Scottish rock band The Fratellis stopped by First Avenue’s mainroom on Thursday, May 10th, to promote their new album In Your Own Sweet Time (Cooking Vinyl).

Opening up the show was Brighton’s rock duo Blood Red Shoes (guitarist Laura-Mary Carter and drummer Steven Ansell). Although I’m not a big fan of the band’s name, it has meaning to the Carter & Ansell. Apparently, it came from an story about how Ginger Rogers danced so much for a musical, that her white shoes turned red with blood.

After “Black Distractions”, the two mentioned fondly the time they headlined the 7th Street Entry (in May 2014). Local group BNLX (Ed & Ashley), who opened up for Blood Red Shoes in 2014, were happy to attend the Thursday night’s show to show support.

The band had a great boy-girl/back-and-forth sound that I absolutely love (particularly on their song “Light it Up” with its anthemic “Light. It. Up.” chorus). Sometime the band can get really heavy rock, it’s hard to believe that these songs were written by the same band.

Their catchy songs actually converted some newfound fans, and certainly would mean that the band will be back in town in the near future.

As for Glasgow’s The Fratellis (guitarist/singer John Lawler, bassist Barry Wallace, and drummer Gordon McRory) came on stage to Jacques Offenbach’s “Orpheus in the Underworld Overture”. Although not everybody knew the song, they certain recognize it as a popular French can-can instrumental.

The group haven’t been here in three years (since Sep 2015), so there were a lot of eager old, as well as new fans, finally seeing the rock-friendly group again.

As expected, The Fratellis played a lot of songs from their fifth album In Your Own Sweet Time. The record came about after an exhausting tour for their 10th anniversary of their debut album Costello Music, and they were eager to get back in the recording studios with producer Tony Hoffer (who happened to also produce their debut record) in 2017. Probably needing a much-need rest, the band decided to push the new record to March 2018, and aptly named it In Your Own Sweet Time... because they were going to release it when they were ready.

Of course, the fans all came to sing to their favorite hit singles “Whistle for the Choir” and “Chelsea Dagger” (which they always save for last).

You may recall that we went to Chicago to see the trio in November 2013: “After a five year absent from the music scene, The Fratellis are back with a brand new album We Need Medicine. The Scottish band is currently in the middle of a tiny, tiny U.S. tour in support of it, and basically selling out every venue they booked!”

Now, in 2018, the group is back in the U.S. to promote their new album In Your Own Sweet Time (Cooking Vinyl), and, of course, have been selling out a ton of dates.

The Great Good Fine OK and Smallpools co-headlining 2018 tour will be stopping by the Varsity Theater in Dinkytown this Thursday.

We’ve seen both bands a couple of times, and was pretty excited to see Smallpools on their first national tour in July 2013: “From my understanding, this was Smallpools' very first national tour, so they were quite excited to play Minneapolis for the first time. They seem like a really new band, playing songs from their Have a Great Summer EP (including "Over and Over" and the set closer "Dreaming").”

London-born, Los Angeles-based Bishop Briggs is headlining the Go Show at First Avenue on Friday. Jordan Alamat, the DJ from radio station Go 96.3 will be hosting the event.

This isn’t Briggs’ first Go Show, in fact, she headlined the radio station’s show last year, in April 2017, which we wrote, “Born with the name of Sarah McLaughlin, it’s not surprising that London transplanted LA singer-songwriter goes by the stage name Bishop Briggs and the crush of the crowd could hardly wait for her hour-long headlining set, in support of her self-titled debut EP (on Island Records). The pony-tailed artist, in black skirt and oversized Members Only-style zippered jacket hardly stood still for the entire hour, bouncing about from side to side, constantly engaging the crowd to jump along with her.”

Show up early to check out Matt Maeson, who recently released his EP The Hearse on Neon Gold / Atlantic Records. Fans of Jeff Buckley’s hypnotic voice should take note.

Glasgow's The Fratellis is currently touring in support of Eyes Wide, Tongue Tied (Cooking Vinyl), stopping their sold out show at the Varsity Theater in Minneapolis on Friday night, September 25th.

Grizfolk

Opening up the show was Grizfolk (not to be confused with the Griswolds) on their very first national tour (their first time in Minneapolis).

The Los Angeles based band (although they think of themselves as from "Sweden, America") played a few tracks from their debut EP From the Spark, including "Waiting For You" and their set finale, "Hymnals". Filling out the rest of their set was their new single "Troublemaker" and a cover of David Bowie's "Suffragette City".

The Fratellis

The last time The Fratellis was in Minneapolis, it was on 11 September 2008, with The Airborne Toxic Event and Electric Touch. When they announced a small 2013 tour (leaving Minneapolis out), we were convinced that they would never come back to the city so we flew into Chicago to catch them at a sold out show at the Metro.

