Wale’s The Joy Formidable (vocalist/guitarist Ritzy Bryan, bassist Rhydian Dafydd, drummer Matt Thomas) is back in town, after their recent Foo Fighters North American tour. The group’s fourth album AAARTH is out now.

We love the band, and talked about the band before their first single was officially released in July 2008, a decade ago.

As for Tancred, we saw her n March 2016 and said, “A little backstory on Jess Abbott, who mentioned on stage that she lived in Minneapolis for five years and does not miss the snow/cold (she currently resides in California). In fact, she’s downright disappointed that it was so cold (and snowing) on the night that she was back in town. Her connection to Minneapolis is that she is the guitarist for Now, Now (fka Now, Now Every Children).”

The always fun Lily Allen is back in the United States as part of her “#NOSHAME” tour. She’ll be stopping by the Varsity Theater in Minneapolis on November 1st.

We saw her in Oct 2014 and said, “Here's the thing about Allen, she writes lyrics like she sees them. They are songs about people she knows and how she feels about them, for example, "Alfie" about her kid brother Alfie Allen and Game of Thrones star...”

If you’re wondering about the high ticket price ($62), it’s justified because she has employed over 10 dancers/staff and undergoes various costume changes throughout her set.

Note: This is an all-ages show and doors are opened at 5:30pm.

We were so impressed with Low Cut Connie at Rock the Garden earlier this year, that we can’t wait for their upcoming November 1st show.

Since we saw them, the band have been busy appearing on various radio and television and wowing audiences across the nation. Rolling Stone loved them so much that they’ve added their record on their 50 Best Albums of 2018 so far.

Show up early to check out Ruby Boots; she was last seen in town on June 2018. Ruby is an Australian, but based in Nashville, Tennessee. Fans of Nikki Lane should take note, as Lane co-wrote/sang on some of her songs.

Of my 113 live shows I personally attended in 2014, these are my top ten.

1. Slowdive at Fine Line (31 Oct 2014)
An absolutely unforgettable show. After a 22 year absent, the band is back, healthier, happier, and dressed for the occasion (Halloween). Played all the hits, completely professional and absolutely a treat (like the candies they handed out) to finally see live.

2. Kaiser Chiefs at First Ave (13 June 2014)
WOW, these guys are amazing live. They did some things on this show that I've never, ever seen done at First Avenue (climbing owner's box rafters).

3. Paul Weller at Varsity Theater (10 Sep 2014)
Speaking of 20+ years absent from Minneapolis, the Modfather Paul Weller returned to the city. Fans of British music could not absolutely miss this sold out show.

4. Stars at First Avenue (19 Nov 2014)
Maybe it was because they were filming this live show for Yahoo, but this was a great show. I've criticized the band before when they only played new songs... but not this 2014 show. They played a lot of old stuff, including some hits and they did it because of the fans.

5. Lily Allen at Skyway (01 Oct 2014)
I love it when a band put on a show, and that's exactly what I got when I saw Allen. Sure, the setlist is the same every night, but the routines (including three costume changes) were absolutely fun to watch.

6. Peter Hook at Fine Line (15 Nov 2014)
I'll probably never see New Order live, so seeing Peter Hook play some classic New Order songs were good enough for me. Plus, bad snowstorm and sold out environment and three-hour music set, made it for a memorable show.

7. Buzzcocks at Varsity Theater (11 Sep 2014)
Legendary punk band... absolute blast to see them still at it.

8. Tori Amos at O'Shaughnessy (03 Aug 2014)
My first time seeing Tori, and it was everything I expected! Her set is different every night, thanks to fan requests... so you never know what she is going to play!

9. Pixies at State Theatre (11 Oct 2014)
This is one of those bands on my bucket list... I can finally cross them off the list. Really tight show, the band played all the hits and showcased their new songs.

10. Festival Palomino (20 Sep 2014)
Although the Americana music thing isn't my cup of tea, I have to give big thumbs up for this incredibly well-organized first-ever music festival of its kind. The event sold so well that they've already announced a second Festival Palomino... so obviously I'm looking forward to 2015.

Lily Allen is currently in the US, touring in support of her latest album, Sheezus (Regal, Parlophone), stopping by the Skyway Theatre in Minneapolis last night.

