Australian sample pioneers The Avalanches (Robbie Chater and Tony Di Blasi) headlined the Varsity Theater, in Minneapolis, on Friday, September 30th.

Opening the show was Arizona’s Kareem Ali (كريم علي). The self-described “EEM” (Ethereal Electronic Music) DJ spent the entire 40-min set laser focused on his laptop, while in complete darkness (with random backlight).

The music was a lot of club-pulsing synths, which got the crowd bumping and dancing. You can sample some of his tracks, such as “Stay Strong” and “Love Is Why” on his Soundcloud.

In the late 90s, Melbourne’s The Avalanches (then a full band with a rapper, drummer and so on) spent the better part of their lives touring with Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Beastie Boys, Public Enemy, etc. After the massive success of Since I Left You in 2000, the band sort of just took a break from touring six years later. The 2016 touring band featured Robbie Chater on mixing, Andy Szekeres on keyboards, synthesizer, Spank Rock on rapping, Eliza Wolfgramm on vocals, Paris Jeffree on drums, Oscar Vicente Slorach-Thorn on vocals, and Jonti Danilewitz on guitars.

Currently, it would seem that The Avalanches are keeping it simple with just Robbie Chater and Tony Di Blasi, doing all the live mixing by themselves. The two looked really excited to be playing live, even face timing with a loved one to show them the audience and let them hear the set in real time.

Over the many years of experience, their current setup is a massive two-person table using live using samplers, analogue keyboards, bass guitar, drum kit, theremin, turntables, a percussion stand, and MIDI-controlled special effects. They also brought with them their own custom light setup, which were carefully synced with their music to display certain colors for certain songs. For example, when The Beach Boys sample of “God Only Knows” was played the background lit up a golden color.

For these DJ shows, it’s all about the light show and it’s all about the music. If you were a music nerd, you can hear all sorts of samples, from Queen to Willy Wonka, in their compositions.

Unfortunately, shortly after playing the Varsity Theater, the duo cancelled their remaining tour dates due to serious illness on October 1: “Unfortunately due to serious illness we have had to make the heartbreaking decision to cancel our remaining US and Canadian shows to return home. Thank you to everyone who has made this tour so joyous, and apologies to everyone who had tickets for the remaining shows. All ticket holders will be contacted directly with refund details. Thank you.”

People talking at shows over the band, a reported fight breaking out at the Key Glock show at the Granada – guess things are back to “normal”, haha. Seriously, hope we can better appreciate the return of live music, and can all positively enjoy the experience. 

Live Nation is offering select $25 all-in tix this week, so might be worth a look to see what’s available.

The HU, The Truman. $27.50-$55

Everyone’s favorite Mongolian deep throat-ed folk metal band brings their Black Thunder Tour to town, with a new album due out later this year.  Expect a mix of new songs and those from 2019’s The Gereg.

Jon Spencer & the Hitmakers w Quasi, recordBar. $20

After Covid caused a recent last-minute cancellation in Minneapolis (though openers Quasi still played) both bands are carrying on, with Spencer working in a Blues Explosion song or two, and Pussy Galore cover, into recent setlists.  Sleater-Kinney drummer Janet Weiss is doing double duty, leading support band Quasi and banging the skins for The Hitmakers as well. 

Boston Manor, Bottleneck. $22

Not from Boston, but rather Blackpool UK, this five-piece emo pop-punk band recently toured with Neck Deep and has new EP, Desperate Times, Desperate Pleasures, out.

Thursday May 5 (Happy Cinco de Mayo!)

Buddy Guy, Knuckleheads. $58.50

The undisputed Blues guitar master returns to leave jaws on the ground with his skilled playing, still well worth seeing in-person. Guy is 85 years-young and still performs regularly at his Chicago club, Legends, and the environment at Knuckleheads is perfect for his songs and guitar work. 

Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit w Heartless Bastards, Uptown. $65-$250

One of the strongest double-bill shows of this spring, Isbell and band released Georgia Blue late last year and even covered Metallica’s “Sad but True” for a charity tribute album last fall.  The newest album is a collection of covers from Georgia-based artists, including R.E.M., James Brown, Indigo Girls, and The Black Crowes.  We last caught Isbell and the 400 Unit alongside wife Amanda Shires at the Basilica Block Party back in the summer of 2018. 

We saw opening band Heartless Bastards headlining last fall and they’re still out in support of latest album, A Beautiful Life, the Ohio band’s sixth studio effort, which singer Erika Wennerstrom originally conceived as a solo project. 

Chuck Mead, Bottleneck. $20

Nashville singer-songwriter is a founding member of group BR5-49, worked on Broadway’s Million Dollar Quartet, and actually graduated from Lawrence High School and attended the University of Kansas, so it’s a bit of a homecoming appearance. 

Dorothy, recordBar, $20

We are in Kansas (City) any more! The longtime Los Angeles blues hard rock band returns in support of Gifts from the Holy Ghost, (on Jay-Z’s Roc Nation imprint.)  The album’s title was derived from her guitar tech being brought back from an overdose and the album is prefaced with lead single, “Rest in Peace”.  We caught the band live in early 2019, and also in 2018, and were impressed both times.

Rosanne Cash, Lied Center. UPDATE - Postponed to June 11

After a few Covid-related postponements, the Americana singer-songwriter comes to the River City, with over four decades, twelve Grammy nominations, and eleven #1 country singles under her belt. 

Expect a setlist filled with her own songs as well as numerous covers from Bobbie Gentry, Hank Snow, and of course, her famous father Johnny Cash.

Asleep at the Wheel w Brennan Leigh, Knuckleheads, $35

Weather seems ok for this outdoor scheduled show and the legendary Western swing band has been entertaining audiences since 1970 (thus, their twenty-sixth album from 2021, Half a Hundred Years). 

Jordan Davis with Tenille Arts, Arvest Bank Theatre at the Midland $29.50-$35

The Louisiana country pop singer has been rising since debut 2017 single, “Singles You Up” and last year’s “Buy Dirt” (with Luke Bryan and from the album of the same name), also topped the charts. 

Canadian country singer Tenille Arts is getting some buzz as well, with 2021’s Girl to Girl album. 

Beach Bunny with Wednesday and Ky Voss, Granada. $25

Lilli Trifilio leads this Chicago power pop band (not to be confused with the Latin Bad Bunny) and has a highly anticipated sophomore album, Emotional Creature, due out July 22, on one of our favorite labels, Mom+Pop, prefaced by first single, “Fire Escape”. 

Openers Wednesday are from Ontario, CAN and NYC-based Ky Voss plays low-fi synth dream pop. 

Xavier Wulf, Bottleneck-Lawrence, $25/$30

Tennessee rapper also is a member of the East Memphis Boyz, has released fourteen albums/mixtapes, and has his roots in trap metal hip-hop. 

Ben Rector, Starlight Theatre Read More Ben Rector Ben Rector is an artist we’ve seen really move up to new heights over the last couple years, with melodic and memorable songs, a growing (mostly female) fan base, and a Billy Joel-influenced sound ... Hovvdy, Bottleneck-Lawrence Read More Hovvdy Lomelda and Hovvdy are on a co-headlining tour for their Covers split EP (Double Double Whammy Records). Both bands are longtime friends from Texas. Nadine to open.

Saturday May 7

Ben Rector w/ Jake Scott Starlight Theatre, $35-$69.95

The Nashville singer-songwriter released his latest, The Joy of Music at the end of last year, which features collaborations with opposite genre artists Snoop Dogg and sax player Dave Koz, and will be playing outdoors at this great metro venue.  We caught Rector live in 2017 as part of the Basilica Block Party and twice in 2016, at a proper State Theatre show, and at a more intimate outdoor radio promotional performance.

