We recently caught Silversun Pickups in May 2016 with Foals, and wrote, “This alternative rock band from Los Angeles has been around for a while and seem to finally be getting the recognition they deserve. They released Better Nature last year and played a lot of songs off of that but did not forget about their three previous releases.”

Norwegian singer Sondre Lerche (currently based in New York City) will be stopping by the 7th Street Entry tomorrow (April 25th), touring in support of his eighth studio album Pleasure (PLZ label). The new record is the followup to Lerche’s “divorce” album from Mona Fastwold.

We previously caught Lerche in New York in 2014 and wrote, “The crowd seemed to be quite enthusiastic, which Lerche most definitely fed off of and gave the audience several opportunities to sing along. Combining both older songs like “Sleep on Needles,” and “Two Way Monologue” with new songs from the just-released album like “Bad Law” and “Legends”, the crowd got to revel in the oldies and enjoy the experiencing the new material live.”

04/28/17 The xx has a sold out show at the new Palace Theatre in St Paul. The trio’s third album I See You debut at #1 in the UK and #2 in the US album charts. The last time we saw the xx, it was in 2012 and we said, “The xx show was a little somber, with flashing lights at the appropriate beats. I was expecting more dancing from the audience, but for the most part, they kept very still. Which is cool, as someone pointed out that it was nice to see people actually listening and watching the show on stage.” Sampha to open. $49.50.

San Francisco's Tycho is currently on their 2015 tour, stopping by First Avenue in Minneapolis, on Sunday, March 22nd.

Beacon

Opening up the show was Beacon, a duo (Thomas Mullarney III and Jacob Gossett) from Brooklyn, New York, playing some tracks from L1 EP (Ghostly International) to near darkness with a custom film, projected onto the band.

We've seen the electronic duo before, last December 2012, and I wrote that they had "big buzz." While at the time, I said they were 'thunderous rap bass', they seem to have taken it down a notch to more minimalistic and atmospheric.... at least based on hearing them perform on Sunday.

Mullarney said that about three years ago, Tycho took them on tour and was honored to be back, as part of their journey with Tycho. Since the band just came from SXSW 2015, they said they were glad to not play in the rain and mud... that they were just happy to be indoors (despite the snowstorm taking place outside).

Scott Hansen, or probably better known as Tycho is back in Minneapolis. The band was recently in Minneapolis last April 2014, promoting Awake, which Hansen described as "the first true Tycho record."

According to Hansen regarding the April 2014 show, "almost didn't happen!" He didn't go into details about "crazy story" on stage, but I suspect it was likely due to transportation issues. In fact, Hansen rarely spoke at all, instead letting his music speak for him.

The thing about Tycho is that they are an instrumental band, and their music feels like it is taking its audience on a long journey. The videos projected on the screen behind them also help us move and understand the songs. I am assuming visuals were also the handiwork of Hansen, who is also a photographer and graphic designer by the name of ISO50.

While I wondered why Tycho is back in town so soon (especially because they don't have any new material), obviously their fans didn't questioned it, as the main room was nearly sold out, if not sold out, for last Sunday.

Tycho's latest Awake is out now on Ghostly International.

We caught Tycho at the Varsity Theater in 2012, which, at the time, I was surprised that they've already been to Minneapolis five times at that point! Although the band was previously in Minneapolis in April (with Gems), they like the city enough to come back next week, March 22nd, in support of their latest album Awake, which frontman Scott Hansen said, "This is, in many ways, the first true Tycho record."

Opening up for Tycho will be Brooklyn's Beacon (Thomas Mullarney and Jacob Gossett). We caught the duo in 2012 and noted that they had a huge buzz when they recently signed to the Ghostly International label.

One of my favorite bands, The Decemberists will be in town at Northrop Auditorium next Tuesday. Naturally the band sold out most of their 2015 tour... truly it is both a 'terrible world' if you have not purchased tickets. We previously mentioned that the band is back with their seventh studio album, What a Terrible World, What a Beautiful World (out now on Capitol Records).

Opening up the show will be Alvvays, who we recently caught at the Turf Club on December 2014 and reported, "Although the band only has one album, you couldn’t ask for better surf-pop sweetness."

Tycho at The Varsity Theater, Minneapolis (07/05/12)

Read More Tycho Tycho's latest album, Dive, is out now on Ghostly International. The title track on Tycho's LP is said to have his first song to feature a prominent guest musician, guitarist Zac Brown.

Tycho brought their ambient live music to the Varsity Theater in Minneapolis last night, July 5th, 2012.

Onuinu

Opening was Onuinu (as heard, it's pronounced "on-noo-in-noo"), the latest project from Portland's Dorian Duvall. I had no idea what to expect, but I actually really enjoyed his set. For a duo out of Portland, they sure sound like they belong to the Brooklyn music scene. They ended their set with their forthcoming video/single for "Happy Home".