Given a few years, they are back with Eyes Wide, Tongue Tied and with that album, they expanded their tour to Minneapolis, finally! It's good to have the band back in our city, the last time they were at the Varsity Theater it was in support of their debut album Costello Music in 2007 (we wrote about the band around the same time).

As usual, the band is tight. They had a dedicated guitar tuner, so he would often rush on stage to swap out guitars for Jon, saving us from awkward guitar tuning banters. Of course, that also meant lack of talking between songs (expect perhaps when he asked the roadie to play the guitar for him).

Since I believe this is only The Fratellis' third time in Minneapolis, so it felt a little special. There were many young kids (under 18) at the show with their parents, almost all of them wore Fratellis T-Shirts.

Setlist

As you can see from their setlist, the encore songs were completely wrong. They had listed four songs, the first two, "Slow" and "This Old Ghost Town" was dropped in favor of "Desperate Guy". Of course, they kept the crowd pleaser "Chelsea Dagger", which I personally felt should have been the final song as it would have left the crowd on a very high note (especially when the confetti blew in).

I hope with all the strong support that the Scottish band will come back to the Twin Cities sooner than later.

You may remember that we went down to Chicago to see The Fratellis at their sold out show at the Metro in 2013.

At the time, they were absent from the music scene... so it is good to see that the Scottish band is back - this time with a fourth album, Eyes Wide, Tongue Tied (which came out August 21, 2015, on Cooking Vinyl).

Critically acclaimed Los Angeles-based Grizfolk to open. The alternative rock released their single "Troublemaker" earlier this Summer, taken from their forthcoming full-length debut for Virgin Records.

We previously caught local On An On album release party for And The Wave Has Two Sides last July 2015. I wrote that despite starting their set at midnight, the Icehouse had a strong turnout in support of the band. I also mentioned that after their 2015, that the last date was their homecoming show - which is coming up this Friday, September 25th. It'll be good to have them back in the city.

Supporting them on this tour is London-born artist Eliot Sumner (also known as Coco Sumner or I Blame Coco), singing and playing tracks from her debut album Information (set for release in January 2016!). Her talents as a songwriter and instrumentalist have gained praise for her four new songs - "Dead Arms & Dead Legs", "After Dark", "Firewood" and "Species" (all from the forthcoming album).

Also on the bill is local Aaron & The Sea, now known simply as AATS.

We Were Promised Jetpacks will be returning with E Rey - Live in Philadelphia, an album that was recorded at Philadelphia's Union Transfer. The live album will be out February 25th via FatCat and follows up We Were Promised Jetpacks critically acclaimed sophomore album In The Pit Of The Stomach.

I previously saw We Were Promised Jetpacks at SXSW 2009 at the Scottish Showcase, and they were so very happy to have such a crowded audience (especially showing up early for the opening band), and mentioned on stage that no one gave a "sh***" about them in their hometown.

'Everything is New' is the international outreach project created by Scottish arts community Transgressive North in aid of Dalit "untouchable" children in southeast India, now has over 1,000 contributors, all working for free. Proceeds from the project go to the charity Scottish Love in Action which feeds, clothes, houses, educates and provides medical care for over 500 children by funding the Light of Love Home and School in southeast India.

Coming out next week, January 20th, are two releases:

[1] Marram's Sun Choir, featuring Jarvis Cocker (Pulp), Owen Pallett, doseone, White Hinterland and Margaret Bennett

[2] a compilation called BOATS, featuring exclusive tracks by Four Tet, Dan Deacon, Bear in Heaven, Califone, Deerhoof, El Guincho, Gang Gang Dance, Lucky Dragons, Julian Lynch, Max Tundra, No Age, The Ruby Suns, Rustie, Son Lux, Sun Airway, A Sunny Day in Glasgow, Taken By Trees, Jamie Stewart (Xiu Xiu), YACHT, and many more.

On both releases, you can hear the voices of Light of Love Children's Choir, which is made up of the voices of the children from the Light of Love Home and School.

Taking place in a few days is Celtic Connections music festival. Over 200 musicians from around the world is playing in Glasgow between January 16th and February 2nd, 2014.

Scotland's Fatherson recently sold out their Glasgow show with over 500 people singing every word, indicating that they have strong hometown support. The band new album I Am An Island will be coming out April 7th on A Modern Way.

Vladimir is "the noisiest band in Dundee [Scotland]", according to Daily Record.

The four-piece young band (everyone is 18 years old) is known for their "excessively loud chaotic live shows", opening up for such bands as Peace, The View, Pigeon Detectives, The Twilight Sad and Wet Nuns.

Their last release was "Come Over", which came out November 18th, 2013. You can hear the track on soundcloud.com. The track is free to download.



The band was recently on "Vic's 25 Scottish Artists to Watch 2014". The list is in alphabetical order, so take that as you will with Vladimir ending up last because of the 'v'.