Opener Jake Scott is a LA-based Arkansas-born multi-instrumentalist currently making waves with new single, “Texas Girl” and is out in support of last summer’s Goldenboy album.  Also scheduled is Jordy Searcy and Stephen Day. 

Air Supply, Ameristar. $57-$75

They’re not “all out of love” just yet, and are ready to serenade those classic lite-rock hits. 

Saba with Lute and Amindi, Granada. $25

The Chicago rapper-producer has his third album out, Few Good Things and is out on his Back Home Tour.  Openers are Charlotte’s Lute and Los Angeles artist Amindi. 

Steel Woods, Knuckleheads. $20

Nashville country group has a new album coming May 14^th. 

Hovvdy w Molly Parden, Bottleneck-Lawrence, $15-$18

The Austin, TX indie pop duo has a new album, True Love, out now, and have followed that up with a new EP, Billboard for My Feelings and lead single, “Hide”. 

Opener Molly Parden is a Georgia native who also recently collaborated with Victor Mucho of Judah and the Lion, on a Cranberries cover with Sandra McCracken, and covered Enya with Sam Outlaw.

The classic British synth band is out on their Souvenir Tour, celebrating forty years of hits and we can confirm that Andy McCluskey, Paul Humphreys and band are as great as ever to see live.  We caught them in concert last back in 2018 and as good as that setlist was, this one will be even more packed with songs you know. 

We last saw Michigan art rock openers In the Valley Below back in 2018 in a very unique setting- they were the live soundtrack to their The Pink Chateau film in an Alamo Drafthouse movie theater.  The band has a new single, “Lie with Me” and has even released a board game. 

Car Seat Headrest with Bartees Strange, Grinders KC, $25-$50

Virginia’s Will Toledo and band have been wow-ing recent crowds on their Masquerade Tour, promising “music, dancing, and identity loss”.  The MADLO EPs should be on sale at their merch booth, which compile the previous digital-only releases, and while we’ve seen the band live a few times before, we get the feeling this will be completely different. 

Opener Bartees Strange mixes indie, jazz, and hip-hop, and has his second album, Farm to Table due June 17 and has been busy as the support act for all our favorite bands.

Texas alt-country/"Ameripolitan" guitarist remains prolific and is a true road touring warrior.

Sherman Irby Duo, Lied Center. $19-$35

Irby is the lead alto saxophone player for the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis and will be joined by bassist Mark Lewandowski.  For Rock Chalk Suite, Irby composed “The Truth” celebrating Paul Pierce and “The Ponderous Pachyderm of the Planks” honoring Clyde Lovellette.

At the 11th hour, we got word that Jon Spencer & The HITmakers was no longer playing the 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis on Saturday, April 16th. This same night, The Airborne Toxic Event postponed their appearance at First Avenue. This doesn’t surprise us anymore, we’ve already seen numerous cancellations due to COVID, etc.

I hope Spencer feels better, this is one of rock’s hardest working musician. Most people know him from the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, but he’s been involved in Pussy Galore and Boss Hog as well.

We caught Jon Spencer in June 2015 and wrote, “Against an American flag backdrop, the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion kicked into their set with a slew of new tracks starting with “Wax Dummy,” off the recent album Freedom Tower - No Wave Dance Party 2015. Jon Spencer and guitarist Judah Bauer dragging their picks across those guitar strings was like striking a match and throwing it into an audience well lubricated by alcohol and sweat. The result was as combustive as Russell Simins pounding his sticks into those skins. Babe, consider me on fire.”

With Jon Spencer not performing, opening band Quasi (Sam Coomes and Janet Weiss) unexpectedly headlined the 7th Street Entry show.

Coomes started his career with The Donner Party, and later joining Heatmiser. Weiss is famous for being founding member of Sleater-Kinney, but have played with Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks, as well as part of Wild Flag. Both brought their talents to the show, which Weiss keeping such great timing on the drums and Coomes sometime playing keys with the help of his foot (much like Little Richard on his T-Shirt).