New York's Lolawolf started the show. The thing to note about this band, is that they are fronted by singer Zoë Kravitz (the daughter of Lenny Kravitz).

The trio played 10 tracks from their forthcoming album Calm Down (out October 10th on Innit Recordings, LLC./Cult Records), including the title track, "Dirty Feeling", "What Love Is" (one of the keyboard not working for this song) and set closer "Bitch".

Often in cases where the singer is also a movie star or model or have other higher profile profession, they tend to put their music career on the side... so I'm not really sure how serious Zoë Kravitz is with this band - especially when opportunities like appearing in Divergent (and its sequels?) is too good to say no to.

Also note, apparently Kravitz and Har Mar Superstar are friends, as she asked for him twice on stage. Har Mar was previously seen at Caroline Smith/Lizzo last Saturday and at Drowners on Monday... so not a surprise to hear that he was also at last night's show.

In 2005, Lily Allen was burning up on the music social website MySpace. Her songs were getting millions of hits, and before long major label Parlophone/Columbia Records swooped in to sign her. Her music is pop music, and even though I normally don't like pop, I was drawn to her. When I heard that she won the NME award for best solo artist in 2006, I noted how impressed I was.

I would have gone see her live in Minneapolis in 2007, but she immediately canceled the show as soon as it was announced. According to NME, she was playing some bad shows and "I don't want people spending money on a going to see a show that isn't the best it could be." The first time she actually appeared in Minneapolis on April 11, 2009, I was already committed to covering Copeland and had to miss Lily Allen's show... so I was really looking forward to Lily Allen at the Skyway Theatre.

Here's the thing about Allen, she writes lyrics like she sees them. They are songs about people she knows and how she feels about them, for example, "Alfie" about her kid brother Alfie Allen and Game of Thrones star: "My little brother's in his bedroom smoking weed. I tell him he should get up cos it's nearly half past three. He can't be bothered cos he's high on THC." or about stars in the public, "And I'll take my clothes off and it will be shameless, 'cause everyone knows that's how you get famous." or about ex-boyfriends "At first when I see you cry, yeah it makes me smile, yeah it makes my smile."

It's these unfiltered and often honest thoughts that makes Allen an interesting singer and songwriter, in my opinion. I can relate to her lyrics, and sometime they're a little too close to home!

After the It's Not Me, It's You tour in 2009, she took a (long five year) break... which she revealed on stage she went away to "have babies." Based on the lightup giant baby bottles on stage, I can only guess that it's that portion of her life that she doesn't want to re-visit.

As for the setlist, it is the same night after the night. That is a necessity because of specific breaks for costume changes and scheduled dancers. There were four key costume changes, she came out in a sweater-esque top, then during "LDN" she took it off to reveal a leather bra. Half way into the set, she went backstage to come back in a cheetah outfit. Finally, for the encore, it's a rainbow top.

Obviously the old hits like "LDN", "Smile" and "Not Fair" were really welcomed by the singalong I hear from the crowd. The biggest surprise to me was their set closer, "F*** You". I have always liked the song, but I never knew that so many people loved it as well! It's not a classical "radio hit" because of the F-word, but obviously it's an underground hit. Allen said that she knew this was a pop song, but she could never get the production right. She must have gotten something right, because the entire audience was singing along.

Ask any fan in the audience and they will tell you that this was such a fun show, mostly thanks to the visuals (dancers in dog masks, light show, stage props, and costumes) and great music.

Lily Allen will be ending her US tour next week in October. If she's playing in your town, go see her on this fun little tour.

Last month, Mutual Benefit (aka Jordan Lee) went back and remastered his Cowboy’s Prayer EP, as an etched one-sided 12" on Other Music Records. In celebration of the new EP, he's been out on tour since September 3rd... the tour continues until the end of October, ending in New York.

Opening up for the 7th Street Entry show, in Minneapolis, will be Ricky Eat Acid, an ambient project from Maryland's Sam Ray, and Har-Di-Har, a local dreampop/pysch/folk duo.

Is the Summer really over? Wow, that was fast! One of the highlight of the Summer was Paul McCartney at Target Center, who played nearly three hours of music. But was the past... Vu and John look forward to "Something Fall-ish", music shows in the Twin Cities in the next two months.

