One thing that the band members of Darlingside and Field Guide agreed upon was The Wienery is the place for a pre-show bite and it was definitely cold in Minneapolis on Friday night.

Field Guide aka Dylan MacDonald opened the evening with a solo set on acoustic and electric guitar. He is from Winnipeg. So the bracing winter winds that greeted him had little effect.

MacDonald has a new album Field Guide Tape Redux that had a circuitous production route. First, the vocals and guitars were recorded near Riding Mountain National Park in a wood-stove heated cabin. Bass and drums were added in Breakglass Studios in Montreal. Then overdubbing in Monarch Studios in Vancouver.

Singer/songwriters tend to sometimes sink into their feelings, but MacDonald’s songs were light, open with rays of sunshine peeking through. Like in “Me & You”:

And oo I know we can't do this forever
Oo it feels good to be stuck together

“I’ll be honest with you,” MacDonald said halfway through his set. “I’m having a good time.”

He said it was good to be on the road and he found the time fruitful, already writing four new songs on tour. He even played one that he wrote the day before in which he tells a lover that: “I’m the sure thing” and “You are the only habit I don’t want to change.”

Darlingside is an Indie Folk band based out of Boston. They formed as a collective of seven members when attending Williams College, but eventually became a band of four in 2009 with Don Mitchell on banjo and guitar, Auyon Mukharji on mandolin and violin, Harris Paseltiner on guitar and cello and David Senft on bass and kick drums.

Senft is not on tour so Mukharji introduced Senft’s subs, they being Molly Parden on bass, Ben Burns on drums and Deni Hlavinka on keys. Mukharji even hilariously stated one nice thing he has done for the new members: He intended to lend his sewing kit to Burns. He politely asked for some of Hlavinka’s pretzels instead of stealing them. And he has yet to do anything nice for Parden.

Darlingside is on tour to support their latest album Everything is Alive, but Paseltiner said their tour also might as well be supporting Fish Pond Fish from 2020 for this is their first tour since the pandemic.

Darlingside has an interesting makeup as a band. Each member contributes to the songwriting. For a time they wrote at a climbing gym, but sustained too many injured fingers, which is inevitable in rock climbing, but not good when playing string instruments.

They also have no lead singer. Each band member may take a solo, but they are at their best when singing in vocal harmony, creating a sound that NPR’s All Songs Considered has described as “... exquisitely-arranged, literary-minded, baroque folk-pop.”

There is also a madrigal spirit in their construct. For a couple of songs they even eschewed their electric instruments and went into the crowd with only a guitar and violin to form a circle and sing. It was an intimate moment for no longer were there lights, a stage and separation. Instead a communal setting between the musicians and the crowd.

We caught Field Music in Mar 2010 and said, “As I previously mentioned, I've never heard of Field Music, and I mostly requested to see them live because I liked Clientele, thinking that they'll sound alike... but to be honest, I did not think they were much similar, besides from being both English. That's not to say that they were bad, just different from what I anticipated. They certainly have their fans, though. A friend I ran into was there specifically to see Field Music (then left half way into the Clientele's set), and people did keep shouting out requests. "Sit Tight!" someone in the audience said, in which Peter responded that they'd love to play them, "if only we knew how". ”

Someone stole an hour out of my time, I could've sworn it was an early show at the Cedar Cultural Center. If I have not mentioned it enough, and if you haven't been paying attention enough, the Cedar is a community-owned venue, catering to the more "NPR"-type of crowd. Maybe it's my perception, but whenever I see seats, I think it's a classy joint (a la the Orpheum or the State Theater, you know, venues that I don't fit in).

In the past two years, I've been to the Cedar more and more lately, only because they have been getting some excellent bands, particulary the types that comes from other countries. But, unfortunately, bands like The Clientele and Field Music does not really fit well, at least in my opinion, in these seated-type situation. I feel that they are more used to crowds dancing and being loud and cheery.

You see, the Cedar, the way it's built, it seems that any noises you make gets carried across the room - so you can hear a pin drop if you really listen. Often, the audience is quiet as a mouse, so to be polite to the band, but at the same time, hearing silence scares the crap out of these bands. They're thinking they're not doing "their thing" well.

Anyway, Field Music (official / myspace) came on stage exactly at 8:30, and they look like very clean-cut handsome young men. The way they dressed, their haircut, it just seems to me that by the end of their US national tour (on KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectic), that they'll be looking beaten & battered & unshaven!

