"I wore my space frames for you all," stated Tori Amos at the O'Shaughnessy in St Paul, August 3rd, during her brief, but scheduled, Tori Says Hello segment. It's understandable that she's trying to limit the talk time, so she can fit in more songs, because she's got so many song requests that it's hard to play everything, otherwise "we'll be here all night."

Opening up for Tori was Trevor Moss and Hannah Lou, a married couple, who previously played under the name Indigo Moss. When they lost their bassist and drummer, the two decided to play under their own names.

The 'hightlight' of their brief 30 minute set was when the spotlight went out and they kept playing in complete darkness without any breaks! Real pros, and the audience kept handclapping to help cheer them on.

They ended their set with a cover of Charlie Parr's "Cheap Wine", a nice tribute to the Minnesota bluesman.

Setlist

Although the tour was for Tori Amos' latest release Unrepentant Geraldines, as evident by the setlist, she is only playing fan requests. The setlist is dictated by the fans, so every show is unique, in terms of live songs. She got so many requests that some of the songs on last night's set were from previous cities... and anything not played last night will be carried over to Chicago's show, etc.

While this is amazing for fans who wants to hear the rare, obscure songs, it's bad for casual fans who wants to hear the greatest 'hits' tour. Still, I was very satisfy with the Saint Paul setlist, which included "Crucify" (from her debut solo Little Earthquakes album) and two Prince nods, "Little Red Corvette" and "Raspberry Swirl" with an outro of "Raspberry Beret" and, of course, the set finale "Cornflake Girl."

I spoke to some Tori fans who is travelling the country, seeing most, if not every, show on this stop and they've all agreed that this Unrepentant Geraldines tour was by far the best tour yet. Like other dedicated fan groups, like Morrissey or Insane Clown Posse or Phish, going to a Tori Amos show isn't just about Tori Amos... it's also experiencing the fan community.

As for the concert, Tori's Unrepentant Geraldines set are broken into three parts, with the middle section called Lizard Lounge, which includes nothing but cover songs. If you've ever heard Tori's covers, they are so different than the original that they really deserve to be their own songs. I've said it time and time again, but she definitely performs the best cover songs. Her original live songs are treated the same way, it's like Tori is covering herself, because often her well known songs starts off like something completely different.

The third portion of the set had a switch in equipment, which had an organ sound, which you can clearly hear during "The Beekeeper". Tori is often switch back and forth between her two instruments, sometime quite quickly, and often accompanied by loud cheers.

Her four-song encore started with "Winter" (from my favorite Little Earthquakes album), followed by "Bliss" (from her fifth album To Venus and Back) "Raspberry Swirl" (from the third From the Choirgirl Hotel album, but 'swirling' in a little Prince's "Raspberry Beret" mix) and ending with "Pretty Good Year" (from the second Under the Pink album). As you can see from just that small sampling, Tori Amos has a large body of work to draw from.

In a few years, when Tori goes back on tour, you can sure bet fans will be asking for some Unrepentant Geraldines tracks. Unrepentant Geraldines, the fourteenth album by Tori Amos, is out now on Mercury Classic/Universal Mercury Classic, and is available in the standard CD, a limited CD+DVD, and two disc vinyl LP set.

Idan Raichel was in an incredibly good mood at the O'Shaugnessy Auditorium in St. Catherine University on May 14th. This translate to Raichel talking more than usual, rambling on about his parents knowing each other since they were three years old and how he saw an old lady being sold an investment money policy at a bank. As Raichel talked, his flutist jokingly pretends to leave the stage.

Raichel, who normally sport an incredible massive dreadlock, appeared on stage with a shaven head. He tried to explain the top three reasons for cutting his hair, but ultimately it came down to, "because my lady told me to do it."

He continues on about how it's a small miracle that people from all over the world comes out to see them play live. "When we play in Israel, it's considered pop music, but when we play outside of the country, it's considered 'World Music'. Well I hope when you leave here tonight, that you think this is Israeli music."

