Iowa-based two-piece Telekinetic Yeti headlined the 7th Street Entry, in Minneapolis, on August 29th, in support of their Tee Pee Records debut album, Primordial.

Opening the triple-rock show was Minneapolis’ Thunderbolt Pagoda, featuring Erik Wivinus on vocals and guitars, Gérard-Jéan Boissy on bass, Matt Entsminger on drums, and Ralph Karsten on synths. The band was named after the 1968 surreal film Invasion of Thunderbolt Pagoda.

The group played tracks from their albums, Artefakt III and Second Ascension, while psychedelic visuals were projected over the band, from the back of the stage by Van Glow Light Show. Side note, Van Glow was clearly named after celebrated impressionist artist Vincent Van Gogh ... but what does he know about music? Didn’t he cut off his ear?

Van Glow would provide visuals for all the bands on the bill.

White Hills at Varsity (06 Aug 2013)

Next up was New York City fuzz rock outfit White Hills, who we haven’t seen for nearly 10 years, since they opened up for The Cult in Aug 2013.

We were very excited to catch up on the duo (Dave W. and Ego Sensation). They still had that 70s guitar sound, but it would seem that Ego would make use more of percussion, in addition to providing additional or lead vocals whenever a song called for it.

The band expressed gratitude to be part of this tour, and would dedicate their song “In Your Room” to Telekinetic Yeti .

White Hill’s forthcoming album The Revenge Of Heads On Fire (to be released September 16 via Heads On Fire Industries).

The Minneapolis show was the end of a long two-month North American tour, which started in South Carolina on July 2nd, and took them to the south (Texas), west coast (California), and finally winding to an end in Minneapolis. You can tell that after such a long travel that Telekinetic Yeti were both sadden that it would come to and end... but at the same time, they can finally take a break.

The doom/stoner duo (Alex Baumann and Rockwel Heim) was very comfortable on stage, playing the same set night after night.

As you can see from their setlist (with additional notes and settings), almost every song was from their new sophomore album Primordial. The two exceptions, “Abominable” and “Stoned and Feathered”, were taken from their debut album Abominable .

We last saw New York’s Cults (not to be confused with The Cult) in November 2013 and wrote, “The last time we saw Cults, they admitted that playing First Avenue was one of the scariest thing they've ever done. The band is back, and this time, showing that they are more confident in their show! Gone are singing in darkness, this time, Cults used lots of light effects as well as new background projection. I have to say, they are certain more entertaining this time around.”

It looks like the duo (Madeline Follin and Brian Oblivion) is back on tour, stopping by the Turf Club in St Paul this August 28th.

Australian psychedelic group Tame Impala is doing some selective U.S. Summer Music Festival (having just played Coachella)… and they are headlining a couple of Surly Brewing Festival (at the Surly Brewing Co. Festival Field). Both shows have sold out.

We last saw the group at Desert Daze 2018, they only played a few songs: “Tame Impala started their set off strong with the groovy tune Nangs off of 2015’s al-bum Currents. Let it Happen was next, and from the pit I heard the eruption of “Whoa” and “Wow’s” from the crowd, and at first it seemed like it was maybe in response to the trippy background effects behind lead singer Kevin Parker. I quickly realized it was the sky illuminating with lightning bolts above us. Sure enough, halfway through Sundown Syndrome (ironic much), a producer came out and announced that they had to stop. Kevin kind of shrugged and said “I guess we gotta stop.” and they all ran off the stage.”

Oberst was recently in town on Mar 2019 as Better Oblivion Community Center (the collaboration with Phoebe Bridgers), which we wrote, “We may only be a few months into the year, but Better Oblivion Community Center seems like rock’s current hottest ticket, and with good reason. Though most shows have been upgraded (still subsequently selling out) this is one “meeting” worth chasing a ticket for, and attending at your local “community center”.”
