known that Canadian Allison Russell was only opening the first set of dates of the tour). We’d seen the singer headline last year at The Truman in Kansas City so were familiar, and the thirty-five-minute performance began with Oladokun demurely introducing herself and the band by saying, “Hi, I’m Joy. These are my friends- they’re very weird and we’re going to play some songs together” before launching into “Taking Things for Granted”, a song we knew from previous, was about a childhood birthday experience.”

We saw Lutalo in Oct 2023 and said, “Opening the show was Vermont-based singer/producer Lutalo (not to be confused with Ugandan musician David Lutalo). He was last seen opening for Claud in September 2023 and seemed to be a fairly active singer. You find out that he was born and raised in Minnesota, so being back in St Paul, felt like being home. He played “PLPH” early on… which stands for Pretty Little Painted House … what is the painted house? It’s in reference to the White House. He ended his set with his most popular song, “Bad Man.””

We saw Myles Kennedy in Oct 2015 and said, “As for Slash, since the breakup/hiatus of the supergroup Velvet Revolver in 2008, he's released three solo albums, Slash (2010), Apocalyptic Love (2012), and the latest World on Fire (2014). The latter album was recorded with singer/guitarist Myles Kennedy of Alter Bridge, and the rhythm section named The Conspirators (Brent Fitz and Todd Kerns). NOTE: Kerns, demonstrated that he is actually a great singer, in addition to providing the bass, as he took over lead vocals for "Doctor Alibi" and "Welcome to the Jungle" midway into their set. The current US tour is actually an extension of their "World on Fire" tour, and talking to everyone at Mill City Nights, this was perhaps one of the smallest venues we would ever see Slash... and was no surprise that the show sold out in a matter of minutes.”

I have often mistaken Minnesota’s New Primitives as associated with The Primitives (famous for their “Crash” song).

We saw Farewell Milwaukee in Mar 2009 and wrote, “I like to begin reviews with a clever anecdote to draw in my readers. It’s fun for everyone, but especially fun for me because I consistently amuse myself. When Farewell Milwaukee played the Fine Line, I knew singer Ben Lubeck looked really familiar; not in the sense that I had stalked him on Facebook or met him IRL (In Real Life) or even that I’d seen the band perform before (I had). The reason why he looked familiar is because he is Shaggy from Scooby-Doo. I kid you not, readers; Ben Lubeck is tall, lanky, shaggy-haired Shags. The resemblance is uncanny, although I sincerely hope that he doesn’t take offense by this comment (I don’t know why he would since Shaggy drove an amazing green van AND solved mind-boggling mysteries).”

We saw Ber in Aug 2024 and wrote, “Highlight of her set was her cover of Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used to Know.” The original song was somewhat of a duet, the boy parts sung by Goyte, while the girl part was by Kimbra. The first part of the song, you only hear the perspective of Goyte… it isn’t until Kimbra comes in, do you hear the story from her perspective. It’s really a sad and emotional song, and was faithfully covered by Ber… except she sings both parts.”

We saw Big Head Todd at the Palace Theatre in Jan 2018 and said, “Todd Park Mohr and band (Brian Nevin– drums; Rob Squires– bass; Jeremy Lawton– keys / pedal steel) have been a band for thirty-two years now and made their new album, New World Arisin’ (on the band’s own Big Records) “to show we still could” and Big Head Todd and the Monsters still showed their formidable live chops with a two-hour set of the band’s own unique blend of Colorado rock, blues, and soul. In front of a trippingly-illustrated backdrop and amongst simple but effective lighting, the foursome took to the stage beginning with a cut from one of Mohr’s biggest guitar heroes, Jimi Hendrix. BHTM mostly let the music do the talking, eager not only to play songs from the new album, but also to work in as many crowd favorites in, as possible too.”

