There’s really no doubt left– Fitz and the Tantrums are no longer a secret locally; rather, are firmly established as a party-starting, crowd-inducing good time band that everyone now has their eye on.

Tuesday, 11/22/16, 7pm ($13) first-avenue.com
We’re big fans of The Jezabels and was happy to see that they are back in the United States at the 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis... touring in support of their third studio album Synthia.
The Australian band was last seen in town in June 2014 and we wrote, “Most of the attention was focused on Hayley Mary, who sounded a little like Karen O and Kate Bush, but she had very few words to say on stage. Still, whatever lack of words she had, she certainly made it up with her funky dance moves.”
Chicago/Melbourne band Surf Rock Is Dead will open.

Australian four-piece The Jezabels are in the middle of their rescheduled North American Tour. The ARIA award winning band is currently on a massive tour in support of their sophomore album The Brink, which came out earlier this year via Play It Again Sam (PIAS).
Gold & Youth
Opening up the show was Montreal's Gold & Youth. The synthy indie band is currently signed to Arts & Crafts and playing tracks from their album Beyond Wilderness.
Their set was fairly brief (under 30 minutes) and ending with two of their best songs, "Jewel" (with Louise Burns taking lead vocals) and "Time to Kill."
Setlist
The Jezabels came on stage about 9pm to showcase the majority of songs from their latest album The Brink. The new album was a shift in a different direction, based on that difficult sophomore slump, but also the band was faced with a new producer and a new record label.
You can tell that the new record still contain the great personal lyrics, but more upbeat, particularly with The Brink's best song, "The End." That song was fantastic live, although the audience's clear favorite was "Hurt Me" (from their debut album Prisoner), based on the loud claps and cheers.
Hayley Mary
Most of the attention was focused on Hayley Mary, who sounded a little like Karen O and Kate Bush, but she had very few words to say on stage. Still, whatever lack of words she had, she certainly made it up with her funky dance moves.
The Jezabels continues their Rescheduled North American Tour:

The album came out October 1st via Community Music and featured ten original compositions and one new song all written, composed, and produced by Ebert.

Other nominees in the "Best Score" category are listed below, although I thought the winner may be the Mandela soundtrack due to his recent passing?

Brink
The Jezabels
Speaking of which, Australia's The Jezabels will be back with a new album on February 18, 2014, called The Brink (PIAS).
Singer Hayley Mary of The Jezabels commented on the "pop music" on their album, "To me, pop is the darkest music of all. If you look not at what pop artists are consciously doing but at what they’re reflecting about the world, pop is the most twisted, weird and scary stuff. If you wanted to study the Earth from an alien perspective, listen to pop music."

Ian McGlynn has a new album called Now We're Golden, which just came out earlier this month, June 5th via Bailey Park Records. The album was recorded all over the place, including Paris.…
Now We're Golden is the third album from Ian McGlynn. It is said that the entire album was written on a tiny Casiotone MT-220 keyboard (which he kept with him at all times in case inspiration struck or his schedule suddenly aligned with his songwriting partner Chris Newkirk.)
We've briefly mentioned the album earlier in July, but wanted to mention that at the time of release, it was featured on iTunes New and Noteworthy section and spent two months in the CMJ top 30.
North Pole Vault
Also, worth noting, is that Ian McGlynn has a brand new Christmas-inspired EP called North Pole Vault, which came out December 3rd on iTunes. The EP is a six-song collection of holiday songs, "written in a bourbon haze".

The Dividends is singer Sarah Jaffe and producer Symbolyc One (or short, S1), with a forthcoming EP called Far From Away scheduled for release in 2014.
They've released a track from the EP called "Fool's Gold", featuring Raekwon.
The Body Wins
Sarah Jaffe
We've previously written about Sarah Jaffe's album The Body Wins, which I previously said that "it's actually very good. Reminds me a bit of Florence + The Machine, but electronica, with Jaffe's beautiful voice."
S1 talked about Jaffe: "Sarah Jaffe is amazing, I truly believe we have something really special when we're working together. The first three songs we ever collaborated on were picked by major artists—including Eminem's 'Bad Guy'—so it was only right that we proceed and present our ideas through what we know now as The Dividends."
Dirty Gold is the new album from Angel Haze (aka Raykeea Wilson), it is coming out March 3rd, 2014, on Island Records (UK)/Universal Republic (US).

