Derby’s The Struts are quickly adding additional dates for their “Strange Days Are Over Tour”… which includes this upcoming appearance at the Palace Theatre on September 18th.

We last saw the band live in May 2016 and wrote, “When the band had last played the Mainroom in Sept 2015, singer Luke Spiller was under the weather, resulting only in an eight-song/forty-five min. set, with the pledge that they would return and make things right. The resulting 95 min. arena-worthy, hedonistic throwdown was a night-to-day difference, electric in its energy, and put their previous appearance far back in the rearview mirror. Spiller and the rest of the band (guitarist Adam Slack, bassist Jed Elliott and drummer Gethin Davies) echo the heyday of glam and good time rock with their own sound drawn from a mixture of Queen, Rolling Stones, The Sweet, and Slade, and Spiller obviously had picked up a few more Mick Jagger-esque moves, opening for the Stones in front of 80,000 in Paris and elsewhere.”

Atlanta-born-and-raised quartet, and not from Algeria, Algiers, will be stopping by the 7th Street Entry on September 20th. Their latest album There is No Year is out now on Matador Records. Although the band is from Georgia, technically they originally formed in London with the release of their first single, “Blood” in 2012, via Double Phantom Records.

The band made a name for themselves opening up for Depeche Mode… so if you like DP, you’ll love Algiers.

Two-piece experimental, electronic rock project Zen Mother will open the show.

The co-headlining Rufus Wainwright and José González is coming to Minneapolis at the Northrop Auditorium on September 23rd.

Rufus Wainwright is currently on tour in support of Unfollow The Rules – The Paramour Sessions, a live recording of his 2020 album Unfollow the Rules (plus other classic songs from his discography).

We last saw Sweden’s José González (formerly of Junip) in April 2015 and noted, “For the encore, they invited Ólöf Arnalds on stage with the full band and they played "I'll Be Your Mirror", the Velvet Underground (with Nico) cover song. It is a very faithful cover, you can tell right away that they got the notes just right. The rest of the encore were two songs from the new album…”

Indie folk singer-songwriter and guitarist José González is currently on a sold-out US tour, stopping by the Cedar Cultural Center for a two night residency (April 16 and April 17). González has a new album Vestiges & Claws (Mute); his first album in seven years. We caught the Swedish/Spanish singer on Thursday night.

Ólöf Arnalds

Opening up the show was Icelandic singer/songwriter Ólöf Arnalds, who we previously saw in 2013 with Jherek Bischoff. I've also previously mentioned was the singer of múm and cousin to neo-classical composer Ólafur Arnalds.

Ólöf, alone on stage with her acoustic guitar, sang some new songs from her latest Palme (One Little Indian), including "Turtledove" to an extremely quiet and polite Cedar Cultural Center audience. Her one cover in her 30-min set was "Caetano Veloso" by Brazilian singer Maria Bethânia.

Sweden's José González took the stage with a full touring band and backlit stage lighting.

Setlist

José González's set can be broken down in three parts: the first section featuring mostly songs from the latest album Vestiges & Claws ("Afterglow", "Stories We Build, Stories We Tell", "Every Age", "With The Ink Of A Ghost"), but throwing in some older songs and a Kylie Minogue cover ("Hand on Your Heart") and one Junip song (González's band).

In the middle of the set, the band took a break and left González on stage to play a solo set of his solo debut album Veneer: "Crosses", "Hints", and "Heartbeats".

The third and last part of his set was fun. González basically played one new song, three covers (Barbarossa, Arthur Russell, and an odd choice of Massive Attack), and ending with two songs from his previous solo album In Our Nature ("Down the Line" and "Cycling Trivialities").

NOTE: Although "Let It Carry You" was listed as the fourth song in the set, it was not played early... instead, they saved it for the encore.

Mastodon and Clutch are co-headlining The Missing Link Tour, with the bands swapping out closing the evening depending on dates and locations.

Neil Fallon (singer of Clutch) responded: "When we first announced the Missing Link itinerary it was received with a lot of excitement. It also received a good deal of consternation regarding the lack of a Detroit date. Myself included. So, we're happy to announce that there is now a Detroit gig on May, 23rd at the Freedom Hill Amphitheater. See ya there."

Supporting bands Big Business, who recently supported Mastodon throughout a sold-out European tour, is listed to open the show in Minnesota. We previously saw Big Business with the Sword in March 2014, which we described as, "Having previously opened for Tool and as the rhythm section of The Melvins Big Band, the trust was earned, and they did not disappoint."

It's official, José González entire North American tour is sold out*. This is Gonzales' first solo tour dates since 2008 (we previously saw him with Junip in 2011 and 2013), so fans are very eager to see him live again with a full band.

González will be playing tracks from his latest album Vestiges & Claws, his first album in seven years, which Under The Radar called it "a succinct evolution."

We're also excited to see that Olöf Arnalds was tapped as opener. She is the cousin to Ólafur Arnalds and múm singer.

Who would have thought that two of my favorite bands are playing the same night (Saturday 04/18) in Minneapolis? Information Society will be at the Fine Line Music Café in support of their latest album _Hello World, with openers Thought Thieves, Dance Assault and DJ Jake Rudh of Transmission ...

