Next up were The Mowgli's, an indie rock/folk band from southern California. Going into the show, I had no idea what to expect. Simply put, I was blown away. From their first song, Waiting For The Dawn

|
The headliner almost didn’t play at all—Canadian electro-pop singer-songwriter Lights had lost all of her lights.
Thankfully, after some quick-thinking scrambling by her lighting director and after an only slightly longer break between sets, the show carried on.
After a short set by hip-hop songstress K. Flay (who we previously saw at a Go 96.3 show and was still promoting last year’s Life as a Dog (Bummer Picnic Records), this co-headlining bill at the Varsity Theater in Minneapolis, had southern California neo-hippie band, the Mowgli’s , on next.
A spirited feel-good 65min. of hummable tunes followed, many culled from their latest, Kids in Love (Photo Finish/Island Records) which was released earlier this spring. ‘Love is Easy’ was dedicated to anyone “who’s had their heart smashed into a bazillion pieces” and co-vocalist Katie Jayne Earl took time out in the set to re-inforce the band’s mission of spreading love and kindness, and mentioned that all the band’s proceeds from ‘Room for All of Us’ were going to charity.
Mowgli's |
The seven-piece collective found their groove halfway through with ‘What’s Going On’ (not the Marvin Gaye number, but one that encouraged action as well) while ‘Love Me Anyway’ had the crowd singing along with the band’s four primary vocalists.
Earl re-engaged the audience to explain their support of People Serving People, a local organization that serves the homeless as bassist Matthew Di Panni and band worked through a loose ‘Lean on Me’ cover before the band launched into the sunny, reggae-tinged ‘I’m Good’. Biggest radio hit to date ‘San Francisco’ was saved for last, with the inner hippie coming out for many grooving in place in the crowd.
Mowgli's |
As mentioned, the break between sets was longer than usual, no thanks to an oddly boisterous audience and a minor drunken scuffle in the balcony that resulted in a full beverage glass landing straight below, directly onto the lighting board, making it inoperable. Springing into action, a backup board was found and all was working again soon after.
Valerie Poxleitner |
We’ve seen the diminutive singer Lights previously, including an impressive Valentine’s night show at Mill City Nights, and even without any new material, she and her band still found a way to make her 65 minutes seem fresh and new. The stage remained dark for much of the set, with a series of two rows of large lighted boxes framing many of the band members, most of whom were situated behind those outlined cubes for an added 3D effect.
The singer (aka Valerie Poxleitner) seemed comfortable in black tank and overalls, dodging from side to side and reaching out to audience members’ extended hands. A bonus track, from last year’s Little Machines (Warner Bros Records), ‘From All Sides’ started her show, with ‘Toes’ and ‘Siberia’ from her previous 2011 album, following.
Setlist |
The bobbing crowd responded to ‘Muscle Memory’ from the newest album, with the singer not saying a lot between songs initially, perhaps due to the abbreviated set time. She did admit to being under the weather for the show, but also mentioned while smiling, “you guys are like magic, making me feel good”.
Prefacing a few mid-set acoustic numbers, she admitted to cheers, that plans were being made to release an all-acoustic version of the Little Machines album soon. Diving into deep cut ‘Meteorites’ gave us a taste of that acoustic/orchestral album, while earlier songs ‘Drive My Soul’ and Second Go’ wrapped up the stripped-down set.
Pulling moments from her past and looking back to childhood inspired ‘Running with the Boys’ and her request to “shake it and move everything” was heeded for the rhythm- inducing ‘Timing is Everything’. Electro keys sounded the beginning notes of ‘Up We Go’, the set closer, with the band not actually leaving the stage but remaining on to play a single-song encore of ‘Banner’.
Lights had indeed regained her lights, and despite that unfortunate incident and the singer feeling a little ill, still pulled off a show that pleased the faithful, and gained many new fans, in the process.

Savannah, GA's Kylesa will be stopping in at the Turf Club in St Paul on this Black Friday, in support of their latest Exhausting Fire.
In writing Exhausting Fire, the trio found themselves culling inspirations before getting together in various permutations at various times to wade through the amassed collections of riffs and ideas stockpiled before, during and after the punishing Ultraviolet tour schedule. Band member Phillip Cope described the record as, "an album we really put our hearts on our sleeves for. We previously caught local Hippo Campus at the Chipotle Cultivate Festival 2015 and noticed they have a lot of fans here. We weren't surprised that this upcoming all-ages show is sold out.
The show is their homecoming gig, having just wrapping up a national tour from Philadelphia to Omaha in support of their most recent EP South (Grand Jury Records). Since hitting #1 on the Alternative Specialty Chart and heavy rotation on Sirius' Alt-Nation, the band found themselves selling out populated cities, like Chicago, Philadelphia and Brooklyn.
Opening up for the First Avenue show will be Bad Bad Hats (who recently sold out the 7th Street Entry) and Danger Ron & The Spins.