The Slowdown is a 6-piece indie rock band (Brothers Sam Hoskins on lead vocals/guitars/other instruments and Joe Hoskins on keys,

Austin Turney on guitar, and Drew Little on drums) from Kansas City.

The album's first single and title track, "Digital Gold", which DIY Magazine calls "the poppiest and the most electronic", is available now.
Poor Maitland,.. or more specifically, the kids from Maitland… always being the brunt of our bogan jokes, when in reality, us kids from Newcastle weren’t much less boganic. To cut a long story short, Maitland was the scene of one of the locations of the Groovin The Moo festival, which tours around Australia each year to some more regional locations (rather than your capital cities like Melbourne or Sydney).
My first thoughts, as I walked up to the entrance, were “lordy… that person’s backyard is going to be a river of wee if people keep weeing on that tree” and “why did no one tell me that short denim shorts were ‘in’?” However, those thoughts soon faded because as funny as the female uniform was, there was some music to be concentrating on.
After catching the very end of The Jezabels (who were on unusually early on in the line-up… in my opinion), Darwin Deez was the first act on our list of must-sees. As quirky as his recordings was the performance by Darwin Deez and band. It was pretty much what I was expecting music-wise. Poppy, happy, guitar driven tunes; keeping the kids dancing, although most of the songs seem to be relate to some sort of relationship break-up. Sad and happy all at once: “Everyday ought to be a bad day for you”. The best part, by far… was the choreographed interludes (to Enya, amongst other songs) performed by the entire band.
Those lads from Norway, Datarock, adorned in snazzy red tracksuits, played next on the adjacent stage and pleased the ever-growing crowd significantly. I do admit that although I enjoyed the recent 'Catcher In The Rye' release from Datarock, I’ll never be able to go past 'Computer Camp Love', which, to my surprise (and dismay) was released as far back as 2005…. feels like yesterday. And yes, to my glee, they played it.
Washington has successfully made it into the Australian mass conscience - proven by the shortening of their name to 'Washo' by various fans and radio DJs. Megan and the band played an upbeat and rather tight set, sticking mostly to the well known songs from 'I Believe You Liar', the main exception being their version of The Divinyl's 'I Touch Myself' where Megan appeared to be channelling Christina Amphlett. Megan Washington's band made no attempt to divert attention away from her, which would have been a challenge anyway, considering her diva-like presence on show. They did divide the popsters from the rock fans amongst the festival crowd, but there were many up front who may have been there only to see Washington. And some very enthused sing-a-longs.
The Go! Team were as brilliant live as I always remembered them. I don’t know what you think, but their energy on stage coupled with their performance of the songs that are just made for singing/yelling along, makes them more enjoyable live than sitting at home (or on a train or in the supermarket) listening to their recordings. Ninja makes the stage her own and has an amazing ability to get the crowd involved (I also think she might have laughed at how tiny my camera was compared to the other photographers - but also.... she probably didn't even notice it).
House of Pain really aren’t my cuppatea, but really seems to be just what the Maitland folk were waiting for. You can probably guess which of their songs is the only song I know and yes, the minute they started playing 'Jump Around' there was an insane mass flux of people moving towards the stage. I was like an alcoholic salmon swimming upstream towards the bar.
Architecture in Helsinki were the last of my highlights from the day. I’d never managed to catch these guys live before. It was always on the list, and now my mission is complete. A band that is loved by squillions and so well-travelled, but have never crossed my path (not that that’s any kind of amazing feat). Looking like they had just stepped straight out of the 80’s, Architecture in Helsinki played all their most well known tunes and more. The crowd watching was large and dense, making it slightly hard to see, but that really didn’t matter.
Groovin the Moo: an excellent day out and a great opportunity for kids of all ages who might not live near a capital city to get out and experience live music in a festival setting. Fingers crossed that future Groovin the Moo’s can attract such a high calibre of acts and keep the crowds coming.
