We are sad to learn that Buzzcocks’ co-founder Pete Shelley has died of a heart attack at the age of 63.

We caught the band’s last Minneapolis appearance at the Varsity Theater in September 2014 and wrote, “I may have said that Pete Shelley was the only original member of Buzzcocks. Although that is technically true, I believe Steve Diggle (who joined later) is really as much a part of the Buzzcocks as anyone since 1976. And let me tell you - watching Diggle on stage is a delight.”

I love so many Buzzcocks songs, and the band played many of my favorites on their live show (including “I Don't Mind”, “Fast Cars”, “Autonomy”, “What Do I Get?”, and, of course, their two best-known songs “Ever Fallen in Love (With Someone You Shouldn't've)” and “Orgasm Addict”.

Of my 113 live shows I personally attended in 2014, these are my top ten.

1. Slowdive at Fine Line (31 Oct 2014)
An absolutely unforgettable show. After a 22 year absent, the band is back, healthier, happier, and dressed for the occasion (Halloween). Played all the hits, completely professional and absolutely a treat (like the candies they handed out) to finally see live.

2. Kaiser Chiefs at First Ave (13 June 2014)
WOW, these guys are amazing live. They did some things on this show that I've never, ever seen done at First Avenue (climbing owner's box rafters).

3. Paul Weller at Varsity Theater (10 Sep 2014)
Speaking of 20+ years absent from Minneapolis, the Modfather Paul Weller returned to the city. Fans of British music could not absolutely miss this sold out show.

4. Stars at First Avenue (19 Nov 2014)
Maybe it was because they were filming this live show for Yahoo, but this was a great show. I've criticized the band before when they only played new songs... but not this 2014 show. They played a lot of old stuff, including some hits and they did it because of the fans.

5. Lily Allen at Skyway (01 Oct 2014)
I love it when a band put on a show, and that's exactly what I got when I saw Allen. Sure, the setlist is the same every night, but the routines (including three costume changes) were absolutely fun to watch.

6. Peter Hook at Fine Line (15 Nov 2014)
I'll probably never see New Order live, so seeing Peter Hook play some classic New Order songs were good enough for me. Plus, bad snowstorm and sold out environment and three-hour music set, made it for a memorable show.

7. Buzzcocks at Varsity Theater (11 Sep 2014)
Legendary punk band... absolute blast to see them still at it.

8. Tori Amos at O'Shaughnessy (03 Aug 2014)
My first time seeing Tori, and it was everything I expected! Her set is different every night, thanks to fan requests... so you never know what she is going to play!

9. Pixies at State Theatre (11 Oct 2014)
This is one of those bands on my bucket list... I can finally cross them off the list. Really tight show, the band played all the hits and showcased their new songs.

10. Festival Palomino (20 Sep 2014)
Although the Americana music thing isn't my cup of tea, I have to give big thumbs up for this incredibly well-organized first-ever music festival of its kind. The event sold so well that they've already announced a second Festival Palomino... so obviously I'm looking forward to 2015.

Nashville based recording artist Alice Peacock will be in Minneapolis at the Dakota Jazz Club on November 2nd. We caught her show in 2010 and noted that it felt like a comfortable house show, full of friends of family... possibly due to her strong ties with Minnesota, because she grew up in White Bear Lake in Minnesota.

From my understanding, Peacock has written and ready to record a new album, set for Summer 2015. Look for a record release party at the Space in Evanston.

I've said it before, but I had a blast at Quintron and Miss Pussycat in 2010 at the Triple Rock Social Club. We tried to cover their show last year, but unfortunately it didn't happen (we saw another animal band, Noah and the Whale at the Varsity Theater on October 8, 2013 instead).

So, anyway, after three years of random singles and a Grammy nomination for songwriting ("Chatterbox" 2012), Quintron's debut LP Spellcaster II: Death In Space is out today (October 28th).

Anyway, expect a live puppet show with Miss Pussycat at the upcoming Turf Club show. Opening up for the show in St Paul is New Orleans' Babes (not to be confused with Los Angeles' Babes) and local band Honeystick.

It's a mini-British invasion at the Varsity Theater in Minneapolis, with Paul Weller on Wednesday, and now Buzzcocks last night.

The Magnolias

Opening up for the band were The Magnolias, a local Minneapolis band who have been around since the mid-80s. The band played tracks from their previous six albums, including their latest Pop The Lock from 2011 ("Neighborhood Patrol", "Top Of The Charts", "Kissing The Ground You're On", and "Torture Yours").

The band proudly wore their influences on their sleeves - sounding much like The Undertones and Buzzcocks, and not shy about it at all. The audience seemed to enjoy the great little two-minute powerpop songs. This was a good billing.

Highlight of their set was their introduction to "Radio Is Dead," which singer John Freeman said, "I know this show is sponsored by a radio station [89.3 The Current]. This song has nothing to do with that station."

Buzzcocks

I may have said that Pete Shelley was the only original member of Buzzcocks. Although that is technically true, I believe Steve Diggle (who joined later) is really as much a part of the Buzzcocks as anyone since 1976. And let me tell you - watching Diggle on stage is a delight. I could not take my eyes off of his well-practiced moves; the way he kicks bottled water, the way he holds his guitar, the way he shuffles to and fro... Diggle was having the time of his life on stage and it is just wonderful to watch.

