Desert Daze 2019 Read More Desert Daze Ah, the mornings are beginning to be met by a cool autumn breeze...so this must mean desert festival season is under way! Desert Daze has been a myriad of magical atmospheric wonder along with the most entertaining of artists .... The Flaming Lips I think this was my first time seeing The Flaming Lips, but I could be wrong. Seems odd that this was "a very special Early Evening performance", since the band's psychedelic/space rock seems to work better at night … Stereolab Headliners include ESG, The Apples in Stereo, Superchunk, Waxahatchee, Laetitia Sadier (Stereolab), Sneaks, Elf Power, The Veldt, Pylon Reenactment Society, Eureka California and Tunabunny. … Devo Devo is in top form. They have their show down to an artform, complete with their own lights and fog machine and images on screen. With this sort of tight control over their images … Ween Anyway, Gene and Dean Ween are back, newly reunited as Ween, proving that they haven’t quite push the little daisies just yet. The reunion was announced last year (November 2015) … Wu-Tang Clan The entire Wu-Tang Clan (minus the ones that are no longer on Earth) is back in the studio with RZA for a new record this Fall. In the meantime, the group released "Family Reunion" to celebrate their 20th anniversary. … Temples Along their way to Minneapolis, Temples have been building huge buzz appearing at Great Escape 2013 and (recently) SXSW 2014. With all that excitement for the band, they sold out the Turf Club presale … Alvvays Opening up the show will be Alvvays, who we recently caught at the Turf Club on December 2014 and reported, "Although the band only has one album, you couldn’t ask for better surf-pop sweetness." … Pussy Riot A similar story happened with Russian punk group Pussy Riot being jailed for performing "Virgin Mary, Please Drive Putin Away" song in front of a church…

It is said that autumn is a time of rebirth, reflection and revitalization the soul. It’s a time of coziness, togetherness and ease as the cooler weather blankets our everyday lives. For some this means pumpkin spice lattes and dinners with friends by a fire and for some, it means an expansive weekend long music festival filled with a wonderland of modern-day rock legends. It means a perfectly curated playground of psychedelic art and communion with the promise of an all-around good freakin’ time. For some, the allurement of this season is the sprinkling of rock tunes on your tongue and a whole new version of Woodstock. Rock, my friends, is not dead.

This festival has undoubtably earned the title of a SoCal staple as each year gets seemingly better and better. Last year was challenging with the rain and the parking situation of a new venue, but the location is in the same stunning setting of Moreno Beach (situated beautifully between the San Jacinto and San Bernardino Mountains), so this year they’ve worked out the kinks. You can float peacefully on the lake while hearing your favorite bands christen the sky in the background. You can head on over to The Mystic Bazaar, a safe haven for those needing a breather from the enormity of the crowd energy. Here in this village holds all the yoga, tea ceremonies and sound baths your little heart can desire. The amenities and curated adornments here are endless, and there is always some amazement around every corner.

Now for the bands!

The gentleness of Friday starts out with Triptides, Wave, Frankie and the Witch Fingers and DIIV. Brooklyn’s DIIV released their third album, Deceiver, yesterday on the label Captured Tracks. The album is grungier than they’ve been in the past with a kind of Silverchair resemblance to it, so with this drop it is sure to be a highly anticipated performance. Singer-songwriter Jessica Pratt will be performing recent LP Quiet Signs at the Block at 4pm. Fred Armisen will do a comedy set in the mid-afternoon, followed by Atlas Sound and Crumb.

Saturday kicks off with Blackwater Holylight, the super heavy psych all-girl band from Portland. This group has all the elements to make you squirm and drool with delight, from folk-rock to grunge melodies to whispers of gothic intensity…and they’re mesmerizing onstage. Following acts are Klaus Johann Grobe, Altin Gün, Anika, Surfbort, Big Business and the true legends themselves- JJUUJJUU. Going into sunset time is DEVO, Cruel Diagnonals and Lumerians. Ween, Nick Hakim, and Pussy Riot. Temples highlight the evening.

The most massive act on the list is surely Wu-Tang Clan, performing their 36 Chambers LP on Sunday. The crew of DD this year (started by Phil Pirrone’s of JJUUJJUU, who always performs at least one killer set) were smart, because they saved a ton of the most exciting acts for the wee hours into Sunday evening. Also performing Sunday are Dead Meadow, Moses Sumney, The Black Angels, White Fence and Shintaro Sakamoto, to name a few.

Weather permitting (Tame Impala got rained out last year halfway through their set) this upcoming weekend will surely be one of mystery, wonderment and delight. The scintillating adventure of time travel or a portal to a new universe is always optional…but never enforced.

South London's Fat White Family got a lot of buzz for their insane live shows. The six-piece band just released their debut album Champagne Holocaust in the US on August 19th via Fat Possum.

To promote the US release, the band is doing a second North American tour (we missed them earlier this year for their post-SXSW tour).

The "Tour of Tenderness" starts on October 15th in Washington.

Chapel Hill's The White Octave broke up in 2001, but they have agreed to reunite to play Hopscotch Fest in Raleigh, NC on September 6th.

