American band Palehound stopped by the 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis on Tuesday night, in support of their new album Eye On The Bat (Polyvinyl Records).

Alex Alone, stylized as alexalone, opened the show, in near darkness. The Austin-based band, led by Alex Peterson, is touring in support of their latest album ALEXALONE TECHNICAL RESEARCH. You would think that they would play new music, but according to Peterson, the entire setlist was “…handpicked by Liela” (at least that is the name I heard him say).

Although not their first time in Minneapolis, the band still seemed excited to play the legendary First Avenue venue (the 7th Street Entry is part of First Avenue) as they posed for photos outside the building.

The band is mostly instrumental, a slow burn of sounds, and can be described as slowcore. Again, with a dimly lit stage, the band prefers the audience to listen to their music, rather than watch the band on stage.

Palehound, featuring El Kempner on vocals/guitar, Zoë Brecher on drums and Larz Brogan on bass, closed out the night.

It’s been a long time since their last album, Black Friday in 2019. A couple of years of the pandemic later, and now the band is back, fresh with new songs for their new album Eye on the Bat.

As previously mentioned the last time we saw the band, in 21 Oct 2019, we noted that their music was described as “journal rock.”

True to that description, Eye on the Bat tells Kempner’s misadventures and personal thoughts during the pandemic years. Ultimately, the record was a long breakup album, everything from having “Good Sex” to “U Want It U Got It” to the line “You didn’t need my help, you didn’t need my help” from “The Clutch.”

We saw the band in April 2022, and said, “Inside the club, the mood was not of the Crimson and Blue of the college basketball team, it was somewhat darker with the night’s soundtrack reflected in the spectrum of the last five albums from Baroness, all color-themed in title, including their latest, Gold & Grey (2019, on Abraxan Hymns). The night’s setlist was unique as well- its first half consisting of fan-voted tracks, bridged by a short acoustic set, and finished with a choice selection from the band itself, resulting in a well-rounded retrospective of their two decades in music.”

Brighton’s alt-rock trio Demob Happy is returning to the USA this Fall… they’ll headline the Turf Club in St Paul this November 15th.

The band was last seen in the Minneapolis area in September 2019 with Band of Skulls.

To celebrate their return to the USA, the band announced their new single “Sweet & Sour America,” which singer/bassist Matthew Mercantonio explained is, “our ode to America, a country we love… a beautiful and complex place.”

Celebrate St Patrick’s Day with Gaelic Storm this March 17th at the Fitzgerald Theater. We first saw this Irish band in Aug 2016 and wrote, “Celtic favorites Gaelic Storm then got the holiday started right with their stirring Irish songs that invite dancing, and yes, drinking. The Boathouse is the sixth album released on the band’s own label, Lost Again Records, and is thematically, a seafaring set of traditional based songs. An instrumental started the 30 minute set on the right foot, with fiddle, tin whistle, and bagpipes getting the green-garbed crowd in the proper spirit. “Raised on Black and Tans” had Guinness pints in the air as newest member, fiddle player Kiana Weber, put bow to violin with a focused passion”

Boston-based Palehound (aka Ellen Kempner) opened the show. Kempner describes their music as “journal rock”, which is “…it’s kind of like journal-rock, just all of my biggest fears splurted onto some vinyl, no different from writing a diary, really.”

Kempner mentioned that her favorite place in the Twin Cities is Moon Palace Books. The book store occasionally hosts music events, which we saw in October 2018.

Most of the songs are about things that happened to them and their thoughts on the world. Their latest album is called Black Friday.

Adrianne Lenker and her full band Big Thief (with guitarist Buck Meek, bassist Max Oleartchik, and drummer James Krivchenia) closed out the night.

When Big Thief is on a break, Lenker is busy with her solo work. In January 2019 she released abysskiss on Saddle Creek Records.

Now with Big Thief, the group released Two Hands 4AD and touring in support of the new record. This is the group’s biggest tour yet, and what a start - by appearing on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Most of their shows are sold out, with others on the way of selling out.

The always fun Matt and Kim is on their 10 year anniversary celebration tour… they’ll be stopping by the Skyway Theatre in Minneapolis on October 24th.

If you are a diehard fan, the duo is offering a VIP package that will let you attend their live recording of “Matt and Kim Live Podcast” and Meet & Greet with exclusive merchandises, but you’ll have to arrive early. They do have a warning: “Please note language is definitely not suitable for all ages because of Kim.” We’ve seen them numerous times and, yeah, Kim is a bit of a pottymouth.

