Los Angeles-based art pop artist Angel Deradoorian, otherwise known as Deradoorian, will be postponing the release of Find The Sun to September 18, 2020 (originally set for May 2020), due to the complications from COVID-19. All upcoming tour dates are also indefinitely postponed.

Los Angeles-based Bad Suns recently shared new song called “I’m Not Having Any Fun,” a B-side from the band’s latest release Mystic Truth.

According to the vocalist Christo Bowman, “’I’m Not Having Any Fun’ came to life in the spring of 2018, during one of our afternoon jam sessions in the living room of the house we all lived in together while writing the Mystic Truth album. I wanted to inject humor into the lyrics, as the song weaves through the story of a relationship gone awry in the internet age. We ultimately decided to hang onto this one for later, as it didn’t quite match the tone of the rest of the album, and I’m glad we did because now feels like the right time for it to have its day in the sun, even if that sunlight’s just coming through the window.”

Before the Coronavirus pandemic, we caught Bad Suns live in May 2014 and Oct 2015 and noted, “Another Southern California band, Bad Suns, played next, in support of their Vagrant Records EP, Transpose, with full-length, Language & Perspective, due out in late June. The quartet’s anthemic sound on songs like ‘Cardiac Arrest’ and EP closer, ‘20 Years’ seemed to connect with the younger audience, who will have another chance to see these up-and-comers, as they return to headline the 7th Street Entry on July 9th, as part of a larger showcasing tour.””

The Sun and Her Scorch is the title to the forthcoming album from Canadian band Dizzy (set for release on July 31 via Royal Mountain Records). The new record is the follow-up to their 2018 Juno Awarding-winning debut Baby Teeth.

The album’s lead single, “Sunflower,” was released earlier, and critics like, Stereogum, proclaimed it as, “a pleasingly vibrant sound reminiscent of Maggie Rogers and Soccer Mommy.”

We saw Dizzy in Oct 2017 and noted that their name is too common: “Ontario’s Dizzy (with dreamy vocals from Katie M) opened up the show. The 11-track album features soothing lo-fi, intricate melodies influenced by jazz, hip-hop, and R&B production… and the band was going on tour to promote the record - unfortunately, because of the Coronavirus crisis, the band is putting touring on hiatus at the moment. “Due to circumstances outside of our control and for the safety and health of people, I regret to inform you that the Orion Sun shows during the time frame of April 22-May 13th have been postponed. JOESEF joesefjoesefjoesef.com Scotland’s Joesef recently shared his new single, “The Sun is Up Forever”. Joesef talked about his jangling indie-pop song, “I wrote this song about a month ago after talking to my mum about how relationships affect you in every corner of your life, right down to the way you carry yourself. My dad was a bit of a bastard to her and us, and she said it’s something that never really leaves her, but after 20 years she’s learned to let go of the grief a little. It’s from her perspective, and mine. It’s about leaving a dark part of your life behind you. This tune is for her.” He has some upcoming concert dates, however, given the COVID-19 situation, I’m not entirely sure if those dates may happen. All that can change when we find a cure or vaccine for this virus.

BJORN RYDHOG bjornrydhog.se Swedish musician and singer-songwriter Bjorn Rydhog (from Malmö), released a new single called “Give Me Sunshine”. The indie pop track was inspired by Nick Drake, The Beach Boys and Bon Iver. Rydhog said, “After five inspiring months in India a productive period of songwriting began for me back home in Malmö. The new songs were built in the style of my previous release, but with a more refined and varied sound. The process to create this EP has been an emotional awakening and also a summary of this challenging decade, where I have been looking for my “grown-up” voice.”

Legendary shoegazing band Ride will be headlining Mill City Nights next Tuesday, September 29th. After the British band broke up in 1996, founding band member Andy Bell went on to play bass for Oasis. Of course, Oasis broke up and Bell moved to Beady Eye (basically Oasis without Noel Gallagher), but we ultimately know what happened to Beady Eye....

