The co-headlining tour of Ryan Traster and Newski will be stopping by the Turf Club in St Paul on April 13th.

The press release of the year, for me, was for Newski’s disastrous unlicensed pop-up concert at Chipotle.

“We played an unlicensed show at Chipotle and everyone hated us,” says NEWSKI.

Everything that could go wrong did, for Wisconsin’s jangle pop rock outfit NEWSKI on their spontaneous and unlicensed performance at Chipotle; the guitar fell out of tune, no free burritos were rewarded, and nearly everyone in the place was pissed off.

I thought it was funny enough that I shared it with the W♥M team. Even if the story was made up or overly exaggerated, it made us notice and we like a band with a sense of humor.

I did some digging, and apparently this trio features Steve “Mr Bicep” Vorass on drums, Sean “Tubs” Anderson on 4-string, and led by Brett Newski on guitars and vocals.

Funny enough, we have seen Brett before, at the Violent Femmes show in July 2016, which we described, “Brett Newski opened up the show with his improv-ish songs. Very fun guy, really witty. Highlight of his set was getting an audience member to help play harmonica during ‘In Between Exits’. He ended his brief 30-min set with ‘D.I.Y.’... and newfound fans in the front started to sing along to his catchy lyrics, “I’m D.I.Y., I’m punk as f***. Don’t need your money, I don’t want your love.” Newski also tend to swap out lyrics to make his song more personal and timely. For example, he name dropped The Replacements in the mixtape lyrics on ‘D.I.Y.’”

Nashville’s Fruit Bats (Eric D. Johnson) is currently on tour in support of A River Running to Your Heart. The record will be available April 14 via Merge Records.

“Over the years there's been a lot of geography in my music, a lot of landscapes,” Johnson says. “Sometimes the places are real, sometimes they're emotional. I've always liked the idea of songs and albums that exist in a continuum with one another. I'm not talking about some kind of deep series of concept albums, mind you. More like the idea that my songs are all pretty much tributaries of the same river. Which makes a lot of metaphorical sense because my path has been long and winding and often slow and muddy. But always moving towards the sea…. I guess you could say this album is the one where I took all that emotional geography and kind of mapped it out.”

We saw Fruit Bats in Oct 2015 and said, “Johnson’s honeyed voice was perfect, rivaled only by the dreamy strum of Barker’s guitar and gentle whirr of Klippert’s keyboards. Folk-pop gems like fan-favorite “When You Love Somebody” (from Mouthfuls) saw many people singing the famously quirky lyric, “When you love somebody and bite your tongue all you get is a mouthful of blood.” Blood, bats, love and folk - I couldn’t have asked for a better precursor to Halloween.”

GRAMMY Award-winning artist Aoife O’Donovan will be playing her live recording of Bruce Springsteen’s 1982 album Nebraska live at the Turf Club, this April 14th, 2023.

O’Donovan loves Nebraska and explains, “It was this concept album in a way that was just so natural, it was so unforced. Springsteen found these characters and sort of placed them. It’s almost like the American Songbook or something. I just love the record; from the opening moments to the final cut, ‘Reason to Believe,’ it has this beautiful arc. It’s almost novelistic in that way.”

We saw Aoife O'Donovan in Nov 2015 and wrote, “Opening up the show, was Crooked Still's Aoife O'Donovan playing some folky/storytelling songs from her latest solo album Fossils, including set opening song "Lay My Burden Down", "Oh, Mama", and "Beekeeper". She played a couple of new songs, like "Hornets", which she said she played recently when she hosted (along with Sara Watkins and Sarah Jarosz) at the A Prairie Home Companion show in October 2015. ”

We saw Trapper Schoepp in May 2017 and said, “As a former resident of Green Bay, I was charmed to learn that Trapper Schoepp’s newest EP was written all about the city’s Bay Beach, an east-side amusement park nestled on the bay that happens to be celebrating 125 years of existence this year. Schoepp treated the Turf crowd to a performance of Bay Beach Amusement Park in its entirety with help from Shades bandmates Justin Krol on drums, Quinn Scharber on guitar, brother Tanner on bass/vocals and a 3-piece horn section lovingly called “The Horns”.”

The band announced an “Acoustic” tour in support of their new album A Productive Cough. …

There was a slight problem getting into the venue for the band had yet to provide the guest list. The reason: Titus Andronicus had yet to arrive. No problem. The staff at the Turf Club rolled with the moment and let me in as the gathering crowd of people ordered another round and the opening act stood at the front of the bar sipping Campari.