It was Tycho's fifth time in Minneapolis, and boy, they had such a healthy turnout for the show. Most of the audience was at the college-age, lots of make-out young couples in the crowd and hippies-ish potheads. On random inquiries by Varsity's manager, one person said they heard Tycho's music via their friends and one person said they discovered him on the Hype Machine (which we are featured on).

Anyway, Tycho didn't have a setlist, but based on the music having to be synced directly with the movie projected in the background, that it's a safe bet that they play the same set every night for this new tour. There was very little banter between songs (at least for the songs I saw), so it was awkward quiet when the show goes dark (as the next movie is queued up).

You can tell that the whole thing, the sound and visuals, were specifically designed by Tycho himself. As it turned out Scott Hansen (aka Tycho) is photographer and designer. Although they had no lyrics for their songs (pre-recorded ethereal background vocals doesn't count), the video on screen often ties directly to the song. For instance, for "A Walk", you are shown a woman in a sheet walking in the desert and the scene changes accordingly when the music shifts.

Unlike DJs that plays and mixes this type of downbeat techno, it was nice to see that Tycho can produce their music using traditional guitars and drums and a little programming.

Tycho is currently on tour for their album, Dive, which is out now on Ghostly International.

TRIPLE THREAT THURSDAY:

Mandolin Orange at Cedar Cultural Center (07/05/12) It was Mandolin Orange's "first time ever" in Minnesota. This bluegrassy folksy trio also played at the "first ever indoors Cedar Outdoors" event. It wasn't that hot outside, but the volunteers at the Cedar decided to have the show inside. I think this is overall a good thing, because the venue's sound is much, much better than the outside setup (plus you also open yourself up to a larger capacity). Highlight of their set for me was "Poor Boy Poor Me". They had a double set, but I only stayed for the first one because I had prior commitments. He's My Brother, She's My Sister at 400 Bar (07/05/12) Already impressed with their previous Minneapolis appearance at the Cabooze, I really wanted to see them as headliner. Unfortunately, due to other commitments, I got in late at the 400 Bar. I spent the majority of their show in the back (which is fine because it gets incredibly hot in the front with all the fans packed in and dancing and stomping). The pictures turned out terrible from the distance, so I'll also described the setup - the drums and the women were dressed in a fourth of July-inspired colors. They had two songs for the encore, one of which I recognized as "Straight Shooter". I've written about both Grandaddy and Earlimart before, so I was quite pleased to hear that members from both bands are in a new band called Admiral Radley. This is pretty exciting, considering that Spin Magazine recently debut their song, "Ghost of Syllables".

Their album, I Heart California, will be in stores July 13th, while the digital version will be made available July 1st. Be sure to check out the deluxe, limited edition package of their album.

Tycho's latest album, Dive, is out now on Ghostly International. The title track on Tycho's LP is said to have his first song to feature a prominent guest musician, guitarist Zac Brown. The song also spawn a single from Ghostly and recently remixed by Toronto's Memoryhouse (which you can hear via Soundcloud).

He's currently on tour in support of his album, and I'll see him this July 5th.

Opening up for Tycho is Onuinu, the latest project from Portland's Dorian Duvall. Dorian described his music as "Disco-Hop", which should be fun to check out.

Seattle's Origami Ghosts is set to release their new LP called It Doesn't Exist for July 7th. The driving force behind Origami Ghosts is John Paul Scesniak, who has been writing hundreds of songs since the 90s.

The Tucson Weekly described the music as "earnest" and "not-quite-singing voice".

Expect to catch Scesniak's "childlike imagination" or a revolving cast of session musicians (like cellist, accordionist, drummers, bassists, etc) as they embark on tour to promote the It Doesn't Exist album.

LOVETT ghostofoldhighways.com "Ghost of Old Highways" is a short film based on the song by Lovett. It's only 10 minutes long and I felt it was just an extended music video, complete with dream-like state of the Civil War, a bloody bride, and lots of guns. I guess I'm just confused why it had won so many film awards; surely there are better short films? By the numbers: "Ghost Of Old Highways" has now screened in 20 cities, 4 countries, and won 9 film festival awards in 2012 including Best Film, Best Score, and Best Cinematography. COMMUNIST DAUGHTER facebook.com Minneapolis' Communist Daughter just premiered "Ghosts" on Noisey/Vice. The song came from their forthcoming EP, Lions & Lambs. Songwriter Johnny Solomon had something deep to say about the song: "The song's about saying goodbye to the life I thought I had to live … But it's not about winning that struggle; it's about beginning that struggle…." Only to bring it back down to earth and insists that it could also be "just a song by a band in Minnesota." Look for their EP, Lions & Lambs, to come out July 10th on Grain Belt Records.

I love EMI Records, as do many of you. I was sent their SXSW sampler, which showcase some of their artists at SXSW. Not on the list is Norah Jones, who is actually not performing – but will be previewing new music from her forthcoming album, Little Broken Hearts, a collaboration with Danger Mouse (to be released May 1st, 2012). The two previously worked on his album, Rome, which Dave reviewed.

The playlist, which is not commercially available, includes hot Australian band, Gold Fields, in an upcoming Going for Gold.
