This is a modification of a Christmas card illo I drew around 2003 or so. Originally the ornaments had the logos of the various companies I worked for that year and Carol was working as a character at Disney. I was about 55 pounds heavier and Carol's hair was darker then, but I think this drawing is still pretty swell. Happy Holidays to one and all!

This is a little doodle I surprised my wife Carol with this Christmas. My lady loves quite a few things, including (but not limited too) Tea, Tea cups, Minions, Sheep and Grumpy Cat. She's also partial to the colors pink and purple. So, I came up with this. I'm so happy that she really liked it. I can't do enough for this wonderful lady-- who is most definitely MY favorite thing.

After 17 years, imagine my surprise to actually be writing a second letter to your publication within one month's time. I am addressing my comments to Mark Engblom's letter (and, indirectly, to John Byrne's message to you by voice mail) regarding my comments about homage covers in general and the cover of Crisis on Infinite Earths #7 in particular.

First, Mark, thanks for bringing this particular subject out into the light. I originally had a statement in my letter pertaining to this exact case but decided to delete it because it made me sound self-serving and it took away from the intent of the letter. If I recall correctly (and I may be wrong, since I don't have a copy of my original letter in front of me), I said that the only conscious instances of my copying another artist's cover design were the Action Comics and The New Titans covers to which I referred. The incredible similarity between the Crisis #7 cover and the Uncanny X-Men ("Death of Phoenix") cover was simply one of those crazy coincidences that pop up in this industry from time to time. (And provide for great subjects of speculation in the recurring deja vu feature.)

For those who tuned in late: The Uncanny X-Men cover to which Engblom referred showed Cyclops cradling a dead Phoenix in a pose eerily similar to the one of Superman cradling the equally dead Supergirl on my later Crisis cover. When I was first approached about it by a fan years ago, I admit that I was bowled over. I hadn't read an issue of Uncanny X-Men in some time and could honestly not recall ever having seen John's cover, and I definitely didn't use it as my design guide. However, the layout was so startlingly similar that even I began to doubt whether or not I was inadvertently inspired by it.

For the record, my original inspiration for the cover was an early Jack Kirby cover showing Odin cradling Thor (MIGHTY THOR #127 (Apr 1966)). I wanted to get the same impact, but designed it totally on my own without actually referring to the Kirby piece to suit the needs of the comic book on which I was working. It's like having a super-hero fly and immediately imagining Curt Swan's Superman as an inspiration without deliberately aping his style or composition. If John (or anyone else for that matter) thinks I actually took my Crisis cover idea from him, I just want to say here and now that it wasn't so. If it were, I certainly would have acknowledged it. However, having been a fan of John's work for many years, it wouldn't surprise me if some of his design sense just rubbed off on me, much as it has with so many artists whom I have admired.

For Stan Lee's 100th birthday, DC Comics will publish Tales from Earth-6: A Celebration of Stan Lee

George Perez has always regretted that he had never worked with Stan Lee. The two was supposed to work together on the Just Imagine Stan Lee’s Crisis book in June 2000, but due to Lee's long delayed script/plot, George had to move on.

Lee actually didn’t write the Crisis story until 2002, and by that time, it was already too late, George had signed an exclusive contract with CrossGen.

Perez said every time he saw Stan Lee at a convention, Lee always asks Perez, “Why haven’t we worked together?”

Stan Lee died in 2018... but in celebration of Stan Lee's 100th birthday, DC Comics is planning to bring back Stan Lee's DC characters in the upcoming Tales from Earth-6: A Celebration of Stan Lee.

Martian Manhunter was almost traded for She-Hulk

The Marvel and DC Comics universes nearly traded major characters that almost resulted in She-Hulk joining the Justice League and Martian Manhunter becoming an Avenger. During the DC versus Marvel comic book crossover, there was significant talk about the story ending with a huge twist that would shake up both publishers, as it almost finished with the swap of powerful heroes. Thankfully, the deal never occurred, but it turned out to be more than just chatter and was a real discussion between Marvel and DC.

In an interview with GamesRadar from 2021, former DC publisher Paul Levitz revealed that there was a conversation about swapping Marvel and DC characters during the DC versus Marvel crossover. While admitting that talks might not have lasted more than one meeting and acknowledging the logistical difficulty of swapping heroes, the idea had some legs. Writer Ron Marz told the website that She-Hulk and Martian Manhunter deal was on the table, as both characters were "redundant" in their universe - as there were already multiple Hulks and J'onn J'onzz was very similar to Superman. Marz said the discussions happened, and writers tried to envision the story ending with a hero trade until legal departments at DC and Marvel relayed how difficult trading heroes would be.

Welcome to the George Perez Website version 5.1.

In August 2021, I found out that Google Sites (Classic), which was hosting the George Perez Website for the last 13 years, was shutting down and, in a hurry, I downloaded the archived content and temporarily moved to Typepad.

Occasionally, I would post some major updates to the website, but it wasn’t a priority, while I was still trying to figure out what to do. While I still wanted to create a comprehensive checklist… Typepad really wasn’t design as a static website. Since it’s designed as a blogging/news update, that is what I’ll be focusing on version 5.1.

While social media (Twitter, Facebook) has high engagement and instant feedback… I find that it’s almost impossible to search for historic posts. These websites aren’t interested in serving you old news. Plus, you’re almost required to have an account to do any sort of deep searching.

With Typepad, you can search old entries, and, because it’s open. There’s no privacy concern, and you can search the website anonymously and from country.

The problem right now, is that I don’t have enough content to make search that useful… but hopefully that might all change throughout the upcoming year. I am also hoping to raise the ranking on Google and Bing, so please bookmark thegeorgeperez.com or add the link to your website or blog. Heritage’s latest Comics & Comic Art Signature Auction brought in a total of $4,507,000 during the two-day event. Held on December 10-11, 2022, the auction was led by DC material, including covers by George Pérez and Mike Grell, and multiple lots featuring the Spectre.

Pérez’s Justice League of America #195 original cover showing a JLA/JSA crossover, and the Secret Society of Super-Villains sold for $288,000. That sale set a new record for highest price paid at auction for original art by Pérez. Moments after that cover sold, the Justice League of America #207 cover by Pérez that is packed with the JLA, JSA, All-Star Squadron, and Earth-3’s Crime Syndicate, hammered for $132,000.

It features a 2-page interview with George Pérez as well as some accompanying art. Includes its trading card that is taped to the cover (this is the way it came).
