Prior to stopping by Chicago’s Lollapalooza, Die Antwoord will doing a warmup show at the Myth in Maplewood (St Paul), Minnesota.

Die Antwoord’s fourth album, Mount Ninji & Da Nice Time Kid, will be out September 16th.

This year’s Go Fest will take place at First Avenue’s mainroom (its inaugural 2015 show was previously held at Target Field) and will feature headliner Miike Snow.

Miike Snow’s new album is called iii and came out March 4th, via Atlantic Records.

Compared to last year’s event, this year is a little scaled down - and that’s okay. From 8 bands to 4, moving start time from 4pm to 7pm is a smarter move for everyone involved. Also, the smaller First Avenue (compared to Target Field) will be a better experience.

Looking over the artist listing, it would seem Go 96.3 radio is booking mostly electronica/dance music for this upcoming show.

Other notable shows taking place on Saturday, 07/30/16:

Supergroup The Baseball Project (featuring members from Minus 5 and R.E.M.) will be headlining the Turf Club in St Paul. We previously saw them in 2014 and wrote that they only sang baseball songs (except for the double encore, of course). Show is $15, and according to turfclub.net, the Wooldridge Brothers (Scott and Brian Wooldridge) to open. R.E.M.’s Mike Mill previously appeared with the brothers at Big Star’s Third show in 2015.

Goo Goo Dolls, along with Collective Soul, and Tribe Society will be playing at Mystic Lake Casino in Prior Lake. We previously saw Goo Goo’s frontman John Rzeznik at a free acoustic promo appearance earlier in the month (16 June 2016). Tickets are $29 - $65.

Wye Oak (Jenn Wasner and Andy Stack) is back on tour, promoting their latest Tween album. The release is a collection of eight songs born, raised, and almost abandoned for various reasons during the years between 2011’s breakthrough Civilian and 2014’s reinvention-of-sorts, Shriek. Digital copies available now, but if you’re a physical record fan, you’ll have to wait until August 5th (or perhaps pick it up at their upcoming show at the Fine Line Music Café this Sunday, July 31st).

North Carolina’s Tuskha will open the show. This is the music project from Bowerbirds’ singer/guitarist Phil Moore.

This show is a bit confusing, as when first announced, I thought this was local band Vats (who changed their names to The Cult of Lip one year ago on July 2015).

As it were, this is Seattle’s Vats. The trio (Sarah, Gabe, and JJ) is out touring for the Summer in support of their debut album Green Glass Room via End of Time Records!

They will be stopping in St Paul’s River Boat Grill. The restaurant literally on the Mississippi River and is actually next to the Covington Inn Bed and Breakfast (on the river). The address for the River Boat Grill is: 100 Yacht Club Rd W, Saint Paul, Minnesota.

There might be more than just a few transcendent moments when Protomartyr take over the Entry on the evening of March 12th. Last October, the Detroit quartet released their third LP The Agent Intellect, a collection of dark, punchy post-punk that has made quite a splash with fans and found its way onto many year-end lists. I can’t wait to watch frontman Joe Casey, gifted with slate-gray vocal chords that reference both Black Francis and Nick Cave, spit out lyrics like, “Your passive mind that thinks/‘Perhaps my ship's come in’/That's not gonna save you, man/That's not gonna save you, man” while guitarist Greg Ahee creates a melody that shivers and flows. The song is “Dope Cloud” - go listen! Then go see Protomartyr on Saturday March 12th!

Opening are The Cult of Lip (formerly Vats) and Minneapolis four piece DIIE who are described as a tasty blend of psych-rock and desert jazz with an emphasis on shredding. Yesssssssssss.

Punk band Titus Andronicus (not to be confused with the William Shakespeare’s play) will be in town in support of their latest album The Most Lamentable Tragedy, which came out in 2015 via Merge Records.

Opening up will be local favorite Craig Finn (singer of The Hold Steady). We’ve seen Finn several times and will tell you that he has a ton of fans locally in the Minneapolis/St Paul area. I would not be surprise to find out that more than half the audience were there for Finn, at this coming Saturday show.

Roger Clyne and The Peacemakers will be headlining a fundraiser for cystic fibrosis this Saturday, March 12th. The event is at the Muse Event Center, which is right next to the Aria, in Minneapolis. Additional details at withonebreath.org

We previously caught Clyne in November 2015 and wrote that Clyne will play old The Refreshments songs: “It wasn’t just Refreshments tunes getting folks riled up; the Peacemakers have been happily pumping out catchy Western-flavored records for years. The audience worked up a sweat for rockers like “Americano” and “I Don’t Need Another Thrill” (from 2004’s Americano!) and “Never Thought” (1999’s Honky Tonk Union) while the slower-paced set closer “Green & Dumb” cooled things down to a gentle sway (the encore also included “Maybe We Should Fall In Love”.) The band’s new album The Independent was also well-represented within the setlist: “I Ain’t Got the Words,” “California Breakdown,” and “5x5” sounded lively and crisp, so much better in person.”

“Thanks for coming out on a Tuesday night,” Ringo Deathstarr’s Elliott Frazier said on stage. When someone in the audience shouted out, “Thursday!”, Frazier followed with, “What did I say? Did I stutter? Honestly don't know what f****** day it is.”

That’s the spirit that Ringo Deathstarr was in at the Turf Club in St Paul, last night (March 3rd). The Texan band is touring in support of their new Pure Mood album.

As you can see from the Turf Club show poster, it lists fellow Austin band Future Death as part of the show, however due to some other commitments, Future Death decided to play the Des Moines Social Club on this night instead.