So this is really the perfect time for Ride to reunite! Fans who never caught the band in the 90s will finally get a chance to hear Ride live next Tuesday.

We caught Stereolab's Lætitia Sadier on tour in 2012 at the defunct 400 Bar. Recently, we were lucky enough to have caught her with Helado Nego in March 2015... but she didn't do any of her songs.

That's about to change, as Sadier will be headlining Icehouse next Tuesday with Deradoorian.

We've seen Angel Deradoorian a few times now. She recently released her solo debut album The Expanding Flower Planet on Anticon Records. As we previously mentioned, the former former bassist and vocalist for Dirty Projectors has been compared to Björk.

After watching the Superbowl with some friends at Manning's, I strolled over to the Republic New Orleans to catch Zola Jesus with openers Deradoorian.

Deradoorian

One of the opening members, Angel Deradoorian was the former bassist and co-vocalist of Dirty Projectors. Only caught a few tracks, but what I heard, it was solid. Two female dueling vocals playing keys and xylophone/drums. Favorite track was "Carry the Deed". Everybody needs to check this video out, it's very unique and Angel is absolutely gorgeous!

A darker version of Florence and the Machine is the typical quick to judge label on Zola Jesus. There is so much variety and dynamic to her songs no one should be quick to make comparisons because she is so unique. Her voice carries strong to an almost London Grammar-type level but has this obscure electronic trance that hits out of nowhere along with and incredible brass sound from the trombone. The strongest comparison to Zola is Karen Marie Ørsted (otherwise know as MØ) out of Denmark. Similar to Florence Welch, both singers are constantly flying around the stage waving their arms and giving an eye-grabbing stage performance.

Setlist

Nika Roza Danilova (aka Zola Jesus) started the night with three songs from her 2014 release entitled Taiga. Three of my favorite tracks, I might add, "Taiga", "Dangerous Days", and "Dust". After those songs, the crowd was quickly drawn in a trance. I was simply in awe and couldn't stop dancing after my favorite track "Dangerous Days", that song has been on repeat for a week now as I'm clearly a hardcore fan.

Half of her set was from the new record, and one of the best moments of the show was when she came out into the crowd gave me a double high five then continued to the bar counter and showed us her moves. Her two-song encore were both tracks from her 2011 release, song titles ("Vessel" and "Skin").

I've been of fan of Zola the past four years and have missed two of her shows because I was out of town or sick. Her fourth release Conatus came out in 2011 was when I first started listing to her and instantly became a fan. That material was extremely dark with the drum and bass build up. She seems to have really grown the last three years into a more well-rounded artist, mixing more melodic sounds, horns, even just a true dance type vibe to her music.

This artist clearly deserves more attention and should be just as big as soon to be rival Florence and the Machine.

Fun fact: Zola Jesus has the one of the best-looking concert T-Shirts you can buy. My other favorites include Bombay Bicycle Club and The Maccabees.

Russian/American Nika Roza Danilova, or otherwise known as Zola Jesus, stopped by the Cedar Cultural Center in Minneapolis, as part of her Taiga tour.

Deradoorian Sisters

Ex-Dirty Projectors' Angel Deradoorian opened up the show. We previously saw Deradoorian with another Russian/American artist Olga Bell and noted that she had more modern "Kate Bush-like siren hums and wails", but also produced some Armenian-inspired music.

This time around, Angel brought her sister along for this tour, the two often would harmonize or dueling vocals. Their thirty minute set consists of some tribal-inspired percussions, echo effects, and a few unconventional instruments. You get the impression that the two could make anything into an instrument of music.

Zola Jesus

The story of Zola Jesus is quite interesting, she was raised in Wisconsin, among the 100+ acres of forest, and spent her youth insolated without internet and interaction with other people her age. She worked with a vocal coach when she was young, and by 10, she was performing opera. So what you see at her live shows are years of dancing performance and vocal perfection.

The stage setup had unique stage light satellite with one humongous geometric-shaped in the background. The partial paper, partial plastic shapes seemed very DIY to me, and I can picture Danilova hand making and designing these things herself.