If you’ve never seen them before, they are known for their energetic fun shows, with balloons and Kim often balancing on fans or stagediving. Unfortunately, that sort stunt got Kim in the hospital with a broken knee, after her fall at the Maha Music Festival in Omaha in August. Hopefully they’ll be just as active with this upcoming tour - but obviously we can understand it if they tone it down a bit.

Since their debut album Gulag Orkestar in 2006, Beirut has grown on to international fame, garnering over 736,000 fans on Facebook, though I imagine their fan base is much larger.”

A Perfect Circle is back in town. This time at the new Armory venue and in support of their new album Eat The Elephant (the band's first new album in fourteen years!).

We caught the band in November 2017 and wrote, “With a sheer curtain between the crowd and the band, A Perfect Circle began their hundred-minute set with 2003’s ‘The Package’, the curtain dropping mid-song as Keenan sang “give this to me!” to a roaring crowd. The set was, and remained mostly in darkness for the show, bassist McJunkins and guitarist Billy Howerdel prowled out front as Keenan, James Iha on rhythm guitar/keys and drummer Friedl were each perched on individual round platforms towards the back of the stage. Keenan stayed mostly in darkness throughout, though his flowing blonde wig was visible as he swayed and moved about in the fog and black.”

Badflower and Night Club (Goth-pop duo featuring flame-haired Emily Kavanaugh) will open.

Note: Tricky will not be appearing at the Minneapolis show.

UK’s Glass Animals has sold out every appearance in Minnesota… and their upcoming Palace Theatre show in St Paul is no exception. This is the band’s third North American headline tour and they are playing their biggest venues yet.

Glass Animals’ How To Be A Human Being is out now on Harvest Records. Their single ‘Agnes’ has been streamed over 10 million on Spotify worldwide.

Amber Mark to open. The singer’s latest single ‘Heatwave’ came out recently and immediately had Pitchfork calling it a “pop song built from melodies so warm, it might make a listener sweat from the second it starts.” Look for Mark’s debut 3.33am EP on PMR/Interscope Records.

We caught the band in November 2015 and wrote, “Palehound seemed to have as many fans at the show as Mitski. Not only because they are Pitchfork darlings. Delivering a somber, yet engaged set to an attentive audience, it’s clear that Ellen Kempner really cares about her story and craft. Her soundscape could be considered standard indie rock if it wasn’t for the evocative, sincere lyrics and almost new wave guitar noodling that she weaves in. Live she adds a bit of fury to the songs with some strong well placed shrieks. Her band is also very tight, and I enjoyed the tone and trot that the bassist brought. I’m definitely interested in what else Ellen decides to create as Palehound.”

Tall Friend and Strange Relations will open.

Palehound Opener, Palehound, a project by singer, guitarist and songwriter Ellen Kempner from Boston, MA, compliments Mitski’s raw and evocative style with her own, haunting confessionals. ...

Mitski, Palehound and PWR BTTM made their debut at First Ave’s side room, 7th Street Entry, on November 19th. With it, they brought a night of catharsis to the lonely, heart-broken and disillusioned young adults of Minneapolis.

PWR BTTM were a lot more pop than I expected them to be. For some reason because of their name I expected them to be a raucous and angsty punker band. Well, maybe they are a bit angsty, but they totally fit the bill’s sentimental energy. They employ some fun and adorable sounding power pop to tell their stories of loneliness and alienation. I think the climax of the set was their song “Serving Goffman,” off of the new Ugly Cherries. It really encapsulates their story and sound in just over two minutes.

Palehound

Her soundscape could be considered standard indie rock if it wasn’t for the evocative,  sincere lyrics and almost new wave guitar noodling that she weaves in. Live she adds a bit of fury to the songs with some strong well placed shrieks. Her band is also very tight, and I enjoyed the tone and trot that the bassist brought. I’m definitely interested in what else Ellen decides to create as Palehound.

Mitski’s touring band this time around had the standard power trio set-up; Guitar, drums and bass. And with that, she was able to deliver fully fleshed renditions of her Bury Me at Makeout Creek. I will admit that I was a bit disappointed that her set wasn’t quite as visceral as her opening set for Elvis Depressedly in Denver, CO. I think part of that might be because she had to fill in the guitar or bass for her missing band member at that show. Yet, it also left me pretty impressed on what kind of last minutes stops she can pull to put on a good show. She’s definitely got a knack for showmanship as her gloomy thematic album suggests, but I’ve now seen it confirmed repeatedly. She’s also very good at bringing an intimate set to another level with her musings and perceptions on her everyday and her personal accounts of people at their worst. Like I said before, Mitski is not just a musical project, it’s an identity. Pop gem craftsman,  heart on sleeve feminist, with knack in finding the light in the dark, she’ll continue to captivate release after release.