SUNDAY, AUGUST 17 Target Center
Kiss / Def Leppard / The Dead Daisies
“You wanted the best, you got the best!”, so is the classic stage intro for Kiss, who come to town alongside fellow hard rock legends, Def Leppard. At least two of the best anyway, as Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons lead the now-Rock Hall inducted band in what will no doubt be a highly pyrotechnic and entertaining show.
Though Def Leppard’s guitarist Vivian Campbell continues to bravely battle Hodgkin's lymphoma, he refuses to let it sideline him and expect him and the band to play all the 80s/90s classics during their hour+ set.
Down Under-formed band The Dead Daisies begins the evening, featuring ex- INXS singer Jon Stevens and an A-list of supporting players.
Best of all, KISS and Def Leppard jointly are supporting members of the armed services by partnering with numerous military organizations for the tour.

Strand Of Oaks w/ Christopher Denny
Strand of Oaks can attest to the healing power of music.
The project is essentially singer-songwriter Tim Showalter who plays somewhat dark folk rock and was sidelined last Christmas as Showalter and his wife were involved in an icy car accident with two semis that left him concussed with all broken ribs on his right side. The resulting HEAL (Dead Oceans Records) is a revelatory insight into Showalter’s near-death trauma.

THE GARAGE
Kingmaker w/ Seeker,
Widow
When I saw that Kingmaker were playing at the Garage in Burnsville, Minnesota, I was really excited. After all, we haven't heard much from this British band since the 90s (they broke up in 1995 but reformed in 2010). But alas, this Kingmaker band is a hardcore band from Chicago.
With the recent Sleeper at Studio B at the Skyway Theatre because fans of Louise Wener may be disappointed to find out that, this Sleeper is actually a Minneapolis DJ.
I suppose there's only so many names to go around, but still...
Anyway, Kingmaker are touring with Seeker, a metal band from Dallas, and Widow, a metal band from Houston.

Although this will be Minneapolis' first Cultivate Festival, the festival started in 2011 in Chicago. 2014 is the first time the Denver-based burrito chain is expanding to Minneapolis.
Spokesman Chris Arnold said festivals in other cities have drawn between 25,000 and 40,000 people... but based on seeing the turnout for the Internet Cat Video at Walker Art Center last night, I would think higher!

Ohio band, Walk The Moon, is currently on tour promoting their latest album,
simply titled Walk The Moon.
Accompanying them onstage were bands Smallpools and The Mowgli's.
SMALLPOOLS
|
Indie pop band, Smallpools, hasn't been around very long, forming earlier this year, but they are already making big waves. The band opened with one of their singles, Mason Jar, before going on to play other songs off their latest EP such as Not Story Time and Over and Over.
Then, lead singer, Sean Scanlon announced that the band will be working on recording a new album after touring. They followed with two brand new songs, American Love and You've Got The Music In You. The band ended with their current hit, Dreaming, which was, without doubt, the highlight of the show. I have a feeling
we'll be seeing a lot more of Smallpools in the near future.
THE MOWGLI'S
|
Next up were The Mowgli's, an indie rock/folk band from southern California. Going into the show, I had no idea what to expect. Simply put, I was blown away. From their first song, Waiting For The Dawn, to Hi, Hey There, Hello the entire band brought unusual amount of positive energy, the kind of energy that would make someone like myself yearn to get on stage to dance beside them.

Dave Appelbaum, keyboardist and vocalist, was invited out of his corner of the stage to play guitar for the song Carry Your Will, which gave everyone just enough time to catch their breath. The atmosphere had changed, but not for long as the band finished the night off with songs The Great Divide followed by crowd-favorite San Francisco.
The Mowgli's are “the kind of band you see live and it makes you want to go and listen to all their music.” I will definitely be keeping an eye out for any nearby shows in the future.
Walk The Moon: “dance-rock” group from Ohio that most of the audience, sporting painted faces and official t-shirts, had been eagerly anticipating to take the stage. I had seen Walk The Moon earlier this year on my trip to Bonnaroo, and, although vastly different audience and venue sizes, I was not disappointed a second time around. The sounds of girls screaming quickly faded when the band began to play their first song of the night, Next In Line.
After playing a few more from their self-titled debut, Walk The Moon immediately followed with a first-time performance of the song Sidekick, and later introduced the audience to Boyfriend. For the song I Can Lift A Car, everyone in the crowd was asked to raise their arms and “push” into the sky, though instructions were likely unnecessary as so many already knew what to do. After exhausting much of their arsenal, the band went on to play their well-known single Anna Sun.
The vocals were drowned out during the chorus (“Oh Anna Sun!”) by the audience. For the encore, lead singer, Nicholas Petricca, busted out a keytar to play Jenny, another favorite amongst fans. A brand new album is set to begin recording upon completion of the tour, which is taking place today, October 31st at the Barrymore Theatre in Madison, Wisconsin.