The Cult of Lip

The evening started off with The Cult of Lip (previously known as Vats). Since there was one less band on the bill, it seemed like everyone else had extra time to play their set. The band had little to say in their 30-min set, save for “Thanks for coming out. We have a 7” coming out soon. That’s all I have to say.” The Cult of Lip currently has a self-titled cassette, limited to 100 copies.

Flavor Crystals

Next up was Flavor Crystals, who we previously caught in 2013. We noted that they played hard psych/kraut rock and with very little emphasis on lyrics. I guess the reason for this, as we witnessed last night was that the singer Josh Richardson actually has trouble remembering lyrics, etc.

The band had pages and pages of handwritten lyrics on stage, and when asked about it later, Richardson explained that they were a “security blanket” and most of these songs were new, from their recently released The Shiver of the Flavor Crystals... including set intro “Eyes Go White” and set closer “Neuzesandfly”.

Hearing these new songs, I felt they were more melodic now... and the music, at times, sounded very space rock.

A few weeks into Ringo Deathstarr’s 2016 tour, someone stole their luggage and left the band with just the clothes off their back. They reached out to their fans that they needed clothes and the response was so overwhelming that they had to write, “We do not need any more clothes! We got new suitcases and they are stuffed to the gills! We have no more space!”

A typical sampling of Ringo Deathstarr’s music feels like they listened to a lot of Ride, maybe some Black Rebel Motorcycle Club... and definitely plenty of My Bloody Valentine.

It was a pretty good turnout for a late, late Thursday night. Ringo Deathstarr took the stage at 11pm and played tracks from their latest Pure Mood, including lead single “Guilt” (which we played on the last podcast). They ended their 55-min set with a “Special song for you” called “Summertime”.

The song is a little special, as it is the b-side to their first 7” In Love in 2009. The single was later compiled in the Sparkler release in 2011.

We caught Julia Holter in 2013 and noted that “You can tell that Holter love those old orchestra/big band/jazz sound from an earlier era, as she produced that type of genre with her band, consisting of saxophone, cello, violin, keyboard, and drums.”

This time Holter is back, promoting her fourth studio album Have You In My Wilderness, and she’s quite excited to the new album on cassette - available exclusively on her upcoming with Circuit des Yeux.

Country singer and fiddler Carrie Rodriguez is coming back to the Cedar Cultural Center next Tuesday, March 1st.

The current tour is for Rodriguez's highly anticipated album, Lola, which came out February 19th, 2016, via Luz Records/Thirty Tigers.

The new album was inspired by 1940s-era recordings of her San Antonio-born great aunt Eva Garza, and featured some songs in English, Spanish and “Spanglish.”

The Roe Family Singers will open the show.

Local favorite Poliça will be taking over Minneapolis for the next three days (March 2nd to March 4th). Of course, they’re all sold out.

The first show at the Turf Club in St Paul will feature openers Sarah White and Fraea.

The second show will be at the small 7th Street Entry, with openers Dizzy Fae and Izell Pyramid.

The third show will be at the larger main room of First Avenue, with openers Fog (not to be confused with England’s The Fog) and Kill the Vultures.

You may recall that we caught the band at the Lowertown Line earlier in February and heard the band play the entire new album United Crushers live. Expect a similar setlist for these three local shows.

The last time we heard about Emily Wells, she was doing some crazy collaboration with our favorite producer Dan the Automator. The result was a record called Pillowfight which came out in 2013 via Bulk Recordings. Prior to this, we caught Wells with Dark Dark Dark at the Cedar (05 Oct 2012) and with PCP at the Cedar (01 May 2012).

Wells is currently back in the city, promoting her 2016 album Promise (Thesis & Instinct).

New York’s Lorna Dune will open.

Austin shoegazing band Ringo Deathstarr just came through town at the Turf Club last Wednesday, July 29th.

Brilliant Beast

Opening up the show was Brilliant Beast, featuring siblings Hannah and Jordan (who was apparently a massive Morrissey fan). They recently released a split EP with fellow Minneapolis band Fury Things, but they did mentioned that they have new songs ... currently in the middle of mixing it, but should be available in early Fall (and probably will be released by Guilt Ridden Pop).

Vats

Hannah was pulling double duty, as she also played in Vats, but as of July 31st, they've decided to changed their name to The Cult of Lip.

I know their setlist shows eight songs, but in reality, I believe they only played six songs because the singer admitted, "I still can't read the set list."

All these bands, including trio Ringo Deathstarr (guitarist Elliott Frazier, bassist Alex Gehring, and drummer Daniel Coborn) were heavily influenced by My Bloody Valentine or The Jesus and Mary Chain. In the case of Ringo, I can also hear similarities to BRMC... so if you like those bands, you'll find a lot to love with Ringo Deathstarr.

Ringo Deathstarr requested the lights to be turned down to dark blood red... so photos didn't turn out so great. Everyone who came to the show knew the band, and if the band didn't know the audience, they made themselves available to meet and greet everyone who wanted to say hi.

The first part of their set had familiar songs, "Kaleidoscope" and "Fifteen", etc., but the second half of their set was basically new songs, which Alex said was going to be on a forthcoming album, available in December 2015.

Although the new songs were unfamiliar to fans, that still did not keep them from trying to mosh to their latter songs.

The band played about an hour of music and we thought they were coming back for the encore, but instead, the show was cut a little short.

Looking forward to hearing more of Ringo Deathstarr's upcoming album... in the meantime, if you live in Austin, check out some of their upcoming show - including Alex's birthday party this August 6th.