What’s nice about the Turf Club is its neighborhood feel, a place to hang out with friends while the band you came to see is still making its way across town.

Titus Andronicus did arrive with winter coats and musical equipment and soon Country Westerns took the stage.

Based out of Nashville with Joseph Plunket on vocals and lead guitar and Brian Kotzur leading the way on drums, they can best be described as combination of country, blues, western and soul fueled by the speed and intensity of punk rock.

Country Westerns played from their 2020 self-titled debut album with hard charging songs like “Anytime” and “TV Light.” The album was highlighted by Pitchfork as one of the 35 Best Rock Albums of that year. A sophomore album entitled Forgive the City on Fat Possum Records is also slated to be released later this year.

After Country Westerns finished their set, Titus Andronicus started the process of setting up their equipment, tuning their instruments and working with the sound engineer to get the right levels. Normally, the pre-concert routine is done before the crowd arrives but the audience was already there to see Chris Wilson tighten his drums, Liam Betson tune his lead guitars, R.J. Betson work the mic levels and front man Patrick Sticklers hustle between the dressing room and the stage.

From New Jersey Titus Andronicus lifted their name from the Shakespearian play about a Roman General who has a whole lot of revenge killing in mind, and so the band kicked off their set with “My Mother Is Going to Kill Me” which Pitchfork described as “… a nourishing slab of hard-rock beef.” The song is the lead song on their latest album The Will to Live, which was inspired/shaped by the unexpected death of former keyboardist and cousin to Stickles, Matt Miller.

They also played “(I’m) Screwed” and “Give Me Grief” from their new album before Stickles addressed the elephant in the room. The reason for their tardiness was due to issues with their touring van, issues that involved a three-hour delay in the suburb of Maplewood in which a new battery was replaced by Tim from AAA. Tim happened to be in the crowd and got a special shout-out from Stickles and a roar from the crowd for helping deliver the band.

Then Stickles said it was Saturday night and he knew they crowd came to hear the classics from their previous albums. In fact, Titus Andronicus’ setlist is a setlist, meaning that the songs heard at St. Paul are the same ones played in Madison, WI the night before. Or as Stickles told the Spokesman Review: “… I never want to just play the weirdest deep cuts in a place like Great Falls, MT…”

So Titus Andronicus cranked out the hits like “Four Score and Seven”, “A More Perfect Union” and “Titus Andronicus Forever” and the crowd soon turned the small neighborhood venue into a mosh pit for the closing songs.

Three magical words- Super! Bowl! Champions!

Ok, the big game’s over and getting back to music, this week is all about The Boss! Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band are finally back on the road, though not without some drama, as several members have very recently had to sit out, due to Covid. Let’s hope the outbreak is behind them and all members are back on stage this weekend.

The biggest avant-garde secret is that Laurie Anderson is in town with Filharmonie Brno for a unique tribute to Amelia Earhart, and there are also several good club shows this week.

Let’s take look at the Kansas City/Lawrence KS metro musical happenings from February 15th-20th.

WEDNESDAY FEB 15

Bruce Cockburn's 50th Anniversary Concert, Liberty Hall- Lawrence, $39-$59

Delayed by the pandemic, this special tour is back on tracks and playing to appreciative fans. Cockburn has released 34 albums and his songs have been covered by many artists including Jimmy Buffet, kd Lang, Barenaked Ladies, Jerry Garcia, Anne Murray, Elbow, Judy Collins, Chet Atkins, and more. The 50th Anniversary shows promise songs from each decade that he’s made records in: 60’s, 70’s, 80’s, 90’s, 2000’s, 2010’s and the 2020’s!

The Dip, Madrid Theatre, $30

The Dip is a pop, rhythm and blues band that was formed in 2013 by jazz music students at the UW-Seattle. The band combines a typical pop instrumentation with a 3-part horn section. They have released three full-length albums as well as two instrumental Eps with latest being last year’s Sticking With it (on Dualtone Records). Live, they’ve recently snuck in their unique version of Black Sabbath’s “Paranoid”.

Noah Kahan w Jack Van Cleaf, The Truman, SOLD OUT

Newest releases the Cape Elizabeth EP and full-length Stick Season are both so critically acclaimed, many feel the Vermont folk pop singer-songwriter is on the verge of breaking it big(ger) with most shows (including this one) on this run being sold-out. Anyone enamored by the Mumford-like big folk sound will need to somehow find a way into this one.

THURSDAY FEB 16

Brian Posehn, Comedy Club of KC, Feb 16, 17, 18, $20 / $30

The comedian/actor/writer is in town for a multi-night stand, so plenty of chances to catch him live. Known for specials "25x2" and "Criminally Posehn" and his podcast, Nerd Poker, he’s been in numerous films and TV shows including The Five-Year Engagement, Lloyd the Conqueror and The Sarah Silverman Program.

Cody Canada w Rob Leines, Knuckleheads, $20

Expect a heaping helping of Cross Canadian Ragweed songs as well as solo material from their former rock/alt-country Oklahoma-based lead singer. He fronts The Departed and newest release is last year’s Soul Gravy.

FRIDAY FEB 17

Niko Moon w Dylan Schneider, The Truman, $20-$40

Out on his Ain’t No Better Place Tour, the country-pop singer is also currently writing and recording the follow-up to his 2021 debut album Good Time, named after his double Platinum, No. 1 hit single. Also, he recently welcomed a daughter, Lily, with his wife / frequent collaborator, Anna. Together they composed “I Can’t Wait to Love You” in anticipation of Lily’s arrival. Live, he’s been working in Tim McGraw, Zac Brown, and Travis Tritt covers.

Thy Art is Murder, Granada- Lawrence, $25-$30

Australian deathcore band out on their Decade of Hate Tour, it’s a packed evening with the lineup including Kublai Khan TX, Undeath, I AM, and Justice For The Damned, so an early door time.

Rodney Carrington, Feb 17-18 , Ameristar, $65+

Carrington is known for the witty and sarcastic humor that he is able to blend into various mediums of stand-up, music, and short films. He integrates his country roots seamlessly into the essence of his demeanor and writing style, playing around the world as one of the top 10 highest-grossing touring comedians for the past two decades.

SATURDAY FEB 18

Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band, T-Mobile Center. $63.50-$403.50

Despite high prices and low-ticket availability and a current fight with Covid, Springsteen and his full band have returned to the road for the first time in North America in seven years. Little Steven, Patti Scialfa and Soozie Tyrell have all missed the recent TX dates and the setlist spans decades, but is heavier on material from Born to Run, Darkness on the Edge of Town, Born in the USA and the more recent Letter to You albums. Whichever way, expect a marathon and fun evening from a legend and one of the best bands working.

Filharmonie Brno With Dennis Russell Davies, and Laurie Anderson, $43.50-$83.50

Take the ultimate flight of fancy with iconic creative pioneer Laurie Anderson as she channels Atchison, KS’ own Amelia Earhart in an expansive work for Filharmonie Brno under the baton of renowned American conductor Dennis Russell Davies. Earhart’s own radio transmissions, diaries, and news clippings are used in Anderson’s sonic score that show off the technical capabilities of Helzberg Hall.

The roots of the Filharmonie Brno go way back to the 1870s when young Leoš Janáček endeavored to establish a Czech symphony orchestra in Brno and the setlist will consist of work by Antonin Dvořák and Bohuslav Martinů as well as the Laurie Anderson piece.

SUNDAY FEB 19

Winterlude: Trent Austin Quartet, Polsky Theatre. $17-$35

Trumpeter, artist, and educator Trent Austin plays jazz classics with the influences of classical and contemporary music. A prodigy, Austin performed at the opening of Euro-Disney and was a featured performer at the 1992 Montreux Jazz Festival and later played with the likes of Tony Bennett, Natalie Cole, Joe Williams, Clark Terry, Jack Jones, and numerous others.

He was a trumpet professor at the University of Southern Maine for nine years and now maintains an active teaching studio providing trumpet and jazz improv lessons in Kansas City.

We♥KC- Kansas City / Lawrence KS- 2023 Concert Preview

2022 marked a full return to live music after some two years of basically nothing, and then it seemed sometimes like everyone in every band, was back on the road, so much so that you often had to pick between several worthy acts.

Let’s take a look into 2023 for the Kansas City / Lawrence metro as to what’s already been announced, in the hopes that you can start saving those concert pennies, put a reminder on your calendar, etc. Many of the larger shows have announced already, as any big production needs a long lead time, but look for many great club and smaller theater shows, to still announce, closer-to-date.

