Japanese Breakfast

We last saw Japanese Breakfast in Oct 2021... Japanese Breakfast is back, and this time, wearing her Time Magazine’s “Most Influential People of 2022” title proudly.

I was actually excited to see that The Linda Lindas will open the show. If I were to guess, the band is named after the Japanese film, Linda, Linda, Linda, which I wrote about in May 2007. The catchy theme song, “Linda Linda” was written by J-punk Blue Hearts.

How are the two bands related? Well, Japanese Breakfast is actually a Korean girl, while in the film, Linda Linda Linda, it’s about an all-Japanese group, who enlists a Korean singer, when they lost their lead singer. It’s all strangely related with the Japanes/Korean thing.

Anyway, The Linda Lindas is the new project from Kristin Kontrol (formerly of Dum Dum Girls).

UPDATE: The big news for this week is that Mandy Moore has cancelled her show at First Avenue on July 12th. She explained that she’s pregnant. She thought she could power through, but the long hours on the bus and not getting proper rest was just too challenging. She had to make the decision to cancel the entire 2022 tour.

Los Angeles-based singer, songwriter, and actress, Mandy Moore will be headlining First Avenue’s mainroom on July 12, in support of her seventh studio album In Real Life… this is her first tour in over ten years, so expect a health reaction and attendance to her million of fans.

Talking about the new album, Moore had this to say, “So much of this record came from future-tripping on the next chapter of my life and what it might look like: what parenthood would feel like, how it would change everything, and all the excitement and trepidation that comes with that. At the same time, it was about celebrating and acknowledging where we were at the moment and really trying to be completely present in the everyday—which is maybe the hardest part of the human condition.”

We just saw Mitski at the Palace Theatre in St Paul, on 14 Mar 2022, and wrote, “Japanese / American singer / songwriter Mitski headlined the Palace Theatre, in St Paul, on Monday night… bringing in her story-songs from Laurel Hell. The songs are so good that the Guardian had to dub her the “best young songwriter” earlier in February.”

If you missed that show, here’s your second chance to see the story of Laurel Hell by Mitski at the Surly Brewing Festival Field. It is all ages, despite being held at the beer company’s field.

Acclaimed guitarist Adrian Belew, will kick off his 2022 tour at the Turf Club, in St Paul, on July 13th, in support of his 25th solo record, Elevator. Adrian’s touring trio will include bassist Julie Slick and drummer Johnnie Luca.

We caught Belew in March 2019 and wrote, “Belew’s resume, spread over more than four decades, speaks for itself as being the guitarist of choice to call, by the likes of Zappa, Byrne, Bowie, Simon, and Reznor. That, along with his fabled long period in progressive group King Crimson, make Belew one of the premier guitarists of our time.”

Comedian and songwriter Tim Heidecker will be playing the Fitzgerald Theater in St Paul on July 20th, in support of his album High School (Spacebomb Records).

The show is in two acts, the first half is stand-up comedy, featuring Heidecker’s “No More Bullsh**” character, and the second part of the show will feature Tim Heidecker and his band The Very Good Band (drummer Josh Adams, bassist Eliana Athayde, and guitarist Catfish Connor).

New York’s Michelle (stylized as MICHELLE) opened the show. Watching the dance routines of the group, I got the impression that not only are they inspired by Pop and R&B harmonies, but they took a few notes from popular K-Pop bands.

I just assumed that all the girls were named Michelle… but that’s not the case, the four girls are Sofia D’Angelo, Layla Ku, Emma Lee, and Jamee Lockard. The two guys, Julian Kaufman and Charlie Kilgore, handled the music.

They ended their set with “The Bottom”.

Seeing a recent Mitski is like seeing a play performance, especially with each new tour having a different theme based on her albums… it’s certainly different from her humble beginning, playing the 7th Street Entry in Nov 2015 .

We last saw Mitski’s last tour for Be The Cowboy, in 2018 and described the show as, “Mitski has always had a theatrical side to her, but for this show, it’s all well-choreographed and served more like an art performance with music, rather than a standard pop/rock show. Each song had a custom video, with a particular dance movement. Her band is often in the background, sometime not even facing the crowd, but that’s exactly how they’re used for this tour. The spotlight is on Mitski at all times and she should be the center of focus.”

Mitski’s latest tour, for her new album, Laurel Hell, is themed around a home and tells the story of Laurel Hell. Like last time, she is the main focus, and every song and dance were choreographed. She did change it up a little, citing that the Palace Theatre’s stage were slippery, and ended up removing her shoes for better movement.

Japanese-American singer/songwriter Mitski (Mitski Miyawaki) sold out her show at First Avenue’s mainroom on Friday, October 27th. This marked Mitski’s biggest stage to date.

Opening the show was New York duo Overcoats (Hana Elion and JJ Mitchell), touring in support of their debut album Young. This is the third time we’ve seen Overcoats, and it’s our favorite so far. In their first show with Matt Corby in May 2016 they were standard singer/songwriter folk singers. We saw them again with Tennis in Mar 2017 and they had transformed their show to a weird karaoke/art performance. With this current 2018 tour, the duo added a drummer called Sara G (?) to their live show.

As usual, Overcoats won over the audience with their sweet harmonies and dancing in unison. The crowd absolutely loved them, and Hana Elion had to mention several times that “Minneapolis is the literally best!”

