Mark Sultan (the drummer of The King Khan & BBQ Show) stopped by the 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis last night, Friday, August 5th.

Bug Fix

Opening up the show were two local bands Real Numbers, followed by Bug Fix. The latter is actually somewhat of a local supergroup, consisting of Birthday Suits’ Hideo Takahashi, Red Pens’ Howard Hamilton, and Selby Tigers’ Dave Gatchell. The way the trio played rough / garagey / punk music with effortless ease, they were really bringing all their years of experience to this band.

The BBQ, otherwise known as Mark Sultan, is a one-man band. How Sultan achieved this is by positioning his drum kit with the snare vertical and tambourine attached to the bass drum. His feet would serve as percussion to let his hands free to play the guitar.

Sultan, dressed in a L.A.M.F. shirt (the only studio album by The Heartbreakers) and eyeball headdress, he started his 50-min set with ‘I'll Be Lovin’ You’, followed by ‘I Wanna Be The Only One’... as the night continues the music stopped suddenly: “Is everyone alright? I’m not a good musician, but I love playing music,” Sultan said, interrupting right in the middle of ‘Beautiful Girl’ (which sounded like it was inspired by The Beach Boys). Then minutes later, after fixing some hitch, he continued with an extended version of that song.

Realizing that he probably didn’t have enough material to play a full headlining gig (and the fact that he honestly admitted he had diarrhea from some spicy food) he would just jabber, telling (bad) jokes, and vamping for time. None of it really mattered, at the end of it, Sultan confessed that who cares, as long as you love what you’re doing. Clearly, even with the bad food, Sultan was enjoying his time back in the USA from his current Germany residency.

Sultan ended his set with a cover of The Rolling Stones’ ‘Out of Time’ (although done more in the Ramones style), asking his fans to dance. No encores were given, but none were expected. And with that, ‘baby, baby, you're out of time.’

Rock Icons vs. 21st Century Technology

With the music business changing rather drastically over the last decade or so, in terms of delivering music to the masses, it’s interesting to see how some of the longstanding rock icons are adapting (or not) to the new technology and methods to deliver their product to wanting ears.

Some, expectedly, have proven more successful than others.

The Boss has tread lightly in terms of the digital age as he and manager Jon Landau, have always kept a tight rein on Springsteen’s music catalog.  Impressed by the Pearl Jam model of offering up soundboard recordings of live concerts both digitally and on traditional CD, Springsteen dove into that pool with 30 different shows from 2014’s High Hopes tour, making them available in HD 24 bit, lossless FLAC, and MP3 versions.

Cleveland (1978)

More recently, the massive vault of vintage Springsteen recordings was opened, beginning with a 2012 performance at the Apollo in NYC, originally broadcast on Sirius XM, and now a radio simulcast show from Cleveland in 1978, taken from seven recently unearthed ¼” master reels.

While both shows have been available unofficially, it’s a promising sign to collectors and fans to see definitive versions of older shows become available and Springsteen’s catalog  should broaden further in 2015.

As the Stones’ 50^th Anniversary Tour continues into 2015, the band has entered the digital download era not with recent shows from their current tour, but a handful of more classic shows on both audio and video.

Beginning with a classic Los Angeles 1975 show and the Hampton Coliseum 1981 performance that was originally a pay-per-view broadcast, the Stones have expanded the catalog offerings to include other recordings from the 70s-90s, with the LA Forum and Hampton shows available at retail in both audio and video.

Like the older Springsteen releases, the vintage Stones offerings have been long available unofficially, but collectors and completists will no doubt snap up these definitive authorized versions and the catalog continues to grow.

Our favorite Material Girl has done things the old-fashioned way to get attention, but is showing some movement in the digital direction.  First, she posed provocatively in the Art Issue of the Dec/Jan edition of Interview magazine, including an exposed bra top in corset and stockings.

Then, earlier this month, a handful of demos were released unofficially to the internet, purporting to be working versions of many of the upcoming tracks from her March 2015 album, Rebel Heart (then speculated to be called Iconic).  While her people were dismissing the credibility of the leaked tracks, she took to Instagram to decry it an “artistic rape” and “form of terrorism”, though the post was quickly deleted.

Madge and co. soon went into combative overdrive, offering up six official tracks for immediate download (including Diplo-produced first single “Living for Love” which wasn’t due until Feb 14), with pre-order of the full album.   The strategy worked, as iTunes pre-orders for the album topped the charts in 40+ countries.

Don’t expect any vault releases digitally anytime soon, though it would be great to hear unreleased remixes, unused collaborations, and early session works with Stephen Bray and Nile Rodgers from her early albums.

