Singer/songwriter Marié Digby recently released her Christmas song ‘Venice Beach Christmas’ on iTunes and other streaming outlets (read: Spotify).

Unlike the typical Christmas song, featuring snow and cold weather... Digby’s song is all about feeling breezy and beachy.

We saw Digby with Meiko in March 2016 and wrote how she first came to fame with her viral cover of Rihanna’s ‘Umbrella’ song.

Officially, I’m out of winter hibernation ... and thanks to SXSW in Austin, Texas, we got a lot of bands booking Midwest tours. March and April are generally our favorite time of the year.

So, looking back at our 24 shows we covered:

Best Billing goes to the Meiko and Marie Digby at Cedar (03/14). Billed as “The Hapa Tour”, the concept behind this is that they are both Asian mixed.

Canadian Award goes to the Basia Bulat at Cedar Cultural Center (03/08). Like Basia Bulat’s previous appearance, she was quite happy and positively glowing.

Buzz Award goes to the Foxing at Triple Rock (03/04). Loads of young fans helped build up a massive Foxing fanbase in Minneapolis.

Most Entertaining Award goes to the Ty Segall at First Ave (03/09). Segall has been around for ages, but keeping it fresh, he re-invented himself as a giant man-baby. Very interesting...

Local Artist Award goes to Soul Asylum at Electric Fetus (03/25). The local band has been around for ages, but it’s always good to see them perform.

Best Dressed Award goes to Lucius at First Ave (03/23). They have capes!

Non Music Award goes to Daniel Clowes at Magers & Quinn (03/31).

The Hapa Tour, featuring Meiko and Marié Digby, stopped by Minneapolis at the Cedar Cultural Center on March 14th.

The term ‘hapa’, short for ‘hapa haole’, is taken from a Hawaiian Pidgin word that meaning “half foreign”. When applied to people, it means mixed descent, particularly of half or part Asian or Pacific Islander. Both Meiko and Marié are hapas, and as mentioned on stage, have always wanted to do a tour together with that theme in mind.

Local ‘hapa’ Daniel Sun opened up the show. His 30-min set included all original songs, which he was more than happy to share because we got the impression (from his comments on stage) that he normally only plays cover songs.

As of this writing, Sun has not put any of his songs online for streaming (at least we couldn’t find them), but he really wanted to pressed some CDs for the audience... but the timing didn’t quite work out.

A couple of highlights from his set included a New York University commissioned song, “Good Enough”, and his set closer “Working For The Family”, complete with vocal foley trumpets.

Marié Digby

Marié Digby said that it’s been eight years since she played in Minneapolis, referring to her Varsity Theater headlining show on 20 May 2008. According to the internet, the last time Digby was in the area, was actually with Kelly Clarkson at Canterbury Park on 18 July 2010 (and previously with Rudresh Mahanthappa at University of Minnesota on 10 April 2010). Maybe it didn’t count or wasn’t as memorable, as she was only the opener. And technically Shakopee (Canterbury Park) is a bit of a drive from the Twin Cities.

The first thing she wanted us to know that she was in love with the Mall of America, having spent the day there. She couldn’t believe we had this amazing thing... and if she lived here, she would go there every day. That may be her Japanese side speaking (the tourist part), but when she’s normally drinking Scotch whisky (although, last Monday she was drinking tea)... that would probably be her Irish side.

Marié Digby’s Setlist

Digby started her very ‘animated’ 45-min set with an Alison Krauss cover song “When You Say Nothing at All”, followed by “Stupid For You” (a popular single from her debut album Unfold).

She switched over to the house piano for “Kings and Queens”, a newer song from her Chimera EP from 2014. She said that the song was inspired by her time spent in Manila, Philippines. That song was followed by another new song, “Jet Streams”, which was one of her latest songs (available as a free download last December 2015).

Of course, the Rihanna cover (“Umbrella”) was played midway into her set. She encouraged everyone in the audience to help her sing the song.

She decided to do two piano songs back to back (“What Would I Do” and “Spell”), before going back to guitar for her finale, “Say It Again”, her single that was used in both ER and Smallville in 2008.

We’ve been watching over Meiko since her appearance at Hotel Café Music Festival in 2007. From seeing her a few times (SXSW 2009, 7th Street Entry in 2012, and Loring Pasta Bar in 2014), she had always spoke fondly of her time spent working at the Hotel Café. Last Monday, she told us that she was the café’s fill-in favorite when it came to musicians running late or last-minute cancelations, etc. After one of her unexpected performances, a Hollywood woman approached Meiko to ask for permission to use one of her song on Grey's Anatomy. She said, literally overnight, her song “Reasons to Love You” went from 500 to 5 million plays. She decided to put in her two weeks’ notice and went on tour in September 2007 with Brett Dennen (quickly followed as Mat Kearney’s opener).