After a five year absent from the music scene, The Fratellis are back with a brand new album We Need Medicine. The Scottish band is currently in the middle of a tiny, tiny U.S. tour in support of it, and basically selling out every venue they booked! Unfortunately, the mini-tour only extended to a few dates, so they left Minneapolis off their schedule (for now). We stop in to see them at the Metro in Chicago, to a very sold-out show last night.

Since we generally don't cover Chicago shows, I just wanted to talk a little about the Metro. I've only been there one other time to see The Kooks. This seem to be an old fashion theater that's been converted to a concert venue. The front left side serves as a merchandise store, the middle section served as a ticket box office. I didn't see the right side, but that seems like a pool/hang out area. Once inside, there's an upper balcony area, that I believe was half blocked off for VIP seats with a view. The rest of us, with general admission tickets, were packed in on the dance floor. It was so full last night that people were extended well into the bars in the back. I didn't know the capacity, but it was really crowded, especially for a Wednesday night. I guessed it was sold out (in fact, it was sold out). With so many bodies so close to each other, it got incredibly hot. When the venue decided to turn on the two ceiling fans, everyone, literally everyone around me, immediately looked up and said "Thank you!"

THE CEREMONIES

The Ceremonies opened up the show. The Los Angeles band is made up of mostly three brothers: Matthew, Mark, and Michael Cook. The Cook brothers all seem extremely excited to be on the same bill with The Fratellis, mentioning several time how great it's been so far. Most of their songs played live were taken from their debut self-titled EP, including their finale "Land of Gathering".

The Fratellis finally came on stage around 10:20 and kicked off their set with "This Old Ghost Town", from their latest album We Need Medicine. Almost any songs from Costello Music ("Flathead", "Baby Fratelli", etc) had the best audience reaction, obviously the album is well loved by fans, but, of course, the majority of their set consists of newer songs from We Need Medicine, including "Whisky Saga", the title track "We Need Medicine", and their latest single "Halloween Blues". Since the album was only recently released (October 8th), the audience was still feeling out the new songs.

Watching singer/guitarist Jon and bassist guitarist Barry bouncing energy off each other was really fun. You can tell the band is excited to come back in the future, it's almost as if they underestimated how many American fans they have.

The Fratellis are currently in the middle of a very successful U.S. tour; their album We Need Medicine is out now via BMG.

The Fratellis are back! It's been a while since their debut 2006 Costello Music (which we wrote about nearly six years ago). After their second album Here We Stand, in 2008, the band went into "indefinite hiatus" to work on various side projects.

The band got back together last year to record We Need Medicine, which was released earlier in October via BMG.

The band will be landing in the U.S. in November to do a small tour in support of the album. Of course, they are not stopping in Minneapolis, so your next option will be an eight hour drive to Chicago on November 6th to see this Scottish band!

People still fondly remember the band, as evident by all these sold out shows!

Local alternative public radio station 89.3 The Current held its 2nd Public Music Meeting at the Amsterdam Bar and Hall in St. Paul last night.

This open session gave their listening public a chance to show their opinions and exercise their voice on 15 different new songs being considered by Program Director Jim McGuinn and staff, to be added into regular play rotation. Most of the Current on-air and music programming team was in attendance (save Mark Wheat who was on-air) as well as reviewers from City Pages and Star Tribune to help facilitate and add to the discussions.

Participants were given numbers from 1-10 (plus a ‘rock hands’ symbol to hold up if you really liked what you heard) to rate the songs which were played ‘blind’. After numbers were held in the air with scores tallied and a sample of voiced crowd and writer reactions heard, the artist/title of each song was then revealed. For most attendees, this was their first opportunity to hear new tracks by the likes of Fratellis, Mazzy Star, Janelle Monae w/ Prince, Rudimental, and Bastille.

While no songs reached collectively into the ‘high positive’ (not even the new Arcade Fire), several received enough of an overall good reaction for consideration.

The session was rounded out by the premiere of a new Jeremy Messersmith song, not due to release until 2014, and a sharp departure from his previous work— the quiet, acoustic coffee-shop style sound being replaced by a larger, more dynamic (and yes, radio-friendly) bigger sound. 2014 already is sounding interesting.

Splendour in the Grass - Wrapped Up in a Neat Little Package

You asked for a comprehensive review (well... maybe you didnt, but you're getting one, alright?!?!) and here it is. What else was brilliant about Splendour this year?... except the music and the bands, that is.

Bracken Ridge Tavern

Unexpected delays result in heading off from Brisbane to Woodford just as most of the bottle-o’s (ie. takeaway alchohol selling establishments) were closing up. We embark on a desperate improvised tour of the suburbs in search of vodka to fill our ribena squeezies, taking in a random servo, the Brisbane Entertainment Centre and Sandgate, getting directions from an assortment of locals that eventually leads us to Bracken Ridge Tavern. If you’re ever in the area, stop in, have a beer, and thank them for us.