It suddenly occurs to me that the two lads that look incredibly alike were brothers (and indeed they are Peter and David Brewis). They started off their set with three songs, all keyboard-driven, then Peter switch to the drums, while David took over electric guitar to play for a rotation of songs. Then Peter switched to guitars, while David went back to drums.

As I previously mentioned, I've never heard of Field Music, and I mostly requested to see them live because I liked Clientele, thinking that they'll sound alike... but to be honest, I did not think they were much similar, besides from being both English. That's not to say that they were bad, just different from what I anticipated.

 

Field Music - Each Time Is A New Time

They certainly have their fans, though. A friend I ran into was there specifically to see Field Music (then left half way into the Clientele's set), and people did keep shouting out requests. "Sit Tight!" someone in the audience said, in which Peter responded that they'd love to play them, "if only we knew how".

I did borrow a friend's copy of Tones of Town to listen to prior to the show, and I did not expect them to play any from that album - since their latest release, Field Music (Measure), is a double-album. But surprisingly, they started their set with "Give It Lose It Take It", followed by "A House Is Not a Home". Since I didn't have their new album, I only recognize the one song that was sent to me, "Each Time Is A New Time", which was done midway into their set.

They ended their show with "Tell Me Keep Me", which has an insane bassline. Possibly the best song that was played that night.

The Clientele - Cedar Cultural Center, Minneapolis 3-15-10

I have not seen The Clientele (official / myspace) since their 2007 tour effort for God Save the Clientele. From my poor memory, I thought they were louder and more "rock" than I had expected. So seeing them at the Cedar, well it sort of brought it down a notch. Also, I don't recall seeing or hearing much from the keyboardist/violinist Mel Draisey the last time at the 400 Bar (but, again, see my note about poor memory).

One thing is clear, singer Alasdair MacLean is a very technical guitar player. He's quite good at what he does, and it's evident on his "jam" song, "Lamplight". Towards the end of this song, there is a twenty-minute guitar solo that seems to build and build and build.

They did a selection of songs from their new album, Bonfires on the Heath, like "Harvest Time", "Never Anyone But You" and "I Wonder Who We Are".

Overall, a decent, semi-early gig (Cedar shows generally ends before 11:30), but that was fine, the Clientele looked worn and tired from being on the road for the last two or three days driving from Seattle, Washington to Minneapolis. I nearly went insane being stuck in a car for nearly twenty-four hours driving to Austin, so I don't know how they seem really with it.

PS, There DJ that played music between sets, which I think was DJ Transmission? Maybe it's because I'm an old geezer, but I knew all of his songs (Stereolab, The Smiths, Sandie Shaw, the Beatles, St Etienne, etc). He's clearly stuck in British 60s-90s.

What's coming up:

I asked to cover Field Music (official / myspace) because they are supporting The Clientele on this upcoming tour. Since I liked Clientele, it's assumed that I will enjoy Field Music.

Field Music are two brothers, Peter and David Brewis, out of Sunderland, England and just released a double album this year. I'm almost positive that they'll be playing quite a bit of those 20 new tracks on this tour, which they are kicking off in Minneapolis. If you're going to this show, come say hi!

Las Rubias del Norte

Las Rubias del Norte (official / myspace) is a band based out of New York, and generally known for their Latina-music.

Co-found of Las Rubias del Norte (the blondes from the north), Olivier Conan explains: "We use Latin music a little bit like the rest of the world uses rock’n’roll, because before rock’n’roll, there was the clave." (the rhythmic pattern that is the heart of Afro-Cuban/Latin music)

It should be interesting to hear "the clave" in their songs, as they are on a tiny tour promoting their third album, Ziguala.

They are promoting their new album, Spirit Youth to be out on May 18^th on Kanine Records, which singer Kurt Feldman explains is "is heavy but it’s not very shoegaze. The influence is there, but if you hear an actual 'shoegaze record', it doesn’t sound like us at all."

I'll keep that in mind at 7th Street.

Here We Go Magic

Here We Go Magic (myspace) is celebrating their self-titled debut album on Western Vinyl by doing a national tour.

Secretly Canadian liked them so much that they've signed the band on their label, with a pending sophomore album coming soon. I have agreed to see them in Minneapolis, to hear their "unique sound".

I am going to see if we can attempt an interview, but judging from my busy schedule and the lack of time to listen to their album... we'll see how it goes.
