Wowsville (vuart) art: vu

Stoner rocker Colleen Green just recently played the Turf Club in St Paul on Thursday night.

Opening up the show, slightly later than expected, was local band Wowsville. We've seen this band before with R. Ring (Kelley Deal), but in the span of about three months, they are no longer a trio... and had a new drummer: Tim from Heaven on Howitzers and Livid (his Wowsville live debut appearance at the Turf Club). I believe the duo team-up is only temporary.

I know their setlist shows 9 songs, but I think due to starting late and singer Dylan Ritchie had trouble with his guitar plug, they may have dropped off one or two songs.

Next up was The Lower 48, who was not working with a setlist, but instead "just winging it". Without a setlist, I really couldn't tell you what they played - however midway into their set, guitarist Ben Braden broke his guitar string, and singer/guitarist Sarah Parson sang "Hello Blue Bird" (acapella) to vamp some time while they fix the instrument.

I got the feeling that this band had family in Minneapolis, as there was a strong turnout for them (particularly after they asked the audience to come closer) and I thought I heard Parson call out her mother in the crowd. I supposed this was a stark contrast to their first appearance in Minnesota, about six years ago according to Braden, when they were just a duo, and had to stop playing after three songs because no one was listening. With that story, they ended their set with "That's What I'll Say", concluding that perhaps "it's better in L.A."

Colleen Green was in a small dress, and we're not entirely sure if she knew it or not, but she was unintentionally flashing us her bum. The last time that Green was in town, she was touring with a drum machine. She's upgraded now with a live drummer Casey Weissbuch (from the awful/best/terrible band named Diarrhea Planet).

Her set featured plenty of songs from her new record I Want to Grow Up, including the title track, "Pay Attention", and "Whatever I Want". The slacker, surfer rocker sang about having a "real" boyfriend, listen to the radio, bad dogs, and watching television all day by herself.

Near the end of their set, Green and Weissbuch was disagreeing on what to play next. Weissbuch had to constantly tell Green the song order (since he was keeping the drumming rhythm).

After their final song "TV" was played, they started to pack up ... but Weissbuch wanted to keep playing, so they jammed on a song with lyrics "Wasting time."