We saw CHVRCHES in Oct 2018 and wrote, “As for Chvrches their indiepop/dance/synthpop sound is more popular than ever, as evident by their ability to sell out their shows every time they play in Minnesota. Martin Doherty summed it up on stage, “It’s nice to be back. Time and time again, you keep selling out every time we come here. Thank you for that.” It’s been three years since their last album, Every Open Eye, so with the third album, Lauren Mayberry said that they wanted to take their time with Love is Dead. We saw Toro y Moi in Feb 2013 and wrote, “Toro y Moi. Audrey reported that the show at the Fine Line Music Café on February 20th was sold out. Not a whole lot of interaction with the audience, but lighting was fantastic. Certainly the audience didn't care as they danced away.”

Panda Bear at First Ave (29 April 2018)

We saw Panda Bear in April 2018 and wrote, “In contrast, Panda Bear (Noah Lennox) had three screens, giving us a little distractions and visual entertainment while he plays his songs. You can tell from the performance and how comfortable he was on stage, that he’s been doing this live setup for a while now. Already with five solo albums and a recent new EP A Day With The Homies (the first Panda Bear release since 2015’s Crosswords EP), Panda Bear had plenty of back catalog songs to play and didn’t have to rely on any Animal Collective songs.”

Nourished By Time to open. They were last seen in town in January 2023 with South London’s Dry Cleaning at the Fine Line.

Watching the dance routines of the group, I got the impression that not only are they inspired by Pop and R&B harmonies, but they took a few notes from popular K-Pop bands. I just assumed that all the girls were named Michelle… but that’s not the case, the four girls are Sofia D’Angelo, Layla Ku, Emma Lee, and Jamee Lockard. The two guys, Julian Kaufman and Charlie Kilgore, handled the music. They ended their set with “The Bottom”.”

We saw their tour in Aug 2015 and wrote, “Having previously teamed up on tour, Tim Heidecker and Neil Hamburger are back at it again, stopping by a sold out comedy show at the Cedar Cultural Center in Minneapolis last night. In typical Neil Hamburger style, the drunken, badly done hair comb over, safety pinned suit, Hamburger came on stage gripping three drinks, wheezing and coughing.”

We saw And the Kids in April 2018 and wrote, ““I have to do some yoga first” guitarist/vocalist Mohan said after a brief set change and entrance of her band And the Kids, and the crowd wasn’t sure if this was part of the show, or just some needed stretching, but it turned out to be the latter as Mohan mentioned recent headaches from frequent couch sleeping. We caught Black Midi (stylized as black midi) one year ago, in Oct 2021, and described them as “They’re more art-rock/experimental rock. The sound reminds me a little bit of Clinic. We saw LeBlanc in Feb 2024 and wrote, “Turn out for Dylan LeBlanc at Turf Club was terrific. A lot of young couples, and country folk music fans in the audience. According to fans, this was LeBlanc’s first tour in five years. His last show was in 2019 (also at the Turf Club), because his 2020 show (also at the Turf Club) was cancelled due to COVID restrictions. So, it’s been a longtime coming to his fans. The American singer-songwriter and guitarist’s latest album Coyote is a semi-autobiographical and a concept album. The record tells the story of Coyote, a man on the run and living a dangerous life. The man find himself in the middle of a criminal underworld of Mexico and struggles to find a way out of this treacherous lifestyle.”

Minnesota’s Great Northern announced their 2025 festival lineup recently.

Great Northern at 7th Street (17 Nov 2007)

Their name actually reminded me of the band Great Northern, who I saw in Nov 2007: “… I hadn't heard of them at the time, but was impressed with their dreamy vocals over shoegazey melodies. I even went so far as to produce this drawing of them. The drawing capture (now former) bassist Ashley Dzerigian and singer Rachel Stolte talking about deer and their love of nature (note: horse shirt and crow on the keyboard).”

It would be cool if they could get Great Northern to headline a Great Northern Festival.

Anyway, the Great Northern Festival will run January 23 to February 2, 2025, and will take place at various venues in Minneapolis and St Paul. Most of the events are free, please check their website for additional information.

