Canadian rock band Arkells is back in the US, touring in support of t heir new album Morning Report (Universal Music Canada / Last Gang Records). The band also recently announced a 2017 North American tour with Frank Turner and The Sleeping Souls.

Note that the St Paul show was not originally listed on their tour itinerary (as not shown on their tour poster).

Darcys to open. We caught the band a few time, the last being in March 2014 and we wrote, “The evening began with a set from Toronto’s The Darcys, just Juno Award-nominated for their third indie art-rock album, Warring (Arts &Crafts). The Toronto quartet,led by singer/keyboardist Jason Couse (who is unafraid to sing falsetto), had also covered Steely Dan’s Aja in its entirety on its last release, and offered up the Dan’s ‘Josie’, mid-set.”

Norwegian-born electronic duo Lemâitre (Ulrik Denizou Lund and Ketil Jansen) is back on tour in support of their new EP Afterglow (Astralwerks). The EP is available for download on iTunes and ready for streaming on Spotify (already streamed over 23 million times).

The phrase “Canadian Arts and Crafts Showcase” sounds a little like a college elective course.

In truth, Arts & Crafts is an established Canadian record label that has successfully nurtured the likes of Stars, Broken Social Scene and Feist among others, and has expanded to include other Canadian and now American artists, and is celebrating with a showcasing tour that arrived in Minneapolis over the weekend.

The evening began with a set from Toronto’s The Darcys, just Juno Award-nominated for their third indie art-rock album, Warring (Arts &Crafts). The Toronto quartet,led by singer/keyboardist Jason Couse (who is unafraid to sing falsetto), had also covered Steely Dan’s Aja in its entirety on its last release, and offered up the Dan’s ‘Josie’, mid-set.

Couse and band Wes Marksell [drums], Michael le Riche [guitar, synth, vocals] and Dave Hurlow [bass] kept tempo high with cuts like ‘Pretty Girls’ while more experimental songs like ‘Itchy Blood’ took more unconventional turns and demanded your attention.

NO

Echo Park/Los Angeles band NO was next, playing a spanning 40 min. set in near-darkness, that had singer Bradley Carter often moving along the stage edge and inciting the crowd. The six-piece plays a moody, widescreen blend of driving indie rock, built one brick at a time.

Comparisons to the National and Interpol are inevitable due to Carter’s similar baritone delivery, but the New Zealand native and his bandmates (bassist Sean Stentz, guitarists Reese Richardson, Ryan Lallier and Simon Oscroft, and drummer Michael Walker) stand on their own, in terms of the songs on their debut, El Prado (Arts & Crafts).

‘Last Chance’ was anthemic in chorus, ‘Leave the Door Wide Open’, the album’s first single, is immediately memorable, and ‘Stay With Me’, which was also on the band’s initial EP, was a dark, crashing centerpiece. Expect them to graduate to bigger venues next time around, to better fit their already large sound palette.

Reuben and the Dark

Calgary’s Reuben and the Dark closed the show with a set that previewed many songs from its upcoming Funeral Sky (Arts & Crafts), due out May 27th. The band, led by guitarist Ruben Bullock and his drummer Distance, has an organic and homegrown feel to its harmonic and guitar-driven indie-folk. The stage was illuminated by dim yellow lights hanging from each mic stand, bringing an added intimacy to their performance.

First single from the album (co-produced by Chris Hayden, Florence+The Machine’s drummer) , ‘Rolling Stone’ fit right in alongside other songs like ‘Bow and Arrow’ and ‘Winter’s Widow’; treading a fine line between darkness and joy, and “hot and cold” as the lyric goes. ‘Shoulderblade’ was a gentle and highly personal song, and the haunting ‘A Memory’s Lament’ benefitted most from the band’s four-part harmonies.

All in all, an entertaining evening of diverse sounds from one of our favorite indie labels with a golden ear for the next up-and-comers. Each of the three bands, though different and unique, is worth keeping an eye on, as to where they go next.

Echo Park in Los Angeles currently seems to be a current hotbed for new alternative bands. Add NO to that list, as the band is a part of Arts & Crafts’ North American label tour, which also features The Darcys and Reuben And The Dark.