The two played their standard 45-min set, which included “Breaking the Balls” and “It's Raining”… but once they ran out of those songs, it was open mic territory. To be fair, Weiss warned us that, “Those were the song we practiced! We’re going to try out some new ones, let’s see what happens.”

The non-setlist songs included “Hell”, “The Happy Prole”, and an instrumental jam that became their set finale.

Blues Explosion Jon Spencer is back with his band The HITmakers. I believe the touring drummer will feature Sleater Kinney’s Janet Weiss …. Who will also serve as opening band Quasi.

Talking about Weiss, Spencer said, “As a long-time fan of her wicked drumming style, I am so very excited to have this opportunity to play with Janet!”

Since SK broke up, we’ve seen Weiss drumming for various projects… including working for Stephen Malkmus as The Jicks. I’ll never forget the first time I saw them play at 80/30 Festival in Iowa and realizing it was Weiss.

Squeeze 2019 Tour Read More Squeeze "The New Lennon and McCartney", Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook (billed under their popular band name Squeeze) will be playing an acoustic set across America this November. ... KT Tunstall I’ll never forget seeing KT Tunstall over at the now-defunct Epic in Minneapolis in November 2010. KT actually paused the show so she can ask the girl in front to stop talking on her cellphone.

The “Lennon and McCartney of their generation” Squeeze is celebrating their 45th band anniversary this 2019. To celebrate, the duo is on their “The Squeeze Songbook 2019” tour.

We caught the band in Nov 2015 and wrote, “Everything old is new again as classic UK band Squeeze is back on the road, in the Americas as an acoustic tour featuring founding members Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook, playing a lively two-night sold out run recently in town and promoting Cradle to the Grave (Virgin/EMI Records), their thirteenth album and first new music since 1998.”

KT Tunstall will open the show. We’ve seen KT a few times, the last being Sep 2016 and we described it as, “The funny story about her biggest hit ‘Black Horse and the Cherry Tree’, she said after moving to Florida, she walked by an Irish bar and heard the local bar band covering her song. The singer started shredding on the solo, and she locked eyes with the singer and gave him the A-Okay hand gesture. The punch line is, the band at the Irish bar, had no idea who she was.”

We love Irish singer Glen Hansard (from The Frames and Swell Season) and always happy to see that he’s back in town. We last saw him in Nov 2015 and mentioned, “We've seen Glen Hansard before, but never quite like this. He's joined on stage by a large ensemble (see entire cast and crew photograph below), including both a horn and wind instrument section. Familiar The Swell Season songs were suddenly shown in a new, livelier, and possibly improved, versions of these classic songs.”

Hansard is returning with his new record This Wild Willing.

We saw VanderWaal at Starkey 2017 (when she was 13 years old) and wrote, “The youngest star of the evening, thirteen year-old Grace Vanderwaal next took to the stage for a short three-song set. The winner of last year’s America Got Talent competition seemed very humbled and appreciative to be invited and opened with ‘Clay’ from her Perfectly Imperfect EP (Columbia Records). “Music is the universal language, it connects to everyone in some way” she said before ‘Light the Sky’ and ended with picking up the ukulele for her first single, ‘Moonlight’.”

VanderWaal’s new single “Waste My Time” is out now and Teen Vogue described it as “synthy dance-pop smash”.

For a long time, the Cedar Cultural Center didn’t have air condition at the venue, so they didn’t really book shows in the Summer. Once they got enough donation to afford an air conditioner unit, the venue started booking shows for the summer. As part of their “African Summer” (renamed Global Summer Series), the venue often brings in African bands to the area, so if you’re a world music fan, there’s no better place to be.

Femi Kuti (the eldest son of Afrobeat pioneer Fela) will be headlining the Cedar on Tuesday, July 31st.

Very little air circulation in a building can create sauna-like conditions which are perfect for the following things: having a heat stroke, having adult relations (ala Body Heat) and watching New York City’s own irrepressible, inexplicable, unbelievable Blues Explosion!!!! put on killer rock and roll show.

