November means chillier temperatures and the end of daylight savings time, but there are still a number of good shows coming to the area. As has become usual, a few cancellations and a postponement or two, so check those social channels before heading out and be sure to bring a mask and proof of vaxx along as well.
Kansas City has one less music venue going forward as
The Riot Room (formerly
The Hurricane) in Westport decided to close their doors for good after not receiving any pandemic aid relief that most other venues did.
Here’s what’s happening in the area for the First half of November
(a few recommended shows are highlighted below):
Monday November 1
Crumb, Granada- Lawrence. $25
Doug Stone, Knuckleheads, $25-$40
Tuesday November 2
Theory of a Deadman with
10 Years, Arvest Bank Theatre at the Midland. $15-$20
Wednesday November 3
Cory and the Wongnotes featuring
Antwaun Stanley, Madrid. $25
We already liked almost everything we’ve heard from Grammy® Award-nominated songwriter, producer, and guitarist
Cory Wong but he’s raised his game with the release of
The Paisley Park Session, a new live album recorded and filmed earlier this year at
Prince’s legendary
Paisley Parkjust outside of Minneapolis. His tour kicks off in Kansas City and the leg ends with a hometown Minneapolis show in snowy February.
“Paisley Park is such a legendary place to record music,” says Wong. “It was Prince’s studio and even home for years. Studio A was his sanctuary. Coming back to Paisley Park and recording my songs was an absolute joy. The band was hot that day and it shows in the recording.”

Remo Drive w/
Boyscott, Another Michael, The Rino- North KC, $13-15.
Indie rockers
Remo Drivehave been eager to hit the road again in support of latest album,
A Portrait of an Ugly Man(Epitaph Records) which released last year. Self-produced and mixed, the group is led by brothers Erik (vocals, guitar) and Stephen (bass) Paulson, the band hopes to keep the momentum that their 2017 debut began.
Their sound can get un-apologetically loud, but don’t be waylaid by the somber and self-depreciating lyrics, as there’s also a sonic ray of hope to most of their songs.
Big Head Todd and the Monsters, Uptown, $25-$99
Colorado’s
Big Head Todd and the Monsters seem somewhat overdue for new music, but the band (which has been together an amazing thirty-seven years) has always been in their best element when playing live. We saw them most recently in two completely different type shows- a
blues club themed show in 2016 and then again with a more
standard concert in 2018. Always impressive live, their Midwest and mountain state fans remain strongly loyal.
The Brian McKnight 4, Lied Center. $19-$50
Leonid & Friends, Ameristar. $20-$120
Pert Near Sandstone, Knuckleheads, $15
Black Dice, Encore. $18
Saturday November 6

I Don't Know How But They Found Me, recordBar, $27.50-$30.
There continues to be somewhat of an element of secrecy surrounding this Salt Lake City duo, but it’s safe to say the
secret is outabout
I Don’t Know How They Found Me, with the success of their 2020 album
Razzmatazz (on Fearless Records) and single, “Leave Me Alone”.
The group is comprised of former
Panic! At The Disco bassist Dallon Weekes and
Falling In Reverse drummer Ryan Seaman and released their newest single, “Mx.Sinister” in June, with their tour continuing into next year. Don’t sleep on this one, as they’ll likely be playing much bigger rooms, their next time through.
John Hiatt with Jerry Douglas, Knuckleheads. $55-$69.50
Two longtime musical titans have joined forces for their first collaborative album,
Leftover Feelings (on New West Records) and an accompanying tour. Both started their careers in the 70s-
John Hiatt the Americana blues rock troubadour and
Jerry Douglas, the master of the dobro and lap steel and responsible for so much of the
Alison Krauss sound.
Tickets may seem a little steep, but balance that with seeing two legends in a comparatively small venue, and it becomes a good value.
Winterlude, Kansas City and All That’s Jazz, Yardley Hall, $25
Tauren Wells w/
Riley Clemmons,Andrew Ripp, Sheffield Family Life Center. $14.95-$60
Robbie Fulks, Lied Center. POSTPONED to Feb 6, 2022
Monday November 8
Jackie Venson, Knuckleheads, $10
We enjoyed seeing the Austin, TX soul/R&B/blues singer-songwriter when she opened for
Gary Clark, Jr.back in 2017 and have been trying to see her again ever since. Thankfully, she regularly tours and has made
Knuckleheads a regular stop on her itinerary.
Her latest album is
Love Transcends featuring singles, “Til this Pain Goes Away” and “Rolling On” and she’s also managed to release another live album,
Joy Alive. Well worth the affordable door charge.
Emmet Cohen Trio, Lied Center. $19-$35

Queensryche, Ameristar. $35-$55
Initially formed in Seattle over forty years ago, the classic band now led by frontman Todd La Torre continues on the road, in support of 2019’s
The Verdict (Century Media Records), with La Torre even playing drums on that album, in the wake of Scott Rockenfield’s departure.
Queensryche continues to musically look forward, anchored by original members guitarist Michael Wilton and bassist Eddie Jackson, while still revisiting those classic songs of the 80’s and 90s. (ex-singer
Geoff Tate comes to town a mere week later, to complete the full QR experience)

Continuing the seemingly strange, but musically brilliant collaboration begun in 2019, the UK pub rock legend
Nick Lowe and the instrumental
Los Straitjackets are back on the road after collaborating on a 4-song
Tokyo Bay EP and documenting their first run, with recent live album,
Live at Haw River Ballroom. Expect some Lucha Libre masks worn on stage, and maybe a few in the crowd as well.

Monday November 15
Julien Baker with DEHD and Katie Malco, Granada - Lawrence. $25
Tennessee-raised singer/songwriter/guitarist
Julien Baker released her critically acclaimed third full length,
Little Oblivions (on Matador Records) in early February and it would top the Alternative Album, Independent Album, Vinyl Sales and Americana/folk charts. A remix album,
Little Oblivions Remixed would follow, released this September.
Though Baker’s lyrics are often unabashedly honest and confessional, her on-stage persona began as initially very shy and reserved when we
saw her in 2017, but then more
confident in 2018 and we also recently previewed her current tour
here. Fingers crossed that everyone keeps quiet and pays attention, as Baker’s music deserves it.
Madison Beer, The Truman. $27.50-$55