Mitski, an identity and solo project from New York, is coming to First Avenue’s side room, the 7th street entry on November 19th. I did not know about Mitski when I saw her co-headline with Elvis Depressedly in Colorado. I was not ready for what I was to hear; she delivers an ardent, raw and beautiful shredfest of a set. She rounds out her band with a drummer and bassist from what I gathered, but the bassist could not be at the show I saw her at last. I have been listening to her 2014 release; Bury Me at Makeout Creek, and have tried to make sense of the visceral, unhinged, yet incredibly poetic set I saw. The Mitski live experience is something that just cannot be captured by the recorded music. If you want to see and hear a moving performance like none other, I encourage you to seek out a Mitski show.

Opener, Palehound, a project by singer, guitarist and songwriter Ellen Kempner from Boston, MA, compliments Mitski’s raw and evocative style with her own, haunting confessionals. She is on tour with Mitski in support of her August 14, 2015 release: Dry Food... an album she says was made during an unstable transitional time. “I was struggling in college, and with mental health issues. The album is a snapshot of a weird time for me, where I was transitioning from being in college to getting a job.”

Last but not least is opener PWR BTTM. A queer punk band made up of Ben Hopkins and Liv Bruce. They will most likely be playing songs off of Ugly Cherries. The album is full of real life accounts of  their experiences with their queer and gender identities while living in upstate New York.

If you look at Lera Lynn's Wikipedia page, the only information it lists is her work with HBO's True Detective in 2014. The truth is, Lynn's career started a few years earlier with her debut album Have You Met Lera Lynn?, which spent some weeks on the Americana Airplay radio charts. There was a 2012 tour and she stopped by the Fine Line Music Cafe in Minneapolis in April 2012. Originally from Athens, Georgia, but I think she's currently residing in Nashville.

Of course, like I said, her reoccurring role as a depressing singer at the dive bar in True Detective really made an impact on viewers of the gritty drama. Love it or hate it, you couldn't ignore Lynn's songs "My Least Favorite Life" and "The Only Thing Worth Fighting For".

Plus, it is pretty amazing to be on True Detective Soundtrack, featuring some amazing songs by Leonard Cohen ("Nevermind") and Nick Cave ("All The Gold In California"... technically a cover song, but HBO used the Cave & Warren Ellis version).

Joining Lynn for this show will be Dylan LeBlanc.

Innovative vocalist Tanya Tagaq will be performing a special concert with Nanook of the North 1922 controversial film. Vocalist Tagaq, along with percussionist Jean Martin and violinist Jesse Zubot, will be performing a live accompaniment to the film’s silent images of life in an early 20th-century Inuit community in Northern Quebec. The Walker Art Center and Cedar co-presented show will take place from Thursday–Friday, November 19–20, 8 pm in the William and Nadine McGuire Theater.

Nanook of the North is considered the world's first major work of non-fiction filmmaking, yet it is rife with contradictions. The film portrays the lives of an Inuk family in Arctic Canada. Its director, Robert Flaherty, lived and worked with Inuit for years, but still included staged scenes of buffoonery and feigned Inuit ignorance of modern accoutrements.

Working with composer Derek Charke (whose Tundra Songs Tagaq performed with the Kronos Quartet), Tanya Tagaq employs exquisite improvisations with traditional roots, a style she has perfected over a decade of performances on major stages worldwide, as well as with collaborations with everyone from Björk (Tagaq joined her on the Medúlla tour) to Mike Patton (who contributed to Tagaq’s 2009 Juno-nominated album Auk/Blood).

Commissioned by the Toronto Film Festival for their First Nations Film Festival, Tagaq’s work with Nanook and with Charke began with a sonic exploration of the film’s imagery, images that spoke deeply to the vocalist. “The film expresses a lot of what I’m thinking and feeling,” Tagaq reflects. “It softened my anger about some of the great difficulties facing my community and put some beauty in there. It’s so hard to capture the absolute vastness of those places with visual elements alone. You can look at it, and it looks beautiful, but it’s also spacious and terrifying. The sound is very expansive. You can hear people talking from so far away. A single duck flying over you has the loudest sound in its wings. I have it in me, because I was born and raised up there.”
