3x GRAMMY® Award-nominated, Multi-Platinum pop-rock trio HANSON is doing a two-night residency at the Fillmore, in Minneapolis, on October 3 and 4, as part of their Underneath: Experience Tour 2024.

The brothers are world famous, selling over 16 million albums, with several #1 and top 40 singles in over 25 countries… these guys have a massive fanbase.

Hanson at Fillmore (19 Aug 2022)

We witness this for ourselves in Aug 2022: “As for Hanson, it’s hard to believe that they all started as a band in 1992 (although their big hit, “MMMbop” didn’t land until 1997), when they were still teenagers. In all that time, we’ve watched the band grow to selling over 16 million records. Now in 2022, as they celebrate their 30th anniversary as a band, all three brothers reflect on their grown (all with families of their own) and have released Red Green Blue. Each color belongs to each brother. And as you can see from their setlist, each brother dedicated a little section to their songs in the middle of their set.”

For these special double-night shows, the first night will feature Hanson doing an acoustic set, with Matthew Sweet as opener. Plus an afterparty with DJ Taylor Hanson. The second night will feature an electric set, with Phantom Planet as opener. This looks like an incredible experience, especially because we love all three bands!

FIDLAR is back! The band announced their first album Surviving the Dream, after a long five year wait. The album will arrive September 20, 2024, and to celebrate, the punk-ish band will be heading out on tour…. Stopping by the Varsity Theater, in Minneapolis, on October 4, 2024.

Frontman Zac Carper sums it up, “This record is about doubling down on what you love. For us, it’s about playing shows and making music. Coming back after a few years away, our intention was to self-make an album that the 3 of us are stoked on. We’re very very very pumped on it and what’s to come. These songs are meant to be heard live with the fellow FIDIOTS going off.”

We previously saw the band in May 2019 and said, “Fidlar is one of those bands that I could never get sick of watching live. They are high-energy and just have a very positive vibe to them. It doesn’t matter what you were worrying about when you walked into their show, the second they start playing you forget about everything except where you are and who you’re surrounded by. Nobody cares if you look like an idiot, nobody cares if you accidentally bump their drink, it’s smiles all around at a Fidlar show and I love that.”

Freak-pop vocalist/multi-instrumentalist/producer Sugar Pit to open. The latest single, “Sex Party,” available now via Atlantic Records/Good Luck Have Fun Records.

You may have seen Atlas on NBC’s The Voice in 2015, as he cover Ed Sheeran, The Neighborhood and Ednaswap. Since then he opened up for Magic City Hippies, even stopping by St Paul in Feb 2020. Best song on Atlas’ brief 35-min set was “Honeycomb”, a really catchy, ‘sweet’ dancey song.”

Local singer Meg Kirsch is having her debut EP release party at the Turf Club in St Paul on Wednesday, February 13th.

After nearly a decade of composing lyrics to Kenny G cassette tapes, Meg finally picked up a guitar and googled how to play. She’s been stitching words to her very own melodies ever since. She still really loves Kenny G.

There’s a great deal of honesty in Meg’s songs, which is entirely palpable when she plays. Regardless of venue, the room immediately softens when Meg starts singing.

Her debut EP “Street Cat”, due February 2019 is the product of process. Meg’s folk songwriting sensitivities come alive supported by indie rock instrumentation, fortified by synth and drum machines. She’s currently losing her mind in anticipation for this release and is pumped for you to hear it!

FIDLAR sold out the Varsity Theater in Minneapolis on November 19th. The band is touring in support of their new album Too (Mom+Pop Records).

The Frights

I had never heard of The Frights before but, after last night, they’re all I can think about. Their set felt genuine and it was nothing short of fun. Their music was a little like if Weezer and Modern Baseball had a kid that was raised by the angsty side of Brian Sella, the singer of The Front Bottoms. Their short set had more energy than most headlining acts that I see. I just couldn’t tear my eyes off the stage and just couldn’t stop myself from bouncing up and down to the beat.

SWMRS

SWMRS was the next to band to hit the stage. I saw these guys a while back and loved them but was disappointed by the way the crowd just stood there and didn’t really seem to care who SWMRS was or that there was even a band on the stage. Oh my how things have changed.

SWMRS’ music is a very upbeat, in-your-face, style of rock n roll. It’s got a classic sound but a unique feeling to it which makes it something memorable. Singer Cole Becker has this truly down to earth feel to him as he addresses the crowd. He felt more like a friend than the frontman of a popular band. When he spoke about his hate for Trump and his love for concerts being a safe place it felt real and genuine, like he truly cares. It’s that kind of personality and energy that turns a good set into a truly amazing set.

