South by San Jose is a five day community event at the Hotel San Jose parking lot. Events are always free to attend.

Dan sent in these notes and live photos, leading up to the Magic Numbers. Dum Dum Girls and The Black Lips were headlining this event on "Pi-day", March 14.

Hurray For The Riff Raff Friday, March 14

Hurray For The Riff Raff just released their latest, Small Town Heroes, on ATO. Really good Cajun Sound. I saw them at the Mojo BBQ, two or three years ago and have always been impressed.

The New Orleans-based folk-blues and southern gothic Americana band is led by singer-songwriter and banjo player Alynda Lee Segarra. Small Town Heroes, this is their major label debut on ATO Records.

Robert Ellis Friday, March 14

Robert Ellis is a singer-songwriter and guitarist from Nashville, Tennessee. His third studio album, The Lights from the Chemical Plant, was released last February 2014 via New West Records.

Songs on his set included a covered Richard Thompson's "Teared Stained Letter".

The Magic Numbers are from West London, consists of two pairs of siblings (Angela & Sean Gannon and Michele & Romeo Stodart). The band have a fourth studio album coming out this year. Their last studio release was The Runaway in 2010, which W♥M brought you exclusive interview with Angela.

New highlight "Roy Orbison", "Forever Lost" was second, which was a smart play. They also covered Skeeter Davis' "The End Of The World". Amazing harmonies...

They have been gone from the US too long. Recognition is an issue.

Rhett Miller from the Old 97's. Judy and I both agreed we don't get him. He is smarmy and over-the-top for my tastes. He was plugging the new Old 97's CD coming on ATO.

One song was about being a motherf***** and he has no problems singing it in front of little kids.

Sorry that was a hour of my life I won't get back.

Emily saw the Old 97's last year in Minneapolis and said "Rhett Miller is a fantastic and passionate vocalist".

Jessica Lea Mayfield, singer-songwriter.

She is why we sat through Rhett Miller. I loved the last LP (Tell Me), but she has gone into a heavy metal phase. Lots of chorus and distortion on her guitar.

Not sure what she was trying for, but I still like her.

Let's hope the new LP (Make My Head Sing) isn't as loud...

The Strypes. They were interviewed in a bar we were walking by. 16 year olds from Ireland and on the list to hopefully see later.

The 4-piece rhythm & blues band from Cavan, Ireland, is currently signed to Virgin/EMI Records. They are stopping by Minneapolis' Triple Rock Social Club on March 25th, for Minnesotans interested in checking out the young band for yourself. Probably the only time you will get to see them at a smaller club venue.

UK pop-punks, Save Your Breath, recently released There Used To Be A Place For Us via Animal Style Records LP. The band recently wrapped up a tour in the UK with We Are The In Crowd.

Highlight of the day. The Magic Numbers, who I absolutely love, and thought their free showcase was tomorrow. Imagine my surprise when in search of BBQ, I stuck my head in the bar at the Hilton and knew right away it was the Magic Numbers.

Highlights beyond their harmonies were "Forever Lost" with audience participation and "Take A Chance" which turned into Fleetwood Mac's "Rihanna".

They are ready to try and make a go in the states, which is good news, and I put the plug in for 'come to Minneapolis'. They still remember the Minnesota State Fair gig with the Flaming Lips. Torrential rain kept them to just two songs.

Rams' Pocket Radio. Irish lead singer. Well-polished, and knows how to play for the crowd.

We are at the British Embassy showcase and I'm use to bands that are nervous and just starting out... but not the case here. Young, but very tight. The sound is something close to early Keane. Easy comparison with the piano player being front and center.

About to run out the door to hop on a tour bus, Angela from the english 4-piece,The Magic Numbers, squeezed in a very brief chat with Sally. Its been a few years since the release of their last album, Those the Brokes, in 2006 and quite a lot has happened in the meantime. Romeo, Michele and Angela each working on various other projects, including Romeo's work on Damon Albarn's Africa Express Project (including a song that is on the Twilight: New Moon soundtrack), Angela's work on The Boxer Rebellion's latest album and Michele's solo work. They also have their own studio now. ooh!

Containing arrangement from the late Robert Kirby (of Nick Drake's Five Leaves Left fame), the new album, The Runaway is set to be released in July. With the release of the album The Magic Numbers are about to kick off quite an extensive tour (including Australia; adding to the already brilliant line-up on the bill at the sold out Splendour in the Grass festival in Woodford, Queensland at the end of July).

The Magic Numbers

I first came across The Magic Numbers in an issue of either GQ or Esquire Magazine a couple of years ago. The article included a nice illustration of them by artist Zohar Lazar, which is what really drew me to the article. I wish I could find the article, but I can't find it; I may have thrown it out :(

 

Gone Are the Days

The Magic Numbers are comprised of two pairs of brother/sister siblings; Romeo and Michele Stodart & Sean and Angela Gannon. They released their self-titled debut album in 2005 that was critically acclaimed. That same year, they contributed "Gone Are the Days" to a compilation album to help War Child International called War Child: Help! A Day in the Life. For the project, War Child invited artists to contribute a brand new, unique track and the songs were all recorded in 24 hours. Other artists part of the project include Coldplay, Radiohead, Bloc Party, Gorillaz, etc. "Funds raised by the charity's deal with Independiente Records will immediately go to their projects in Iraq and DR Congo. Further funds, profile and membership raised will go to maintain these projects and others in countries such as Afghanistan and Bosnia".

 

The Beard (Live)

2006 brought their sophmore album Those the Brokes, but it didn't get released in the US until a year later. The album was well received though some reviews thought the songs were too long. In 2007, they released a limited edition 2-disc live album that was recorded by Concert Live at the Kentish Town Forum in London. I've only seen The Magic Numbers in concert once at Webster Hall (with The Elected opening) and they were absolutely outstanding live. I've posted "The Beard", a song they tend to close with during live shows and will probably remain a live-exclusive. According to Romeo when asked about it on their message board he said, "I don't think there'll ever be a studio version of 'The Beard' as it would seem strange without an audience". So enjoy a live recording or catch it at one of their live shows.

 

Sissy & The Silent Kid

Most recently, they released a six-track EP consisting of their single "Undecided", an alternate version of "Let Somebody In" and four unreleased recordings.

Their vocals have also been part of songs by The Concretes ("Your Call"), The Chemical Brothers ("Close Your Eyes"), Ed Hardcourt ("Revolution in the Heart"), and a couple of others (List on Wiki).
