It’s hard to believe that last Tuesday’s Alex Lahey show, at the 7th Street Entry, was her fourth time as headliner in the area.

Opening the show was Liza Anne, with her drummer friend Allie (Allie Cuva). Allie is actually a songwriter herself and have gone on tour as the opener for the Katy Kirby and Sun June show in Mar 2022. In the middle of Liza’s set, Allie took up the guitar and sang one of her songs, “Long Vacation.”

We previously saw Liza with Lucy Dacus in Oct 2019. She had a full band, back in 2019, and the band was clearly undressed for Minneapolis’ weather. There were no complaints at Tuesday’s show, so I’m assuming Liza came to Minneapolis prepared.

Songs on Liza’s set included “I Shouldn't Ghost My Therapist” and, my favorite, the ironic upbeat song “Cheerleader”, which ended her set… complete with a pair of pom poms.

As the Australian songwriter Alex Lahey confessed, she loves Minneapolis… but the first time that she came here in 25 November 2017, she had no idea this place (Minneapolis) existed… let alone people living here. The second time she came back, in 01 August 2018, she was treated so warmly that she now looks forward to play the city and make sure Minneapolis is on her tour itinerary.

Tuesday’s night was no exception, with many fans screaming as soon as Lahey took the stage. As you can see from the setlist, some songs were from her new album The Answer Is Always Yes (Liberation Records). She even played a couple of requests, “You’ll Never Get Your Money Back” and “Wes Anderson”. The latter is a love song about going to see a Wes Anderson film, “We went to the movies because I know you like Wes Anderson. You held my hand the whole time, and, no joke, you have the softest skin.”

Based on her fanbase and her love for Minneapolis, it won’t be long when Alex Lahey will be back in town.

Australian singer/songwriter Julia Jacklin headlined the Fine Line Music Cafe, in Minneapolis, on Saturday night, to support her new album Pre Pleasure (Polyvinyl).

Opening the show was singer/songwriter Katy Kirby, fresh after a nearly sold-out six week tour with Waxahatchee.

Kirby’s latest album Cool Dry Place came out during the pandemic, in 2021, on Keeled Scales (via Secretly Distribution), so she was itching to play songs from the record, including the title track and its lead single, “Juniper”… the single actually has a special cocktail that Katy created. You can always enjoy the “Juniper's Last Word” cocktail at home. Requires Gin, Chartreuse, lemon juice, dandelion tea, and Orgeat… served with a mint garnish and some “disappointing news”. As you can tell, Kirby has a very depressing sense of humor.

Kirby’s very brief 25-min set was very quiet, and thankfully, the audience was very attentive, and hanging on every note. She ended her set with a song that “she’s never played live before”, even though the song was written in March 2020. The very short song is about wishing someone special a happy little birthday.

If the Fine Line show wasn’t sold out, it sure felt like it.

Julia Jacklin walked on stage by herself to Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On”… and the audience of mostly young women were singing along.

Jacklin has a very good local fanbase, thanks to being nominated for an ARIA award eight times, and strong support from local radio station The Current.

After one song solo, “Don't Let the Kids Win” and her full band joined her on stage. With the full band, all the songs sounded much fuller, almost rock songs, especially “to Perth, before the border closes”.

Despite the fact that Jacklin was recovering from losing her voice (she had to postpone Philadelphia and Boston’s shows), she still sounded great.

Of all the shows taking place in Minneapolis on September 19, you’re probably at this Tenacious D show at Surly Brewing Festival Field. Of course, it’s sold out, making this one of the hottest ticket in town.

Acclaimed rock duo Tenacious D will be celebrating their delayed celebration of their platinum-certified self-titled debut album, which came out in September 2001.

People love the band, thanks to their two superstars: funnyman Jack Black and Kyle Gass.

We last wrote about the band in our Sex Sells: Comedy Edition: “What is up with the censoring of Tenacious D's third album, Rize of the Phoenix? I had no issues with the album artwork, but I guess people are sensitive to these sort of things. It would've been less subtle if they had just called the album "Rise of the Penis", you know?”

This is The Gaslight Anthem’s first headline tour in four years… and, of course, they sold out the Fillmore in Minneapolis. The last time we heard from Belgium’s Tamino, he was enjoying some sold out shows in late 2018. That show was recorded and released as Live at Ancienne Belgique, featuring a cover of “Seasons” by Chris Cornell, and a special appearance by Radiohead’s Colin Greenwood, playing bass on “Indigo Night” and “So It Goes”.

We are told that Greenwood will be joining Tamino on this 2022 USA tour…. so Radiohead fans, here’s your chance to say hi.

Update: I don't want to get anyone's hopes up... although we were told Greenwood will be joining Tamino at the Fine Line, there are no official announcements (and given that Greenwood wasn't at the Philadelphia or other US shows), let's assume that, for now, it's just Tamino on a solo tour. Apology for the confusion.

Tamino’s forthcoming album Sahar will be out September 23rd on Djinn/Secretly Distribution.

Do you remember the viral song “The Wellerman”? The song was made famous by Nathan Evans on TikTok. Although the song is a traditional song, Evans probably heard it from Bristol-based a cappella musical group The Longest John, who recorded their version on their album Between Wind and Water. Even if Evans didn’t hear it from The Longest John… it’s still a great song, and you know this group will sing it on their setlist.