After the 2014 release of not one, but two studio albums and a long-awaited deal with Warner Brothers to return his master recordings, anticipation was high in the Purple zone for a benchmark year.  Though he and band 3^rd Eye Girl managed some hit-and-run random concert dates, mostly in Europe and there were sporadic gigs back home at Paisley Park, a major tour never did materialize in 2014, as was fully expected.

Prince was an early pioneer as a major music artist to utilize the internet in then-unseen ways to connect and also created innovative marketing like giving away copies of his Musicology album in 2004 with every concert ticket bought (which at that time, counted as sales on SoundScan charts) and the looming 30^th anniversary of Purple Rain, had expectations high.

Prince, in his inimitable and unpredictable way, instead pulled the plug on all social media just before Thanksgiving; silencing the 3^rd Eye Twitter account, his barely used Facebook page, and lauded Prince-stagram account as well.

Still remaining mostly silent, third party sites and the Purple Essence and Baron 3121 accounts, are the closest link to finding out what The Purple Yoda may or may not do next, though an authorized lyric video for song “Anotherlove” did appear recently, via WB.

Known for a tight control of his artistic output as well as a massive vault of unreleased sessions and recordings, fans know better than to hold their breath for any series of vintage tracks or more current concerts to be released, though it would be most welcome and be direct income for him.

THE REPLACEMENTS

In typical and seemingly unplanned fashion, after spending the last year and a half doing reunion shows at indie festivals, The Replacements recently released a 24 min. jazz jam via Soundcloud, called “Poke Me in My Cage”, recorded in October in Waltham, MA.

The Paul and Tommy reunion was initially spurred by ex-bandmate Slim Dunlap’s need for financial support following a debilitating stroke, which resulted in a series of singles and resulting benefit album, and after the tour announcement, plans for new Replacements music were floated about.

While the extended instrumental probably has little bearing on what any new ‘Mats songs will actually sound like, the unexpected release did get fans excited for the prospect of new songs to come.  Westerberg himself previously released digital tracks timed and named 49:00 and 5:05, so fans can likely expect more of the unexpected.

I feel after reading the Brian Jones: The Making of the Rolling Stones book by Paula Trynka, that I'm a thousand percent more knowledgeable about who Brian Jones was.

The book does a great job covering Jones' life, particularly during the early days and development of The Rolling Stones. We're given a chapter on his childhood, including some rare facts like how he got a girl pregnant when he was 16. All that childhood information was quickly covered, as the real story in the book is about the creation of the Rolling Stones, which started on chapter two.

Trynka painstakingly detail Jones' involvement in creating the Rolling Stone, from coming up with the band's name to placing the original ad on Jazz News to drafting all the band members... Brian Jones was The Rolling Stones. Unfortunately, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards started to overshadowed Jones as the songwriting team, and by 1969, Brian Jones seemingly pressured into leaving the group.

To be fair, Trynka does document all of Jones' problems, leading up to his removal from the group. It started with health issues (rashes, epilepsy, asthmatic) causing Jones to miss shows to substance abuse in the later years (Trynka actually doesn't know what Jones was using, but suggested it was Mandrax prescription, combined with regular alcohol abuse). Instead of seeking help for Jones, the book tells us that everyone seemed to have just ignored Jones ... as if he was not there.

The vast majority of the book is focused on Brian Jones and the early days of the Rolling Stones, like the book title suggest, but like many of you, I was more interested in his death - which happened less than a month after he was walked away from the band. When I first got the book, I did skip to the final chapters to get Trynka's summarization of his death. What we're given here are facts, and Trynka let us make up our own conspiracies (if any) on Jones' "Death by Misadventure".

Some people suggests that it was suicide, especially before the Rolling Stones were about to play Hyde Park with their new guitarist Mick Taylor. Others think it was murder conspiracy by Jagger and Richards to seize control of the band.

Some interesting items in the Brian Jones' death:

Police version: accidental drowning due to drinking/blackout

Nicholas Fitzgerald: Fitzgerald and friend Richard Cadbury witnessed three men pushing someone under water.

A.E. Hotchner: According to his 1990 book Blown Away: The Rolling Stones and the Death of the Sixties, there were two witnesses, Dick Hattrell and 'Marty' saw Jones being murdered.

Tom Keylock: Brian's driver and minder, admitted that Frank Thorogood (the last person to see Jones alive) confessed on his deathbed that he killed Brian Jones (this was disputed by Jan Bell, daughter of Thorogood, who said no one came to visit her father before he died).