You may know that the band featured Stephen Pedersen, original member of legendary emo band, Cursive, and now member of Criteria. The other band members, Robert Biggers and Finn Cohen went on to form The Nein.

To celebrate the reunion, Broken Circles is re-releasing their debut LP Style No. 6312, remastered and on vinyl for the very first time.

The reissue will be out September 16th, 2014, but you can pre-order now.

New York City jazz expatriates and psychedelic aficionados Whitewash (not to be confused with Australian cover lover band Whitewash) will be releasing Fraud In Lisbon EP this September 16, 2014.

The secret origin of Whitewash was a meeting of Jon Ben-Menachem (bass) and Sam Thornton (guitar) met at NYU in their freshman year in 2012. They started playing Ween songs live as a duo, and after meeting drummer Evan Giazman in auditions for NYU jazz programs and Giazman's then-roommate Aram Demirdjian, Whitewash was formed.

Since the passing of Lou Reed, we've seen numerous tributes to the genius songwriter behind The Velvet Underground.

The latest is a project with new label Palm Zone Records with their VU tribute called Palm Zone - Session 1. One of the bands on the recording session is Terminal Gods, which they have recorded "White Light / White Heat" as one of four tracks on the EP.

Paul Carlin, Exec Producer for Palm Zone, says, "This has been something we’ve wanted to do for a number of years and when the opportunity came along to have Terminal Gods join the show, we didn’t hesitate. The three bands on the EP are very different and all add something special. Terminal Gods add dark drums, dank leather and raw energy."

This Tuesday, August 26th, The White Buffalo (aka singer/songwriter Jake Smith) will be making his late night TV performance debut on Jimmy Kimmel Live, in support of his latest album Shadows, Greys, and Evil Ways (Unison Music Group).

NPR All Songs Considered has called Jake Smith "an amazing storyteller" and the album traces the life story of Joey White, a small town outsider who goes to war and returns home only to find more violence as he struggles to readjust to a life away from the front lines and reconcile with the girl he left behind. The record debut in September 2013 in the Top 10 on Billboard's New Artist Chart.

Having been a big fan of Still Corners for a couple of years now, I am thrilled to finally get the chance to see them live. Originally scheduled to headline their own show at 7th St. Entry on June 6, they've now been slated to open for the Scottish band Chvrches at the Fine Line Music Cafe in Minneapolis on June 8.

They are touring in support of their brand new release 'Strange Pleasures', which was just released on May 7. The new songs are quite a bit more polished and produced in comparison with the songs on their previous release, 'Creatures of an Hour'. With 'Creatures' I immediately loved that their sound was right on par with a favorite band of mine, Broadcast. With 'Strange Pleasures', the vocals are more in the forefront and have a softer, breathy quality to them, flowing well with the breezy synths and guitar lines. I'm excited to see them play both the new and old songs and see how well they translate live.

Did you know that Drag City has a new imprint called God? (with the question mark)? Their first couple of releases will be a White Fence reissue and Scraper's self-titled 7", both coming out July 16, 2013.

I'm not quite sure why God? exist, but it would seem that their goal is to restore lost and forgotten gems.

WHITE FENCE - WHITE FENCE REISSUE
Tim Presley's been building a White Fence he can be proud of since back in 2010; his fourth trip to the other side of the fence just dropped and new pop music horizons continue to shimmer invitingly in all the music that he makes. If you walked into the party when the second album was playing or the new one, that's probably a great place to start too. But this first record is a REALLY good place to start. Tim's a veteran of a few bands before White Fence, like Darker My Love, and he's made records with Ty Segall and The Strange Boys too, but his own thing is very special - a foolproof and ever-morphing approach to writing songs by bringing the freshness of lysergic 60s visions into the present day.

Originally out on San Francisco's Make a Mess label and currently available on CD on Woodsist, White Fence keeps the hits coming - like shafts of sunlight through oblong holes in the ceiling. The tunes warp and ripple as if something had gone awry with the tape machine, and it has highs and lows - like cough syrup in a heat-warped July. Faint hints of British accent makes us feel that we're listening to Nobility Rock, where the singer is a king or someone like that, a Duke or an Earl, ruling over a bit of territory and considering what goes on in his land every day. The songs are these thoughts, and strands and scraps of chime and glimmer are carelessly strewn about in them, magically contriving this enchanted land with an insanely pure view of it all. And the tunes just keep coming at your brain, and hooking it.

SCRAPER - SCRAPER 7"
San Francisco's Scraper is a band throwing curves off a skate-punk kind of mound. Just some kids hanging out on the scene who formed a band out of nowhere. Of the 101 flavors currently coursing through the undead corpse of punk, these guys spray a gritty combination of grind 'n' groove that represents musical life at its most primal level. Then when you're sure they just started playing instruments the day before they recorded this, the overtones hit you - Scraper touched with Flipper and Urinals art-ghetto flair. You might even call it "minimalist," and the lyrics whip a satirical, surrealist-sychadelic angle on the inevitable social/romantic blues of the songs. Coming from the filth with no kind of irony or apology, this is just the sound of a way of life - and somehow, it sounds like fun!

