We attended a live taping of The Jason Show, starring Jason Matheson, with Kendall Mark. The show is now five years running on KMSP Fox 9 from 10-11am. Although the show is slated as an hour-long programming, being in the audience section and watching it filmed live - well it actually didn’t feel that long. Before we knew it, the show was over.

As for the show we attended, they were back in the Fox studio in Eden Prairie from the Minnesota Zoo. Unfortunately, co-hosts Kendall had a little chest cold and was conserving her voice. Jason would later mentioned that his regular producer and his regular cameraman, were all sick and pretty soon the rest of the staff will likely get what is going around.

Like Twin Cities Live, the Jason Show does offer free tickets to live taping, although seats are very limited. TCL will only allow guest audience to come in on Friday, while the Jason Show offers seats for any live shows. Since the TCL don’t normally allow public guests, they do offer donuts, bottle water, and prizes (promotional items)… but since the Jason show does not.

The nice thing about the Jason Show is that they make all their shows available on YouTube … however, possibly due to copyright strikes, they won’t put up the celebrity news/gossips or music portion of their show.

The musical guests (Lori Dokken with Patty Peterson, Joyann Parker, Katie Gearty and Anna Christy) played a cover of Jefferson Airplane “Somebody To Love” to promote their upcoming Ordway show, Lori Dokken Presents “Women On The Moon” (on October 6th).

We also got to hear a snippet of Anna Christy and Dokken covering Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong’s “Dream A Little Dream Of Me” as the show was running the closing credits.

If you were looking for free activities in the Minneapolis area, check out Friday’s free live taping of Twin Cities Live at local ABC-affiliate station KSTP-TV. The show airs from 3-5pm weekdays, but only allow an audience on Friday.

The variety show/news program will sometime have musical guests (the recent being Phil Thompson talking about his upcoming album and a live performance), however our show did not feature any music guests.

Like any live broadcast, if you intend to attend, you are required to show up at least 30 minutes before the taping - so allow a few extra minutes for travel time (especially if you’re unfamiliar with the location of the station).

They do ask that you dress “business casual”, that no logos/branding should be shown, and no absolute white clothing (something about the lights and filming). They do have the right to disallow you from attending, so make sure you follow the dress code.

Arriving before the recording doesn’t guarantee into the show, unfortunately the station sometime over-book audience guests knowing that some will not show up. So, to be sure you get a spot, you really should arrive earlier, rather than later.

Once you arrive, you’re kept in a sitting/holding area (with free refreshments and snacks) until a wrangler comes to direct you where to go. It’s last call for bathroom, as you’ll be not allowed to leave during taping.

The wrangler, also doubles as your director… meaning he will teach you how to clap, how excited you should be, and what you should do. It was as if we were actually actors rather than just watching a live broadcast.

While the show is scripted (writers: Mandy Tadych, Christian Unser, Emily Engberg, Kelli Hanson, Brittany Larson, Andrew Schingen, Seth Holst, Mike Marcotte, Tracy Robb), it’s clear that anchors Elizabeth Ries and Steve Patterson will sometime do impromptu jokes.

The 90-minute taping went incredibly fast, partly due to the fact that during commercial breaks we were allowed to ask any questions about the show or they’ll raffle off prizes - ranging from “free junk” to Bluray to expensive Broadway/music concert tickets.

On top of that, we’re also given a free gift bag of swags, which is dependent on donated gifts. It’s typical branded pens, phone accessories, or cups… but we found a Holiday $10 gas card in random bags.

The whole thing was completely free and surprisingly entertaining. If you are available on Fridays from 2pm-5pm, it’s worth trying to get tickets.