Zola Jesus' bruised knees

In a typical Zola Jesus show, you can see Danilova violently dancing and trashing. It's not uncommon to find her climbing on things (for this show, she was on top of the Cedar's house piano). Sometime, her violent dancing caused her to accidentally fall to her knees - which I guess happened so often that she'll sometime post photos of her bruised knees. Having seen her on stage, I can tell you it looked painful. But who am I to argue with art?

The rest of the band was tight, I got the feeling that they probably play the same set list every night. Between songs, there were often pre-recorded loops... and sometime with some strong trumpet intros. Musically, it sounded like a lost Bjork album... at least the music sounding like it was not from America.

Setlist

Danilova hardly spoke, but that's expected with these tight sets. The most words she spoke was before "Lawless", she said, "I have a new record out called Taiga. That's it...."

And, of course, one look at the set list, you can see that they played basically the entire Taiga (leaving out only two songs). The middle part of her set were songs from Stridulum II and the encore was taken from her third album Conatus.

Possibly my favorite moment in the show was the a cappella intro to "Nail". At that moment, the entire audience went absolutely quiet, clinging on to every note.

Welcome to the Edge.

The word Krai in Russian refers to the “edge, brink, border, or frontier”, and that is what Dirty Projectors member Olga Bell chose to sonically interpret, as the world premiere of Bell’s nine-song cycle was performed last week at the Walker Art Center, as part of the continuing Liquid Music Series, which is co-presented with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra and the American Composers Forum.

Bell, and cohort Angel Deradoorian (formerly of Dirty Projectors) and a ten-piece ensemble presented two sets of avant-garde music, keeping in theme with the mission statement of the Liquid Music Series, “to expand the world of classical music through innovative new projects, boundary-defying artists, and unique presentation formats”.

Deradoorian began the evening with a 30 min. set of newer compositions, including the opening ‘Duduk for Two Voices’, a stark new acapella piece performed with Bell, inspired by the Armenian instrument of her heritage.

Eschewing selections from her 2009 EP, Mind Raft (Love Pump United), the vocalist/keyboardist instead unveiled lush new works that brought both a modern sound, and tip of the hat to the traditional folk base of her family’s culture, with Bell leading the background vocalists in Kate Bush-like siren hums and wails. The soothing closer, ‘Violet Minded’, with steady but slow percussion, crept quietly then transformed into a revved-up crescendo, to end the set with flourish.

After a brief intermission, the ensemble re-appeared, with Bell taking over the lead role, to debut the 45 min. sonic love letter to her Russian homeland, backed by the sweeping, sometimes fragmented visuals of artist Alejandro Crawford (who has previously worked with MGMT).

The entire performance, deemed Origin/Outcome meant to celebrate the “human vernacular- the music to which we dance, eat, grieve and live”, and was inspired by the country where Moscow-born Bell spent her early childhood.

Considered a mosaic of impressions rather than any political or music-ethnographic statement, each song in the cycle takes geographic inspiration from Russia’s nine regional frontiers. The divergent accompanying visuals both gave the audience a look into life there, and enhanced the performed live soundtrack.

Entirely sung in Russian, it was sometimes difficult to truly understand Bell’s vision during the performance, and while there was a translation printed in the program, it was dark enough in the hushed theater, that following along was not a possibility.

Drawing on Russian folk traditions and the modern indie-pop that bands like her Dirty Projectors favor, the past/present dichotomy was best served in second movement, ‘Altai Krai’, which featured a drone-like, low throat-singing vocal.

Bell even collaborated with her mother (who was in the audience) on a few songs, including ‘Perm Krai’, lyrics taken from a traditional Cossack ballad amidst some manic drumming and soaring background vocals, including Deradoorian’s.

The audience was in rapt attention throughout, and respectful of the performers, staying silent except for the occasional sneeze or cough. The acoustics in the venerable McGuire Theater were perfectly suited to the performance, the room crisp enough to hear even the slight clink of Bell’s metal water bottle as she set it down between songs.