El Prado Arts & Crafts

The “post-hymnal anthematic” band, which is often likened to The National due to New Zealand-born singer, Bradley Carter’s baritone voice, uses various musical textures to build their songs. After a successful EP, the six-piece has just released their full-length debut, El Prado (Arts & Crafts) on a label showcase from the Toronto imprint that has previously nurtured Feist, Broken Social Scene, and Stars.

Toronto’s The Darcys and Calgary’s Reuben and the Dark, round out the full bill.

Bombay Bicycle Club stopped by 7th Street Entry in Minneapolis last night. They are currently selling out most of their tour dates, including 7th Street, but walking around the venue, it didn't feel like it was sold out. Perhaps it was the cold snow that put people off? I have to admit, it was just perfect because it wasn't so packed that you couldn't move around.

Lucy Rose

Lucy Rose (who also doubles as a Bombay Bicycle Club band member) and The Darcys (we previously mentioned) opened up the show.

Both Rose and Darcys had very brief sets, possibly no more than 30 minutes each. Rose was as small as she was as quiet. The audience listened to her every note, and she thanked us because she said had played enough shows where people were just talking straight through her set. She also noted how cold it was, but that was fine, she prefer to put on her "jumpers".

Toronto's The Darcys took their name from two Darcys: Mr. Darcy from "Pride and Prejudice" and D'Arcy McGee, the first Canadian political figure to be assassinated. Although they look to be a young bunch, they seem pretty confident and comfortable being on stage.

With the recent release of covers of Steely Dan's Aja album, which available as a free download from thedarcys.ca, it wasn't a surprise to see "Peg" on their set.

As for Bombay Bicycle Club, they are stronger and more popular than ever. It's hard to believe that I wrote about them five years ago, when they were just starting to get their names out.

They pretty much stuck to the set list (see photo). Some of the highlight of the show was when Rose stepped up to sing "Leave It" on center stage. Also, should have ended their show with sing-along classic "Always Like This" with people chanting "I'm not whole" (which may sound more like "I'm not home"!).

Encores were "Shuffle" and "What If".

There are only a dates that they haven't sold out (thanks to venue upgrades), so grab your tickets if you can. Bombay Bicycle Club's latest album is called A Different Kind of Fix, which was available as a download last August, but saw a physical CD release last month, January 17th, via A&M/Octone Records.

The internet killed the video star

I don't really post a lot of youtube videos here because personally I think youtube's interface is ugly. Too ugly to live! Yes, I have a personal goofy youtube account, but I left the service when the copyright police came in and took down some videos because I used their songs in the background.

Still, youtube is the place to be, especially when it comes to viewing videos on the internet. I just wish they'd update their interface, something smooth, like vimeo.

This was brought to my attention recently, but the newspaper Wall Street Journal has a YouTube channel featuring a show called "Off Duty" which focuses on lifestyle, entertainment, fashion, and music - which is really odd because when you think of WSJ, you think "business", "stocks", and "boring".

I am told that the show just started last week, so it should be interesting to see where it goes. Looking over their 40+ videos so far, I can say that some of these things don't really belong (in my opinion). Like, perhaps there should be subcategories for music, cars, cooking, etc., because I can tell you right now that personally, I wouldn't be interested in subscribing to a channel and getting car tech.

Anyway, the music-related episode that I saw is an interview with Australia's Gotye, who had a big hit with his "naked" music video for "Somebody That I Used To Know". The video, featuring Kimbra, clocked in at an astonishing 66 million views!! Holy cow!

Their press people sent out his American tour dates with "Sold Out" listed on all the dates. Not sure what is the point in posting these dates, but just in case there are some "door tickets" left, see below:

Toronto art-rock, The Darcys, just released Aja, their second release in a triology. What's cool for cover lovers is that it's basically the entire Steely Dan's 1977 Aja album, reinterpretated. You can grab The Darcys' version for free on their website. If you really love it, look for a limited edition 180-gram colored vinyl from GalleryAC.com.

Their latest music video is for "Josie", a black and white video featuring a cast of lovely women: Ali, Anne, Annie, Charlotte, Claire, Chelsea, Coral, Elyse, Gill, Laura, Leah, Lisa, Liza, Madison, Molly, Raina, Rebecca, and Sophie. You know what's missing from that list? A Josie.
