American musician Julianna Barwick is on tour in support of her recent release Will, which came out March 8th on the Dead Oceans Label. Although some people call her music as ambient and experimental, I would call it simply breathtaking. Her voice that takes center stage and with the acoustics at the Cedar and it was a wonderful night.
Opening up was Mas Ysa an electronic composer named Thomas Arsenault, who has been showcasing his debut Saraph, released in July 2015 on Downtown Records.
Mas begins the show with talking to the crowd about his music and how it's the first time he has the two-unit system. The songs began and melded together one after another and there was only room to clap only when he stopped briefly to adjust one of his units to begin again, and once in a while he would address the crowd to thank them. ‘Look Up’ is a showcase of his masterwork of the electronic keyboards he has at his command and his voice that brings out the emotion in the song, very well done. ‘Running’ is a heartbeat of a song, relationships seem to be the theme of many of Mas's songs. This one is reminiscent of a Peter Gabriel sound. I look forward to hearing about this young man in the future and hopefully another stops in town.
Julianna Barwick, if I had one word to describe her music, I would call it “voice looping”, it is incredible to see what she is able to do with that voice. The music she makes intertwines with her voice so well that sometimes it's hard to figure out if the song is music or her voice that has taken over. The acoustics of the Cedar just made it even more enjoyable to listen to.
The show was a non-stop show that kept you guessing as to how the music was changing into the next song, I think she only stopped twice during the set to adjust something and say thank you to the crowd. I enjoy shows like this, because you are here to listen to the music and enjoy what the performer has to offer.
Highlights from the show would include ‘Beached’ because the piano mingling with her voice is so haunting to me, it was beautiful to listen to. If you enjoy Julianna's voice then I suggest listening to ‘Big Hollow’; hearing this live was so amazing it sent goosebumps all over and I couldn't help but sit mesmerized. there were several others but these two would be my pick for a highlight reel, I would have liked to talk with her after the show but people are busy and they must move on. I would recommend to anyone who likes ambient or a little light to come and enjoy a musical performance that will set your mind at ease and relax you for a very good time.
Notes on the Cedar, the theater like atmosphere make this a perfect venue for performers who have a sound that projects to the group around them. Almost like having your own surround sound system, it's a beautiful place. It was perfect fit for both Mas Ysa style and for the sound of Julianna.
