Hüsker Dü and Sugar legend Bob Mould is currently on a successful Solo Electric tour, stopping by the Cedar Cultural Center in Minneapolis 28th, 2023. This was an additional show added to his schedule, due to selling out the Turf Club (tonight, October 29)… which, of course, Mould also sold out the Cedar.

Opening the show was Jason Narducy. He started off like a tempest and ultimately broke a guitar string, 30 seconds into his first song. So, while he was putting on a new guitar string, it was “story time”. He actually has a lot of “story time”, as this would not be the first.

He has a lot to say, because like Mould, Narducy has a long-running career in music. He started with his punk band Verboten in the 80s. That band inspired Dave Grohl to pursue music. He had a stripped down duo with cellist Alison Chesley, and a full rock band with Alison called Verbow in 90s. Narducy would play Verbow’s “Holiday” near the end of the set.

We know that Narducy would play with Bob Mould and also Superchunk. His solo project is called Split Single, with a debut album Fragmented World, in 2014.

Despite being around for four decades, he confessed he’s never played the Cedar Cultural Center. It’s not surprising, because the Cedar don’t normally book rock or punk bands, their focus is on World Music and the NPR audience.

One of the stories he told early in his set was how his daughter was really into Destroy Boys. So, being the rock dad, he took his kids to Riot Fest and ultimately got the band (particularly guitarist Violet) to meet his daughter. She was crying “tears of joy”, and it was a moment she’ll probably never forget. What was the point to the story? Narducy ended, “The point is buy Destroy Boys records!”

Narducy ended his set with his Split Single song, “(Nothing You Can Do) To End This Love.”

True to the “Solo Electric” name of the tour, this is just raw Bob Mould, playing electric guitar by himself. No drums, no bass, just furious guitars.

Mould started in the late 70s, and found early success with Hüsker Dü. The band eventually broke up, and Mould would resurface in a new band called Sugar in the early 90s with bassist David Barbe and drummer Malcolm Travis.

Since 1996, Mould plays under his own name, or billed under Bob Mould Band, but fans still love those early Du and Sugar music… which he happily play on this current solo set. Half the set consisted of Hüsker Dü songs, with a dash of Sugar.

We saw the group in Feb 2016 and wrote, “Bullet For My Valentine walked out on stage to Motorhead's “Ace of Spades” and completely captivated the audience throughout their twelve song set and two song encore. As I said, they did a great job of mixing old and new songs. They even threw in a seven-minute drum solo featuring guest drummer Jason Bowld. Michael 'Moose' Thomas, their usual drummer, decided to sit this tour out due to his wife expecting their first child. Usually this would be a complete downer, but Jason did a great job of filling the throne. He didn't miss a beat and did Moose justice. I honestly wouldn't have been able to tell it was a new drummer had it not been for it being pointed out by singer Matthew Tuck.”

We’re big fans of A Giant Dog, mostly thanks to their dynamic singer Sabrina Ellis. The group will stop in Minneapolis, at the Icehouse, on October 25th.

We’ve followed Ellis on a number of her side projects, including Sweet Spirit and Heart Bones (with Har Mar Superstar).

A few years ago, we caught Sweet Spirit in April 2017, and noted, “ Originally a nine-piece band, Sweet Spirit, at least for this 2017 tour, is currently a six piece, featuring: Andrew Cashen, Sabrina Ellis, Joshua Merry, Jake Knight, Jon Fichter, Danny Lion. That’s still a lot of people for a typical rock band. They normally don’t start with ‘The Power’, but for this special night, singer Sabrina Ellis felt they needed to start the show with a “slow song”. Based on hearing the band talk about other local bands around here (particularly a shout-out to Teenage Moods), it sounded like the band is well beloved around the Twin Cities.”

Field Music to open. We caught Field Music in Mar 2010 and said, “As I previously mentioned, I've never heard of Field Music, and I mostly requested to see them live because I liked Clientele, thinking that they'll sound alike... but to be honest, I did not think they were much similar, besides from being both English. That's not to say that they were bad, just different from what I anticipated. They certainly have their fans, though. A friend I ran into was there specifically to see Field Music (then left half way into the Clientele's set), and people did keep shouting out requests. "Sit Tight!" someone in the audience said, in which Peter responded that they'd love to play them, "if only we knew how". ”

Hüsker Dü and Sugar legend Bob Mould announces a fall Solo Electric tour of the United States stopping by the Cedar Cultural Center in Minneapolis on October 28th.

Support on the tour will be the long-time bassist in Mould’s touring trio Jason Narducy. Mould says of this run, “I'm excited to be back in the Northeast and Midwest, especially during peak fall colors. I'm happy to have Jason supporting the tour — it's been a while since we've done solo shows together. I'm nervous, too: I've got a handful of new songs to share with you!”

