Has Spring sprung?
Maybe not fully, as temps are still seesawing, but baseball season has started, and NE Kansas is in full tornado awareness mode, so it’s all pretty close.
Easter Week slows things towards week’s end, but there’s still several shows worth checking out.
(Despite some health mandates loosening up, several artists are still requiring for entry, so check with the venue and/or better to assume vaccination proof is required)
Here’s what’s happening in the Kansas City/Lawrence area for the Second Week of APRIL:
Santana, T-Mobile Center. $29.50-$129.50
Always a positive force, the Rock Hall of Famer is out on his Miracles and Blessings Tour promoting the collaborative album of the same name, which was released March 18 on BMG. Vinyl collectors can find the blue, white and yellow exclusive LP at Target and the legend is always inspiring to see live.
The English Beat w/M80s, Knuckleheads. $20
Sooner or later, one should catch this legendary UK Ska band live, even if it’s basically Dave Wakeling and friends at this point. We caught them last in 2017 and thought co-vocalist King Schascha gave them renewed energy and spirit.
Kyle, Bottleneck. $29 (note Venue Change)
Pedro the Lion w/ Oceanator, RecordBar. $22
The David Bazan-led band starts their tour in KC, in support of latest LP, Havasu, their first new music since pre-pandemic 2019.
Openers Oceanator have new music too, a sophomore album called Nothing’s Ever Fine, (on Polyvinyl Records) a title which we can all relate to, after the last two years. It’s actually an indie rock project of Brooklyn singer/guitarist Elise Okusami and has gotten some buzz from Stereogum, Noisey, and Spin.
An Officer and a Gentleman, Kauffman Center, April 12-17, $73-$125
Taking you up where we belong, this first national tour of the romantic story based on the film (Richard Gere) will play locally April 12-17. Expect to hear plenty of familiar 80’s classics in the musical score, and you’ll know why ladies like a man in uniform after seeing this story live.
Senses Fail w We Came as Romans, Granada-Lawrence, CANCELED
Robyn Hitchcock (solo), Knuckleheads

Robyn Hitchcock (solo), Knuckleheads. $25
Catch the prolific UK singer-songwriter in an intimate solo performance of classics and maybe some deep cuts, as his last release was outtakes and rarities. Throw in a Soft Boys song or two and maybe a cover, and it’s a full evening. We last caught him live back in 2018.
Aly & AJ, The Truman. $28.50-$55
You’re probably familiar with these sisters either from their music or perhaps acting career (any iZombie fans out there?) , and they’ve returned to the road in support of a forth studio album. The pair made unlikely recent news, was when their tour bus was caught in a fatal crossfire of gun play in Sacramento but were unhurt.
Travis Tritt, Topeka Perf. Arts Center, $35
Still causing t-r-o-u-b-l-e, the longtime country singer has a new album, Set in Stone, and has plenty of hits in his holster as well as has been playing Hank Jr and Charlie Daniels covers live.
John Waters, Liberty Hall-Lawrence, $35
The celebrated director comes to town with his live show, as part of the Free State Film Festival, a week-long event filled with film screenings, live music, discussions, and community events.
Wade Bowen, Granada-Lawrence, $15-$17
Greyson Chance, Bottleneck-Lawrence, CANCELED
Bob Moses, Granada- Lawrence, $26-30
Actually, a duo of two electronic musicians from Vancouver, including the son of Jim Vallance, one of Bryan Adams’ main collaborators. The Silence in Between is their latest, just released March 4 and they’ve snuck in an INXS cover as a recent encore song live.
Snail Mail, Liberty Hall

Indie rocker Lindsey Jordan has returned, in support of 2021’s second album, Valentine (on Matador Records) and just also released, “Adore You”, a non-album demo from those same sessions. Venerable outlets like USA Today and the NY Times put that album as a Top Three of the year, and she’s also been working in a Smashing Pumpkins cover into her live set.
Philadelphia band Joy Again is scheduled to open.
Lucinda Williams, Knuckleheads. Sold Out
Previously postponed (maybe twice), the show is justifiably sold out. 2020’s Good Souls Better Angels was nominated for Best Americana album and was inducted last year into the Austin City Limits Hall of Fame (what took so long?)
Bezhod Abduraimov, 1900 Building-Mission Woods, $10-$30
Intimate rare solo performance by this celebrated Uzbeki classical pianist who first made a splash with a 2015 Carnegie Hall debut. His latest recording celebrates Debussy, Chopin, and Mussorgsky but expect other composers at this performance, with program details here.
Eliane Elias, Folly. $20-$55
Attila with He Is Legend, Islander and Crown Magnetar, Granada. $22-$25
MSSV Main Steam Stop Valve (Mike Baggetta, Stephen Hodges, Mike Watt), recordBar, $13
The newest experimental rock incarnation from Minuteman bassist, well known guitarist, and studio (incl Tom Waits) drummer.
Does anybody remember when Watt toured in 1995 for the Ball-Hog or Tugboat solo album? Eddie Vedder opened and Foo Fighters were Watt’s backing band.

Martin Hayes, 1900 Building. $25-$40
Local H, recordBar, $15
The bound for the floor Illinois rockers are back, in support of 2020’s LIFERS and a quarantine mix-tape, and is still anchored by bandleader Scott Lucas. Any band that encores with a song called “High-Fiving MF” is ok by us.