Setlist

Since all of the Buzzcocks songs are two or three minutes, or less, they were able to fit 25 songs on their setlist. In fact, the setlist was so large that they couldn't all fit on one page. You have got to love the extra songs, more bang for your buck, as they say.

With the new album The Way just released earlier in May 2014, the band, of course, was obligated to play some of those songs live, including the title track, "Keep on Believing", "People Are Strange Machines", "The Way", "It's Not You", and "Chasing Rainbows/Modern Times." From what I've heard, the new tracks sounds like their old songs, which is a relief. And being veterans, they know they had to mix in some old songs with the new. They know what they're doing when they put together the setlist.

Songs I love hearing were "I Don't Mind" with "Fast Cars" (both were played fairly early in), "Autonomy", and "What Do I Get?" Of course, the Bolton band saved the best for last: "Harmony In My Head", "Ever Fallen in Love (With Someone You Shouldn't've)", and "Orgasm Addict." As I have previously mentioned "Ever Fallen in Love" is one of my favorite song. Even "Orgasm Addict" is quite funny, that opening line is classic, "Well you tried it just for once and found it alright for kicks, but now you found out that it's a habit that sticks."

Buzzcocks will end their US date at Riot Fest in Chicago (09/13) and Denver (09/19), before heading back to the UK. If you love 70s British punk, rock music, you owe it to yourself to check Buzzcocks on tour. These guys are proving that punk's not dead.

Is the Summer really over? Wow, that was fast! One of the highlight of the Summer was Paul McCartney at Target Center, who played nearly three hours of music. But was the past... Vu and John look forward to "Something Fall-ish", music shows in the Twin Cities in the next two months.

American singer-songwriter Joshua James reached iTunes at #1 with his release of The Sun is Always Brighter in 2007. It would seem that James is on tour this Fall in support of his latest album From the Top of the Willamette Mountain, which came out in the fourth quarter of 2012, via Intelligent Noise Records.

Opening up for James will be Nashville's Neulore, a songwriting duo consisting of Adam Agin and William T. Cook. Mockingbird Son w/ Jake Jones

Mockingbird Son (Charlie Berry, Brett Taylor, and Truck Roley) is from Nashville, although both Charlie and Brett are originally from Dallas. The trio met while collaborating with CMA/ACM Song of the Year winner songwriter Tom Douglas (not to be confused with the chef).

Mockingbird Son's latest release is a digital single called "Hey Mary", which came out last month, August 21, 2014, via Hungry Jockey Records.

Opening up the show will be local indie/folk singer-songwriter Jake Jones. Jones started his musical path playing electric guitar to his friends, but eventually got hooked onto acoustic when he got older.

Glass Animals w/ Rome Fortune

Oxford's Glass Animals will be playing tracks from their debut album Zaba, which came out earlier this Summer via Harvest Records (the same label responsible for Morrissey's latest album, as well as Paul Weller's recent compilation), at the Cedar Cultural Center in Minneapolis on Tuesday, September 9th.

The band first came to our attention when we caught up with Radio 1 DJ Steve Lamacq and he said his #1 choice of British band at SXSW 2014 was Glass Animals. See his choice pick: SXSW 2014: Steve Lamacq Interview.

Musician/producer Rome Fortune from Atlanta will be opening up the show.

Part of the Cover Lover series: this week is Cristina's choices.

This show is pretty epic. We planned on five cover songs and maybe 30 minutes of talk-time. Unfortunately, we derailed. As usual. We spent a lot of time talking about the Runaways. Well maybe it was mostly Cristina talking about the movie, since I haven't seen it. But it was good, the whole thing reminds me of The Fabulous Stains. Incidentally, we kept referring to the punk band as The Professionals, but, in fact, the band was called The Looters (which I have misheard as The Losers when I first saw the movie - which on retrospect, that is a better name).

Grace Jones' version of "She's Lost Control", changing the meaning of the song from the original Joy Division version.

Bimbo Jet's "El Bimbo", which is based on an obscure Afghan song, "Tanha Shudham Tanha" by Ahmad Zahir. According to Wikipedia, it is Paul Mauriat's version that appears on Police Academy.

"Falling in Love" is an old German song, and was covered by many bands, including: Kevin Ayers, The Beatles, Christina Aguilera (dance version), Nina Simone, and Claudine Longet. But the version Cristina loves is the Adicts' version.

Song of the week is Adicts' "Falling in Love".

"Ever Fallen in Love (With Someone You Shouldn't've)" is a classic punk song from The Buzzcocks. The cover version by Fine Young Cannibals is pretty awesome too. Mostly because Roland Gift brings his own element to it with his vocals.

Luna was a 90s dreampop band from New York, who was probably most famous for that revenge-song “Slash Your Tires” off their debut album, Lunapark. After several years and dropping off their major Warner Brothers label, they released The Days of Our Nights under an indie label. Obviously, the album didn’t do that well, but on the album, they closed out with Guns n Roses cover “Sweet Child o’ Mine”. What I generally like about covers is that they try something different, and what’s different here is Dean Wareham’s calm, sad, dreamy vocals over the screamy metal quality of Axl Rose.