But before the show even started, Jon Spencer slipped out from backstage to spin records for folks filtering into the Turf Club. As you might expect, Spencer has flawless taste and was serving up 50s and 60s-era garage and soul singles. Having someone DJing prior to the opening act is a great idea period, but knowing that it was Spencer made it extra special.

Once everyone was good and stirred up, Daddy Long Legs, a trio based in NYC but who originally hail from St. Louis, took to the stage to churn out some fantastic hip-shaking howlers. The band featured shaggy-haired Mr. Long Legs himself on vocals (he also wailed on harmonica and a gorgeous resonator guitar) accompanied by young-Keith Richards-look-alike Murat Akturk playing a mean slide guitar and drummer Josh Styles. Styles sat in between his two bandmates decked out in shades and a hat hammering out a loud beat with maracas on drum while they laid on a Howlin’ Wolf/Bo Diddley-style boogie. Kim Fowley (RIP) called them “the next step in the evolution of pagan Rock 'n' Roll!”

Against an American flag backdrop, the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion kicked into their set with a slew of new tracks starting with “Wax Dummy,” off the recent album Freedom Tower - No Wave Dance Party 2015. Jon Spencer and guitarist Judah Bauer dragging their picks across those guitar strings was like striking a match and throwing it into an audience well lubricated by alcohol and sweat. The result was as combustive as Russell Simins pounding his sticks into those skins. Babe, consider me on fire.

Over the next hour and a half, the Blues Explosion kept a relentless pace, throttling the sold-out crowd with heavy riffs, barely giving them the chance to clap let alone catch their breath. The songs seemed to melt into each other. Older favorites like “Chicken Dog” off of 1996’s Now I Got Worry and “Blues X Man” from 1994’s Orange record meshed seamlessly with new song “Do The Get Down.” They even threw in a cover of the Dead Boys’ “What Love Is” with Simins taking the lead and roaring into the mic.

Fans were still moving despite the heat because with this kind of music it’s physically impossible not to. The songs, a potent hybrid of garage, noise and rhythm and blues, contained plenty of stops and rhythm changes that made for an unpredictable show. It felt like the Blues Explosion were teetering on the edge of complete madness and the crowd was right there with them. And if the groove didn’t make you surrender yourself completely, then Spencer’s hypnotic command of that blue-hued theremin that sat behind him would have surely made your pants quiver.

Jon Spencer has said in interviews that the whole idea behind the Blues Explosion was to keep the spirit of early rock and roll alive. Well if rock and roll is the collapsed, bloated mass on the beach, having been dragged from the ocean and a certain watery death, then the Blues Explosion is the 5,000 megawatts of electricity the paramedic is administering straight into its weakened heart. The theatrics, the danger and the whipped up sexual energy that made and continues to make rock and roll exciting exists in the rollicking licks of Judah Bauer’s guitar, the punishing rhythms of Russell Simins drum and the sweat pouring down Jon Spencer’s face as he’s crowing in a blissed-out state into the microphone and at an equally enraptured audience.

Canada's July Talk is currently on tour for their self-titled album (Island/Polydor/Universal Records), which got them a 2015 Juno Award Nomination for Alternative Album of the Year. They are stopping by the Triple Rock next Saturday, June 13th.

The band is described as an alt-blues rock quintet and sings in "conversations" with singers Peter Dreimanis and Leah Fay trading lines in a lyrical face-off. It should be a fun show.

Opening up for them will be Texas punkster Purple, a band that is described as "Andrew WK's bastard child from Karen O after a night of drunken debauchery". Sounds too good to be true? Show up early to check them out.

Also on the bill, Good Night, Gold Dust, a Minnesota band that has escaped my Going for Gold series apparently.