Raichel may be underselling his music simply as Israeli music because, the truth is, his music spans over many countries: dabbing in Hebrew/Jewish, Arabic, Spanish, and Ethiopian music... plus on top of that world fusion music, there are elements of electronica and dance beats, making for a unique musical blend. His audience, which are mostly Jewish, showed up in strong numbers in support of Idan Raichel's latest work.

Maya Avraham, Cabra Casay, and Avi Wassa

The thing about Idan Raichel is that it almost seems to me that he'd much prefer to be the guy behind the scene (even though some songs requires him to sing as he play keys stage right). Instead, he let the spotlight shine on his three barefooted singers: Maya Avraham, Cabra Casay (alternate spelling Kabra Kasai), and Avi Wassa.

The songs (please refer to the setlist), were mostly from their latest album Quarter to Six (Cumbancha), but mixing in some old fan favorites like "Brong Faya" (which translates to "Burn Fire").

It wasn't until near the end of the set that Avi Wassa encouraged fans in the seated O'Shaughnessy to stand up and dance with them. At one point, even inviting a fan in the audience to come on stage and danced with them. The O'Shaugh floor wasn't designed for stomping and jumping up and down, at least in the front orchestra section of the stage, and I felt a real fear that we would collapse on the rowdy dancing. Thankfully, during the quieter song, the audience sat down... but then quickly stood up again once the songs on the set started to pick up again.

The Idan Raichel Project is currently on tour in support of Quarter to Six, be sure to catch this band for a truly world-fusion experience.

"TEACH ME HOW" was scrawled on the chalkboard at the start of Fiona Apple and Blake Mills' "Anything We Want" show at last night's O'Shaughnessy theater in Saint Paul. Just before they launched in to "Tipple", Apple quickly wrote "… to be free"!

As the tour title suggest, this was an "anything goes" type of show from Apple and Mills. Even as they took pride in suggesting that they have absolutely no idea what they were going to do on stage, they seem to be well-rehearsed (Mills had nine guitars at his feet, ready to go!) and have a solid direction of what songs they were going to play.

The set list had a good mix of Fiona Apple and Blake Mills songs, which sort of serve different views from a boy and girl. The counter-balance work best when the two are singing duets, in particular "Seven". That song actually was Mills' "favorite Fiona song", despite the fact that he would later confessed it was also "Left Alone".

Understandably, most songs were written by Apple and Mills, but you know both of them love other songs. Their choice of cover was "It's Only Make Believe" by Conway Twitty, a country singer who died in the early 90s.

There was a moment when Apple drew attention to the name "Trevor" written on her shoe on paper tape. She said that it was a reminder for her to let us (Trevor from Berkeley) know that she will be sending him a letter in the mail because she doesn't have his email address, "So, you know it's going to take a few days." To be honest, I didn't think Apple was a digital sort of girl. She seems to me like a girl who paints and writes pen pal letters.

Highlight of the show was a riveting performance of "Anything We Want". Apple's emotional hand-clawing on her own skin suggests there's something much deeper going on in this song.

They ended their set with an orchestra-inspired version of "Waltz (Better Than Fine)" then quickly followed by "Regret". No encores, but hey, it's Apple and Mills' 'anything they want' show so they can do whatever they want.

Fiona Apple and Blake Mills will be heading out on tour on a special 12 date, North American tour called "Anything We Want: An Evening With Fiona Apple & Blake Mills".

As indicated by the title, anything goes with this tour, as they only have "13% of an idea of what the f***k we will be playing for you." Whatever they decide to play, I'm certain the night you are seeing them, it will be forever a very unique and unrepeatable experience with Apple & Mills.

Please note, since I live near Minneapolis, that the O'Shaughnessy is actually located in St Paul at St Catherine University. I've never attended a show there before, but looking over their event listings, this seem to be catered to the more "fine art" shows - although I did noticed a few pop/rock acts like Celtic Thunder (10/19) and Chris Cornell (10/30).