Stage lighting was kept to a minimum, putting the attention on the screen visuals and ensemble as a whole, rather than particular details.

Bell, who began nervously (probably due to its first performance and all the family and friends in the audience) seemed to settle in with fourth movement, ‘Stavropol Krai’, a mid-tempo’d song with traditional text anchored by electronic and traditional jazz-like percussion.

London multi-instrumentalist Tom Vek, who collaborates with Bell in the side-project, Nothankyou, was initially scheduled to perform as well, but unfortunately was unable to make it, and would have no doubt, rounded out the compositions even more.

Closing pieces ‘Khabarovsk Krai’ and ‘Kamchatka Krai’ were also steeped in traditional themes with a modern sensibility; the former beginning with a raw door knocking-like percussion to be followed by a pulsing electronic beat, the latter more folkish and indigenous sounding with its low singing style and sometimes disjointed vocal and percussive elements.

Highly personal and very different from her 2011 solo debut Diamonite under the name Bell, Olga Bell succeeded in paying homage to her Russian and Alaskan upbringing through song, while stretching the musical boundaries of her own sound.

While the piece might have been better served as a continuous performance with better transitions and electronic percussion slightly dialed down in the live mix, it did bring a taste of the Russian hinterlands into a Minnesota audience that can definitely relate to any harsh and cold elements.

Engaging, sonically interesting, and knocking down boundaries associated with traditional classical music, score another win for the Liquid Music Series.

The acclaimed Liquid Music Series from Saint Paul’s Chamber Orchestra continues its second season, bound and determined to “expand the world of classical music through innovative new projects, boundary-defying artists, and unique presentation formats”.

And that is exactly what we’ve witnessed, the handful of times W♥M has been on hand to witness what is no doubt the most curiously eclectic and always-interesting music series in the Upper Midwest.

This Thursday welcomes Moscow-born, Brooklyn-based composer/performer Olga Bell (best known for her work with Dirty Projectors) as she world premieres Krai, a nine-movement song cycle described as a sonic love letter to her Russian homeland; perfect and timely with the Sochi games in progress and Valentine’s holiday approaching.

The two-set evening will begin with an intimate collaborative set by Bell and special guest vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Angel Deradoorian, to be followed by Krai.

Expect echoes of traditional folk music, alongside modern electronica with accompanying projections by video artist Alejandro Crawford, who has worked with MGMT. “Origin/Outcome is a celebration of the hot-blooded human vernacular—the music to which we dance, eat, grieve, and revel.” ....sounds like a sweetheart of a show.

Bassist, singer, and sometime keyboarder, Angel Deradoorian, simply known as Deradoorian, from the New York-based band, Dirty Projectors, released her debut EP Mind Raft yesterday.

This eccentric mix of harmonies and melodies is interesting, but it seems to me that she's experimenting and trying to find her own direction. I mean, it's probably hard to break out from the shadow of heady ex-Yale student Dave Longstreth, but I think Deradoorian is doing a good job on her solo debut EP.

"High Road" is the most interesting and dense song, with ton of layers and odd sound effects from deep pounding percussions to quick/half-played violin bursts, but it follows one of the more simple "Weed Jam", a song with a very harmonic vocals and drums song.

You can see her R&B influences as you listen to "You Carry the Deed", however the appearance of the horns towards the end shifts it into a strange song.

My favorite song on the EP is "Moon". This song is just great. It's simple acoustic-playing with Deradoorian's descriptive lyrics and celtic-ish singing makes the song sounds like it's from middle-ages.

These are serious songs - despite the fact that based on her 'space pictures, Deradoorian looks like quite a lot of fun. I mean, what do you expect from someone who wants to be the next John Oates?

Mind Raft EP is out now on Lovepump United Records, I have listed Dirty Projectors' tour dates, as I am assuming she's going to be playing bass live with them. It's interesting to note that they are going to be playing with Bjork, on the 8^th, because they have long admired her (they covered her song "Hyperballad" last year).