Jan Bell: Her father shared a story about how Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Brian Jones were arguing over ownership of the name Rolling Stones - which Keith pulled a knife on Jones. This story is in question because the Stones were at Olympic on that date.

Geoffrey Giuliano: In Giuliano's 1994 book Paint It Black, 'Joe' and 'Sean' held Brian Jones underwater.

You wonder sometime, if Jones were to die today, with the internet/cell phone tracking/digital fingerprints/news coverage, that it would be a different story?

On defending Brian Jones, I did get a sense that for the man who created the Rolling Stones, I felt like he was taken advantage of and regularly mistreated. The book paints a picture that Jones slowly lost all support and friendship from the other band members. Furthermore, there were no support from Jagger/Richards, whether financially or donations to Jones' family and estate after his death.

Although most people associate The Rolling Stones as mainly Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, in the early days, it was really Brian Jones who was the band leader. A little trivia, but Jones was the person who came up with the band name, The Rolling Stones, on the fly via a phone call to Jazz News, based on Muddy Waters (on a track called "Rollin' Stone").

There is a new book by Paul Trynka called Brian Jones: The Making of the Rolling Stones, and that trivia, as well as other secrets are unveiled in this forthcoming biography. The book goes on sale October 13, 2014, on Viking Press.

Here are just some of the juicy new revelations in Brian Jones: The Making of the Rolling Stones:

• For the first time, Trynka reveals Jones’s troubled early life, including the cover-up of his sister’s death. He also reveals the existence of a previously unknown child, given up for adoption while Jones was still in his teens.
• Today, Keith Richards explains his entire guitar style is based on the distinctive Open G tuning, which he claims he learned in 1968. Trynka reveals how Keith actually learned the tuning from Brian Jones—who then used it on early Stones records!
• Brian Jones rewrites the musician’s early life, and details how he’d racked up over 100 gigs, at a time when his fellow Stones were still playing in their front rooms.
• “Brian was killed by the establishment.” Trynka reveals how the British police were determined to break the most controversial Stone, and attempted to bust him on at least seven occasions.
• The doomed love affair of Jones and Anita Pallenberg has been much discussed. Trynka reveals how the accepted version of how they met is completely wrong, and that Anita had been pursuing Brian for months, before finally catching her quarry.

Perhaps falling under the affectionately (maybe?), silly (definitely) sub-genre known as PBR&B, Seattle-based musician Allen Stone has the soulful voice with a hippie touch.

Written on the homepage of Stone’s website, he says, “Basically my job is to throw a party for people every night when we’re on tour.” Even without seeing him live, listeners can easily agree just by listening to Stone’s music. Songs like “Sleep,” “Celebrate Tonight,” and “Say So,” from 2011 his self-released, self-titled album are soulful not just in the sense of musical genre, but truly full of spirit and energy that is tangible. That being said, Allen Stone should still be experienced live to be fully appreciated.

Susstones Records recently announced that they've added Minneapolis' Stereo Confession to their roster.

The high school garage-punk band is described as:

Stereo Confession have been rapidly rising through the local indie rock ranks over the last months, scoring a series of high-profile support slots at local venues and securing crucial 89.3 and Radio K support for their recent self-released singles “Video Games” and “Hang Ten.” Their debut album No Coast, produced by Ed Ackerson at Flowers Studio in Minneapolis, contains both these tracks plus 8 more awesome surf/shred/doom/skree/garage/punk tracks in the band’s inimitable style. Although 4/5 of the band isn’t even 18 yet, they’re already writing tunes and rocking at a level far beyond what most bands ever dream of.

Varèse Sarabande Records will release A Walk Among the Tombstones - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack digitally on September 16th and on CD September 23, 2014. The soundtrack features an original score composed by Carlos Rafael Rivera. The movie, directed by Scott Frank (The Lookout) will open in theaters on September 19th.

Do you live in the States and too embarrassed to admit not knowing who the Coachella headliners are? I've got great news for you, a new music biography book: STONE ROSES: WAR AND PEACE by Simon Spence was just released this week, April 2nd, on St Martin's Press.

The book will likely cover the overnight success of the Stone Roses from their debut 1989 album to their current "cult-like" status. It would seem that at the moment, the Stone Roses are only entertaining doing large music festivals and nothing less. Side shows (if any, like in Australia) were sold out minutes when they were announced - even at a higher prices than a typical show. … This just means it would be unlikely that I will see the band live in my lifetime. If you lucky enough to see them then below is their tour dates. Note that Johnny Marr confirmed that he will be opening up for the Stone Roses on their London dates.