We caught Mould in Sep 2021 and said, “We’ve seen Bob Mould Band before, playing Sugar’s songs at Rock the Garden 2013… but I’ll have to admit that the band (featuring Jason Narducy on bass and Jon Wurster on drums), were in top form at the First Avenue show. All the songs off Bob Mould’s album Blue Hearts were played with an explosive loudness – fast and to the point. This tour is really to promote Mould’s latest album, Blue Hearts (Merge Records), but it’s also a reflection of his late 80s and early 90s songs, which were collected in Demon Records’ Distortions 1989-1995 box set.”

Hüsker Dü and Sugar legend Bob Mould announces a fall Solo Electric tour of the United States stopping by the Cedar Cultural Center in Minneapolis on October 28th.

Support on the tour will be the long-time bassist in Mould’s touring trio Jason Narducy. Mould says of this run, “I'm excited to be back in the Northeast and Midwest, especially during peak fall colors. I'm happy to have Jason supporting the tour — it's been a while since we've done solo shows together. I'm nervous, too: I've got a handful of new songs to share with you!”

This tour is really to promote Mould’s latest album, Blue Hearts (Merge Records), but it’s also a reflection of his late 80s and early 90s songs, which were collected in Demon Records’ Distortions 1989-1995 box set.”

Musician Bob Mould headlined First Avenue, in Minneapolis, on September 25. The show was billed as Bob Mould Band, although if you look at the show poster, it lists Bob Mould / Jason Narducy / Jon Wurster... and deserving so, as the band is very good and their names should be recognized.

This was Halifax’s Kestrels eight and final show with Bob Mould, and what a great show to end their brief tour (being as this used to be Mould’s old stomping grounds).

The band released an album, Dream or Don’t Dream, on Darla Records, during the COVID pandemic, and so the band was so excited to finally play those songs live.

The set started with “Vanishing Point”, which singer and guitarist Chad Peck explains, “I liked the idea of the record opening with the band kicking in with this intense and hypnotic riff as opposed to a synth overture or a bunch of sound effects. This is a song where John Agnello took out some of the layered rhythm guitars to open the song up, and as a result it really jumps out of the speakers. He also ran the vocals through a Leslie which is a cool effect. Lyrically, it’s about recognizing a relationship is ending and the unease that comes with the undeniable, inevitable feeling of collapse, and recognizing distortions in your thinking. It careens between “wanting to hide” and “I don’t want to lie”, reflecting the oscillating feelings involved in letting go. The title comes from the David Markson book of the same name, one of the best I’ve read in the past few years.”

Highlight of their set was “Grey and Blue”, which features Dinosaur Jr’s J Mascis playing the guitar solo. Apparently, the band met after Kestrels played at a bike shop with Dinosaur Jr. and became musical friends. The song would later be named one of Guitar World’s “essential guitar tracks”.

For alternative music fans Bob Mould needs no introduction. He’s a Minneapolis legend, having started Hüsker Dü, and later Sugar.

As you can from the setlist, the first part of the set were mostly songs from Blue Hearts. The rest of the set features early Mould solo songs and a lot of Hüsker Dü’s songs with a splash of Sugar songs.

After playing the show, Mould praised the city and the venue, writing, “Thanks Minneapolis for a super fun night! It’s great to be back “home away from home” and First Avenue always feels like home. If you’ve never been to see a show at First Ave, add it to your list of things to do. The production is amazing, the sight lines are great, and the crowds are enthusiastic.”

You all know our love for The Joy Formidable since we wrote about them in July 2008: “Here's a band that I see a lot of potential in, The Joy Formidable.”

We’ve since seen the band multiple times, the last being in Nov 2018, where we noted, “After a two year-absent, the band returned to the Twin Cities, headlining and selling out the Turf Club in St Paul on Friday night. It was nice to see the band at a small “pub gig” again. Bassist Rhydian Dafydd and singer “Ritzy” seemed really loose and making faces as they launched into “This Ladder Is Ours”. Even the drummer would occasionally rise from his seat to whip the audience into a deserving frenzy. Seeing the band this animated vs their button-down-proper gig in 2016, was a much better experience.”

It’s been a while… but I’m happy to say that the group is back with a new album Into the Blue, out August 20th, via Enci Records (US) / Full Time Hobby (Europe) / Soundly Distro in the rest of the world. We’re hoping there’ll be a promo tour for the new album sometime late this year … if they do make an announcement – we’ll let you know.

French artist Silly Boy Blue (Ana Benabdelkarim) recently releases her album Breakup Songs (Columbia France). Her name comes from a David Bowie song… which, of course, is in reference to “Little Boy Blue” nursery rhyme.

According to the singer, she said it took her 25 years to release this album about love, friendly breakups, crushes, scars, failures and successes… it’s all in this album.

Silly Boy Blue adds, “Teenager is the last song I wrote before starting the studio session. It is a sort of overview of what I am, of all the things I didn’t want to forget to mention in the album: to be a woman told to shut up, to not always fit in the box, to talk about sexuality too. I called it Teenager because it is the song I would have liked to write in my teenage years, and the lyrics I would have liked to hear.”

Although Mould’s Turf Club is sold out, fans can still check out the legendary songwriter at the Palace Theatre in St Paul. A couple of stellar singers are coming to Minneapolis/St Paul. First we have Lennon Stella (named Teen Vogue’s “16 Young Musicians You Need to Be Listening to in 2019”) with her sold out show at the Fine Line Music Cafe on Saturday, March 30th. I’m always amazed at how far Weezer has grown since their opening slot for Lush in August 1994. I’ve followed the band on and off for many years, and at some point, the band did outgrow us. But that doesn’t mean I don’t still love them. Weezer’s currently on tour in support of their new “The Black Album”, a running joke/tradition since their original debut “The Blue Album” (which is technically not the real name of the album).

Co-headlining with Weezer will be another favorite, Pixies. Again, one of those bands I grew up listening in the 90s, and sort of followed Black Francis/Frank Black’s solo career for a time, and back again as frontsman of Pixies. The band is so good live, that they literally will play a different set every night... but always playing fan-favorite “Here Comes Your Man”.

The all-day 30th Anniversary Summit Backyard Bash Music Festival is taking place next Saturday, September 10th. The event, headlined by Bob Mould with Bully and Dem Atlas, will cost $30 (advance) and $40 day of the show (cash only).

Since this is a beer event, you must be 21 or over. Kids will be allowed in the festival with an adult accompanying them.

A portion of ticket sales go directly to the Minnesota Music Coalition (MMC), a nonprofit service organization dedicated to supporting Minnesota’s independent music community. Summit Backyard Bash 30th Anniversary Celebration!

LAND SPEED RECORD 35th ANNIVERSARY SHOW

It’s been 35 years since Hüsker Dü released their debut record Land Speed Record. To celebrate, one of Hüsker Dü’s original founding member Grant Hart (joined by The Glandolinian Army, featuring Hart, Dylan Richie, and Timonthy Alleick) will likely perform the record live next Monday at the 7th Street Entry.

Fun Fact #1: Land Speed Record was recorded live at the 7th Street Entry on August 15, 1981.

Fun Fact #2: “Landspeed Records” is the online name of Minneapolis’ Roadrunner Records.

There isn’t a lot of details online, but fans can likely expect to hear about 17 songs crammed into a 27-min set.

Also, there will be a panel discussion of the importance of the record by Steve McClellan, Grant Hart, Greg Norton, Terry Katzman, Lori Barbero, and more.

Also, there will be a special Chris Larson: Land Speed Record art/film installation at the Walker from June 9, 2016 through January 8, 2017. Additional details below:

The Walker Art Center presents Chris Larson: Land Speed Record on view June 9, 2016 through January 8, 2017 in the Medtronic Gallery. The exhibition is titled after Land Speed Record, the album by acclaimed St. Paul, Minnesota punk band Hüsker Dü that rose to cult status after being recorded live at the 7th St. Entry on August 15, 1981. At the Walker, Larson’s gallery environment is comprised of two films, a sculpture, a photograph, and sound. At the center of the installation are two films—one color, one black and white—exploring a group of objects that occupied Larson’s studio for two years. The items originated from the childhood home of Grant Hart, Hüsker Dü’s founder and co-songwriter, which caught fire and partially burned in 2011. The smoke-blackened contents—furniture, appliances, antiques and collectibles, auto parts, ephemera from gigs, art supplies, clothing, master tapes, musical instruments—had to be quickly cleared from the home, and Larson volunteered his studio (a repurposed industrial warehouse space) for their temporary storage.

Los Angeles based thrashers Zig Zags will be headlining the 7th Street Entry next Tuesday, touring in support of Running Out of Red (Castleface Records).

The band has previously been linked to Ty Segall so expect that sort of carefree “California” Burger Records style of music.

This is a true story, but the first time I heard the term ‘zig zag’: I was walking to my apartment in 1997 and some dude on the street asked me, “Hey man, you got any zigzags?” My default answer was “No.” then followed by “I don’t know what that is.” He said he needed it to roll weed. In case you missed it, Zig-Zag is a rolling paper used for tobacco (or whatever you want to smoke).

Is the Summer really over? Wow, that was fast! One of the highlight of the Summer was Paul McCartney at Target Center, who played nearly three hours of music. But was the past... Vu and John look forward to "Something Fall-ish", music shows in the Twin Cities in the next two months.