In the Midwest, the concert season seems to spike in Spring (mid-March means SXSW in Austin), over the Summer (more outdoor shows, festivals, etc), in early August (as bands travel to and from Lollapalooza in Chicago and headline shows of their own), and in early Fall (September means Fall Tours and college kids back, October is called Rocktober for a reason and also has acts stopping on their way to / from Austin City Limits Fest in TX).

Now in its tenth year, The Belgian Waffle Ride (BWR) takes place in Lawrence, KS for the first time, benefiting the Steve Tilford Foundation, named for the multi-award winning mountain biking legend, and its kickoff concert has moved outside to 8^th and Mass. downtown under the stars featuring the Michael Franti Trio and Maria the Mexican.

The BWR provides professional and amateur cyclists the opportunity to ride over up to a 111.11-mile route throughout the northeast region of Kansas and yes, there will be waffles, Belgian ales, and frites available along with a silent auction, vendor fair, and related weekend activities.

NOVEMBER 8 – STAND UP FOR HEROES– New York City

Home - Bob Woodruff Foundation

Bruce Springsteen, Jon Stewart, Jim Gaffigan, Nikki Glaser and many others are set to perform at the 15^th annual Stand Up for Heroes benefit event, which supports the Bob Woodruff Foundation’s efforts to help wounded service members, veterans and their families, at Alice Tully Hall at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts.

Also appearing on the bill are comic and musical performances by Nate Bargatze, Grace Gaustad, Sing Harlem, Donnell Rawlings, and more. Springsteen appears almost every year, and has even auctioned off a motorcycle and dinner featuring his “mom’s lasagna.”

NOVEMBER 12- TIPPING POINT FEAT. CHAKA KHAN –New Orleans

Giving to Tulane - Tipping Point 2021

The fifth annual Tipping Point benefit concert, presented by Tulane University returns to The Fillmore New Orleans on Nov. 12, headlined by the legendary eight-time GrammyⓇ winner singer, songwriter Chaka Khan and also features numerous other artists including Marcus King, Trombone Shorty, Son Little, Jackie Greene and George Porter Jr.

Chaka Khan remains one of our live favorites and we caught her in concert, most recently in 2018 and again in 2019 alongside Michael McDonald. Proceeds from the concert will fund scholarships that will enable qualified students to attend Tulane University regardless of their economic background.

DECEMBER 1- WORLD AIDS DAY CONCERT –Los Angeles

AHF Presents: World AIDS Day - The LA Revival - The LA Forum

Christina Aguilera and Jennifer Hudson headline a Free AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) concert at The Forum in Los Angeles on December 1^st, hosted by entertainer Randy Rainbow.

The concert will be produced with longtime AHF partner, multi-EmmyⓇ and TonyⓇ award winner Debbie Allen and also feature a performance by young students from her Debbie Allen Dance Academy.

Both headlining women are truly vocally gifted and hearing their range live is an exceptional experience– we were lucky enough to see Hudson at a previous benefit concert in 2018.

Sen. Bernie Sanders will also be honored with AHF’s Lifetime Achievement Award. “Forty years ago, AIDS was first recognized by the CDC, and 40 years later we have lost millions of lives. I'm committed to continue to do my part in bringing awareness to HIV/AIDS, and I encourage you to do the same." Sanders said.

DECEMBER 10 – JOHN LENNON TRIBUTE CONCERT –New York City

The Annual John Lennon Tribute

Singer Ani DiFranco is the honoree and will perform at the 41st annual John Lennon Tribute concert in December in New York City at the Peter Jay Sharpe Theater. Run by the nonprofit Theatre Within, the show benefits a songwriting program free to public schools and workshops for people with cancer and their family members.

Ani DiFranco is a longtime indie trailblazing artist that has forged her own way musically and in the business of music, that has many parallels to Lennon’s own spirit of musical independence. Other artists scheduled to appear include Bettye Lavette, Joan Osborne, KT Tunstall, and Nona Hendryx.

DECEMBER 13- JOHN HENRY’S FRIENDS BENEFIT –New York City

Just announced, Steve Earle’s seventh annual John Henry’s Friends Benefit Concert is coming to New York City’s Town Hall on December 13th. Presented with City Winery, the event features a lineup with Steve Earle & the Dukes as headliners as well as Bruce Springsteen, Rosanne Cash, Willie Nile, the Mastersons, and Matt Savage.

The concert will raise funds for the Keswell School benefiting children and young adults with autism. The educational program is close-to-home for Earle, whose son John Henry attends as a student.