As we mentioned in our reaction podcast, she left her major label Concord Music Group, in favor of releasing her next album exclusively on PledgeMusic. The new album was recorded in Nashville (where she’s currently living) with producer Joshua Grange. She previewed two songs from the upcoming album, including “Big City” (about long distance relationships) and working title “I Can't Help It” (about her time spent working at an Indian restaurant). For the latter song, she was asking for fans to submit song title ideas to her, one of her ‘punnier’ song titles that was suggested to her, from a previous show, was “Curry Me Away”, which got a loud laugh.

Before ending her 45-min set with “Boys With Girlfriends”, she wanted to thank local station Cities97. As we previously mentioned, she said that “Boys With Girlfriends” was that song the radio station put on rotation and ultimately built up an audience for Meiko in the Twin Cities. As noted earlier, DJ Min Lee was spotted in the audience (and incidentally instagrammed the show).

Overall, it was a very good billing if you love hearing storytelling folky/pop songs. We think it’s a great idea, but sadly, the Hapa tour will end at the Tractor Tavern in Seattle, Washington on March 23rd. Local Seattle support will be with singer/songwrite/hapa Jessie Siren.

Vu and John just caught “The Hapa Tour” at Cedar Cultural Center last night (March 14th), featuring co-headliners Meiko and Marié Digby. The next Hapa stop will be at Tractor Tavern in Seattle, Washington on March 23rd.

We quickly recap local Daniel Sun, Marié, and Meiko.

As we mentioned, Meiko is no longer with major label Concord Music Group, and instead will be releasing her next album (currently untitled) via PledgeMusic. The new album, being recorded in Nashville with producer Joshua Grange, and is now available for pre-order at pledgemusic.com/meiko.

According to the Pledge page, portions of all proceeds will be donated to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

If you’re not familiar with the term ‘hapa’, it means a person of mix racial heritage with partial roots in Asian and/or Pacific Islander ancestry. Meiko is one-quarter Japanese on her maternal grandmother’s side, and Marié Digby’s mother is Japanese.

We’ve seen Meiko numerous times and can only say that we’re ‘hapy’ she’s back in town.

Canada's Lights (aka Valerie Poxleitner) is kicking off her national US tour at Mill City Nights in Minneapolis this Valentine's Day (Saturday) with support from X Ambassadors. If it wasn't for the fact that I've already committed to Sleater-Kinney and Lizzo this same night, I'd definitely be checking out this geek girl pop multi-instrumentalist (she's into comic books!)

The Little Machines tour will take her to Coachella 2015, which Ryan Seacrest included Lights in his '10 Artists You Must See at Coachella,' saying "Lights has a knack for creating celestial beats by combining alternative rock and contemporary synth-pop."

With a couple of Juno Awards (sort of like Australia's ARIA Awards or USA's American Music Awards) and Gold records under her belt (and not to mention a recently sold out European tour), she's amassed a dedicated 'Lights Army' over the years (1.3 million Facebook fans, over half a million Twitter fans), including self-professed fans Miley Cyrus, John Mayer, and K'Naan among others.

Singer/songwriter Meiko's second night in her Fall/Winter 2014 tour took place at the Loring Pasta Bar in Minneapolis, last night, September 21, 2014. If you were a little worried about how the Loring Pasta Bar would host live music, fear not! Like its sister venue, the Varsity Theater, the same people were involved in setting up the lights, the sound, the stage, and not to mention the beautiful décor.

Buddy

Taking the stage as scheduled at 9:30pm, Los Angeles-based Buddy noted he was a little hesitant playing a "pasta bar" after a Tango band, who occupied the stage only an hour earlier. Normally, Buddy is a five-piece band, but going on tour, it is just Buddy and his acoustic guitar. Of the five or six times he's been in Minneapolis, he said that last night was the coldest, which got a little chuckle from the audience.

Buddy's brief set included one new song, "Anchor", from his latest Last Call for the Quiet Life (Stove Punchin' Records), with the remainder of the set from 2007's Alterations and Repairs (Stove Punchin' Records), including their biggest hit "Say a Lot."

"Say a Lot" had a great backstory, which I've heard before at a previous Buddy show. The story is that Buddy told all his friends and family to watch Gray's Anatomy to hear their song. Unfortunately the song was used during a heavy scene featuring a heart transplant, where the patient died at the end. His mother called and congratulate Buddy... but "without the congratulatory tone." Then, out of nowhere, she asked Buddy, "Are you sad?"

For his finale, Buddy played "Raleigh" off-mike and serenading the crowd as he moved in the middle of the room.

Meiko

We've been following Los Angeles-based Meiko for quite a long time now, ever since she appeared on the Hotel Café Festival in 2007, along with other women singer/songwriters like Rachael Yamagata and Ingrid Michaelson.... of whom she thanked and made referenced to as an introduction to her hit song, "Boys With Girlfriends." It was that song that she sent to local station Cities97, that was picked up and put on rotation, that built and audience for Meiko in the Twin Cities. Ever since then, she's been regularly playing Minneapolis.