Since their debut Young came out in 2017, it’s no secret that the group was working on their sophomore album. They decided to play two of those upcoming songs near the end of their set. Since the album is still pending, the song titles (just sample lyrics) are not obviously correct.

Mitski didn’t know how many times she’s played the Twin Cities, but she remembered playing the 7th Street Entry (next door) a few times (we saw her in Nov 2015, July 2016, and mentioned Triple Rock in July 2017), and had always wondered what it was like to be in the “big room” at First Avenue.

She really loved the historic First Avenue, again thanking the venue and staff for working so well with her band, “Some of the employees have worked here for 30 years...” which is older than her (she’s 28).

Mitski has always had a theatric side to her, but for this show, it’s all well-choreographed and served more like an art performance with music, rather than a standard pop/rock show. Each song had a custom video, with a particular dance movement. Her band is often in the background, sometime not even facing the crowd, but that’s exactly how they’re used for this tour. The spotlight is on Mitski at all times and she should be the center of focus.

Thanks to Mitski’s most raved album of 2018, Be The Cowboy (landing at #52 in the Billboard Top 200, #10 in Top Current Albums, #11 in Billboard Top Albums, #2 in Vinyl Albums), the current tour has sold out all across the country. That’s right, every show on this tour is sold out.

It wasn’t just watching Mitski that was fun, but part of the show is also just hearing and seeing her fans sing back to every song! You have to love the fact that Mitski started at the tiny 250-capacity show at the 7th Street to a 1,500+ capacity show at First Avenue, in such a short time.

Scottish band The Twilight Sad is playing the Turf Club in St Paul on October 25th. The band recently announced their fifth album It Won’t Be Like This All The Time to be out January 18, 2019 via Rock Action Records.

We’ve seen the intense band a few times, the last time the band played their biggest venue in the area, opening for The Cure in June 2016: “The group’s last appearance in town was in the 250-person capacity 7th Street Entry, and now they were opening in a hockey arena, though their large and fuzzy sound seemed a better fit than expected.”

The Stress of Her Regard to open. We saw the local band in Mar 2015 and said, “The trio (and sometime with extra guitar help from Davis) sang song from their 2015 debut self-titled EP, including "Class Warfare", a song that they dedicated to "people who buys apple $17,000 watches."” ... so if you see the singer with an Apple watch, give him a hard time.

Beloved alternative band The Pixies sold out their Wednesday night show at the Palace Theatre, so they’ve added an additional show on Tuesday.

We’ve seen the band in 2014 and was blown away that they play a different setlist every night… so if you’ve already got Wednesday’s tickets, you can see a totally different show on Tuesday.

Mitski, who just announced she’s going on tour with Lorde, will open this show. Her fourth studio album Puberty 2 is out now on Dead Oceans.

Parisian seven-piece electronic big band Caravan Palace is back at the Skyway Theatre this Friday, July 14th.

We previously caught the band in June 2016 and noted, “The energy was tangibly palpable, and reciprocated between the performers and the audience in a way I hadn’t seen in ages. While the colorful and deep hues of electro-waves hypnotized the crowd, the simultaneous brilliance and authentic 20’s swing overtones enlivened everyone’s bones. The audience was truly enraptured. It felt almost sacred, a subtle letting down of our collective guards. Caravan Palace immediately gave us permission to enter into celebration; a wild and yet knowing aliveness took hold, and we danced. And danced. There were so many smiles throughout the audience all night it was infectious.”

Saint Paul’s Rivercentre rolls out the Hollywood-style red carpet this coming Sunday for one of the most anticipated events of the year, The Starkey Hearing Foundation 17^th Annual Awards Gala.

The So The World May Hear Awards Gala is one of the most acclaimed fundraising events in the country. Because of the generosity of gala sponsors and guests, Starkey Hearing Foundation is leading the world in the creation of a community-based hearing healthcare program and other global strategic hearing health initiatives.

This year’s honorees include Ben Affleck, director, actor, writer, producer, and founder of Eastern Congo Initiative; Esther Lungu, First Lady of Zambia; the Wilf Family Foundations; FedEx; and Scott Borchetta and Sandi Spika Borchetta of Big Machine Records and Music Has Value.

The evening’s entertainment, hosted by emcee Sinbad, will also include exclusive performances by Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler with his Nashville-based The Loving Mary Band; country singer/songwriter Darius Rucker; legendary CCR frontman and singer/songwriter John Fogerty; Zambian pop singer and philanthropist Portia Clark; 13-year-old singer/ukulele winner of America’s Got Talent Grace VanderWaal; and acclaimed Australian vocal group ARIA.

The gala itself is anticipated to generate more than $9 million, which will accelerate the pace and scope of Starkey Hearing Foundation missions and locally. Proceeds will also support grants for local and regional nonprofits.

All Time Low will be headlining the Palace Theatre in St Paul this Sunday, July 16th. Please note that this is an all-ages show so show up early to check out SWMRS, Waterparks and The Wrecks.

We previously caught The Wrecks  when they were only 11 months old in October 2016. By now, the Los Angeles alternative rock band are seasoned professionals.

As for bay area quartet SWMRS, we previously caught them in November 2016 and noted, “SWMRS’ music is a very upbeat, in-your-face, style of rock n roll. It’s got a classic sound but a unique feeling to it which makes it something memorable.”