“The John Henry’s Friends concerts are obviously a labor of love for myself as well as an expression of the generosity of all the performers who have suited up and showed up over the years,” Earle said of the event. “I’m especially grateful for this year’s new friends, my neighbor Willie Nile, my old friend Rosanne Cash and my hero Bruce Springsteen.”

Portland’s Chromatics is back in town on a rare tour. The last time they were at First Avenue, it was with Hot Chip in July 2012… so it’s been a good seven years since they played here.

All three bands listed on this Double Exposure tour had Johnny Jewel in them… so the man was basically playing three hours a night. He had so much dedication, and I think is really the mastermind behind this whole tour.

Starting the show was Vancouver’s In Mirrors (Jesse Taylor with Johnny Jewel). The duo played in near-darkness for their entire set, with some video images shown in the background. The darkness did help with the feeling of isolation, which was a real focus on their debut LP Escape from Berlin.

Closing out the set, Taylor asked the audience, “do you want a fast or slow one?” I’m not sure what the crowd said in response, but the answer was In Mirrors playing a cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “Streets of Philadelphia” (assuming they said “slow”).

Next up was Montreal’s Desire, featuring frontwoman Megan Louise, with Johnny Jewel on synthesizers, and Aja (from Heaven) on additional synth (she took place for Nat Walker, who is normally in the band). The group is probably the most pop of the three bands, as evident by their stand-out pop-ish song “Mirroir Mirroir”, telephone-prop for “Don’t Call”, and their Italo Disco cover of New Order’s “Bizarre Love Triangle”. That was such a great cover, that it was hard to follow that up with their closing song, “Under Your Spell.” However, it’s still a good choice, because it’s probably their best-known song. The song was featured in the underrated and amazing Nicolas Winding Refn’s Drive soundtrack (we mentioned the soundtrack in 2011).

Finally, Chromatics closed out the show. Before we talk about the show, I wanted to mention that I really love the overall theme and re-invention of the band. I’m talking about the eerie-movie visuals from Johnny Jewel (mixed by video artist Danny Perez from Antibirth and Panda Bear), the neon-lights at their merchandise table, and atmospheric lighting. It’s really cool, and I’ve never seen so many fans buying merchandise at a show. That’s because the prices are so affordable, it’s like they made those neon lights with the prices ten years ago.

The other thing I wanted to address is their long hiatus from the music scene. In 2014, the band announced Dear Tommy… but the record never came out because Johnny Jewel, a perfectionist, destroyed all copies of the album after a near-death experience. According to legends, Jewel re-recorded the entire album, but as of this writing, the record has yet to see the light of day. Some singles, like “Just Like You” and “I Can Never Be Myself When You’re Around” came out before the record was scrapped… so you got a glimpse of what the record sounded like.

Anyway, currently, at least for this tour, Chromatics features Ruth Radelet, Adam Miller, Matt Miller (replacing Nat Walker), and Johnny Jewel. The show is really special to brothers Adam & Matt, who told us that they grew up in Minneapolis. So when they were young, and going to concerts, “First Avenue was this place that was a doorway to a different reality.” They were very grateful to be on stage, closing their speech with “Thank you, thanks a lot.”

Since being absent from touring in so long (Chromatics’ last live show was five years ago), they did the right thing by playing some of the fans’ favorite songs… playing everything from “Kill for Love” to “Blue Girl” (with Adam Miller on lead vocals), and their cover of Neil Young’s “Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black)” (which closed out their set).

For the encore, Ruth came back solo to play a stripped down (and slowed) version of Springsteen’s “I'm on Fire”. The cover has been quite popular recently (with Lykke Li, Brown Shoe, Young Turks, AWOLNATION, Ten Fe, and Soccer Mommy from our previous coverages).

The rest of the band joined Ruth to close out the encore with their recent hit “Shadow” (which was used in Twin Peaks Season 3) and a cover of Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)”.

If you are on the fence about seeing Chromatics, you should do it… especially if you enjoy the work of Johnny Jewel (who had his finger in every aspect of the show). Also, who knows when the band will get together for another tour, so take this opportunity to see the band, at what I considered, is their finest hour.

Liverpool’s Banners, with Utah’s The Moth and the Flame, and California’s Pop Etc, will be on tour as part of the SiriusXM Presents Alt Nation Advanced Placement Tour. This is Banners’ very first USA tour, and it’s kicking off in Minneapolis on February 29th.

The last time we saw The Moth and the Flame, they opened up for Placebo at Mill City Night in October 2014... but we’ve been writing and covering them since 2012.

