Boston’s Tall Heights headlined the Turf Club in St Paul on Monday, October 22nd.

Starting the show was Brooklyn’s Frances Cone. We first came across the trio (singer/keyboardist Christina Cone, guitarist Jeff Malinowski, and bassist Andrew Doherty) in 2014, when we read that they were a cross between Neko Case and Cat Power.

Singer Christina Cone talked about the last time they were in the area, they had spent their day off being drunk and then ordering $50 worth of hotel food (meatball pizza). Most of their songs from a forthcoming album in January 2019, including “Easy Love”.

Although the Cone said that she would love to hang out, she said they had to basically hit the road as soon as possible as they had an eight-hour drive to the next venue.

They ended their 35-min set with “Leave Without You.”

Old Sea Brigade was up next. The stagename is for Nashville-based, Atlanta-born singer, songwriter Ben Cramer, who is releasing his debut LP Ode To A Friend on January 4, 2019, via Nettwerk Records. The album title was inspired by Cramer’s sudden loss of a best friend to suicide.

With a typical one album, Old Sea Brigade played those upcoming song, including “Seen a Ghost” (the leading single). Sometime Cramer had a Bob Dylan-esque style to his vocals and music.

Cramer also apologized in advance, because they had a long drive ahead of them and couldn’t stay after the show.

Normally Tall Heights is duo cellist/vocals Paul Wright and guitarist/vocals Tim Harrington, but for their live shows, they’re joined on stage by percussionist Paul Dumas, a keyboard player, and a bassist/additional guitarist.

Perhaps it’s because their new album is Pretty Colors For Your Actions (Sony Music Masterworks), they did “paint” the Turf Club with a variety of fog and mixed color lights throughout their set.

Most of Tall Heights’ early work were simple cello and guitar sound, but since 2015, the duo have expanded their music with additional drums, electric guitar, and keyboards.... which perfectly fit in with their live sound.

The most interesting part of their show had to do with using feedback from two cellphones and incorporating it into their song “Cross My Mind”. The sound is somewhat of a chirping nature, and is unique to each live performance of that song.

They ended their set with “Spirit Cold” and a quick encore of “House on Fire”.

Robert Plant, the English musician best known as the lead singer and lyricist for Led Zeppelin, will be headlining the Orpheum Theatre this Thursday. Billed as Robert Plant & The Sensational Space Shifters, they’ll be playing tracks from his 11th solo album Carry Fire.

The upcoming show is long sold out (even at a higher-than-average pricing of $75 a ticket), but to justify the higher price, fans who bought a ticket online, were also given a copy of the new album.

Seth Lakeman, who contributes viola and fiddle to three tracks from Carry Fire, will open the show.

The last time we saw California neo-hippie band The Mowgli’s, they were co-headlining with Canadian Lights in 2015. We noted, “A spirited feel-good 65min. of hummable tunes followed, many culled from their latest, Kids in Love (Photo Finish/Island Records) which was released earlier this spring. ‘Love is Easy’ was dedicated to anyone “who’s had their heart smashed into a bazillion pieces” and co-vocalist Katie Jayne Earl took time out in the set to re-inforce the band’s mission of spreading love and kindness, and mentioned that all the band’s proceeds from ‘Room for All of Us’ were going to charity.”

Be sure to show up early to check out Mainland. The post-punk/pop taco-loving trio (singer Jordan Topf, guitarist Corey Mullee and bassist Alex Pitta) recently appeared on Billboard to talk about their “Hometown” release (Feb 16). This isn’t the first time Mainland opened for Mowgli’s, they were previously billed together in February 2016 (their first time in Minneapolis), and we said, “… plays a quick-paced, hooky hybrid of punk, garage, new wave, and high-energy alternative. The crowd appreciated the adrenalin-boosted tempo change and clapped along with the chorus of ‘Not as Cool as Me’ in appreciation.”

We caught the band in October 2017 and noted that they may be moving to Minneapolis: “The band, at least Eve, also announced that they have fallen in love with the city and decided to move here after this year. We previously caught Ben Rector in July 2016 already noted about this upcoming October show: “Singer - songwriter Ben Rector stopped in town last week for a brief promotional appearance, in front of an overcrowded dockside audience braving a sweltering triple-digit heat index for a generous seven-song, forty-five minute set, that had many already making plans for his full show, in late October.”

Rector’s new album Brand New is out now.

Although the venue did not list the opener - we are told it is heartthrob Jacob Whitesides. He will be opening up for this show. We previously caught him earlier in June 2016 and had never seen so many cellphones up in the air to record Whiteside as he came on stage.... Jacob’s new single ‘Lovesick’ is out now.

Speaking of “Brand New”, Brand New’s last-ever Minnesota show will be taking place at the The Roy Wilkins Auditorium on this October 23rd. The band confirmed that they are breaking up in 2018 or earlier, and this is their very last tour.

The Front Bottoms and Modern Baseball will join in on the fun. We’ve seen both openers, with The Front Bottoms in November 2015, which we described as “The Front Bottoms is nothing more than four guys from New Jersey who are able to write songs about everyday life and make them catchy” and Modern Baseball in June 2016 and wrote they were “full of angst and emotion.”

Boston progressive-folk duo Tall Heights (singer/guitarist Tim Harrington and singer/cellist Paul Wright) will be headlining the Turf Club in St Paul this Sunday, October 23rd. They are promoting their new album Neptune, which came out on August 19, 2016 via Sony Music Masterworks.

Some key things to note about the duo: they recently played Conan O’Brien’s show (on September 26th), their album Spirit Cold surpassed 8 million streams on Spotify (with more than 1 million unique Spotify listeners)... and James Franco and Demi Lovato are among their biggest fans!

We previously mentioned they were played the Aster Café in 2015.

Sydney's Little May is an all-girls band: Annie Hamilton, Liz Drummond and Hannah Field. In only a year, the trio managed to stream over 2 million Soundcloud plays, 3 million Spotify streams, and highly endorsed by Triple J, BBC Radio 1, and Mojo Magazine... the latter declaring "The Australian intricate, dramatic harmonic pop proves appropriately ornate on this soaring yet engagingly earthy first album".

The band's first US tour starts in a few days (October 20th) and will take them to Minneapolis next Tuesday.

No opening band listed, but that will change as we get closer to the date.

New York alternative pop quintet MisterWives will be in town as part of their "Scrapbook Tour".

The band recently earned their first RIAA gold plaque for the hit single “Reflections,” which accumulated over 500,000 digital downloads and streams since its release last year.

As one of 2015’s breakout acts (who we previously wrote about in 2013), they landed at #1 on Billboard’s Emerging Artist Chart and even garnered an “Artist to Watch” nomination at the mtvU Woodie Awards.

The Scrapbook Tour will also feature Waters and Cruisr. The former opened up for Matt & Kim earlier in May 2015.

Please note: This all-ages show will likely start at 6pm, with doors opening at 5pm.

Boston's Tall Heights is Tim Harrington and Paul Wright. The duo is currently touring in support of their new EP Holding On, Holding Out.

The tour will take them to November, where they meet up with Shook Twins.

The two are no strangers to the harsh touring grind, having played over 300 shows between 2013 and 2014, opening up for such established acts as The Wood Brothers, Wild Child, Laura Marling and Ben Sollee.