Sung in English and Wolastoqey, the language of the Wolastoqiyik people, Dutcher’s sophomore album Motewolonuwok blends neoclassical, jazz, and pop influences to deliver a moving and powerful performance.

Dutcher’s debut album, Wolastoqiyik Lintuwakonawa, was awarded some of Canada’s most prestigious music awards, including the Polaris Music Prize and the Juno Award. Don’t miss your chance to see the performer NPR referred to as “the newest light in Canada’s Indigenous resistance.”

Join us for two days full of talks, live podcasts, and community workshops. Local radio station The Current is celebrating their 20th Anniversary on air. They’re asking to celebrate with them with Frank Black (singer and songwriter of The Pixies) to celebrate his 30th Anniversary of Teenager of the Year, at First Avenue, on January 24, 2025.

In addition to playing the entire album, start to finish, Black has also re-issued the album on limited edition Double Gold Vinyl, via 4AD, which you can pick up at this upcoming concert.

We saw Pixies in June 2024 and said, “Boston’s Pixies have been going strong since their fabled 2004 reunion tour (which started in MN) and singer Frank Black (aka Black Francis) announcing his solo career was over a decade ago and going through a handful of bassists following Kim Deal’s departure in 2013. A Perfect Circle’s Paz Lechantin had been holding the position for the decade (and recording three studio albums) but she and fans were surprised earlier this spring, when news broke of her term ending.”

We saw she’s green in Sep 2023: “Local shoegazing band she’s green, featuring Zofia on vocals, Teddy on bass, Liam on guitars, Raines on guitars, and Kevin on drums, opened the show. Although, according to Zofia, the group is from the area, but it was their first time playing the Turf Club. We’ve previously mentioned their Minneapolis shows, such as in August 2023 or January 2022 … but never mentioned they’ve played St Paul. The group is still relatively new, so they’re introducing some new songs, such as “Clobber”. At least that’s the title they currently agreed on.”

We saw The Vaccines in March 2024 and said, “The band proceeded to deliver a charismatically rocking set. Formed in 2010, The Vaccines rode their own wave of accolades in the UK and somewhat in the U.S., with fans like Debbie Harry attending their shows. Songs like the moody, tongue-in-cheek “Post Break-Up Sex” and the boppier “Teenage Icon” have both singalong and caustic qualities, creating a kind of cultural bridge from ‘90s Britpop to the post-9/11 indie rock chaos that swept the musical landscape. With Young’s deep, bass-y vocals anchoring guitar hooks and pop licks, he carries just enough swagger to exhort and inspire. “All My Friends Are Falling in Love,” a single from 2018 (the band just released their most recent album last year), still slaps like an early aughts rock ode written by a long-lived, once-hopeful teenager in love. Oh, the spangly, spiky bloom of the jaded indie rockstar.”

Vermont’s post-punk band THUS LOVE to open. The band made it on Rolling Stones’ Artist You Need To Know for the most exciting rock album of 2024.

We saw the band in Jun 2022 and said, “Vermont’s trio Thus Love was next on the lineup. The trio (Echo Mars, Lu Racine, and Nathaniel van Osdol) formed in 2018. They’re working on their debut album, but already released a few Demo albums. Watching the band’s high energy performance and post-punk music style… it’s hard to believe that they took inspirations from van Osdol’s jazz collection.”

We recently saw Parr with Trampled By Turtles at the Armory in Nov 2022 and wrote, “Charlie Parr opened up with his weathered steel guitar and friend, Mick, playing what Parr called: “The washing machine.” Even with no band Parr had no trouble filling the cavernous space of the Armory with an earthy voice that rose to all three levels and into the rafters of the venue. Born in Austin, MN and now residing in Duluth, Parr’s musical style of folk and blues seems to be from another era. Still, he instantly connected with the sold out crowd with a generous set of 12 songs ranging from a career that has produced 16 albums…”