Drawing generously from garage rock and heavy soul, New York’s Jon Spencer Blues Explosion is an unbridled blues rock fist in the face of the status quo. Guitarist Judah Baker, drummer Russell Simins and shrieker/singer/guitarist Jon Spencer have been setting hearts on fire for over two decades; their abrasive retro sound first clawed its way into the collective consciousness in 1992 with their debut Jon Spencer Blues Explosion and 1993’s Crypt Style, both collections comprised of tracks from earlier sessions with famed producers Steve Albini and Kramer. The band continued releasing one frenzied album after another (their fourth album Orange from 1994 yielded one of my favorite tunes, “Bellbottoms”) and garnered acclaim for their blistering live shows that showcased Spencer’s wild-man antics. On March 23rd, JSBX dropped a ferocious new album, Freedom Towers: No Wave Dance Party 2015 and, lucky for you and me, kitty cat, those New York rock-n-rollers are making a stop at the Turf Club on June 14th with fellow rabble-rousers Daddy Long Legs. Meet South Africa's number one selling artist Jeremy Loops. Loops debuted at #1 on iTunes in South Africa and maintained #1 on the three most prominent radio stations in Southern Africa with "Down South", his breakout single. It is pretty amazing that Loops headlined massive major music festivals, yet relatively unknown in America. Let's change that, check him out this June 15th.

Loops will likely preview some of his songs (including the hit single) from his forthcoming album Trading Change, set for release August 11th on Yebo Music.

The album is described as "Both sweet and volatile like the ketone compound namesake of Jake Webb’s formless expanding musical alter ego, these songs were recorded shortly after inception in the regional south-west over a 24 hour period in the doorless room of an old shopfront in Fremantle that he was living in at the time. Ginger Snaps

In my final installment of Halloween treats, I'm going to compile some songs about Werewolves. I actually had a lot more Halloween-related posts I wanted to do, but lately I have not been home.

It began with the Greek mythology about Lycaon who was transformed into a wolf from eating human flesh. The term "werewolf" is based on old English, meaning "man-wolf".

In modern pop culture, the definitive portrayal of the Werewolf was by Lon Chaney Jr in "The Wolf Man" (1941).

Some characteristics of the Werewolves (all based on folklore): Once bitten by a Werewolf, that person also becomes a Werewolf. They turn into a Werewolf on a Full Moon. The only way to kill them is with a Silver bullet.

 

Michael Shields - Ginger Snaps Theme

 

My favorite Werewolf movies are "Ginger Snaps". The first movie is about two teenage girls. It was brilliantly executed, paralleling the transformation to a Werewolf and going through puberty. The second movie does the same thing - only Werewolf/drug addiction. The third movie takes place in the past. All the sequels are very different from each other, in story and theme, but they are all about Werewolves.

Update: I was gonna add this yesterday, thought better of it, but Vu's convinced me... The Ginger Snaps theme, composed Michael Shields and available only on his website for free download. It's hauntingly good! Oh maybe I should also mention that the girl who played Bridget in the movie, Emily Perkins (shorter darked haired one), came to my Uni a couple years ago to give a lecture / q&a session on the show (all 3 of which we got to see free, though I'd seen the first before), then ran off with and married one of the Uni lecturers! And that thing about puberty is exactly what I though, but apparently it is just about lesbians. Who knew. - Christopher.

 