Meiko had little stories about all her songs, some really funny and eye-opening. For example, she was approached by a couple who said that they used her song "Reasons To Love You" for their wedding dance... which was on opposite end of how she felt about that song. Meiko was fighting with her then-boyfriend and in a passive-aggressive way, she was strumming and writing that song. At the end of the fight, she finished writing "Reasons To Love You."

Other interesting stories she told was how proud she was to be part Japanese, and as one of her criteria when she signed to her record label Fantasy Records/Concord, was that they had to bring her to Japan. She was ecstatic that by the time she toured Japan, she had a #1 hit with "Stuck on You", and about 30 family members showed up to her show. They didn't speak English and she didn't speak Japanese, but "lots of peace signs were thrown around."

In the middle of her set, she played a few new songs ("Sweeter", "Deep Sweat", "Lose It") from the forthcoming Dear You album, which she said that she try and mix it up with old familiar songs. She doesn't like going to a show where artists would play all new songs, so she kept it to a minimum. Of the new songs, they are typically about breakups, which she confessed she doesn't like writing happy songs as she found them boring.

There was a fly that was bothering Meiko during "Sweeter", a song about her ex-boyfriend who cheated on her with a Hooter's girl called Jeanette. After the song, she mentioned that one time a fly flew up her nose at a concert. Then during "Boys With Girlfriends," she stopped abruptly mid-song, but immediately said, "it was not a fly!" She cleared her throat and continued to finish the song, like a pro.

Meiko ended her set with, what she called "a parody song". The song, "You and Onions Make Me Cry" is not available anywhere, except for music film, which she appeared in as the hotdog girl.

Meiko's upcoming Dear You album is due out in two weeks via PledgeMusic, you can pre-order now. She's currently in the middle of her Fall/Winter 2014 tour, which will eventually take her to China this November. See full date listing below:

I have seen Meiko a few times, once at SXSW 2009 and semi-recently at 7th Street Entry in 2012.

For this upcoming Fall/Winter 2014 tour, she will feature the same opener, Buddy, from the last tour. Buddy has a new album called Last Call For The Quiet Life, which came out August 19 via Stove Punchin' Records.

Also, please note that the show will take place at the Loring Pasta Bar (right next to the Varsity) and the show starts late (9pm) and is 18+ only. If I know anything about Meiko, it is that she used to waitress, and she'll definitely be reminding you that you need to tip your waiters/waitress at least 20%.

Wanz (from 'Thrift Shop' and Macklemore fame) recently released a new "The Christmas Song" single via The End Records. "The Christmas Song" debuted on Jimmy Fallon after a performance with The Roots.



Michael "Wanz" Wansley started his career singing at school grounds and later with his first band, Central Connection.

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis eventually recruited Wanz to sing on their song about shopping for second-hand clothes, called "Thrift Shop", and the track quickly climbed the Billboard charts before landing at number one and holding that spot for six weeks total.

Comedian Jim Breuer released his new comedy single "Santa Claus Ain't Coming to Town" last week, December 2nd. The song is the feature single from his highly-anticipated album, scheduled to hit stores nationwide in spring 2014.

In case you didn't know, Breuer is known for his impersonations of Metallica, Ozzy Osborne and AC/DC, so it's only natural that his version of "Santa Claus Ain't Coming to Town" is a metalized version of the song.

Atlanta-based Chinua Hawk's latest album is called Waiting on Christmas.

THE HOLLYWOOD CHRISTMAS PARADE

The annual Hollywood Christmas Parade just took place December 1st, but you can check with The Hallmark Channel and syndication for re-broadcast closer to Christmas.

This parade is one of the longest running parade of its kind, with this year marking its 82nd anniversary. It was previously known as the Hollywood Santa Parade, but about six years ago (2007), they officially changed the name to Hollywood Christmas Parade.

This year's show includes performances from Stevie Wonder, Bill Ray Cyrus, the Goo Goo Dolls, Daughtry, Kenny Loggins, LeAnn Rimes, William Shatner (read more about the Shat here!), McClain, Ace Young and Diana DeGarmo, Richie Sambora, and more. She did throw some old favorites like "Piano Song," "Boys With Girlfriends," and "Sleep" (per fan's request.)

You can tell that Meiko was quite pleased at the large turnout last night. She was the most talkative I've ever seen her and she looked happier than ever. I suppose that's her positive side, as reflected on her happier songs on the new album, The Bright Side.

Encore songs were "Hawaii" and "You Gotta F***in' Tip." The latter is obviously about the time when she was waitressing at Hotel Café. The story behind this song was some jerk ordered two Grey Goose Martinis and gave a big fat zero on the tip line. This is where she got scary and stalkerish and found him on his Myspace page. So, let that be a lesson to you all.*

Meiko is currently on tour in support of her latest album, The Bright Side, out now via Fantasy/Concord Records.

* PS, I have a funny tip story; I was on holiday in a remote Asian city and ate at this tiny restaurant. When I got up to leave, the waitress stopped me and said I forgot my money on the table. You don't know how weird it is to explain to someone that the money was tip (apparently no one tips in that part of the country.)