Although the name Pop Etc might not ring a bell, you might know them as The Morning Benders. Derek wrote about the band: “Since 2005, founder/frontman Chris Chu and friends (drummer Julian Harmon, bassist Tim Or, and guitarist/organist Joe Ferrell, all fellow alums of UC Berkeley) have been producing upbeat, bouncy guitar-pop with a sunny Californian sound.” (read more at weheartmusic.com). The Boss has tread lightly in terms of the digital age as he and manager Jon Landau, have always kept a tight rein on Springsteen’s music catalog.  Impressed by the Pearl Jam model of offering up soundboard recordings of live concerts both digitally and on traditional CD, Springsteen dove into that pool with 30 different shows from 2014’s High Hopes tour, making them available in HD 24 bit, lossless FLAC, and MP3 versions.

More recently, the massive vault of vintage Springsteen recordings was opened, beginning with a 2012 performance at the Apollo in NYC, originally broadcast on Sirius XM, and now a radio simulcast show from Cleveland in 1978, taken from seven recently unearthed ¼” master reels.

While both shows have been available unofficially, it’s a promising sign to collectors and fans to see definitive versions of older shows become available and Springsteen’s catalog  should broaden further in 2015.

As the Stones’ 50^th Anniversary Tour continues into 2015, the band has entered the digital download era not with recent shows from their current tour, but a handful of more classic shows on both audio and video.

Like the older Springsteen releases, the vintage Stones offerings have been long available unofficially, but collectors and completists will no doubt snap up these definitive authorized versions and the catalog continues to grow.

Our favorite Material Girl has done things the old-fashioned way to get attention, but is showing some movement in the digital direction.  First, she posed provocatively in the Art Issue of the Dec/Jan edition of Interview magazine, including an exposed bra top in corset and stockings.

Then, earlier this month, a handful of demos were released unofficially to the internet, purporting to be working versions of many of the upcoming tracks from her March 2015 album, Rebel Heart (then speculated to be called Iconic).  While her people were dismissing the credibility of the leaked tracks, she took to Instagram to decry it an “artistic rape” and “form of terrorism”, though the post was quickly deleted.

Madge and co. soon went into combative overdrive, offering up six official tracks for immediate download (including Diplo-produced first single “Living for Love” which wasn’t due until Feb 14), with pre-order of the full album.   The strategy worked, as iTunes pre-orders for the album topped the charts in 40+ countries.

Don’t expect any vault releases digitally anytime soon, though it would be great to hear unreleased remixes, unused collaborations, and early session works with Stephen Bray and Nile Rodgers from her early albums.

After the 2014 release of not one, but two studio albums and a long-awaited deal with Warner Brothers to return his master recordings, anticipation was high in the Purple zone for a benchmark year.  Though he and band 3^rd Eye Girl managed some hit-and-run random concert dates, mostly in Europe and there were sporadic gigs back home at Paisley Park, a major tour never did materialize in 2014, as was fully expected.

Prince was an early pioneer as a major music artist to utilize the internet in then-unseen ways to connect and also created innovative marketing like giving away copies of his Musicology album in 2004 with every concert ticket bought (which at that time, counted as sales on SoundScan charts) and the looming 30^th anniversary of Purple Rain, had expectations high.

Prince, in his inimitable and unpredictable way, instead pulled the plug on all social media just before Thanksgiving; silencing the 3^rd Eye Twitter account, his barely used Facebook page, and lauded Prince-stagram account as well.

Still remaining mostly silent, third party sites and the Purple Essence and Baron 3121 accounts, are the closest link to finding out what The Purple Yoda may or may not do next, though an authorized lyric video for song “Anotherlove” did appear recently, via WB.

In typical and seemingly unplanned fashion, after spending the last year and a half doing reunion shows at indie festivals, The Replacements recently released a 24 min. jazz jam via Soundcloud, called “Poke Me in My Cage”, recorded in October in Waltham, MA.

The Paul and Tommy reunion was initially spurred by ex-bandmate Slim Dunlap’s need for financial support following a debilitating stroke, which resulted in a series of singles and resulting benefit album, and after the tour announcement, plans for new Replacements music were floated about.

While the extended instrumental probably has little bearing on what any new ‘Mats songs will actually sound like, the unexpected release did get fans excited for the prospect of new songs to come.  Westerberg himself previously released digital tracks timed and named 49:00 and 5:05, so fans can likely expect more of the unexpected.
