Playing from setlists written with sharpie markers on backstage paper plates, two bands roared into Minneapolis’ 7th St. Entry, that found even Spider-Man approving--
A biting cold whipped snow around the corridor streets of downtown Minneapolis, in between snowstorms during one of these dog days of winter, as Los Angeles-based Warbly Jets returned to the building, to bring some collective warmth to the gathered crowd.
Though hailing from relatively nearby Detroit, opening garage psych alt-rock trio Moonwalks (Kerrigan Pearce- drums; Kate Gutwald- bass; Jacob Dean-guitar/vocals) was making their first local appearance, supporting last January’s second full-length, In Light (The Scales in the Frame) (on Stolen Body Records).
As evidenced on songs like ‘Natural Possession’, their sound is a swirling mix of retro space rock, the garage of Ravonettes, and trippy-alt that would fit in well at The Black Angels annual Psych Fest, with their wardrobe being slightly ‘60s as well, and the same with Dean’s Brian Jones-esque pageboy haircut.
There is also an underlying sense of mystery to the band too, and new music must be on the near-horizon, as most of the song titles indicated on the sharpie-d setlist scrawled on a paper plate, were not from previous albums.
After a brief set change, Los Angles band Warbly Jets took to the stage for a short but satisfying forty-minute, encore-less set, in support of their just-released Propanganda EP (Rebel Union Recordings).
The foursome (Samuel Shea – guitar/vocals; Julien O'Neill – synth; Dan Gerbang – bass and Justin Goings – drums) more than impressed us in late 2017 when they opened for Liam Gallagher in the room next door, and we were eager to see them back and with new music.
The band has only been in existence since 2015, and is still developing their musical identity, moving forward from the more traditional straight-ahead rock into incorporating some dark electronica and “found sound” samples, coupled with socially-charged and slightly dystopian lyrics, resulting in a more-challenging Kasabian-like sound.
Like their name implies, the songs maintain an ever-present velocity, propelling the volume and tempo beginning with opener, ‘The Lowdown’ with singer Shea then stalking the stage back and forth during a driving ‘Alive’. A cosplaying fan up front, dressed in a full Spider-Man costume (?!) went crazy during the song, one that is featured as the intro theme song of the Marvel hero’s latest Playstation game.
Multi-instrumentalist O’Neill seemed continually highly focused behind his sets of keyboards, pedals, and effect boards, like a sonic chemist moving about to mix sonic batches for each song, as needed.
“There’s a new day on the rise and if our time ain’t comin' now, it ain’t comin’ ever” Shea sings on the EP’s title track, mirroring the band itself being on the very cusp of potentially much wider awareness and even greater success. “Last time we were here, we played next door” Shea remembered, “but this is more personal, this is more about all of us together tonight”.
The gun control theme of the new ‘Cool Kill Machine’ remains (unfortunately) still a timely subject in our daily news headlines, with Shea starkly emoting “kill, kill, kill” on the song chorus and the throb of the unreleased ‘1000 Pounds’ and the set-closing ‘Destruction FM’, gives a further idea of how the new full-length will sound.
With a growing audience worldwide, Warbly Jets returns to its West Coast home for a few dates, before heading back to the Far East for a headlining tour in China and Taiwan. They remain a band still challenging their own sonic notions in evolving their still-developing sound, seemingly untethered by any traditional rules and formats- with no allegiance to the game.