News: Breaking up is hard to do

I got a note from the Astralwerks band Free Energy saying that some of their shows were canceled due to the fact that the Rakes broke up. That was a bit of a shocker, considering that I thought the Rakes, along with Bloc Party, were a really successful band with top 40 singles.

Here is an excerpt from the statement from the band, dated October 22^nd:

The Rakes have always been very adamant and proud of the fact that we give 100% to every gig we’ve ever played. If we can’t give it everything then we won’t do it. That was the rule we set ourselves from day one. After much deliberation we have come to the shared conclusion that we can’t give it 100% anymore and regret to announce that The Rakes are calling it a day.

A total of 10 dates were canceled by Free Energy, but here is the new dates (note: Minneapolis is canceled):

Speaking of splitting, Lily Allen will be splitting from her record label, EMI. Allen, who recently had that insert-mouth-in-foot moment when she had nothing but disdain her fans for sharing her music, is to set up her own record label. She's currently has no plans on touring or promoting her latest album, It's Not Me, It's You and have pretty much abandoned being on the internet.

Not breaking up, Jarvis Cocker was recently quoted by People Magazine as having said:

Glastonbury means an awful lot to me, I would love to play there again. We've talked about it, there we go, there'll be a band reunion.

That sparked a slew of rumors that Pulp were reforming for Glasto 2010.

Unfortunately, as quick as the rumor started, it was also swiftly put to an end when Jarvis came out to say that "Pulp have no plans to get back together".

Someone asked me if I fancied playing at the 40th anniversary of Glastonbury, I said yes, they twisted that into a 'Pulp reform' story. It's not true.

Speaking of further complications: It's widely reported that Morrissey collapse on the floor on the opening song, "This Charming Man" at Oasis Leisure Centre, due to breathing difficulties.

Although, NME said Morrissey to resume tour in London following onstage collapse, I suspect there will be even more cancellations in the future. Morrissey's has always been notorious for cancelling shows, due to illness and/or unexplained circumstances. I have seen Morrissey live before, but my original ticket to see him in somewhen 1994 was dashed when he canceled that show in Los Angeles. I believe we ponied up $75 per ticket (that was like a billion dollars back then).

Of course, none of this compare to the fan outage of Denny offering free burgers to fans who bought tickets to see Morrissey. Morrissey, as you know, is famous for being an advocator of vegetarianism.

News: Lily Allen and Mason Proper Remixed, Beastie Boys are old, Gossip & Jetpacks Tour

Here's a roundup of some music news that's come across news.weheartmusic.com.

I don't know how this is entirely legal, but LA-producer Doctor Rosen Rosen remixed Lily Allen's album, It's Not Me, It's You and made it available as a free download on his website, doctorrosenrosen.com. The only thing that he claim to have lifted is Allen's original vocal tracks and that all the background and mix is completely original.

Clearly the man is in love with Lily Allen. He admitted to first seeing the video for "Smile" in "a crappy hotel room" while on tour in Iceland. Ever since then, he's been a fan. He reached out to her record label to see if they were commissioning remixes for her new record, but of course, they weren't interested. But that wouldn't stop a man obsessed, right? So what we have here is an un-endorsed, unofficial release of a "darker" remixed album of It's Not Me, It's You.

While I think this is a good marketing ploy to expose non-fans to Lily Allen, it's also great exposure for this producer/mixer Doctor Rosen Rosen as well. Unfortunately, I think the lawyers won't agree on my views.

Mason Proper - Safe For The Time Being (The Paronomasiac Remix)

Speaking of free downloads, goldestegg.com tells me that the new Remix EP from Mason Proper (official/myspace/W♥M) is available for free. The link I'm given is zShare. You get "Safe for the Time Being" remixed by The Paronomasiac and Wallpaper. (I recently mentioned his remix of Das Racist, calling it "d-u-m"). What's cool is the EP also includes a video for "Safe for the Time Being".

There's no doubt about it, the Beastie Boys are old. Even Triumph the Insult Dog pointed this out at their recent Bonnaroo appearance.

You've gone from "Check Your Head" to "Check Your Prostate".

Apparently Adam ("MCA") Yauch was diagnosed with "cancerous tumor in his left parotid (salivary) gland". It's treatable, but unfortunately it affected MCA's vocal chords... as a result, Beastie Boys canceled all upcoming concert appearances.