In other Stone Roses news, a new documentary by Shane Meadows called The Stone Roses: Made of Stone will be in theaters June 5th across the UK and Ireland via Picturehouse Entertainment. The film will premiere in their hometown in Manchester on May 30th with a very rare public appearance from the band and the director and producer (Mark Herbert).

As previously mentioned last year, the Rolling Stones are back at 50 with their GRRR! greatest hits compilation and some very selective shows.

The band are 'rolling' out more tour dates in 2013, announcing this will be part of their "50 and Counting" tour. Ticket sales will be available April 8th with some other dates pending due to NBA/NHL playoff schedules.

Singer Mick Jagger had this to say about the tour, "'50 AND COUNTING' has been pretty amazing so far. We did a few shows in London and New York last year...and had such a good time that we thought...let's do some more. It's a good show. Lots of the classic stuff everyone wants to hear...with a few little gems tucked in here and there. The stage is shaped like lips and goes off into the venue so I get to run around in the crowd. It's great fun to be able to get that close to the audience."

NME recently crowned The Rolling Stones as "Best Live Band", so expect an amazing show if you're wealthy enough to see them live. Also, stage is shaped like a giant lips???? Dates listed below.

BEATLES AND R.E.M.
Jess fell in love with these bands at a young age and not at all embarrassed about it. Better tastes than me: who fell in love with Information Society, Phil Collins, and Wilson Phillips (this was not discussed).

Personally I love that R.E.M.'s Out of Time-era. I do really love Eponymous and Murmur (which I reviewed the Deluxe Edition).

THE ROLLING STONES
The legendary Rolling Stones formed in 1962, and fifty years later, they are still together. Last month (October), the band played their first gig as a band in five years. And they're just "starting up", with a few other live dates announced this year:

In addition to the live dates, their record label ABKCO and Universal Music Group released a three-disc "Greatest Hits" album called GRRR!. The regular edition compiles 50 hit tracks, while a four disc "Super-Deluxe" set will feature 80 tracks. The Super-Deluxe set will also feature Charlie is My Darling, a DVD/Blu-Ray hour-long Rolling Stones road trip documentary and costs $99.99. I believe you can also purchase the DVD/Blu-Ray by itself if the deluxe edition is too rich for your blood.

If you're a hardcore fan and already own all the selected singles, you'd be pleased to note that the new compilation also feature two brand new songs called "Doom and Gloom" and "One More Shot."

We've seen this before with other band reunion, notably The Beach Boys and The Stone Roses - where the band members all hate each other. Will it last long enough for them to enjoy the mad cash or "the music that matters"?

Vaccines: Come of Age

Jess was rather impressed by Miner, who played their very first show at the The Echo, Los Angeles (10/23/12). I was rather star struck when I saw that Daisy Betts, actress tweeted the link (she's one of the few women on the submarine.)

It also looks like San Cisco will be opening up for Vaccines! I really love the Vaccines, so this is a match made in heaven.

Tame Impala: Lonerism

TAME IMPALA
Tame Impala just played a bunch of sold out shows in America. Jess loves these guys and had the opportunity to see them at The Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles on November 17th. Expect to read all about it soon.

Here's an odd album: 1972's Necrophilia by The Rolling Stones. This album was never officially released, but the original proof cover art and very rare acetate were produced.

Originally intended as a follow-up release after the very successful Hot Rocks 1964-1971 compilation (it was the Stones' best-selling record at the time). Necrophilia was compiled by bassist Bill Wyman who picked out some very rare Stones song. Since most of the songs were not written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, Allen Klein (the Stones' ex-manager) stepped in and demanded more Jagger/Richards song, purely for monetary reasons.

So Necrophilia was scrapped and what emerged was More Hot Rocks (Big Hits & Fazed Cookies).

Obviously when bootlegs discovered the acetate and they started making and selling the vinyl, eventually releasing it on compact disc in 2002. One of the companies that released Necrophilia is called A Vinyl Gang Products. They mostly delt with live recordings, you can find out more about AVGP on rollingstonesnet.

The rare song that I'm going to use is "Andrew's Blues".

Here's some information about the song: it was written around February 1964 and credited to "Nanker Phelge" (a fictional name).

The name would guarantee the entire band to share the writing royalties. It came from a suggestion from guitarist, Brian Jones, who named it after a revolting face "nanker" and Jimmy Phelge's surname.

I believe the song is about Andrew Loog Oldham, who was the Stones' publicist at the time.  If you listen to the song, they even make reference to themselves from Andrew's point of view:
