Irish indie rock band, The Academic, is touring in support of their sophomore album, Sitting Pretty. The album was produced by award-winning former Kaiser Chiefs member, Nick Hodgson at London’s Snap Studios.

Sitting Pretty is described as a journey into adulthood, “It’s about finding your feet, feeling the weight of time passing on your shoulders, and trying to enjoy the good times and meaningful relationships along the way.”

The Academic’s first headline US tour will stop by the 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis on April 18th. The band previously was in town supporting Judah & The Lion, in Sep 2017.

You guys know we love Bikini Kill. We often considered Kathleen Hanna as the one that started the whole Riot Grrrls movement… and we worship the grounds she walks on. We have followed her through her various projects, such as Julie Ruin and Le Tigre (our personal favorite).

One of the biggest disappointment when we heard the BK reunion tour in 2019 was that they weren’t playing Minnesota at all. Many diehard fans bought tickets to the nearest town in Wisconsin. For those who waited this long, and yes, through the COVID cancellations… We’re very excited to say that Bikini Kill will be finally playing Minnesota, in St Paul, at the Palace Theatre, this April 20, 2023.

Kathleen Hanna (09 April 2014)

We caught Julie Ruin in Lincoln Hall (09 April 2014) and wrote, “The importance of Grrl Power was emphasized when Hanna told the story of how she met guitarist Sara Landeau at a Girls Rock Camp. She told a funny tale of how the two of them were roadies for a girl band performance and how people watching them plug in the equipment and set-up the amps, etc. assumed they were bitchy stage moms, but “No, we’re roadies!” And she explained how during band camp, the girls write their own song and then perform it, and this band’s song was called, “Good Luck, You Suck”: “It was really good. We should cover it.” She was visibly touched when she was told that a couple of the teenage girls in attendance were current rock campers, and she talked about how she believes that the younger generation has their act together so much better than her generation – but that she hopes that her generation did a thing or two that will inspire the younger generation too.”

And yes, we were there for Placebo in Oct 2014 and wrote, “Singer/songwriter/guitarist Brian Molko looked and sounded fantastic. Although original drummer Steve Hewitt left the band in 2007, I don't think anyone missed him on this tour... I have to say that new drummer Steve Forrest did an amazing job, spending the entire set shirtless to show off his various tattoos. The massive grin on his face tells me that this was a job that he love doing.”

Mo Lowda & The Humble will be headlining the 7th Street Entry on April 21, 2023.

Illiterate Light will open the show. The duo (singer-guitarist Jeff Gorman and drummer Jake Cochran), is touring in support of their new album Sunburned, out now via Thirty Tigers.

The album’s single, “Hellraiser,” can be heard on YouTube and speaking about the song, Gorman said, “‘Hellraiser’ is not an autobiographical song. Much of our new record is autobiographical and emotionally intimate, but Hellraiser is a different beast. It came about while I was conducting a series of psychological experiments on myself after reading a chapter of the Red Book by Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung. The song is a voodoo gumbo of my own subconscious grappling with uninitiated masculinity, pain vs pleasure, and a childhood love of horror films. I wrote the form and lyrics, Jake played keys and drums, and we embraced the studio in a new way, rejecting previous limitations we’d put on ourselves.”

Austin based indie-folk band Wild Child is back in the Twin Cities, playing the Fine Line Music Café in Minneapolis on April 23, 2023. The group recently released the single “Cheap Champagne” off of their latest album End of the World (Ranch Records).

California’s rock duo Best Coast (Bethany Cosentino and Bobb Bruno) is returning to First avenue this Monday, February 9th, in support of their first album in five years, Always Tomorrow (Concord Records).

We caught the band in Sep 2017, and said, “The duo actually haven’t released new music since California Nights (in 2015), but they were touring with Paramore, and saw an opportunity to book some headlining shows in some areas that Paramore wasn’t playing. Luckily that meant that band took over the Turf Club in St Paul on Monday night to a very happy crowd.”

Los Angeles band Starcrawler (vocalist Arrow de Wilde, drummer Austin Smith, guitarist Henri Cash, and bassist Tim Franco) headlined the Turf Club in St Paul on October 16th.

Poppy Jean Crawford opened the show with a brief 30 minute set.

Starcrawler first came to our attention with their breakout performance at Desert Daze 2017, where we reported, “Arrow de Wilde of Starcrawler is a badass and I loved their set. She is androgyny at its finest, decked out sparkling Hanes briefs and not giving a crap in the world. They covered [Tom] Petty’s Mary Jane’s Last Dance and played their super-mega hit Ants.”

Since then, the group released their self-titled debut album in March 2018 (for SXSW), and certainly gained notoriety with the audience in Austin, Texas, by “terrorizing the crowd”. They spent the rest of the year conquering Europe, starting with a performance on Later with Jools Holland and touring throughout the UK.

2019 is starting to look even better, having been included in the soundtrack to the Pet Semetary remake (which would explain their Ramones title track midway in their setlist), and now just released their sophomore album Devour You (Rough Trade). The album, particularly their single, “She Gets Around” is getting great reviews, citing it to sounding like 90s rock bands like Nirvana and The Breeders.

As for the Starcrawler’s Turf Club show, it started with a pulse pounding drumming from Austin Smith. This is quickly followed by some bass from Tim Franco… then joining them on stage was guitarist Henri Cash in his Jack White-ish cowboy outfit. This jamming only serves to introduce us to singer Arrow de Wilde, dressed like a zombie ballerina, as she starts dancing and singing “Home Alone”.

Visually and performance-wise, this is probably our favorite show of Rocktober. Everything from de Wilde strangling herself with the mic cords, to Cash’s guitar playing on the Turf Club’s bar (see photo!), to that faithful cover of the Ramones’ “Pet Semetary” song was done amazingly well.

The very popular Tegan and Sara will be playing the Fitzgerald Theater in St Paul on Sunday, October 13th. The show is sold out… but if you’re willing to buy their new book High School - you can meet them for a book signing at Next Chapter Booksellers before the concert.

We last saw them in Chicago in June 2014 and said, “With Warner determined to sell the girls as hip, lesbian older sisters to Taylor Swift and Katy Perry, Tegan and Sara were soon everywhere: performing on Ellen, having a version of “Closer” performed on Glee, appearing onstage with Taylor Swift, even recording an Oreo commercial. They spent most of 2013 as a support act for The Killers and fun. and will end 2014 with a support slot on Katy Perry’s Prismatic tour. They nearly swept the Canadian Juno Awards this year, winning the pop album, single, and group of the year awards. By all accounts, it’s a triumphant time for the Quins.”

Of course, Sleater-Kinney has sold out their tour, including the upcoming Palace Theatre in St Paul. We’ve seen the group numerous times, but unfortunately, the band took a long break (and eventually their original drummer Janet Weiss left the band). Angie Boylan is now the new drummer.

We caught SK in Feb 2015 and wrote, “As expected, SK mostly played songs from their latest record, No Cities to Love (Sub Pop). I've seen SK three other times (2000, 2002, and 2005) and they've always played First Avenue. This fact was mentioned by Carrie Brownstein who said, "Perhaps it's true that we never place a place as much as First Ave..." then quickly followed by "Don't quote me on that though!" She could be right, including a cancelled date and last night's date, SK booked First Avenue at least 6 times.”

The record is so good that as soon as it came out, Pitchfork declared it as “Best New Music”.”