From a video statement on Beastieboys.com:

I just need to take a little time to get this in check, and then we'll release the record and play some shows. It's a pain in the neck (sorry had to say it) because I was really looking forward to playing these shows, but the doctors have made it clear that this is not the kind of thing that can be put aside to deal with later.

Hype Machine Popular (7-20-09)

Elizabeth & the Catapult - Race You

Finally, W♥M made some news, however minor it was. One of our tracks for Elizabeth & The Catapult became wildly popular on The Hype Machine! It peaked at #10 on the popular list, which are ranked when a Hype user marked the song as "love". As soon as the track hit the top 20, the "love" number grew quickly to 170 (just to give you an idea, average 'loved' W♥M tracks are about 1 to 5).

After three days, The Hype Machine dropped the song off their ranking.

Compiling Compilations

Seems silly to compile compilation albums, isn't it?

Well, compilation albums are such a great source of discovering new music. Especially if they're cover compilations (since you already know some of the songs, you're willing to take a chance on something new). So below are some compilations that I thought I'd bring to your attention. Plus two of them are available for download for free, so check it out:

The most interesting cover is "Get Me Away I'm Dying" translated into Italian by Perturbazione. To hear another version of this song by Bettie Serveert, head over to Cover Lover.

Haley Bonar - The Queen Of Everything

This 2007 album compiles some of the best Minneapolis bands. There are some excellent bands on here. At least five really amazing songs, so picking one is really hard for me. I've decided to just use the first song by Haley Bonar. It sounds a bit naughty.

The other songs will be spotlighted later in my Minneapolis entry.

Irene - Stardust

You know we love the Swedes here, so I wanted to mention about this Swedish Indiepop compilation.

Most of the bands on this compilation have already been covered by us (see W♥M: Sweden). I wanted to mention a band that we haven't talked about: which would be Irene. Checking out their myspace, I noticed they're going to be playing Eurosonic Festival in January 2008.

"Stardust" seems like a very short song but it's very good. I especially love Bobby's bold voice (it reminds me of 80s Europop). If you like this, you'll probably really love The Legends - which we're also reviewing here.

Check out Exotic Recordings. We've covered one of their band on W♥M, but I'm planning on reviewing a few more from them in this month.

This compilation, I believe some of the songs are original. I do know each of the introduction to the song (usually a "diss") were recorded exlusively for this compilation.

I'm assuming these compilation (which aren't for sale) are given away if you buy a CD from them.

Pavement - Stereo

EVERYTHING IS NICE: MATADOR RECORDS 10TH ANNIVERSARY ANTHOLOGY
Released in 1999, this is a 3-disc set.

The tracks that I really liked off this compilation is Non Phixon and The Arsonists.

Obviously, Pavement is undoubtedly one of the more popular band that is on this compilation - so here's "Stereo".

The prices are pretty reasonably, I think I picked it up for $10 (for about 40 tracks!)

The Gentle Waves - Sister Woman

These came free with Select Magazines

This song is from The Gentle Waves' second album, Swansong for You (2000), it's my second favorite song after "Falling from Grace".

Lily Allen - Knock 'em Out

They give these things out for free, they're basically samplers from EMI.

I've discovered quite a few good bands from these samplers, their latest one has a great track by Lily Allen. This song is pretty cute, it's about coming up with excuses to avoid being picked up - including the hilarious "I'm pregnant, yeah."

Sway - More LDN

Lily Allen Vs Sway

Sway is the stagename for Derek Safo who is a rapper from London. He started off making backbeat mixes for rappers before trying rhyming himself. And obviously London offered an 8-mile style rap battle, which he was also a part of.

The most important break came when he was asked to be the main support for The Streets last year.

I came across Sway because I was specifically looking for bicycle songs for my bike ride. It's not a cover and it's not a mashup, it's an original rap over samples of Lily Allen's "LDN".

The song here seems to trying to add commentary to Lily Allen's song, such as how he relate to the song because he's from London. He wasn't sure how he felt about Lily at first, but ended up buying her album. He loved the album so much that he even wrote a message to Lily on her myspace (but she never wrote back).

In order to get her to notice him, he decided to write this song for her, with this message in the song:

I don't have a one-track mind
But I've got this track in mind
That could be my single
Are you single?
If you're listening, you could come help me on my LP
I'll do a track for yours if you do a track for mine