MINNESOTA ARTISTS AGAINST THE MARRIAGE AMENDMENT

Local Minneapolis bands have come together to help raise money to fight a proposed constitutional amendment regarding the Marriage Rights. The bill would effectively ban same-sex marriage for couples in Minnesota; we want you to vote "NO" to the November bill.

All proceeds go directly to Minnesotans United for All Families, a non-partisan organization that works to educate the public on why marriage rights matter and how the amendment poses a threat to our community. I've previously mentioned Spectrals before, it looks like Louis Jones will be bringing his pop/surf-rock/oo-wop/garage rock to the states. Hopefully, if it all works out, Amy will be covering his appearance at First Avenue on 4/16.

His debut album, Bad Penny, is loved by various critics. BBC is calling it "terrific stuff from a songwriter of any age", while Pitchfork said "It's music pleasant enough to carry intergenerational appeal, characterized by a youthful spirit but rooted in a classic sound." Folks, he's 21 years old.

I first heard about Brooklyn based We Are Augustines last September, with their debut album Rise Ye Sunken Ships. At the tim, Rolling Stones was calling them "Bands To Watch in 2011".

Since then, they band associated themselves with UK bands, including touring with Glasvegas (which we covered) and now, it looks like they are hanging out with Band of Skulls (who we also covered). I guess by sheer association, they should be good, or at least W♥M would like.

We Are Augustines are playing at Fine Line Café on April 4th.

I was told that Providence, Rhode Island-based duo Brown Bird (MorganEve Swain and David Lamb) are coming to Minneapolis, opening for Trampled By Turtles on April 24th at the 7th Street Entry. Did I read that right? There is NO WAY Trample by Turtles would even play a tiny venue like 7th Street, having seen them sell out its bigger brother First Avenue without a sweat. According to First Ave's calendar, Horse Feathers are the headliner.

Just to clarify, they are supporting Trample by Turtles, but later in May.

Okay, their tour dates are actually until May, but I'm putting them down in this tour preview.

We've mentioned Ty Segall a few times, including seeing them at NXNE last year.

It looks like he's back, this time, teaming up with White Fence (who we previously written about). Ty Segall & White Fence is basically Segall and Tim Presley, but with a full band (with Sean Presley and Mikael Cronin). Their album, Hair, will be coming out April 24th via Drag City Records.

White Fence is playing with the Shins at Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium (4/22) and the previously mentioned Woodsist Fest (8/4).

White Mystery is a red-headed brother/sister duo from Chicago. They announced that they have a new album called Blood & Venom, to be released April 20^th, but what I have for review is their debut self-titled debut, released last year.

I have to say, based on hearing their album, I hope they are just as lively and fun when they play live. I just get that impression from hearing the raw energy on the record. I just hope that people don't dismiss White Mystery as a copy of The White Stripes, another 'white'/red band with the White family of "husband"/"wife" team of guitars and drums, because I'll admit the similarities are there.

Most of the self-titled features sister Alex on vocals, but brother Francis sometimes does backup (see "Overwhelmed", "White Widow", "Aaron", and "Switch It Off") and even sings a section on "Don't Hold My Hand". Like garage punk bands, their songs are kept really short, most songs runs under three minutes, but that's okay, considering these high-voltage songs pack a lot in.

The next time they're in Minneapolis, I'll definitely be there to see them. In the meantime, here are their tour dates:

White Laces: Motorik Twilight

Described as "angular spirit warriors", this band released their debut White Laces EP on January 18^th (although I did read that they have put together a few cassette releases).

I'll be completely honest here, I was not all that impressed with the production work on the EP. Vocals sounds muddy, and music sounds very distant. Production aside, this is standard garage rock, maybe a little influenced by UK shoegaze bands.

Best song on the EP is "Sick of Summer" (mostly for the drum buildup towards the end) and "Psykick Healing" (for the guitar work), but, overall, the band sounds very young, this may be a good thing as they can only grow from here. They are playing at SXSW this year, which I'll be attending - so perhaps I'll tell a different story if I see them live.

If anything, White Fence's album, ...Is Growing Faith (released January 10^th) does an amazing job at reproducing that jangley sixties sound, so much ... that you wonder what Tim Presley is doing in the 21st century. I believe this is his second album under the White Fence name, the debut was a self-titled released in 2010. I'm not sure why the name change, considering that Presley have made a name for himself with his 60s pyschedelia inspired band, Darker My Love.

I really like the intro song, "And By Always", which sounds like a woman is singing on this reverse guitar playing song. I also like it when Presley focus more on lyrics and minimal acoustics, in particular "You Can't Put Your Arms Around a Memory".

Most of the album plays pretty straight album, except for "The Mexican Twins/Life is...Too $hort". This isn't so much a song, more like ranting poetry for the first part, followed by the "Life is too short" portion.

If you like sixties pop rock, with lots of heady lyrics, you'll love White Fence. You can find out details about obtaining the album through White Fence's record label, Woodist Records.