Capping off the already amazing night of music was Fidlar (stylized as FIDLAR). I had stumbled into their show about a year ago and instantly fell in love with their quirky look, upbeat music, and high energy show.

This four-piece has a way of commanding a crowd without saying a word. They didn’t have to tell the sold out crowd to jump or even bob their heads. Within the first note, the crowd was going wild. The energy in the venue was electric but it was a laid back kind of electric. Fidlar’s music leans towards the surf punk genre and the crowd definitely helps with that feeling. I couldn’t help but get lost in their sounds and the crowd.

Fidlar is one of those bands that I could never get sick of watching live. They are high-energy and just have a very positive vibe to them. It doesn’t matter what you were worrying about when you walked into their show, the second they start playing you forget about everything except where you are and who you’re surrounded by. Nobody cares if you look like an idiot, nobody cares if you accidentally bump their drink, it’s smiles all around at a Fidlar show and I love that.

Fidlar (stylized as FIDLAR) is back in town! The last time they were here in September 2015, we wrote, “The crowd sang, no they screamed, along to every word of every song. It didn't matter that they were being shoved up against the thigh high stage (which leaves some gnarly bruises), nobody missed a beat. With lyrics like "I drink cheap beer, so what, f**k you" what is there not to love?”

FIDLAR’s new record Too is out now on Mom+Pop.

Joining Fidlar will be SWMRS. The last time the band was in town, it was with WAVVES in September 2015 when they only had one single (‘Miley’).

Now the band’s debut Drive North was praised by Rolling Stone, calling them “Best New Artists 2016”. Drive North was produced by FIDLAR frontman Zac Carper, so it is easy to see why FIDLAR asked SWMRS to come on tour with them.

The Frights to open. Their debut album You Are Going To Hate This was also produced by Zac Carper (that dude gets around).

Amoeba Music says The Frights “make music that's a lot smarter than it would appear. Beneath the bratty, corrosive surface lies a rare tunefulness and dedication to dialing up rock's past...startlingly great at kicking out the garagey jams.”

What do you get when you mix an obsession with R. Kelly, a band full of Australian Jeff Spicoli's, a crowd full of college kids, and some good music? You get a great freaking night over at the Varsity Theater.

There are some shows that I go to that I'm more than happy to just sit back and enjoy. I do not typically look up bands before I go see them, I'd rather just be pleasantly (or unpleasantly) surprised. I regret not doing some research on the bands last night. The amount of energy the crowd had was unreal. I wanted to be part of it. But I was too busy trying to figure out why I had never heard of these bands before.

The opener was The Dune Rats from Australia. They looked and acted like Jeff Spicoli from Fast Times at Ridgemont High. I had a hard time figuring out if it was an act or if these guys were really just that stoned and drugged up. Regardless, they really were good and they had me captivated by their stage presence. They absolutely slayed a cover of "Blister in the Sun" by the Violent Femmes. Between the fast surf punk sound and the constant burping into the microphone, this band had me wanting to see more even though they were on stage for over forty minutes (that's a long time for an opener).

FIDLAR's stage set up alone triggered my interest. They had the typical banner hanging behind them but there was so much more. Each of the four members had a cut out of their face set up towards the back of the stage. The faces had light bulbs for eyes and smoke coming out of their mouths. The faces were super cool to look at and looked like they belonged in some indie art installation at some underground gallery. The best part of the stage? The fact that they had life size R. Kelly mannequins on either side of the stage. Don't ask me what the obsession is with R. Kelly because I have no idea. The mannequins had lights outlining their hands, feet and the ties around their necks. The only time there was ever really any interaction with them was when the bassist threw his bass around the neck of one of the R. Kelly's and continued to play an entire song with his arms wrapped around this R. Kelly mannequin.

FIDLAR. They spelled it out every time they said it. F-I-D-L-A-R (standing for F*** It Dog, Life's A Risk) is a skate punk/ garage punk band from California. They came on stage and instantly the crowd went crazy. When the music started, you had one option and one option only, you had to jump up and down.

The crowd never stopped. Okay, that's a lie. There was one point towards the end of the set with FIDLAR had everyone literally sit down on the ground. All they said is that we would know when to get up. I never thought it would happen but literally, everyone in the venue was sitting down on the ground (or at least crouching as low as they could go). Then all of a sudden it happen, the first note of their song "Cocaine" rang out and the room exploded. People jumped up and bodies started flying. There was constant movement, constant jumping, constant pushing, constant shoving, constant smiling.

