Passenger (aka Michael Rosenberg) is back in Minneapolis this Saturday, March 18th, at First Avenue’s mainroom. Passenger’s new album Young as the Morning Old as the Sea is out now.

The Paper Kites will be opening! We caught the Melbourne band last year and wrote, “Their fanbase here is incredible, and they just love the audience (which were mostly young college-bound or college students). There is something hopelessly romantic about the Paper Kites’ songs that speaks to their fans.”

Instrumental band This Will Destroy You is on a small five-date Midwest tour in support of their latest Another Language (Suicide Squeeze Records). The Texas group stopped in at the Varsity Theater in Minneapolis last night.

I had no clue there were stairs at the back of the stage at the venue. I have been there multiple times but the back of the stage was always covered with a giant banner of the band that was playing. There were no banners last night. There wasn't even a small logo strung up with duct tape like at many of the house shows I go to. There was nothing on the drum kits that hinted towards what band was playing. Hell, the bands barely addressed the crowd. But that was okay for last night. If you were at the show last night, you knew who you were seeing. It was not one of those shows that you just walk up to and decide, "Hey, this show sounds cool, let's go!", unless you're like me and go to anything and everything.

The Velvet Teen

The Velvet Teen (not to be confused with Minneapolis' The Velveteens, who just played last month) opened the show. They had me hooked from the first song. The singer had some effect on his microphone for majority of the show that I just couldn't get over. It was like auto-tune, but in a good way. They had two keyboards going which automatically gets me interested. Usually with more than one keyboard, the sound starts to get muddled but not The Velvet Teens. Their set was upbeat and had the crowd nodding their heads up and down and tapping their toes. Each song had a different feeling to it. The crowd never really got super into it, but you could tell that they were enjoying themselves.

This Will Destroy You was the headliner. They are an instrumental band from Texas that completely caught me off guard. I had checked them out a couple days ago just because a friend of mine was super excited that they were coming to town and I had a feeling he'd be dragging me to this show. I have to be honest, I fell asleep while listening to the first song. I hate instrumental music. I don't relate to notes, I relate to words. I like concerts because I can sing along to songs and feel connected. I didn't feel connected last night. I felt grounded. I felt like they were laying out the notes for me to sing my own song to. It was a soundtrack to my life and I was the singer and lyricist.

Their music can be extremely atmospheric and spacey at times but just when you get okay with that feeling, they hit you with an almost metal sounding section of the song. The crowd mirrored the sounds. One minute they would be swaying back and forth cradling their loved ones, or in my case, cradling my beer. The next minute, devil horns up with a little headbanging session in there. I loved these guys because they would keep you on your toes. You could seriously tell your life story through their music with the ups and downs, the slow and fast... the realness.

Apparently, it's been awhile since these guys have played in the Twin Cities (their last local appearance was at 7th Street Entry on 27 May 2011). They seemed genuinely surprised so many people showed up at the show. It was nowhere close to a sold out show, but there was a pretty good sized crowd. I hope that this means they will be back soon. Although this was a show where I felt a bit out of my element at, they were amazing and I would love to see them again and feel grounded yet again.

Lazyeyes and fellow Brooklynites The Teen Age (yes, another 'teen band') are heading out on tour tomorrow.

Flood Magazine recently shared Lazyeyes' "Fractals" (taken from their New Year EP) via Soundcloud.



As for The Teen Age, Justina saw them at Northside Festival 2014 in New York and wrote, "Seriously locally based (the lead singer lives down the street), The Teen Age plays fast-paced, punk rock music with a wave of surf rock mixed in. Their catchy hooks remind me of The Hives, but are combined with fairly low-key singing. Even in the small space, the band moved around and gave off a lot of contagious energy."

Texas' This Will Destroy You (often abbreviated to TWDY) will be doing a small Midwest tour next week, starting in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in support of their latest album Another Language (Suicide Squeeze Records), which reached #7 on Billboard Heatseekers Album Chart when it was released last September. The Boston Globe described the latest release as, "Blending the intensity of doom metal with the fragility of shoegaze, the music burns slowly, shifting from ambient to turbulent and back."

We previously saw TWDY at 7th Street Entry in 2011, and was surprised to learned that they were an all-instrumental band: "I didn't know This Will Destroy You was an all-instrumental band. I should have seen it coming when the stage was cleared and there were no microphones."

Supporting TWDY will be The Velvet Teen (yes! another 'teen' band), who I actually though broke up when drummer Logan Whitehurst died from cancer and bassist Josh Staples left the band in 2007. Glad to see that the trio is back now. The Velvet Teen's latest All Is Illusory came out on June 30, 2015.

Tour de Fat festival is coming back to Minneapolis next Saturday, July 25th!

Last year, the festival brought us Black Joe Lewis and the year before that, Those Darlins (which you can read all about it here).

This year, the big musical act is Americana/Folk band Blind Pilot from Portland, Oregon. The last time I heard from the band, members of the band (Kati Claborn, Luke Ydstie, and Ryan Dobrowski) formed a new band called Hook & Anchor.

I am mistaken about the broken lights at 7^th Street Entry, the soundman just do not turn on the main lights. So, it was fitting for this dark and stormy night as a trio of Texan bands arrived in Minneapolis last night on May 27^th.

I didn't know what to expect of this mostly-lumberjacky audience, you know the type: button plaid shirts (preferably red-colored), beards, possibly carrying tools. I asked around, it seems like some of the audience's hometown are from Texas, some are were massive doom/drone fans. There seemed to be a lot of fans out last night.

Nowlikephotographs.com provided the music between sets, the DJ seems to really like his 80s remixes of Prince and MJ.

PURE X

SLEEP∞OVER

Starting it all off was Austin's Pure X, formerly known as Pure Ecstasy (although this must've been a fairly recent change because the poster and listing still bill them under their former name), they are a shoegazy with mostly Nate Grace singing over a melodic wave of sound.

Sleep∞Over was supposed to have three women (Stefanie Franciotti, Christa Palazzolo and Sarah Brown), but I thought there were just two last night. The two did a lot of harmonizing and there were a lot of fans in the front who were eager to see them play. They cursed themselves as amateurish when the soundguy didn't start on time and then the drum machine didn't work until the third song kicked in.

I didn't know This Will Destroy You was an all-instrumental band. I should have seen it coming when the stage was cleared and there were no microphones. Since there were no lyrics involved, I'll admit, it was pretty hard for me to figure out what songs were played. Let's just agree that they played stuff from their recently released album, Tunnel Blanket.

A lot of their song seems to be spacey, moody, with lots of room to breath, and then, surprisingly the occasional loud guitars are kicked in. Their songs are longer than the average pop songs, most of them over eight minutes, but to be honest, you could not tell when a song ends or begins. The audience tried and guessed when a song end, and you do hear clapping and whistling, as the band continued to play on.

While this sort of ambient drone is not the sort of the music I listen to, I was glad to have seen them. They will be continuing their tour through June with The Nighty Night, so check them out if you can.