Cocorosie - Werewolf My favorite Werewolf song is - hands down - "Werewolf" by Cocorosie. Coco (Bianca Casady) and Rosie (Sierra Casady) are real-life sisters. They have released three albums through Touch and Go Records. I don't know which of the two is singing (probably Coco as her name goes first in their name), but she has this very interesting vocal style. It's like a weird accent, it reminds me a lot of Joanna Newsom[W♥M]	Warren Zevon - Werewolves of London Warren Zevon has perhaps the best-known song of this group, "Werewolves of London". The song has a comic feel to it and not to be taken too seriously. According to listeners' polls, on the Jeremy Vine show, the first verse is the #1 "Greatest Opening Song Line." I saw a werewolf with a Chinese menu in his hand Walking through the streets of Soho in the rain He was looking for the place called Lee Ho Fook's Going to get a big dish of beef chow mein
Running Wild - Prowling Werewolf Running Wild are a German heavy metal band from the 80s. What you probably didn't guess is that this song (and many of their other songs) are in English. "Prowling Werewolf", in particular, is a pretty good song. It's more like a power rock song than metal. An interesting note about Running Wild, is that they became the world's first "Pirate Metal" band. They arrrrr still an active band.	London - Werewolves In London Speaking of cheesy 80s metal, this song "Werewolf in London" by London, was suggested by This Episode. The song is fairly typical of this genre: loud guitars and the lead singer can really scream. Incidentally, in doing research for this American band, I found out that there is a British band also called London. But they are better suited for this name, seeing as they do live in London...
Harry and the Potters - My Teacher is a Werewolf Harry and the Potters was previously mentioned on W♥M. I've never read any of the books, but I get the impression that one of Harry's teacher was turned in a Werewolf? This information is what I've derived from the song. As for Werewolves in Harry Potter, apparently there's only three in the series: Remus Lupin, unnamed character, and Fenrir Greyback. I've deduced that Lupin is the teacher by day and wolf at night.	Jon Spencer Blues Explosion - She Said I didn't know about Jon Spencer Blues Explosion's "She Said" until Life in Ruins mentioned it. Listening to the lyrics, it's obvious now. The "She" in this song are words spoken by a Gypsy, who warns that the singer is a Werewolf: "you ain't a man no more, you're outta control. These wolf bites gonna find out what its like to lose your soul."
Scary Bitches - Werewolf Scary Bitches has a song called "Werewolf". Beyond that, I don't really know much about this British band. They seem to have a huge following in Germany, and are drenched in Goth-Rock.	La Union - Lobo Hombre En Paris La Union's song "Lobo Hombre in Paris" is a Spanish song, sent in by Cristina. Since I don't understand Spanish, I just thought of that movie "An American Werewolf in Paris" - the sequel to "An American Werewolf in London". But I am assuming this song pre-date the 1997 film?
the Dillinger Escape Plan - Sunshine the Werewolf The Dillinger Escape Plan's "Sunshine the Werewolf" is LOUD. It's too loud and hardcore and screamo for me to really enjoy. I figure if I was ever at one of their live show that I would go deaf instantly. However, before you start to turn down the volume, two minutes into the song and there is a nice break in the song. I still can't figure what the song has to do with Werewolves?	The Born Losers - Werewolves on Wheels Cristina also sent in this song "Werewolf on Wheels" by The Born Losers. I had a hell (haha) of a time looking for the album art for this album. It's a various artist album called Halloween Party. I had even a harder time finding any information about The Born Losers. This song is just an instrumental. I guess it's best imagined if you saw a hairy Werewolf on a motorcyle!
Metallica - Of Wolf and Man Metallica's song "Of Wolf and Man" is essentially about a Werewolf. The song is loud and includes a some crazy guitar noodles half way into the song (this part makes me think of hair bands from the 80s!). My favorite line from the song is: "The company we keep/Roaming the land while you sleep".	The Browns - American Werewolf in Calgary The (Motherf******) Browns are a punchy powerpunk band - similar to Blink 182. I thought this song was very poppy/fun band, and as their song title suggests, they really are based in Calgary, Canada. They're currently releasing their music on Meter Records.
Southern Culture On The Skids - Werewolf I have to say that I have rather enjoyed this song by Southern Culture on the Skids (SCOTS). The song simply is called "Werewolf". They kind of remind me of surf rock and has a very 70s feel to it (for a band that's in the mid-80s to 90s).	Cat Power - Werewolf Finally, remember that Cat Power song that was requested by a reader so long ago? Guess what? It's about a Werewolf! An interesting note about this song is that it's a cover! Originally written by Michael Hurley. Apparently Chan Marshall is a huge Hurley fan as she's also covered two of his other songs, "Sweedeedee" and "Troubled Water".