The crowd sang, no they screamed, along to every word of every song. It didn't matter that they were being shoved up against the thigh high stage (which leaves some gnarly bruises), nobody missed a beat. With lyrics like "I drink cheap beer, so what, fuck you" what is there not to love? Their songs are short, sweet and to the point. They ended up playing 16 songs total but got them done in under an hour. As nice as it was to be home by 10:15 on a work night, I wish they would have played longer.

I had no clue what I was getting into last night and but I ended up never wanting to leave.

Like many bands in the Midwest at the moment, The Dear Hunter is touring to or after Chicago's Riot Fest.

The band's new album Act IV: Rebirth In Reprise recently came out on Cave & Canary Goods / Equal Vision Records, and marked the long-awaited continuation of the band's six album concept series chronicling the story of a boy at the turn of the century, only referred to as "The Dear Hunter."

The Dear Hunter is multi-instrumentalist, vocalist and songwriter Casey Crescenzo, drummer Nick Crescenzo, guitars Robert Parr, bassist Nick Sollecito, guitarist Maxwell Tousseau and keyboardist Andrew Brown.

The Orwells are opening up for Fidlar at the 7th Street Entry on Saturday night (November 2nd). You may recall how we described Fidlar's show as "sweat-dripped frenzy ", so this should be a fun night for all young people.

This five piece (Cousins Mario Cuomo on vocals, Dominic Corso on guitar, twins Grant on bass, Henry Brinner on drums, and Matt O’Keefe on guitar) have together since 2008, when they were in 9th grade… but we first came to know them as one of the few American (from Chicago) band to be featured in NME's Great Escape Showcase from earlier this year.

         The Entry was loud Friday night, all night. – It was not the kind of three band lineup you want to forget your earplugs to, if you usually bring them. The room was sweaty as well, but with a packed house, there wasn’t a lot you could do about that, except to move with the crowd.

CHEATAHS

         UK-based Cheatahs, led by Canadian Nathan Hewitt started the night with a brief 30 min. set, playing songs from their debut, Extended Plays, including the single ‘The Swan’, which is getting radio airplay on local public radio. Their 90s inspired blend of churning guitars and heavy melodies never quite got off the launching pad in a set that was enjoyable, but hardly memorable.

         Southern California’s FIDLAR followed, in support of their debut album on Mom & Pop, with an explosive 45min of punk/surf rock, set that threw the crowd immediately into a whipped up, sweat-dripped frenzy that swirled the crowd as one, from one wall edge to the opposite. From “Cheap Beer” to “Stoked and Broke” (“...cause that’s what we are”, intro'd singer Zac Carper) to “Cocaine” and “Got No Money”, the tempo kept chugging, the crowd moving, sweating and pogo-ing as one on the floor.

         “Max Can’t Surf”, “the Waiting Room” and “Wake Bake Skate”, kept the throngs moving, beer tossed in the air, crashing into a final farewell which was met by large applause, evident that much of the crowd was there to see FIDLAR, or at least ended up won over by them.

         After a brief intermission, fellow So Cal garage punk/pop cohorts Wavves blasted in with an equally relentless 52min set (no encore, apparently not ‘punk’ to do so). “Idiot” appropriately started their set, only to be hindered early on, by lack of a channel in singer Nathan Williams’ monitor speakers. "Bug," from 2011’s Life Sux EP followed by "Take on the World" next, before the band played its recent and maybe most accessible song to date, "Demon to Lean On”, from the new ‘Afraid of Heights’ which understandably got a noisy positive response, despite being so early into the set.

         Williams, who has had a sometimes notorious reputation in the past, seemed playful and relaxed over the course of the set- mocking random shout-outs from audience members, warbling through a verse of RHCP’s “Under the Bridge” and taking a red knit hat that someone had thrown on stage and literally biting it in half, before tossing it back into the crowd.

         Bassist Stephen Pope was his 80s blonde-maned best, holding down the lower end along with drummer Jacob Cooper, and guitarist Alex Gates roared away on guitar, sporting the remnants of a black left eye, that likely has some good story behind it. Even FIDLAR lead singer Zac Carper got into the festivities mid-set, leaping out from backstage to crowd surf and held high enough to scale the rafters in the small club, making for the inevitable “FIDLAR on the Roof” reference.

         Other highlights included “Sail to the Sun” and “Green Eyes”, ending with a jagged cover of Sonic Youth’s “100%” and ”Post Acid”, that left both band members and crowd exhausted, but exhilarated.