Since I'm not a fan of the Fine Line (for its aggressive no-camera policies and bad sightlines), I'm probably going to choose old favorites They Might Be Giants at First Avenue. TMBG's 2015 national tour kicks off next week, April 16th, in celebration of their Dial-A-Song service/collection. Admittedly, when I was in their fanclub, back in the days when long distances charges was a common telephone tactic to charge you more for their services... I did pay to call to their answering machine. Those were the days....

Anyway, the last time the duo (John Flansburgh and John Linnell) was in town (in 2013) it was sold out, so expect a strong fan support at this show.

You may recall that we covered the trio's Minneapolis appearance two years ago.…

Thanks to the Current radio station, last night's Junip show at the Cedar Cultural Center, in Minneapolis, was sold out. This is both good and bad: good because it's great exposure for the band and bad because a lot of attendees aren't necessary fans. Dedicated fans without tickets were left outside the venue hoping someone had extra tickets to sell them.

BARBAROSSA

Opening up was Barbarossa, a one-man-band consisting of James Mathé, on the keys and organs. It was his first time in Minneapolis, although he confessed that he was really excited to be here because of the quality of music, citing Polica (he was on tour with them) and On An On (a band from Minneapolis and Chicago).

Barbarossa sang mostly original relationship, emotional, personal songs, like "Bloodline", "Butterfly Plague", and his set closer "The Load". The highlight of his brief set was a cover of Terence Trent Darby's hit single "Wishing Well".

ZOO ANIMAL

Next was Zoo Animal, a band that I've seen a few times. Mostly with just Holly Newsom by herself, so it's always nice to see her backed up with a full functioning band.

Highlight of their set was a brand new song, never performed live before. Newsom said it was a song she stole from another band, but then the rest of Zoo Animals made it good.

This was a triumphant return to Minneapolis for Junip.

This was a triumphant return to Minneapolis for Junip. Compared to their last appearance at the Cedar (José González with two other musicians sat down to a very quiet and intimate set), Junip was now a more traditional band with five band members, including production work from James Mathé (Barbarossa) in the background. This was a controlled show with direction in mind. Lights were minimalistic to set the mood, spotlight usually on the massive background image of deer. There was no stage banter, but this is not a surprise since González hardly spoke between songs at his previous appearance.

The band played tracks from Fields and their latest self-titled album (including "So Clear", "Your Life Your Call", "Suddenly", and their set closer "After All Is Said and Done").

Encore was "Black Refuge" and "Line Of Fire Lyrics", both from two different EPs.

Junip continues their tour through North America. Their self-titled album is available now via Mute Records.*

Swedish color and light: Shout Out Louds tour in support of ‘Optica’

Stockholm-based Shout Out Louds produced themselves for the first time (assisted by Johannes Berglund) on their fifth and latest release, 'Optica' (Merge Records), and begin touring this May (including a 5/17 date in Minneapolis) in support of the disc. Formed over ten years ago by friends Adam Olenius (vocals), Ted Malmros (bass), and Carl von Arbin (guitars) with Eric Edman (drums) and Bebban Stenborg (keys) joining shortly thereafter, their high energy, melodic pop has already found an audience worldwide.

Their latest effort tries to recapture the more relaxed spirit of their earlier recordings, taking almost a year and a half to create with each band member responsible for coming up with their own song parts, and is embellished with strings, trumpets and flutes. How that all will translate live, is curious enough to want to go and find out for yourself.

Gothenburg's Junip is returning to Minneapolis, this time to promote the sophomore self-titled album, which came out April 23rd, 2013, via Mute Records.

Junip is a Swedish band, with singer José González. The impression I got from the audience at last night's show at the Cedar Cultural Center, in Minneapolis, was that most people there were already familiar with Gonzalez's work and this was their first time seeing him in the band Junip (also featuring Elias Araya on drums and Tobias Winterkorn on keys). Although, Gonzales said on stage that it was his fourth time playing Minneapolis, but that it was Junip's second Minneapolis show.

ACRYLICS

Opening up for them were New York's Acrylics, a boy (Jason) girl (Molly) vocal pop band. They seem really grateful to stuck in a tour bus with Junip, it's their sixth show with them and their first time in Minneapolis. They sounded really amazed at the Walker Art sculpture garden. Hint: the museum is free on Thursday!

Anyway, my favorite song played on their set is their title track from their new album, "Lives and Treasure" (recently released March 1^st, 2011). The song is really upbeat and Johan Grettve, from Junip, joined them on stage to jam on the bongo drums. Personally, I thought they should've ended their set with that song, but instead they played out to "The Catacombs".

Junip came on stage to a very excited crowd. When they play live, they also include an extra percussionist, Grettve, and extra guitarist, Joel Wästberg. They added a nice stronger sound, especially Grettve who juggle a variety of instruments, including a glass cup, towels over the percussions, tambourine, bongo drums, and recorder. Winterkorn also added a lot to their songs, he's producing some really interesting organic sounds from his Moog machine.

JUNIP

As you can see from the setlist, most of the song were from their album, Fields, including a delightful version of "It's Alright" (my favorite from the live set). They mixed it up with some songs from their previously EP, including "Official" and "Black Refuged". Also, interestingly enough, a b-side, "Wait Rain", from their new EP, In Every Direction, which is available on iTunes.

Since I suspect Junip will come back to Minneapolis, based on the good turnout for a Monday, I would suggest a seated show next time (the Cedar can accommodate for either seated or standing room). The problem with performers who sit down for performances is that it's harder for people, in general, to see what's happening on stage.