Family of the Year opened their two month U.S. tour at the House of Blues in New Orleans Sunday March 17th before a small but enthusiastic crowd...…

80's band Frankie Goes to Hollywood once sang about 'Two Tribes' and when the SoCal-based Family of the Year/Mowgli's tour rolled into the packed Triple Rock Social Club Saturday night, two tribes grooving to SoCal harmonic rock, was what the evening was all about.
THE MOWGLI'S SETLIST
|
The evening began with relative newcomers, The Mowgli's, playing a solid set of rootsy West Cost folk/pop that more than a little suggested they were the next generation of Haight-Ashbury hippie musicians. The seven-piece band (Michael Vincze, Colin Louis Dieden, Katie Jayne Earl, Matthew Di Panni, Josh Hogan, Dave Appelbaum and Spencer Tren) crowded the small Triple Rock stage, but engaged the audience with songs from their recently released full-length, Sound The Drum (Island/Def Jam), including 'Carry Your Will', 'Time', and the current radio fave, 'San Francisco'. 4 to 5 of the members traded the lead vocal role in their brief set, complete with tambourines, a kazoo keyboard, and a distinct peace and love mood to all their songs.
The positive energy continued with fellow Los Angeles-based Family of the Year (brothers Joe and Sebastian Keefe, James Buckey, Christina Schroeter, Alex Walker) taking the stage next, for 50 more minutes of feel good vibes and melodies, promoting their recent full-length, 'Loma Vista' (Nettwerk). Beginning with 'Buried' with its ominous lyrics against lightened harmonies, then commenting how good the audience looked, the band next went into a buoyant 'Chugjug' from their first record, several crowd members scratching their head looking for recognition, likely not realizing it was also the soundtrack for an Advil commercial. Their alt-folk stylings with male/female vocals were an immediate hit with the crowd, the band commenting that Minneapolis was their first sellout ever (a late Jan. gig at 7th St Entry), making their Triple Rock sellout a bit of a victory lap.
The crowd sang along to 'Living on Love' and 'St Croix', the latter with its infectious chorus, "You bring the ocean, I'll bring the motion, Together we'll make a love potion". A raucous 'In the End' followed, then the crowd hushed for the radio single 'Hero', which had many whispering the lyrics back in unison. Momentum picked back up with 'Stupidland' before ending the set with an almost-disco / Scissor Sisters-like 'Psyche or Like Scope' (from their first ep), with the appropriate ending lyric, "oh yeah, we've got somewhere to go tonight". Both bands turned up the energy live, versus a more laid back feel of their recorded songs, and willingly attracted the Minnesota crowd into a taste of SoCal soulful harmonic folk/pop. Family of the Year even kept the West Coast good-feeling groove alive by offering their latest CD at the merch table at a price of "whatever you can pay". Peace and love indeed.
Family of the Year at Triple Rock Social Club, Minneapolis (04/13/13)
|
Los Angeles-based buzz band Family of The Year continues their trek across the country, with The Mowgli’s, bringing a taste of Southern California to the Triple Rock Social Club in Minneapolis, on Saturday April 13. This date closely follows a late January sold-out show from FOTY at the 7th St Entry, proving their popularity is growing exponentially.
Anchored by Welsh-born brothers Joe and Sebastian Keefe, the band’s melodic sound of male/female harmonies and alt-folk stylings have recently taken hold with the single “Hero”, which is currently in regular rotation on local public radio and Adult/Hot Alternative stations.
Touring in support of their latest release, ‘Loma Vista’, the band’s laid back and relaxed update of California Surf Rock has garnered recent positive support from reviews in Spin, NME, and on the BBC.
This time around, they bring fellow Californian band, The Mowgli’s in tow, who also bring the good time vibes and West Coast pop/folk harmonies and melodies.
Fans of Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, or an updated California sound that also harkens back to Fleetwood Mac and The Byrds, should take interest in this show, featuring two West Coast bands quickly gaining national attention.