Byron Bay Organic Donuts

Filled with either blackberry jam or dark chocolate (we’ve never bothered with plain, we assume they’re a waste of time), these sugar-coated deep-fried pockets of awesomeness make an outstanding breakfast, afternoon tea, dessert, or anytime snack.

Interstitial Soundtrack

Throughout the weekend the music played between bands on the main stage continued to surprise and delight. The Fratellis’ Flathead, Machine Gun Fellatio’s Rollercoaster and Nick Cave’s Red Right Hand were personal favourites.

Loose Carnage

Those of you paying attention will remember that Loose Carnage opened for us at Laneway when we djed. We are thrilled to report that they are still going strong and dj-ed at the Jager Lodge on Sunday morning. Nothing like a nice refreshing jager and ginger beer (jager bomb) before noon. Although seeing the booze gradually dissolving the adhesive in the paper cup was a bit disconcerting.

Amphitheatre

It is HUGE. And very steep. The views and sound in the amphitheatre are great, and it’s an amazing place to be when it’s packed full of people.

Food and Market Stalls

The sheer number of stalls selling anything and everything was impressive. Coconut watches were a highlight, and also whoever it was that gave us free stubby holders on the first morning. Very handy, thank you, mysterious stallholder! We are sure they were promoting something but we have no idea what. Marketing fail. Food options were many and varied, and generally of decent quality. Highlights were some very tasty Indian curry, awesome cajun nachos, burritos, the compulsory dagwood dog and several cups of freshly squeezed oj. Also there were lots of places to get good coffee without a huge line which made mornings that much easier to cope with. Huzzah.

Bars

There was no shortage of places to hang out and get a drink during breaks in the timetable. Hard to choose between yummy cocktails on the upper level overlooking the pond, the Strongbow nautical-themed bar complete with actual real life boat (which apparently was booked for an actual real life private function when we went to have a look. At a festival. For reals. Dumbfounded), Mexican Cantina serving margaritas on tap, Jager Hunting Lodge with leather lounge setting and rocking chairs or the Pontoon bar where you can while away an hour or so on the front verandah among the fishing nets and plastic crustaceans.

I'm sure no one's worried about becoming too popular, then the lawsuits comes out and pretty soon they'll be making commercials for Hersey's Kisses. We'll see. Speaking of seeing, from the look of things, this is a duo between Jesse and Zinzi. Their first single is called "Bermuda", and based on just this song, I can tell you that they're not "disco" as their MP3 display. They're more like sensitive indiepop, with an obession of England's non-threatening music and books. Anyway, if you like indie music, it's definitely worth checking out. Their name, Primal Static, might be deceiving, since there's really nothing that primal or statically about them. This is, of course, based on their one song, which is available as a free download, I can tell you that it's loud and guitary. Thuman certainly sounds and plays like a real pro, while Yang probably handles all the background stuff that's unappreciated. Still, as loud and southern rock as that one song sound, I will bet you that they are probably fantastic live. Unfortunately, at this time, there's no live dates. Codeine Velvet Club - I Am The Resurrection Codeine Velvet Club CODEINE VELVET CLUB codeinevelvetclub.com ♥ myspace.com Codeine Velvet Club are from Scotland, between Lou Hickey and Jon Lawler. While the name "Lawler" might mean nothing to you, he's actually Jon Fratelli, you know, of the Fratellis? Anyway, I was sent this Stone Roses cover song by Codeine Velvet Club. At first, as a Stone Roses fan, I absolutely dismissed it at first, but eventually got around to listening to it. It's basically a pop song, with a different take to the song at the end (a clash of brass instruments) and that they made it into a duet. Not fond of this song as a duet, I'll have to admit. They did get one thing right: that amazing bassline in "I Am The Resurrection" and the lyrics (they really clear up a few mumblings from Ian Brown, who is notorious for singing songs that people will mishear.) Unfortunately, they also capture the imperfection of the original song, particularly the middle part that just seems to drag on without lyrics. So again, I'll stress, this is the Swedish duo of Karolina Komstedt and Johan Angergård. The band's seventh album, called The People's Record, will be out somewhen in May. If you're signed up on the Labrador's mailing list, you should've gotten a link to download the new single called "Western Hospitality", highly influenced by "afrofunk" and "krautrock", out on April 7th. According to articles and interviews, apparently the band was influenced by Brazilian music, hence a more "world"-type music found on their new upcoming record. While the hand drums and rhythms, definitely brings to mind africana, Karolina's sugary sweet vocals doesn't really go with the beats. It's different, if you were expecting the same Club 8, and this may be a good or bad thing for you. We do have a review copy, so I'll be putting it on my review pile, come next month.
